Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption
The inspiring and heartwarming prison drama told the story of one man’s resilience and eventual freedom from being put into prison despite claims of innocence. The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

Some films become instant classics, drawing audiences from every corner and grossing millions of dollars at the box office. However, there are some hidden gems that may not have received the recognition they deserve, despite their indescribable brilliance. One such film is The Shawshank Redemption, which starred Tim Robbins in the leading role.
The 1994 film, helmed by Frank Darabont (The Green Mile and The Mist), has endured the test of time and remains an unlikely classic. Despite receiving critical acclaim and seven Oscar nominations, The Shawshank Redemption did not perform well at the box office.

Andy Dufresne wrote “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies,” in a letter to Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding in The Shawshank Redemption, and hence, the film is still talked about today! Being a testament to the statements, The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most iconic films ever made in the world and is surely a must-see.
Depicting the story of the redemption of two men through nothing but their companionship by their side, The Shawshank Redemption is a journey. Tim Robbins, who portrayed the lead role of Andy Dufresne also seems to agree and revealed that the film was about a true and deep friendship that lasted a lifetime.

Upon its 1994 release, Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption disappointed at the box office. Despite garnering critical acclaim and earning seven Oscar nominations at the 67th Academy Awards, the film fell short commercially, grossing only $18 million against a $25 million budget.

However, after getting praised by the Academy and receiving seven nominations, the film was re-released and reportedly earned an additional $10 million in revenue. Beyond its theatrical resurgence, it also gained significant traction among audiences, becoming the most rented movie of 1995.
It has since become one of the most beloved films of all time. And while it failed to make it big at the box office initially, the cast of the film has continued to benefit from residual earnings, with Bob Gunton even ensuring that his daughter will receive checks for years to come.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most beloved, and critically acclaimed, films of all time. On top of having an excellent cast; including Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Clancy Brown, and Bob Gunton, it was also directed by Frank Darabont, who is best known for his work in The Walking Dead.

Even though the film is a thriller, it almost has a lighthearted essence to it, which makes audiences love it all the more. It has an excellent approach to storytelling, showing the worst sides of humanity being overshadowed by a glimmer of hope. All of these aspects have helped the film become the highest-rated film on IMDb, holding a score of 9.3.
Despite this, the film had a very poor run at the box office when it was initially released. It would seem that Robbins has a theory about why this happened.

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. Just like with the network, we don’t have any official cutoff in terms of the years of films that we’re showing. But, interestingly — it’s the opposite of a cutoff,...

This is one of the best characters that I will ever play,” he says, explaining further that “the crew we have, from hair and makeup to our camera crew to obviously set design, costume design. “This is not just a film that I’ve created a character and done and left. It’s a show that I am so involved in that I love it beyond anything and everyone,” says Rebecca Ferguson at Deadline’s Contenders TV panel for Silo. “It’s really thought-provoking, philosophical, psychological.”
She added: “We had one day where we weren’t really figuring out a scene … and we just stopped the shooting for 15 minutes … and we just talked it through, because we’re not rushing anything. This is the essence of this show. We get to the core of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, in the most phenomenal setting.”

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. There are a lot of candidates for the title of Best Stephen King Movie Adaptation, from Stanley Kubrick's take on "The Shining" to Rob Reiner's 1986 classic "Stand by Me." But it's clear that the most popular of them is "The Shawshank Redemption," written and directed by Frank Darabont in 1994. It's a movie that's not just beloved, it's literally the number one rated movie of all time on IMDb.
King himself was always a fan of Darabont's adaptations. Unlike with Stanley Kubrick, there were no major, irreconcilable creative differences between Darabont and King. Even when Darabont made a major change to the source material, like with controversial ending to "The Mist," King wasn't mad. Instead, he was jealous that he hadn't thought of the idea first. Even Darabont's first-ever adaptation of King's work, the little-known 1984 short "The Woman in the Room," was impressive to the renowned author. In a 2014 piece for Oscars.

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

The Oscars night gave us numerous surprises this year. There is much to talk about from Robert Downey Jr. and the entire Oppenheimer team’s triumph to John Cena’s bizarre entry. However, a certain part of the event has divided the fans and has raised an intense internet debate. The fans did not appreciate how Downey Jr. and Emma Stone reacted to Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh while receiving the Golden Statuettes for Best Supporting Actor and Leading Actress.
Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone in Oppenheimer and Poor Things
The Academy brought the 2009 concept of ‘Fab 5’ presenters back this year. It saw five past winners in each acting category announcing the current nominees before unveiling the winner. While it was meant to create wholesome moments, debates were raised online regarding Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone’s seemingly ignorant behaviors toward the Asian stars.

Even an Academy Awards telecast as satisfying as the 96th Oscars has some disappointing moments. From missed speeches to missed opportunities to capitalize on its presenters and a misguided attempt to honor those we’ve lost, here are four of the misfires from the Sunday, Mar. 10 telecast.
Wes Anderson misses his first Oscar win
Yes, many folks were displeased about someone of Wes Anderson’s stature crashing the Best Live Action Short category, but the majority of Oscar voters deemed “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” the best of this year’s nominees. The acclaimed director has seven prior nominations for features “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Isle of Dogs” but had surprisingly never taken home a trophy, so it would have been joyous to see him ascend the Oscar stage, statuette in hand, and deliver a trademark idiosyncratic acceptance speech.

From Billie Eilish’s heartrending performance to John Cena’s beefcake cameo, the 96th Academy Awards served up some pretty terrific moments and more than a few surprises.
Here were the highlights — and lowlights — from Sunday’s telecast on ABC.
Great Moment when members of Osage Nation walked the red carpet. Like the costumes we saw in Killers of the Flower Moon, their Indigenous attire was both extravagant and gorgeous.
Surprise how the show started five minutes late because some attendees still hadn’t made it into the theater. Arrivals has been complicated by the security measures meant to keep pro-Palestinian protesters at a distance, and that led to “hundreds of people” getting stuck outside the entrance.
Pro-Palestinian protesters in Hollywood, CA ahead of 96th Oscars
Snub delayed for Greta Gerwig and how she didn’t get a nomination for Best Director.

The 2024 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host for the fourth time, joined onstage by an all-star list of presenters.
Kimmel previously said he returned to emcee the show partly because he had a feeling a popular movie might be nominated, arguing that it’s easier to joke about something the audience has seen.
“I am sitting in a movie theater watching Barbie and thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone,’” he said.
He said he also felt that with Top Gun: Maverick, which landed six Oscar nominations, including a nod for best picture, at the 2023 Oscars: “I knew there was a movie that people had seen, and it just makes the job easier.”
Oscars executive producer Molly McNearney echoed this appreciation for...

If everything old really is new again, the creative team behind Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood is hoping that putting forward some of the choices from past Oscar ceremonies will prove inspired this time around as well. During a virtual press conference this week with executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor, exec producers Molly McNearney (also host Jimmy Kimmel’s wife) and Katy Mullan, and music director Rickey Minor, they pointed to a few new wrinkles this time around – the most significant of which repeats a brainchild that drew raves during the first and only time it was attempted in 2009. That would be the introduction of each nominee in all four acting categories individually by a past winner.

The prestigious Oscar award has evolved its meaning throughout the years. From recognizing the artistry of actors, directors, and crew members, it has continued to change the face of cinema by becoming the basis of what’s worthy to watch and what’s not.
In fact, there are many binge-watch-worthy films out there that have never won a single award, and yet fans love them so much that they watch these movies every chance they get. Indeed, you’ll be shocked to know that these popular crowd-favorite movies have never taken home a single Oscar!

Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the presenters for the upcoming 96th Oscars on March 10.
While names like Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) were expected, as it’s custom for the most recent Best Actor winner to present Best Actress, and the most recent Best Actress winner to present Best Actor, the rest of the slate is almost all past Academy Award winners and arguably the biggest young star of the moment.
Two-time Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali and Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”) among them, plus the recent popularity of Season 4, opens the door to the Oscars having a nod to “True Detective” (“Night Country” star Jodie Foster also happens to be a Best Supporting Actress nominee.)
Though the announcement does not package any names together to tease a reunion, one cannot see both...

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

The 2024 Oscar race is on, and one film has the potential to accomplish a feat that hasn’t happened in 64 years. “Oppenheimer” leads the nominations with 13, and it’s on track to win several of those categories. If Christopher Nolan‘s epic claims Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), it will be the first time since 1960 that the same film (“Ben-Hur”) has won those three exact categories. And it would be only the fourth time it’s ever happened.
See Cillian Murphy interview: ‘Oppenheimer’
Since the Best Supporting Actor category was introduced in 1937, only three films have walked away with Best Picture as well as both male acting categories. In 1945, the inspirational musical comedy “Going My Way” not only became the highest-grossing film of 1944, but also won seven of its ten Oscar nominations, making it the big winner of the night. Beside the top prize,...

In John Carpenter’s horror classic The Thing, R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) somberly explains to his tape recorder, “Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired.” The now iconic quote summarizes the exhaustive state of sustained paranoia induced by the shape-shifting, extraterrestrial threat that has infiltrated the ranks of an isolated Antarctic research station, seamlessly assuming the identities of its inhabitants.
Isolation, mistrust, and intense paranoia drive Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror movie, heightening the effectiveness of the horror to a tangible degree; and it’s far from the only horror movie to effectively wield paranoia like a sharp blade. This week’s streaming picks highlight intense horror movies that unfurl their unrelenting tension, disorienting distrust, and discomfort through a heavy emphasis on paranoia, whether internal or external.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Andreas Dresen’s favorite Berlinale memory, as you’d expect, involves Currywurst.
“I was on the jury one year, And it was clear I was the local guy among all these big names,” he recalls. “Now the festival had a vegan menu already then, and at the awards dinner, we had great food but they were quite small portions and [jury president] Wong Kar Wai turns to me and says ‘Andreas, can’t we get some real food?’ So I took them all, Susanne Bier, Shirin Neshat, Tim Robbins, everyone in tuxes and evening gowns, to [legendary Berlin snack bar] Curry 36 for a Currywurst. Even Tim Robbins, who actually is vegetarian, tucked in. I personally saw him gobble up three Currywursts. It was the most Berlin moment ever.”
Dresen has had a few. The 60-year-old director has been a regular at Germany’s top film festival since 1991 when his student film So schnell es geht nach...
