10 titles
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsKeir DulleaGary LockwoodWilliam SylvesterAfter uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.I don’t remember where I heard this review but the movie begins with a title card reading “the dawn of man” and never gives another one. The movie in all its glory, cinematography and score boils down to one small thing - what is man?
- DirectorDziga VertovStarsMikhail KaufmanElizaveta SvilovaA man travels around a city with a camera slung over his shoulder, documenting urban life with dazzling invention.the cinematography is so alive, the movie tells the tale of a city and it’s main character is the camera. It feels more modern then many movies that come out today even though it is almost 100 years old.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsBibi AnderssonLiv UllmannMargaretha KrookA nurse is put in charge of a mute actress and finds that their personae are melding together.both characters at the same time are both silent and both don’t stop talking. They way both women meld to one is an image that will never leave my mind. When I finished the movie I wasn’t able to speak for an hour.
- DirectorFrançois TruffautStarsJean-Pierre LéaudAlbert RémyClaire MaurierA young boy, left without attention, delves into a life of petty crime.for the past 3 years I’ve been researching the gap between childhood and adulthood, between innocence and the loss of it and the 400 blows encompasses everything about childhood. From the hole movie being from Antoine’s perspective, to the carousel scene (which encompasses both youth and what movie making is) to the harsh reality of needing to grow up when faced with hardship.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEthan HawkeJulie DelpyAndrea EckertA young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together.I don’t know if they way they talk is real but I wish that me and my lover would talk the way Jesse and Celine talk. They feel so real and relatable and there are a couple of moments that feel like they transcend time - the listening booth in sunrise, Celine playing the song in sunset and the fight in midnight. The whole cycle of love in 3 movies across 18 years. Unfortunately they didn’t release another part this year.
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsVicky KriepsDaniel Day-LewisLesley ManvilleSet in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover. One of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had. Going in to the movie I thought it was a drama until the tea scene were you understand it’s a comedy. I went again two more times and every time the whole crowd burst into laughter at the same time. Also an amazing and difficult love story.
- DirectorLuis BuñuelStarsSilvia PinalJacqueline AndereEnrique RambalThe guests at an upper-class dinner party find themselves unable to leave.I really love magical realism movies where we don’t question the mythical elements that are in the movie. When the bourgeoisie can’t leave and the regular people can’t enter is amazing. Seeing what hides behind manners when all the bourgeoisie are stuck on an island together is a real life lord of the flies.
- DirectorEphraim KishonStarsShaike OphirZaharira HarifaiAvner HizkiyahuOne of Israel's most beloved films, this film centers around the policeman Azulai, who is as kind as he as inept.in my opinion the best Israeli comedy from Israel best know wave - bourekas films, incredible dialogue and commentary on Israeli society.
- DirectorWim WendersStarsBruno GanzSolveig DommartinOtto SanderAn angel tires of his purely ethereal life of merely overseeing the human activity of Berlin's residents, and longs for the tangible joys of physical existence when he falls in love with a mortal.Peter fall talking to an angel he can’t see will be forever etched in my memory as well as Nick Cave in berlin. An angel turning to be human and learning what it’s all about is great. Amazing black and white and color photography and one of the most original ideas I’ve ever seen.
- DirectorAlbert LamorisseStarsPascal LamorisseSabine LamorisseGeorges SellierA red balloon with a mind of its own follows a little boy around the streets of Paris.a true telling of innocence of a young boy and his pet balloon, the balloon is so alive and so full of character is incredible and the final scene where the balloon is popped and he flies off with the rest of the balloons will always make me cry.
