Star Trek Movies: The Original Cast
I just watched the entire "original series" of Star Trek movies, the first six featuring the classic TV show cast and boy, what a wild ride. After some robust debate, here's my ranking of the classic films.

- DirectorNicholas MeyerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWith the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop an old nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh, from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.A movie that's exactly as awesome as they say. Gloriously over-the-top acting, a great script, strong themes and a powerful emotional conclusion make for a solid science fiction classic.
10 stars - DirectorNicholas MeyerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyOn the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace. This one still has its heart in the right place and contains a moving send-off to the series, as well as some original ideas that keep it feeling fresh.
9 stars - DirectorLeonard NimoyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyTo save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to San Francisco in 1986 to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it: humpback whales.I never would have believed the "save the whales" installment would be one of my favourites in the series, but it's such a delight. It works in exactly the way some of the more lighthearted episodes of the TV show do. The fish-out-of-water humour fits perfectly with the outlandish premise. A very enjoyable movie showcasing the absolute best of a beloved cast of characters.
9 stars - DirectorLeonard NimoyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyAdmiral Kirk and his bridge crew risk their careers stealing the decommissioned U.S.S. Enterprise to return to the restricted Genesis Planet to recover Spock's body. Not as memorable as the two movies it's flanked by, but this one still gets a lot of goodwill from me for its heartfelt treatment of the characters. Maybe it's not absolutely top-tier, but it's definitely worth watching.
7 stars - DirectorWilliam ShatnerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyCaptain Kirk and his crew must deal with Mr. Spock's long-lost half-brother who hijacks the Enterprise for an obsessive search for God at the center of the galaxy. Some of the humour actually works and some of it is just embarrassing. Overall, the reliance on overt slapstick does not mix well with the deadly serious drama the rest of the film is reaching for and the central conflict is too poorly-defined to be at all compelling. There's some glorious schlock to be seen here, but, overall, a very disappointing entry in the series.
4 stars - DirectorRobert WiseStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWhen an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral James T. Kirk resumes command of the overhauled USS Enterprise in order to intercept it.A very rocky start to a mostly excellent series. While its plot does feel straight from the classic show, it's not nearly enough to sustain your attention for the whole running time and I personally thought the revelation at the end was a letdown.
