All her hopes of helping her grandfather, fail. At that moment, Angel, a young potter, arrives. He brings her the pots she had ordered. With surprising ease and understanding, he helps Ina finish off the mosaic she had begun a long time ago. The Grandfather, pleased that he has managed to remove the 'bad' people from the path of his granddaughter, gives his blessing to the pleasant young boy.

She decides to cross the border illegally and find her father and prove to everyone that they love each other. Her efforts to get money to pay the smuggler to get her over the border are a supreme trial for her. Overcoming many dangers, Rufie makes a most difficult decision; she cuts off her hair and pretends to be a boy, in order to be accepted in the group. During the difficult winter crossing over the mountains, she meets a boy - the same age as her. He is with his father. Rufie experiences the first tremors of love, but cannot share them since she is a 'boy'. Hairedin, Rufie1s father, is in a group of refugees who traveling back to Bulgaria. The father is coming back now to live with her forever. The two groups pass each other by. Hairedin and Rufie do not recognize each other in the dark.

He burns their house with his wife's body inside and abandons the gentle life they had shared, choosing instead to take his daughter to live in a rough hut high in the hills. He raises Maria as a boy, training her to fight so that she can kill in cold blood and help her father avenge her mother's murder. Nine years pass before the two locate and kill three of the four perpetrators. At each body they leave a goat horn as the symbol of their revenge. While on a mission to kill the last one at his rich oriental house, Maria becomes the unwitting witness of a love scene and change comes over her. Now, from time to time she secretly dons a beautiful women dress and exults in her newly found femininity. She falls in love with young shepherd and the hate begins to melt from her heart. When Karaivan discovers the change that is taking place in her it is already late. He tries to bring Maria back to him and their life of revenge, with disastrous results.
