Westerns - The first Westerns in Widescreen (1930-1954)
The first western using a widescreen ratio was the 1930 John Wayne film 'The Big Trail' directed by Raoul Walsh. The next one came 23 years later during the widescreen boom of 1953. It was 'Shane' directed by George Stevens. Although it was shot and composed for 1.37:1, Paramount had it cropped/re-formatted and released to the cinemas as their very first color Widescreen western in a ratio of 1.66:1.
