- DirectorViggo LarsenStarsAugust BlomGudrun KjerulfViggo LarsenAfter the united powers of Europe had been successful in defeating Napoleon's vast armies, the great Emperor himself was taken prisoner and sent into exile to the Island of Elba, on the coast of Corsica. His loyal friends in France, however, would not rest, and were untiring in their efforts to liberate the Emperor from his prison. The first part of this film depicts a meeting of a few of these friends and supporters, who formulate a plan. A letter is written to Napoleon, explaining that a messenger will bring him all particulars and plans of a plot to liberate him. A young officer is elected to make the dangerous journey to Elba, to carry to Napoleon the message from his friends. But these friends did not count on the enemies which every great man has, and did not observe that one of them attended their eventful meeting. The traitor informs the police, whose assistance he obtains, and together they go in pursuit of the messenger. Tired and exhausted, the messenger finds rest for a night at a small inn on the road, but not long after his arrival there his two pursuers arrive also, and over a glass of wine discuss how they can best capture the messenger. The daughter of the innkeeper, a great admirer of Napoleon, overhears the discussion of the two men, and immediately warns the messenger, who has just sufficient time to ride away, hotly pursued by the enemies. Fortunately, he soon reaches a farm house on his way, and induces the farmer to give him other clothes. Hastily changing his dress, and with the assistance of the farmer, who shows the pursuers the wrong way, he manages to get to the frontier. He arrives safely at the coast, from which he is to take the boat to Elba. Before he lands on the coast of the island, his small craft is demolished by the waves, and he is compelled to swim through the foaming sea to his destination. But even here, on this lonely island, he is discovered by a sentry, who uses his rifle effectively, and with a bullet-wound in his shoulder the poor messenger turns back into the water, pretending to be killed. Swimming to a more secluded spot along the coast, he sees the figure of his beloved Emperor standing by the water, looking sadly in the direction of his country. Trembling with excitement, the brave messenger approaches Napoleon and delivers to him the message. Napoleon, deeply moved by the loyalty of his friends, thanks the messenger in kind words, and embraces him, to show his deep and sincere gratitude.

- DirectorAugust BlomStarsValdemar PsilanderCarl LauritzenAage HertelEileen Wells is receiving a call from her fiancé, Lieutenant Masters, when her father, General Wells, and her brother, Gordon, who is a Lieutenant, arrive bringing the startling news that war has been declared against their country by the Government of Lieutenant Masters, who is the military attaché to the embassy of the hostile country. General Wells dismisses him from his house as he is now an enemy. Upon departing for his country Lieutenant Masters returns to bid farewell to Eileen, and she gives him a carrier pigeon so that he may communicate with her. Before leaving for the scene of action, the General and Gordon acquiesce to Eileen's desire to serve as a red-cross nurse. An orderly brings to General Wells' headquarters the announcement that the Prince will, at two o'clock the next day, present the colors to the 5th Battery. This Battery is under command of Lieutenant Powell, who, acting as a tool for the enemy, steals over to the opposing forces to acquaint their commander with the presentation of the colors, and advise a surprise attack at that hour. The traitor quickly returns to his camp. In his own tent, he constructs a bomb, and places the deadly missile in a huge long-range cannon, timing the explosion for the hour of the Prince's presence. Perceiving that there is a traitor in General Wells' army, and realizing the grave danger that threatens his sweetheart's father, after a few moments deliberation, his love for Eileen prevails over his duty to his country. Lieutenant Masters dispatches a note with the pigeon, advising her that a traitor has given information of the color presentation, and that a sudden attack will take place at that hour. Eileen frantically speeds to the front in a motor car, and miraculously eluding the fusillade of the picket, she reaches her brother's camp, and imparts to him the plot. Like a flash he mounts his horse, and rides to the General's headquarters, arriving in the nick of time to save the Prince, his father and staff from the deadly explosion of the bomb. Forthwith a terrible battle ensues, the enemy manifesting splendid heroism, unheeding the multitude of shrieking, bursting shells which mow down many of their number, fairly covering the battlefield with dead and wounded. Gradually all the trenches fall into the hands of the advancing army, save the last one, which, under the command of Lieutenant Masters, offers a most obstinate resistance. The battalion of Lieutenant Wells soon overpowers it; a violent bayonet charge follows, during which Lieutenant Wells witnesses Lieutenant Masters' fall. The enemy is repulsed from its position by Lieutenant Wells' forces, and completely routed. During the interim, Eileen is nobly caring for the wounded soldiers in a field hospital, where her brother finds her, and tells her how he saw Lieutenant Masters fall, firmly clasping his country's flag. Eileen, anxious to learn her sweetheart's fate, induces Gordon to accompany her to the battlefield. After searching for some time, they finally come across Lieutenant Masters lying among the dead, seriously wounded. They have him placed upon a stretcher, and send him to their home, which had been converted into an emergency hospital. Determined to drive the enemy from their last stronghold, Lieutenant Wells volunteers to blow up this fortress. Up and down snow-covered mountains, through the intricacies of barbed-wire entanglements, and overcoming numerous obstacles, he at last reaches the fortress. The sentries guarding the entrance are killed by a bursting shell, whereupon the Lieutenant, entering the court, comes face to face with Powell, who offers his sword to Wells that he may kill him. The latter rejecting the sword, ignites a bomb, the explosion of which shatters the powder magazine, killing and burying under the debris the traitor. Accompanied by strains of martial music, the victorious army marches into the fortress, and receives the surrender of the holding forces, thus consummating a complete victory. Soon after, General Wells has returned to his home, the Prince comes to confer decorations upon him and his son for their heroism. Lieutenant Masters, now convalescing, under the care of Eileen, obtains the consent of her father to their marriage, and receives the praises of the Prince for his services to the country.

Harvey Stacey and his assistant, George Warren, Central Office men, have been detailed on the case. With the exception of a torn telegram, advising the widow that night of the arrival of her nephew, there seems to be no clues. Suspicion points to the nephew, and the detectives search for more evidence. A sheet of paper, upon examination, reveals finger marks; one finger is missing. Stacey telephones to headquarters ordering a watch kept on all railway stations, and any man with but four fingers on one hand detained. Meanwhile, in his house, Morton, the real murderer, decides it will be safer to make his getaway. Hurriedly he puts on his coat and gloves, which almost conceal his deformed hand, and hastens to the station. At the ticket office a detective "spots" him, and notifies Stacey, who orders the train held. Morton becomes uneasy at the delay and seeing central office men approaching, makes his escape. Pursued, he reaches his house, and disguises himself as an old woman. Later Morton sends a telegram to Warren telling him to go to the Villa Falcon. The latter is met upon his arrival by Morton and his accomplice, who bind and gag him. Then they telephone for Stacey, who is suspicious of the message, and takes four policemen with him. These he orders to remain outside, and enters the Villa. He also is bound. Coletti has taken charge of a bank robbery case, and the editor of the Continental Daily Mail publishes an article in which he chides the detective for mismanagement of the case. As it was known the criminal remained in Berlin for forty-eight hours after the robbery; the article claimed that had Coletti published and distributed inscription of the criminal someone of the millions of inhabitants of Berlin would have captured him. In an open letter to the editor of the paper, Coletti states it is almost impossible to unearth a man hidden away in as large a city as Berlin, and to back up his statement, offers a reward of $25,000 to any person who can capture him within forty-eight hours after a full description of himself, and his photograph, have been printed in every newspaper, and posted all around the city. The challenge is accepted. All the inhabitants of Berlin, except Anton, the barber, and Lolette, Coletti's fiancée, are seeking the detective. Anton disguises as the detective, and Coletti assumes the rough clothes of a street sweeper. Freely mingling with the crowd, Coletti keeps his eyes open for Anton, whom he presently sees boarding a bus. Then a wild mob pursues Anton, but the athletic barber makes his escape by jumping from the fast going vehicle. After running a short distance he sees a Zeppelin airship about to sail away. In a mad jump he succeeds in boarding the airship, which has a good many passengers on board. Taking a seat, Anton calls for a drink, and is very much astonished to find that the waiter who serves him is Coletti himself. Finally a stout lady passenger observes Anton, and feeling confident she has captured Coletti, keeps a firm hold on the collar of Anton's coat. When the airship descends she marches poor Anton off to the editor's office to claim the $25,000. While the mob that has followed the fair stout lady are cheering her to the top of their lungs, Anton calmly removes his disguise, and distributes his business cards, and then they realize they have been tricked. In the meantime, Coletti has constantly mingled with the masses in various disguises. Then a celebrated police dog is put on the trail of Coletti. While Coletti and his sweetheart are enjoying themselves at a nearby café the crowd follows the police dog. The dog is on the scent, tugging at the leash with all his might he makes for the café. As they enter the café Lolette begins to dance, while Coletti goes into an adjoining room and changes back to his own clothing. Time has been flying fast; the mob has been watching in admiration the dancing of Lolette, then the inner door opens and a wild dash is made at the man who enters, Coletti himself, who calmly raising his hand, says, "Yes, you have caught me, but you are five minutes too late."

He is scarcely seated in a quiet corner when a hideous, shriveled-up old man taps him upon the shoulder and whispers vaguely of a big inheritance for Prague's finest swordsman and wildest student if he will enter into a certain agreement. Balduin rebuffs him, satirically asking his weird companion to procure him "the luckiest ticket in a lottery or a doweried wife." The old man goes off chuckling and thence onward persistently shadows Balduin, exerting a sinister influence over him, while Balduin is still disconsolate under the frowns of fortune. The Countess Margit Schwarzenberg, hunting with her cousin, to whom her father has betrothed her, meets with an accident. She is thrown over her horse's head into a river, but Balduin, who has been directed to the spot by his evil genius, plunges in and rescues her. Subsequently Balduin calls to inquire as to her condition at the castle of her father, the count, but be makes a hurried departure when Baron Waldis arrives, the contrast in their appearance discrediting him. His desire to win the countess and to humiliate the baron becomes so pronounced that he readily accedes to the compact suggested by Scapinelli, the old man, who has so pertinaciously dogged his footsteps, particularly when he learns that untold wealth and power will be his when he assigns to the other the right to take from his room whatever he chooses for his own use as he desires. The agreement is signed. Balduin receives a shower of gold and notes as his portion; Scapinelli takes Balduin's soul exposed in concrete form by his shadow. Balduin prosecutes his love affair assiduously and with apparent success, till the baron is informed of it by a jealous gypsy girl. He challenges Balduin to a duel, and the latter, assured of his superiority as a fencer, readily agrees. Count Schwarzenberg learns of the impending duel and appeals to Balduin not to kill "my sister's child, my daughter's future husband, and my heir." Balduin gives his promise, but when he goes to the venue of the duel he meets, his own counterpart stalking away derisively wiping his gory sword on his cloak. Balduin turns and in the far distance sees the dying victim of the deed he swore he would not do. He rushes from the spot horror-stricken. When he regains sufficient composure he makes his way to the castle of the count, but is refused admission. Determined to explain that he had no complicity in the death of the baron, Balduin climbs into a room in which the countess is seated. She receives him coldly, but soon succumbs to his ardent wooing. Just as he seeks to leave her she notices he has no shadow and that the mirror gives no reflection of him; and she drops back affrighted, the ghastly apparition of himself which takes shape in the corner of the room sends Balduin scuttling away from the castle in a paroxysm of terror. He makes a frenzied flight through a woodland estate and the streets of Prague, but wherever he stops to recover his breath he is haunted by the counterpart of himself. He reaches his rooms and draws a murderous looking fire-arm from its case. As the phantasmagorical figure strides towards him with a sinister grin, he fires, and in a few minutes the blood gushes from his own side from a fatal wound.

Holmes' foe is called Stapleton and he menaces Holmes' client Lord Henry and his fiancée, Laura Lyons, masquerading himself as Holmes. Hidden passages, hand bombs and mechanical devices abound, reminding more of a serial than of a Conan Doyle story.
- DirectorMax ReinhardtStarsMaria CarmiJoseph KleinAlfred AbelVenice, what emotions it awakens in the Young Stranger as he reads about it in his book. He decides to pay this beautiful city a visit. Upon his arrival, he walks from the railroad station to the landing place on the Grand Canal. There the crowd watches him with amusement as he blunderingly makes his way. Pitrello, a hotel tout, sees in the awkward Young Stranger a likely mark. He seizes his baggage, hurries him into a gondola and conducts him through a network of canals and bridges to the hotel. In the meantime, the Bridegroom, a rich wine merchant, is escorting his young Bride to the church where they are to be married. She is unutterably sad because her heart is elsewhere. Suddenly her face lights up; nearby stands the Officer, her true love. And now the gondola of the Young Stranger nears the scene. He lands and, as he is looking about curiously, the bridal party passes and he is smitten with the beauty of the pale Bride. After the services the bridal party proceeds toward the hotel, the same one for which the Young Stranger is headed. The Young Bride cannot forget her Officer. She throws a rose to him as he stands below looking at her pleadingly. The Young Stranger, mistaking her intention, thinks the rose is meant for him. A merry wedding feast is held in the courtyard of the hotel. The Officer waits for stolen sweets and the Bride smiles at him. Her smiles the Young Stranger intercepts and takes for himself. Love's message meant for another. While the dancing continues, the Bride pleads sudden indisposition and retires to her room. The Young Stranger in an adjoining room goes to sleep with the rose of his romance at his lips. The events of the day had made a deep impression upon him, and now his brain, active in sleep, conjures up before him a wonderful dream. At first all the people he met during the events of the day pass before him in a shadowy dance. Then he sees the room of the Bride. Within it stands the Officer, pleading with her. There is a knock at the door. What shall she do? She hides him behind the curtains and the Bridegroom enters. He has been drinking very freely. But now Pitrello drops from the upper transom. Unseen by the Bridegroom, he stealthily creeps behind the curtain and engages in mortal combat with the Officer. He kills the Officer, but so swiftly and silently is this accomplished that only the Bride, her face turned toward the combatants, is aware of the tragedy. She renews her pleading with her husband that he leave her room for the night. He yields to her request. The criminal Pitrello had, in the meantime, escaped. Terror-stricken, the Bride hides the dead body in her own bed. From the Young Stranger's room the Bride hears a song of love. An idea occurs to her. She will ask him to dispose of the body for her. He sees her, dresses rapidly and follows. The Young Stranger pleads his love. Suddenly the Bride horrifies him by showing him the corpse. She entreats him to help her. At first he is reluctant, but finally he consents. The Young Stranger drags the body to the balcony. Pitrello, however, dogs his every step and frustrates his intentions. Here is an opportunity, the deep well. Into its depth the dead body will go. But no, Pitrello squats upon the lid and the Young Stranger drags the corpse to a boat. He boards the boat with his dreadful charge, so does Pitrello. For the far-off shores of the Island of the Dead he steers and there he throws the body into the silent waters of the lagoon. At last he is free to rejoin the Bride. But Pitrello leaps into the waters and drags the body back to shore. Then he conjures up three more bodies. He sets them up, one after another, like so many nine-pins and the Young Stranger recoils from the ghastly sight. Outlined in shadow, the little craft re-crosses the waters of the lagoon. When the Young Stranger lands, however, he is again confronted with peril. The Officer, come to life, rushes at him, sword in hand. They fence and the Young Stranger is victorious. Another Officer, however, leaps toward him. Another scuffle. Thus he struggles with the four and kills them. But he has reckoned without Pitrello. His Evil Genius breathes hack the spark of life into them. They arise and pursue the fleeing Young Stranger. A vast mob brandishing weapons follows after. But the Young Stranger manages to reach the Bride's room. There he relates his fearful misadventures. She listens to him sadly and at last rewards him with a kiss. The drinking and dancing had continued in the lobby of the hotel all through the night. The Bridegroom, drunk, is conducted by the servants, under the leadership of Pitrello, into the Young Stranger's room. They deposit the Bridegroom in the Young Stranger's bed. But the Young Stranger soon begins to feel the weight of his little bed partner. At first he imagines that the hand he holds belongs to the Bride, but he is soon disillusioned. In disgust, he wriggles his way out of bed, dresses and gets ready for departure. The Bride has come out smiling and inquires after her husband. There is much commotion among the servants working eagerly for the much coveted tips. Pitrello, ever quick, has stirred into action even the lazy fellow, who, tired from the revelry of last night, is sleeping on the stairs. All is bustle and hurry-scurry as the bridal party leaves in a gondola. Poor Young Stranger. His dream of love cannot stand the daylight of reality. Sadly he notes how the Bride has made room in the gondola for the Officer. The fat Bridegroom is too stupid to know her real feelings, but the Young Stranger understands. He presses to his lips the cherished rose of sweet romance, and as the bridal party glides under the bridge on which he is standing, he showers its petals upon her.
