On September 11, 1973 a right wing military coup seized my grandfather' life and government, forced us into exile and placed a repressive dictatorship in Chile for 17 years. Thirty-five years later, I return to Chile searching for Chicho- his family nickname - wishing to leave behind his iconic image and bring back images and memories of him and our family. But for my family there are also many unresolved feelings associated with him. Through my journey I feel their reluctance and discomfort but also I begin to understand the complexity of their emotions for over 40 years. The paradox between public and private deepens my search and mirrors Chilean society.
- DirectorEloisa SolaasStarsMaría AlchéJonathan ArgüelloJuan BrizuelaSoláas's feature debut is a vérité chronicle of final examinations at Argentina's public universities, in which students from a wide array of disciplines-botany, anatomy, astronomy, law, physics, music-prepare for, worry about, and ultimately partake in oral tests. Soláas trains her focus on a diverse and disparate group of 12 such students, capturing the intensity, nerves, and pressure bound up in their by turns dramatic and absurd experience of the examinations. A singular work of observation and pathos, The Faculties offers a thought-provoking meditation on the contemporary state of education and marks an auspicious debut for Soláas.

- DirectorMarcelo GomesCao GuimarãesStarsPaulo AndréSílvia LourençoJean-Claude BernardetLoosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's story of the same name, Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimaraes, two of the most interesting filmmakers working in Brazil today, have crafted an elegant, parsimonious, and formally impeccable story of Juvenal, a lonely train driver in Belo Horizonte, and his encounter with Margo, a station controller. Emphasizing the theme of alienation in Poe's story and revealing Guimaraes's work as a visual artist, the two directors opted for an unusual, perfectly square aspect ratio, which intriguingly makes the film resemble a Polaroid. Juvenal and Margo, who each embody a different form of urban solitude, have been brought together in this beautifully composed ode to friendship.
- DirectorJesse LernerSandra RozentalFocusing on the removal and subsequent replications of a colossal pre-Hispanic rain deity taken from a small Mexican town to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, this film explores struggles over heritage and artifacts, contrasting diverse perspectives within the contemporary debate about cultural property and the stewardship of the past.
- DirectorMadiano MarchetiStarsNatália MazarimRafael de BonaPâmella YulleA broken body in a white dress, lying lifeless in a swaying soya field. The image of this motionless body lends an extra charge to everything that follows. Marcheti follows three protagonists in turn. They don't know one another, but are all in some way connected through Madalena. Luziane, a club hostess, knocks on her door for money. Wealthy Cristiano inspects the vast expanse of soya fields for his demanding father. Trans woman Bianca and her girlfriends divide Madalena's things between them while reminiscing. Marcheti shot the film in the agrarian region where he grew up, capturing with great visual flair this largely unfilmed rural part of Brazil. A place where big agricultural machinery crawls monster-like across the landscape and the farthest corners are known only to drones. A world that can also take on a spooky aspect - now and then, Marcheti inventively gives an eerie twist to even the most everyday scene. Madalena is above all a window on a world that is getting out of control. But Marcheti is also clearly making a statement about his country, which has the highest rate of murder of transgender people in the world. A plea for empathy, rather than pity.
