- DirectorChad MoldenhauerJared MoldenhauerStarsLuke de AyoraDenise HattonAlana BridgewaterAn anthropomorphic cup embarks on a journey and fights a series of bosses to repay a debt to the devil.Cuphead is absolute perfection. The game is so fun and refreshing, and feels so new due to its artstyle and music. The game takes around 10 hours, but has almost no filler along that journey. I can't stress how many layers the atmosphere of this game adds. The only flaw I can think to suggest is some flight segments are slightly worse than the on the ground and some balancing issues, but rather than that, every boss and level feels so unique and different from the last. Each one sticks out not only atmosphere wise, but also through its gameplay. I've heard people say that the visuals should tie more to the gameplay, which I find they already do. The boss gives greater tells to their attacks through the animation, making fighting ruthless. I can't stress enough how amazing this game is and I would definitely recommend it.
- DirectorJonatan SöderströmDennis WedinFollows several characters all living after the events from the original "Hotline Miami" game, you play as many characters all with their own abilities in this action slasher game. This is a masterpiece of a game. This game gets so much right it's genuinely shocking. The gameplay is the most action packed and adrenaline pumping game bar none, not to mention being the perfect narrative. This is how you put your politics in games, implemented under the context of the situation and not slapping you in the face. It weaves you into its complex multi-narrative, than calms down only to give you that amazing ending. There's like 1 or 2 levels that are skips, but rather than that, its nearly flawless
- DirectorDerek YuSpelunky 2 builds upon the unique, randomized challenges that made the original a roguelike classic, offering a huge adventure designed to satisfy players old and new, Searching for treasure and missing family.Spelunky 2 is by far my most played indie games. One of my fondest memories is getting the original spelunky on my xbox 360 and playing it until my middle finger hurt because you had to hold down the run button, and while I'm fond of that original game, I would be lying to myself if I said this game didn't outclass it on nearly every level. The item balancing is still perfect even with everything new included. Even after over 160 hours of this game, I keep finding new environmental interactions. This game is so refreshing in the sea of modern rogue likes.
- DirectorChris NordgrenJordi RocaAn UNCONVENTIONAL ADVENTURE RPG that takes place in an inexpressible world filled with amusing musical battles and strange delightful encounters. To put it simply: You are in for a ride.It might be too early to say this is the fourth best indie game of all time, but I think its well deserved. This game is like a rhythm game from hell that took an acid trip. The gameplay is absolutely brutal, but in between those moments of insanity are story beats and exploration. Nearly every boss shines, and are all pretty memorable due to the game's weirdness. Among your adventure you meet a frog with a guitar, an evil atm machine, and gnomes that take you on an acid trip. This all happens within the first hour of the game. This game is also a major contender for one of the best ost's in games.
- DirectorEdmund McMillenTommy RefenesMeat Boy goes to rescue his girlfriend Bandage Girl, who's been kidnapped by the evil Dr. Fetus. This game on the surface seems like nothing more than a dime a dozen rage game, but look underneath the surface to find one of the most well designed tough as nails 2d platformers of all time. Its also insane how much content this game holds, with secret worlds, community generated levels, and extra characters give this game hours of added on content. This game usually goes on sale for under 5 dollars, and I can definitely recommend it.
- DirectorEdmund McMillenStarsPatty Allen-StottMatthias BossiCarla KihlstedtIsaac escapes through his basement and fights demonic monsters and avoids deadly traps, in order to escape his mother, who was commanded by God to sacrifice him. This one is prone to go up in the ranks, but I need to get the motivation to play it. However, this is still one of the most finely tuned rogue likes ever created. I haven't played the dlc yet, but this game on its own is so content filled it's impressive. This is a game you definitely need to try out, it doesn't matter if rogue likes aren't your thing, or top down shooters don't interest you, just try it. It's also important to mention the story to the game which is hopeless and depressing along with the commentary on media and religion. In short, Edmund McMillen is a genius and I'm excited for anything with his name on it.
- DirectorAustin JorgensenA story about the journey of Brad Armstrong, a man who is attempting to save his adopted daughter, Buddy - the last female in Olathe - who has been kidnapped.Lisa is a testament to indie games uniqueness. This game would be nonexistant without the existant of the internet. Lisa is sometimes so purposefully bad and terrible in game design and mood, its kind of hard to critique. However this is one of the funniest, most intense, and also most thoughtful rpgs I've ever played. This game is a real challenge sometimes, and I don't recommend playing it all at once, as it can damper your overall enjoyment on a first playthrough.
- DirectorToby FoxStarsBill FagerbakkeToby FoxWillard ScottEnter the Underground, a massive subterranean cave where monsters who once lived harmoniously with humans on the surface have been banished after losing a war with humanity.Undertale is, in my opinion, probably the most essential game on this list. Does that mean its the best, no(I mean, there's a reason its at 8th), but I recommend it to anyone who wants to get into indie games as a whole. It's whole gimmick of choose who lives wasn't the first to do it, but certainly implemented it the best. The soundtrack is another standout about this game, as nearly every song stands out. Unfortunately, I have a lot more to critique about this game, like the gameplay being substandard compared to its contemporaries and the genocide run only having two bosses in the almost 6 to 10 hours of gameplay. Flaws aside, still a wonderful game that I definitely recommend.
- Summoned to a self contained digital universe, a young child with catlike features and eyes, waking up, learns about their role as 'the messiah'. And begins their journey, a pilgrimage, to restore the world's long dead sun.I think this is the point in the list where we stop seeing amazing games, and start seeing just great games. Not to say one shot is a substandard game, its just the gameplay is lackluster to say the least. To its credit, one shot gives one of the most immersive and character driven stories. Legitamately, no other game has gotten me invested in a character like Niko. It's also an amazing example of doing 4th wall breaks. Not only does it add to the games immersion but also the characterization and isn't corny or pretentious.
