Two years after he leapt to the forefront of the New Hollywood with The Godfather, and just months before he picked up the threads of that operatic crime saga with the magnificent sequel/prequel The Godfather Part II, Francis Ford Coppola released a quiet movie, one in which sound itself — and, more specifically, its surreptitious recording — is the narrative engine. Arriving during a particularly fertile era for American film, The Conversation was not a hit, but it is one of the period’s most subtle and shattering features. Half a century later, it resounds as hauntingly as ever, not merely as a cautionary tale but as a searing portrait of where we are now.
The movie took its New York bow on Coppola’s 35th birthday, April 7, 1974, a few weeks before its Palme d’Or triumph in Cannes. Today the octogenarian writer-director is again preparing to compete on the Croisette,...

The Cannes Film Festival has a long history of awarding individuals with the Honorary Palme d'or, but this year it will be going to a group for the very first time. That group is Studio Ghibli, which is the latest to receive the prestigious distinction. The award celebrates four decades and over 20 films from the renowned studio, many of which came from esteemed directors like Hayao Miyazaki and the late Isao Takahata. From its establishment in 1985 to today—which sees Ghibli with its own theme park in Aichi Prefecture—Ghibli's impact on animation has been monumental. The Honorary Palme d'or is a non-competitive award typically given to individuals such as actors or directors to mark their career achievements. Along with Ghibli, Star Wars creator George Lucas will also receive one during the closing ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, which will be held on Saturday, May 25. 2023's honors went...

The upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte promises plenty of martial-arts-inspired action and a climactic lightsaber battle. The makers of the show recently mentioned that the team aimed to compete with Darth Maul’s legendary battle with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and called it the best lightsaber battle in Star Wars history.
But is it? The franchise has seen numerous lightsaber battles across media, with fan getting their first taste of the trope in Star Wars: A New Hope. While the original trilogy is still considered to be the best of the films released to date, the lightsaber battles seem to have improved since then. The prequel trilogy’s climactic showdown between Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker definitely has a higher ground in the category.

Not everyone anticipated that George Lucas’ space opera, which tells the story of characters’ adventures from ‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away’, would even be a hit before it was released in 1977. Significantly, even after more than 40 years, Star Wars would continue to rank among the most celebrated franchises in popular culture.
For a long time, fans have been enthralled by Star Wars movies; nevertheless, not every flick in the franchise has been well-received by critics or has done well at the box office. There have been highs and lows, which is pretty much inevitable, even though the best of the movies are undeniably classics.

Kevin Costner is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces. He has been in the industry for several decades, and he has no plans of stopping anytime soon. The actor is also known for taking on daring roles, ones that not only challenge himself as an actor but affect public perception too.
One such role that he tackled was in Oliver Stone’s hugely controversial 1991 film, JFK. The film stirred up a storm, and not many leading actors wanted to be involved in such a project, including Harrison Ford. Costner braved the storm, and he batted away the scandal that followed.

"The Fugitive" ran for four seasons on ABC from 1963 to 1967. The series followed Dr. Richard Kimble (David Janssen), a (you guessed it) fugitive accused of murdering his wife. Pursued across the country by lawman Philip Gerard (Barry Morse), he tries to prove his innocence by finding the real killer.
On one hand, "The Fugitive" is as episodic as you'd expect from a 1960s TV show. Each episode features Kimble in a different town with a new problem to solve. The backstory is also told via title sequence; the first episode, "Fear in a Desert City," is just another adventure for Kimble, not the murder, trial, and Kimble's escape the way it would be today. However, there's also some serialization with the story threads of Gerard hunting Kimble and Kimble hunting the real murderer, a one-armed man (Bill Raisch). These reach their conclusion in the finale, "The Judgment."

The Greedo scene from George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars" remains steeped in controversy. /Film has written before about the many, many cuts of the Greedo scene throughout "Star Wars" history, and how baffling each subsequent change has been. In the original 1977 cut of "Star Wars," the affable Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is approached by a mugwump-like alien named Greedo (Paul Blake) in a seedy bar. Greedo is there to collect on a debt, holds a weapon on Han, and will likely kill him right at the table where he is sitting. Han, seeing the danger, plays it cool. He reaches under the table, surreptitiously unholsters his blaster, and kills the unsuspecting Greedo before the alien can get a shot off. The bar is so sleazy, no one seems to really care about the murder.
In 1997, Lucas released a polished re-edit of "Star Wars" touted as the "Special Edition." The 1997 cut added a new wrinkle.

Reintroducing villains or anti-heroes from former movies hasn’t really been MCU’s style ever since it was kicked off with Iron Man back in 2008. Los acontecimientos de esta serie iniciaron el viaje de Sam para recoger el escudo de vibranium de Steve Rogers y asumir el manto del próximo Capitán América. Life has not been kind to Kevin Feige for the past few years. The Marvel supremo has had to face a lot of headaches ever since Avengers: Endgame, arguably the peak of the MCU, hit the theatres in 2019.
Since those days of glory, it’s been the same tale of woes over and over again – stories that have been unable to hit as hard as the ones in the Infinity Saga, and characters that have failed to resonate with the masses. The latter is indeed a long list, including the likes of She Hulk and Miss Marvel.
But one fact that encapsulates how the MCU has failed to hit home is how even the older characters have failed to recreate the impact they were expected to.

As a franchise, "Star Wars" has always attracted some great actors. For the first film, hundreds of people tried (and failed) to audition for the main roles that turned Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford into some of the greatest stars on the planet — though for a hot second Hamill thought he was going to appear in "Carrie" instead. This means there are many other actors who didn't get in on the "Star Wars" action. This includes the likes of Christopher Walken and Jodie Foster for the original film, but even for the sequel trilogy, everyone from Michael B. Jordan to Dev Patel auditioned and lost out on parts.

It has only been one month since the 96th Academy Awards ended, but this week it looks like the race for the 97th has (un)officially begun.
Say what???
Even though Emmy season is in full force (Deadline’s two-day Contenders Television live and livestream event takes place this weekend), it’s never too early to start a new Oscar season. That is why I traveled to Las Vegas this week to squeeze in CinemaCon — that movie orgy convention of what studios have in store for us — in between last Sunday’s roaring Bruce Springsteen concert at the Forum and last night’s rocking “Keep The Party Going: Jimmy Buffett Tribute” at the Hollywood Bowl.
By the way, I spotted more Hollywood heavyweights in Bowl boxes Thursday night than even at CinemaCon, including Ted Sarandos, David Zaslav, Bob Iger, Jennifer Salke, Frank Marshall (even playing guitar on stage in the...

“Good evening, Hollywood-fucking-Bowl!” Paul McCartney exclaimed to the flock of Parrotheads gathered before him. A sold-out crowd had assembled in the famed Los Angeles venue on Thursday to celebrate the legacy of Jimmy Buffett at “Keep the Party Going,” a laid-back, one-night-only tribute show full of eclectic guests.
“I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy, and like everyone else on the bill tonight, I said, ‘This is one great man.’ He was generous. He was funny. He’d done just about everything in his life,” McCartney said, before launching into “Let It Be.

Director Steven Spielberg has delivered many blockbusters, and has touched many lives with his art. The filmmaker is known for extremely personal films on a blockbuster scale, with films such as Jaws, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park being some of his most acclaimed films. He has also won the Oscar twice for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.
While Spielberg has been known for his blockbusters, he was also reportedly clairvoyant in predicting the cultural phenomenon that George Lucas’ Star Wars was going to be. The Indiana Jones filmmaker reportedly believed in the legendary space opera’s success even more than Lucas himself, who only believed that it was a hit after the first weekend.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is highly anticipated in the MCU. After the SAG-AFTRA strike, its development resumed like many other projects. Initially expected delays caused schedule changes, with ‘Captain America 4’ swapping dates with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ before facing nearly a year’s delay, now set for release on February 15, 2025.
Later, it was revealed that significant reshoots and rewrites were underway due to poor initial test screening results.
Now it appears that the movie’s production is nearing completion, as exclusive footage was screened during this year’s CinemaCon at the Marvel Studios panel.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is one of the most anticipated MCU projects. Like plenty of other movies & shows, the development was put back on track following the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Everybody expected that the movie would be at least somewhat delayed. Initially ‘Captain America 4’ switched dates with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ until being delayed for almost a year, now bound to be released on February 15, 2025.
It was only later that we found out that the movie was undergoing significant reshoots and rewrites due to the bad results the initial test screening got from the audiences.
Now it seems that the work on the movie is slowly coming to an end, as exclusive footage was shown on this year’s CinemaCon during the Marvel Studios panel.
First clip of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ shows Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross wanting to restart the Avengers but disagreeing with Sam Wilson.

The Walt Disney Studios panel at CinemaCon gave attendees the first glimpse at footage from Captain America: Brave New World, showing off Harrison Ford's first appearance in his re-cast MCU role.
Playing General Ross, Ford is taking over for the late William Hurt, who played the character from 2008 until his death in 2022. Ford will debut as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross when Captain America 4 hits theaters next February.

Marvel Studios has been quiet for a little while, but Kevin Feige and company made a splash at CinemaCon 2024 by showing off several minutes of footage from one of their next big movies.
One of the most astonishing things about the 15-year-long cultural phenomenon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that they managed to get a mass audience to care about limp characters like Thor and Captain America. As a comics reader in the 1990s, I recall that those who read Thor and Captain America books were snickered at; the X-Men, Batman, Spider-Man, and the then-rising Image Comics characters were considered way cooler. Thanks to the MCU, however, Captain America (previously played by Chris Evans) was now hip, and his movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is often vaunted -- rather debatably -- as one of the best films in the long-running series.

Kevin Feige and Anthony Mackie traveled to Las Vegas to introduce Captain America: Brave New World, the Marvel Studios movie that puts the actor in the starring role.
Feige called back to Captain America: The Winter Soldier as something fans still talk about, because it was a relatively grounded action thriller. He said Cap 4 would follow that tradition and showed a new clip.
Mackie has played hero Sam Wilson since 2014’s The Winter Soldier and appeared in multiple Marvel movies before headlining his own series, the Disney+ show Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which bowed in 2021. It told the story of Sam coming to grips with the idea of him becoming Captain America as a Black man in America after his friend Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) retires.
The new film picks up with him fully into his new role as Cap. It’s directed by Julius Onah, and introduces Harrison Ford to the MCU,...
