- DirectorKathleen BehunStarsMax HambletonWhitney Rose PynnMickey RiverThree filmmakers embark on a paranormal challenge by barricading themselves in a house so haunted, no one has been able to live in for more than 21 days.A very good, and disappointingly overlooked, found footage paranormal investigation movie. It maintains a very creepy atmosphere throughout by being very restrained with its effects. Focusing more on sounds and moving objects than spooky CGI jumpscare faces. Sometimes you'll just see something moving in the back of a shot. The characters don't see it, the movie doesn't draw attention to it, but when you notice it it creates the eerie feeling that the entities are always present, even when the movie isn't focusing on them.
7/10 - DirectorAnthony FankhauserStarsSally ElbertMichael GaglioJames Arthur LewisA group of investigators enter the former property of depraved serial killer John Wayne Gacy, hoping to find evidence of paranormal activity. Upon entering the place they set-up cameras throughout the abandoned house while going room to room with hand-held cameras, performing séances and asking for John Wayne Gacy to come forward. As the evening progresses it seems the investigators are not prepared for the horror still within the house.A very rare case of a movie that I expected to be absolute garbage, but ended up being kinda okay... well okay for a no-budget found footage paranormal investigation movie. Overall way more subtle than anyone would have expected (there is a grand total of zero ghosts in clown costumes) and with some genuinely spooky moments and decent production value.
4/10 - DirectorDustin FergusonStarsBen GothierMichelle Muir-LewisJulia Farrell40 years after the original Amityville murders, a cursed antique toy finds its way to a brand new family-who become the latest victims of possession in the undying legacy of evil. When it comes to straight-to-video horror, "Amityville" and "clown" are two of the biggest red flags that you're in for a bad time. Also, the only clown appears in an unrelated opening segment. Overall, a movie is so lazy and dishonest that it would make Nick Millard proud. (1/10)
- DirectorTurner ClayStarsSonny BurnetteTurner ClayTerri CzapleskiA journalist goes on an adventure to prove that ghosts exist. An overall very good paranormal investigation movie. They do a very good job of keeping things restrained and only showing you just enough to feel like an undeniable, but believable, level of haunting. Also at only an hour long it never drags things out unnecessarily out of a need to hit an arbitrary "Feature length."
7/10 - DirectorTurner ClayStarsTurner ClayTerri CzapleskiA filmmaker investigates the Blackwell Ghost, armed with new info about Mrs. Blackwell. Following clues, he returns to the haunted house to capture paranormal footage.Essentially more of the same, albeit with less need for setup since the previous movie already handled that part. It does however feel a bit less "genuine" than the previous one, like it was a sequel made to be a sequel, rather than to continue a narrative. The activity is increased, and similarly restrained as the original, but it ends up being a lot of the same stuff happening over and over. And overall that's what this movie is, just things happening.
Also another one of those movies with one single scene arbitrarily set while the character—played by the director—is on vacation... which technically makes that whole trip business expense.
5/10 - DirectorTurner ClayStarsTurner ClayA filmmaker takes a journey to discover a new haunted house and brings along his cameras to document what happens inside.Very much a mixed bag. There's a new house, and a new ghost, but the same guy. It seems like there is something of an attempt to shift the focus from the haunting, to the filmmaker—who may or may not be psychic now—but that doesn't really play out through any kind of development. The new location is accompanied by a much more well flashed-out backstory, but the haunting consists almost entirely of near constant banging that very quickly moves from creepy to annoying.
4/10 - DirectorTurner ClayStarsTurner ClayAfter Lightfoot's suicide, Turner probes Susan's murder at his house. Decoding a coded map amidst strange events, he finds Susan's body and unravels clues linking her death to Lightfoot.Basically just a continuation of part 3, except this time they actually do focus on how the progressing obsession with the hauntings is negatively affecting the filmmaker and go back to being a little more subtle than someone hammering in the other room... mind you, the hammering is still there, just not all the damn time. Also features one of the coolest pieces of ghost-hunting gear I've seen, although then expects us to believe that this guy can wire up an experimental ghost communication device, but not pick up a simple clue that it spits out.
Unfortunately, it will leave you very unsatisfied in terms of story, only providing crumbs of new lore. It feels—Like Paranormal Activity before it—like they're just trying to stretch one move's worth of story across an entire series.
5/10 - DirectorTurner ClayStarsTurner ClayEd ThomasIn this 5th installment of "The Blackwell Ghost" series, the ghost hunting filmmaker returns to the "Lightfoot House" where he hopes to solve a newly discovered puzzle which may lead to the location of more undiscovered victims.Picking up from part 4—in the weird way this series does—and more or less comparable in quality, although the did seem to drop the direction they had been taking the character in the previous two. Things are a bit more purposeful than the last two and it does finally seem to wrap up the story—although it does leave a little teaser at the end. However, it does feel like that story could have been wrapped up in a single movie instead of spreading it across three.
5/10 - DirectorTurner ClayStarsTurner ClayA filmmaker attempts to capture paranormal events on camera all while trying to protect his children from the ghost that haunts their house. This is the 6th installment of "The Blackwell Ghost" series.A big left turn for the series, basically abandoning the teaser at the end of the previous movie for a more personal story. Which they did by killing the wife character and making it about her ghost. Unfortunately, she was such a minor character in the previous 5 movies that it's hard to really feel the sense of loss from her absence. There are still some references to the Lightfoot house, he even goes there several times, but very little connection to that story. There's also about ten times as much footage of his kids as there needs to be for the story and it ends up feeling like someone making you look at pictures of their children for an hour. Overall has the feeling of "I need to make another one... well, I got a free weekend." It's okay on its own, but the worst in the series so far.
4/10 - DirectorTurner ClayStarsTurner ClayA filmmaker attempts to continue his paranormal adventure but finds himself stalked and tormented by a dangerous person who follows his every move.Another change in direction, but one that is much more welcome. Picking up from the end up part 5, it continues the story of the Ligthfoot haunting, but now focusing much more on the actual murders and how the filmmaker inadvertently pulled himself into the situation by making the previous documentaries. It does feel a bit like they're finally dropping a bit of the kayfabe in favor of a more engaging story and some better cinematography. Which is fine by me because I'd much rather have a better movie than a move believable one. And of course it does leave us with a major teaser—it's kinda a thing with this series—so hopefully there are more on the way. But overall definitely the best since the original.
7/10 - DirectorJohn SabatineStarsJess PaulJohnathon L. JacksonJordan StreussnigWhen five urban explorers enter an abandoned brewery to film the latest episode of their web series, they disturb the final resting place of a group of artists that once called it home.An urban exploration found footage movie that seemed to understand what it was supposed to do, but didn't execute it exceptionally well. It is visually interesting and exciting at times, but they fail to really tell a story. (4/10)
- DirectorAndy PalmerStarsChad Michael MurrayDanielle HarrisMichael Eric ReidA paranormal team sets to check out an abandoned summer camp where a mass murder had taken place decades previous.Overall decent “paranormal investigation gone wrong” movie, but this time at a camp. Good atmosphere, some decent spooks, and a nice mix of found and regular footage. However, the ending is a little underwhelming.
(6/10) - DirectorKurt ElaKipp TribbleStarsKurt ElaKipp TribbleNick GrecoTwo friends visit fire-ravaged Ojai, California, intent on making a fake documentary about the infamous Ojai Vampire. However, things take a bizarre and frightening turn when they learn about a different local legend: The Char Man.A found footage movie about thee filmmakers making a hoax documentary on one urban legend that end up getting caught up in a different, very real one. It is very much in the veil of The Blair Witch Project, but in a way where the influence is more thematic and structural than it is surface-level. So while there's very little running around in the woods, there is a legend with multiple different stories and events that you cant really be sure how they fit together. It is definitely not a movie that spoon feeds you answers. You can make conclusions based on what you're shown, but they very purposefully don't spell it out for you.
4/10 - DirectorJonas OdenheimerStarsValentina KolaricMike McLaughlinMaurice MejiaA local reporter and her assembled TV crew go into a school haunted by a horrific past. The team spends the night locked inside the building, capturing any and everything they find.
- DirectorJames WanStarsPatrick WilsonVera FarmigaRon LivingstonParanormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. An incredibly good move, punctuated with some pointless melodrama. And a very rare case actually living up to the hype. It's got a creepy atmosphere, a good pace to the building of the spook intensity, and... an okay ending.
8/10 - DirectorJames WanStarsVera FarmigaPatrick WilsonMadison WolfeEd and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit. This movie takes a lot of what was good in the first one and does it better. More spooks, bigger spooks, and a more complex story. Also less of the pointless melodrama and... a better ending.
8/10 - DirectorIsaac RodriguezStarsAli AlkhafajiChristine BrownSarah FroelichIn 1999, two friends use a webcam for the first time and stumble across a mysterious browser game that may be haunted.A movie in the video conference desktop capture style of Unfriended, but based around a spooky 90s adventure game. Good for what it is, but the good parts do kinda draw attention to how bad the bad parts are. (5/10)
- DirectorJoe SmalleyTess SmalleyStarsJosh FolanChris PerryNatalie WettaFocuses on two television crews of paranormal experts: one team of skeptics looking to de-bunk myths about ghosts and another consisting of believers looking to prove their existence. Teaming up for the first time for a special episode, the crews get more than they bargained for when they actually make contact with a spirit of tremendous power and must band together to stop it before it destroys them all.Semi-found footage movie about multiple teams with conflicting goals investigating a haunted asylum. Characters aren't awful, the conflict is believable, and the spooks are pretty good. However, the ending leaves more than a little to be desired.
5/10 - DirectorJack SnyderStarsMike ColemanTerry ComerCarol Carlberg-SnyderA group of university students are invited by their parapsychology professor to investigate a haunted house for the weekend.Spooky house investigation turns up demonic shenanigans. Overall okay, but plagued by awkward dialogue and subpar audio editing. There are however some very memorable effects for the demon. (4/10)
- DirectorRicky UmbergerOn April 19th, 2016, Deputy Leo Cole vanished. The next morning, his body camera was found. So the most important thing to know going into this movie—and a titbit that the promotional materials do a good job ignoring—is that this in an anthology. The framing device—investigating a house that was supposed to no longer exist—is interesting in theory, but it practice it ends up being wandering around a dark house, occasionally picking up and playing a VHS tape. The other stories themselves are middling at best, and don't tie to each other or to the main story in any way. And overall, that framing device is the best of the four stories you get here, but even that feels a bit more like a live-action version of a jumpscare-filled indie horror game than it does a compelling narrative. On the upside, the "found footage movie where someone finds footage" element is a little amusing.
3/10 - DirectorSteve GibsonStarsSeth DrickChip FackaBrianna HealeyThe wildly popular TV reality series, Ghost Chasers, is hitting its 4th year on the air; to commemorate this milestone, the members of the Ghost Chasers team have decided to broadcast their anniversary show out to the world live.Another "paranormal investigation show gone wrong" movie, but one that does a good job of keeping the spooks at a reasonable level, and feeling like an actual broadcast. Although some of the effects are... outside their budget.
5/10 - DirectorUmberto LenziStarsLara WendelGreg RhodesMary SellersVisions of a deceased girl and her doll bring doom to the visitors of a deserted house.A haunted house movie that... tries. Honestly, aside from an over-reliance on the spooky ghost girl and clown doll, it's got some petty solid spooks and a few interesting ideas. (5/10)
- DirectorJeff FerrellStarsEden CampbellLisa CoronadoDavid A. CrellinA man spends one night alone inside a haunted theater for a large cash prize. Will he live until morning?Boring and pretentious, trying REALLY hard to be a serious deep melodrama. And, here’s a little suggestion: If you think that horror movies are somehow “beneath you,” then maybe don't try to make a horror movie.
3/10 - DirectorLesley ManningStarsMichael ParkinsonSarah GreeneMike SmithIn a "live" broadcast on Halloween night, a BBC team investigate a reported poltergeist in an ordinary London home.
- DirectorPetr JáklStarsJennifer ArmourAlina GolovlyovaJeremy IsabellaThree American filmmakers become the targets of the evil spirit of the most violent cannibal in recorded history.Ghoul (2015)
A found footage film that seems like it's trying to do something different, but really ends up just feeling like a generic possession film. The dressing is a little different, but a lot of the time it seems like things are happening, just to have things happen.
