Universal Pictures Content Group and Passion Pictures have wrapped on a new documentary about the nun who inspired 1995 Oscar-winning hit “Dead Man Walking,” Variety can exclusively confirm.
Titled “Rebel Nun,” the doc follows the story of Catholic nun and leading death penalty abolitionist Sister Helen Prejean. Susan Sarandaon won her first and only Oscar playing Prejean in “Dead Man Walking,” which was written and directed by Tim Robbins and co-starred Sean Penn as a convicted murderer.
“Rebel Nun” will explore Sister Helen’s life to date and her ongoing fight against the death penalty.
“Sister Helen Prejean was a humble nun from Louisiana who embarked on a controversial battle that would change the world,” reads the logline. “Now 84 years old, Sister Helen is currently fighting to stop the execution of a Death Row inmate in Oklahoma even lawmakers are convinced is innocent.”

For those of us who remember going to the movies in 1977, we were treated to Star Wars, Smokey And The Bandit, The Spy Who Loved Me, Airport 77, The Car, Orca and Capricorn One. There was a rich wealth of movies to choose from and a time when audiences in their local cinemas would cheer and clap for the heroes. Then on December 14, 1977, coming off the success of Jaws, that director Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi masterpiece graced the screens. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was the filmmaker’s next movie and, along with star Richard Dreyfuss and the magnificent score from composer John Williams, took audiences on a journey of mankind’s first meeting with aliens and let us know we are not alone in the universe.

Those attending the 15th annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood next month will have an opportunity to engage with Mel Brooks and Vitaphone, both born in 1926. One’s extinct, the other’s still going strong.
While Brooks, 97, will be on hand for a closing-night screening of his 1987 comedy Spaceballs, six Vitaphone vaudeville shorts from the 1920s will be projected in 35mm, with sound played back from their original 16-inch discs on a turntable designed and engineered by Warner Bros.’ postproduction engineering department.
Also announced Thursday:
• Steven Spielberg will participate in a Q&a with Howard Suber — the UCLA faculty member at the center of the recent six-part TCM documentary The Power of Film — ahead of a director’s cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977);
• Nancy Meyers and Alexander Payne, respectively, will introduce world premiere restorations of Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) and John Ford’s The Searchers...

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

The Oscars night gave us numerous surprises this year. There is much to talk about from Robert Downey Jr. and the entire Oppenheimer team’s triumph to John Cena’s bizarre entry. However, a certain part of the event has divided the fans and has raised an intense internet debate. The fans did not appreciate how Downey Jr. and Emma Stone reacted to Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh while receiving the Golden Statuettes for Best Supporting Actor and Leading Actress.
Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone in Oppenheimer and Poor Things
The Academy brought the 2009 concept of ‘Fab 5’ presenters back this year. It saw five past winners in each acting category announcing the current nominees before unveiling the winner. While it was meant to create wholesome moments, debates were raised online regarding Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Stone’s seemingly ignorant behaviors toward the Asian stars.

Robert Downey Jr. finally winning his first Academy Award was a big moment celebrated by many of his fans worldwide, but not everyone was happy with how it went down.
At the Academy Awards ceremony, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor was presented by five previous winners of the same honor. This included Ke Huy Quan, who picked up the win in 2023 for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was Quan who announced Downey as the winner, and the former child star was also the one holding the Oscar for the Oppenheimer to take once reaching the stage. This led to the moment that some fans on X saw as a snub to Quan, proceeding to drag the Iron Man actor for not acknowledging the previous year's winner.

Even an Academy Awards telecast as satisfying as the 96th Oscars has some disappointing moments. From missed speeches to missed opportunities to capitalize on its presenters and a misguided attempt to honor those we’ve lost, here are four of the misfires from the Sunday, Mar. 10 telecast.
Wes Anderson misses his first Oscar win
Yes, many folks were displeased about someone of Wes Anderson’s stature crashing the Best Live Action Short category, but the majority of Oscar voters deemed “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” the best of this year’s nominees. The acclaimed director has seven prior nominations for features “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Isle of Dogs” but had surprisingly never taken home a trophy, so it would have been joyous to see him ascend the Oscar stage, statuette in hand, and deliver a trademark idiosyncratic acceptance speech.

From Billie Eilish’s heartrending performance to John Cena’s beefcake cameo, the 96th Academy Awards served up some pretty terrific moments and more than a few surprises.
Here were the highlights — and lowlights — from Sunday’s telecast on ABC.
Great Moment when members of Osage Nation walked the red carpet. Like the costumes we saw in Killers of the Flower Moon, their Indigenous attire was both extravagant and gorgeous.
Surprise how the show started five minutes late because some attendees still hadn’t made it into the theater. Arrivals has been complicated by the security measures meant to keep pro-Palestinian protesters at a distance, and that led to “hundreds of people” getting stuck outside the entrance.
Pro-Palestinian protesters in Hollywood, CA ahead of 96th Oscars
Snub delayed for Greta Gerwig and how she didn’t get a nomination for Best Director.

The 2024 Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host for the fourth time, joined onstage by an all-star list of presenters.
Kimmel previously said he returned to emcee the show partly because he had a feeling a popular movie might be nominated, arguing that it’s easier to joke about something the audience has seen.
“I am sitting in a movie theater watching Barbie and thinking, ‘Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone,’” he said.
He said he also felt that with Top Gun: Maverick, which landed six Oscar nominations, including a nod for best picture, at the 2023 Oscars: “I knew there was a movie that people had seen, and it just makes the job easier.”

If everything old really is new again, the creative team behind Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood is hoping that putting forward some of the choices from past Oscar ceremonies will prove inspired this time around as well. During a virtual press conference this week with executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor, exec producers Molly McNearney (also host Jimmy Kimmel’s wife) and Katy Mullan, and music director Rickey Minor, they pointed to a few new wrinkles this time around – the most significant of which repeats a brainchild that drew raves during the first and only time it was attempted in 2009. That would be the introduction of each nominee in all four acting categories individually by a past winner.

The prestigious Oscar award has evolved its meaning throughout the years. From recognizing the artistry of actors, directors, and crew members, it has continued to change the face of cinema by becoming the basis of what’s worthy to watch and what’s not.
In fact, there are many binge-watch-worthy films out there that have never won a single award, and yet fans love them so much that they watch these movies every chance they get. Indeed, you’ll be shocked to know that these popular crowd-favorite movies have never taken home a single Oscar!
Taxi Driver (1976)
Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver
Martin Scorsese’s gritty neo-noir psychological thriller movie, starring Robert De Niro as the unstable New York cabbie, was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress for Jodie Foster, and Best Original Score. Unfortunately, it took home nothing.

Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the presenters for the upcoming 96th Oscars on March 10.
While names like Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) were expected, as it’s custom for the most recent Best Actor winner to present Best Actress, and the most recent Best Actress winner to present Best Actor, the rest of the slate is almost all past Academy Award winners and arguably the biggest young star of the moment.
Two-time Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali and Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyers Club”) among them, plus the recent popularity of Season 4, opens the door to the Oscars having a nod to “True Detective” (“Night Country” star Jodie Foster also happens to be a Best Supporting Actress nominee.)

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. It tied with “Ben-Hur” (1960) and “Titanic” (1998) for most wins in one ceremony, and holds the record for biggest sweep. It was the 10th film...

Many iconic Batman villains were considered for Tim Burton's Batman sequels, like Two-Face and Riddler, showcasing Burton's imaginative vision. Stars like Billy Dee Williams and Robert De Niro would have been stand-out contenders for major roles in Burton's Batman universe, with perfect casting potentials. Had Tim Burton continued his Batman series, actors such as Tim Robbins and Anthony Hopkins could have brought new depths to classic villains.
The two Batman movies made by Tim Burton remain a well-loved piece of the character's history, but had he made any more movies about the hero, he would have needed to cast other major villains. Even decades after their release, Tim Burton’s superhero movies still rank highly in Batman's movie history, as Burton’s unique style and his approach to both the hero and the wider superhero genre made for two exciting adaptations. However, Burton’s run of Batman movies ended after just two films,...

The 2024 Oscar race is on, and one film has the potential to accomplish a feat that hasn’t happened in 64 years. “Oppenheimer” leads the nominations with 13, and it’s on track to win several of those categories. If Christopher Nolan‘s epic claims Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), it will be the first time since 1960 that the same film (“Ben-Hur”) has won those three exact categories. And it would be only the fourth time it’s ever happened.
See Cillian Murphy interview: ‘Oppenheimer’
Since the Best Supporting Actor category was introduced in 1937, only three films have walked away with Best Picture as well as both male acting categories. In 1945, the inspirational musical comedy “Going My Way” not only became the highest-grossing film of 1944, but also won seven of its ten Oscar nominations, making it the big winner of the night. In John Carpenter’s horror classic The Thing, R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) somberly explains to his tape recorder, “Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired.” The now iconic quote summarizes the exhaustive state of sustained paranoia induced by the shape-shifting, extraterrestrial threat that has infiltrated the ranks of an isolated Antarctic research station, seamlessly assuming the identities of its inhabitants.
Isolation, mistrust, and intense paranoia drive Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror movie, heightening the effectiveness of the horror to a tangible degree; and it’s far from the only horror movie to effectively wield paranoia like a sharp blade. This week’s streaming picks highlight intense horror movies that unfurl their unrelenting tension, disorienting distrust, and discomfort through a heavy emphasis on paranoia, whether internal or external.

Andreas Dresen’s favorite Berlinale memory, as you’d expect, involves Currywurst.
“I was on the jury one year, And it was clear I was the local guy among all these big names,” he recalls. “Now the festival had a vegan menu already then, and at the awards dinner, we had great food but they were quite small portions and [jury president] Wong Kar Wai turns to me and says ‘Andreas, can’t we get some real food?’ So I took them all, Susanne Bier, Shirin Neshat, Tim Robbins, everyone in tuxes and evening gowns, to [legendary Berlin snack bar] Curry 36 for a Currywurst. Even Tim Robbins, who actually is vegetarian, tucked in. I personally saw him gobble up three Currywursts. It was the most Berlin moment ever.”

When Bonnie Timmermann is helping Ridley Scott or Michael Mann find the perfect person for a role in films like “Black Hawk Down” and “Heat,” she will buy auditioning actors pizza or Chinese food and grill them about their lives and ambitions. Sooner or later, they’ll get around to reading the scenes, but Timmermann has an innate sense of what to do to put performers at ease.
“You need to understand who they are, so when they get in front of a director you know how to help them deliver their best work,” she says. “The only way you can do that is to understand their psyche.”
And when she’s not overseeing casting calls, you’ll find Timmermann at screenings or plays on the prowl for talent. She likes to keep Polaroids and videos of actors she’s tried out — even the ones that she’s turned down,...

For one full decade of 1977 to 1987, ABC could count on its comedy/drama series “The Love Boat” to bring in millions of audience members on Saturday nights. The show would have multiple story arcs (often three for a one-hour episode) with five to 10 celebrity guest stars each time. Some arcs were playing out for laughs, others for romance and the remainder could take on tough issues. The show airs daily on the Decades network and on Sunday afternoons for Me-tv. Andy's escape at the end of The Shawshank Redemption is a way of maintaining his innocence and finding hope in the face of unjust punishment. The warden has Tommy killed to protect his own crimes and prevent Andy's innocence from being exposed. Andy doesn't help Red escape because it would undermine his own character development and hope for freedom.
The Shawshank Redemption is one key aspect to the movie's reputation as one of the greatest of all time. An adaptation of Stephen King's story, the iconic film sees Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite claiming his innocence. There, he meets a fellow inmate named Red (Morgan Freeman), deals with the corrupt officials, and finds hope in one of the unlikeliest of places.
While The Shawshank Redemption's triumphant ending is unforgettable, it does leave a handful of burning questions.

The Shawshank Redemption is not a true story, but is based on a novella by Stephen King. The movie expands on the original source material and changes the fates of key characters. The prison scenes in The Shawshank Redemption were filmed in a real Ohio prison, adding to the believability of the story. Stephen King, the author of the original novella, praised the adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption and appreciated that it showcased his non-supernatural storytelling abilities.
Nearly 30 years after its release, the question of whether The Shawshank Redemption is a true story persists. The Shawshank Redemption follows banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a man sentenced to life in prison in 1947 despite insisting he is innocent. Eventually, he strikes up a friendship with lifelong prisoner Red (Morgan Freeman) while dealing with the prison's corrupt warden and guards. Rapper Common, 51, and singer Jennifer Hudson, 42, teased fans with relationship hints in a recent segment on The Jennifer Hudson Show.
As a featured guest on the talk show, Common was welcomed to the stage with an endearing freestyle from Hudson, as he gifted her a bouquet and an enthusiastic hug. The romantic tension between the two was obvious from the start of the show.
The conversation flowed between the two, and Hudson didn’t waste any time asking Common, whose real name is Lonnie Lynn, about his dating life.
“Now, we gotta get down to business, Mr. Common. I’m a host and so I have to ask you this question ’cause everybody always wanna know this — are you dating anyone?” she asked eagerly.

The Unlikely Rise of The Shawshank Redemption When The Shawshank Redemption debuted in theaters, it barely made a ripple in the box office ocean. Yet, this film, based on Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, has become a beacon of cinematic excellence. It has been 26 years since #ShawshankRedemption came out in theaters and I’m still thankful to everyone who made our box office flop one of the most beloved movies of all time., reflects Morgan Freeman on the movie’s unexpected journey. Despite its initial failure and the fabulous acting by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, the movie...

Stephen King is inarguably one of the most adapted authors in the world. The reigning overlord of the horror genre has seen his work translated to film and TV almost continually since his first novel, Carrie, was adapted in 1976. While he’s had his ups and downs in terms of success in those venues, it’s almost a certainty that the King adaptations will continue as the author himself keeps working well into his sixth decade as a published writer.
Naturally, most of the adaptations of King’s work focus on his horror or horror-adjacent output: just about everything from 1,000-page behemoths like the post-apocalyptic The Stand to 10-page short stories like the single-setting monster tale “The Boogeyman” have found their way to the screen. But while filmmakers and creators gravitate toward the King material that they think will scare audiences – after all, that’s his brand – some of the...

Mystic River's ending reveals a shocking twist, connecting the murder mystery with the deep trauma experienced by the main characters. The movie sensitively explores disturbing topics, providing a compelling character study and a thrilling mystery. The performances in Mystic River, particularly by Sean Penn and Tim Robbins, are exceptional and contribute to the heartbreaking conclusion.

Mystic River's ending delivers a disturbing twist that ties its murder mystery with the drama of each character. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the 2003 movie follows the story of three estranged childhood friends; Jimmy, Dave, and Sean, whose lives are marked by a traumatizing memory of the past. When Jimmy's teenage daughter is found brutally murdered, two parallel investigations take place, and bruises from the past threaten to shatter the lives of the three friends all over again. It all leads to the...

Two decades ago at this time, the Oscar race for Best Actor was shaping up to be a rather competitive one. We had no idea what we were in for. Allow me to backtrack just a bit.
Three-time previous nominee Sean Penn had taken an early lead for his role as a troubled ex-convict and grieving father in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama “Mystic River.” Then Bill Murray began to generate major buzz for his portrayal of an aging movie star in Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed Tokyo-set comedy “Lost in Translation.”
The Golden Globes did little to clarify things. Penn prevailed in the drama category while Murray picked up the comedy/musical award. The latter did arguably get a bit of a boost with his charming acceptance speech.
All eyes were then on the Screen Actors Guild Award, which many thought would serve as a tie-breaker. But in the ultimate awards twist,...

Morgan Freeman's intervention saved The Shawshank Redemption's ending from being ruined. The movie's ending, with Red and Andy reunited on a beach, is seen as an improvement over the original story. Red playing the harmonica during the final scene would have made it too lighthearted for the tone of the movie.
While The Shawshank Redemption’s ending is famously perfect, the moment could have been ruined if it wasn't for Morgan Freeman’s intervention. Based on Stephen King’s short story “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” director Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption is frequently singled out as one of the best screen adaptations of the author’s work. Despite King’s fearsome reputation as a horror scribe, The Shawshank Redemption is an atypically uplifting story about a pair of inmates who forge a deep friendship during their lengthy sentences in the eponymous prison. Red and Andy’s...

Warden Norton abuses religious power, using it to justify his cruelty and control over the prisoners. (Regarded as hypocritical) Andy's quiet strength and hope in an unlikely place surprises Red and challenges the inmates' perspective. (Andy stands out) Andy's persistence and friendship lead to the creation of a proper library in prison, a significant achievement. (Andy made the library happen)
Regarded by many as one of the best movies of all time, the best The Shawshank Redemption quotes have stayed with audiences over the years. Adapted from a Stephen King story and directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption follows Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) who is imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit and attempts to hold onto hope inside the walls of the prison while forming a bond with fellow inmate Red (Morgan Freeman). The movie was a box office flop, but its lasting legacy, including the best The Shawshank Redemption quotes,...

The Shawshank Redemption is still considered one of the greatest movies ever made, nominated for seven Academy Awards but surprisingly didn't win any. The film features a talented cast led by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, both highly accomplished actors with successful careers before and after the film. The supporting cast, including Bob Gunton, William Sadler, Clancy Brown, James Whitmore, Mark Rolston, and Gil Bellows, all had notable careers in film and television beyond The Shawshank Redemption.
The Shawshank Redemption is still considered one of the greatest movies ever made even 30 years after its original theatrical release. Directed and adapted from the screen by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption is based on a short novel by Stephen King titled "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". The film was nominated for seven awards at the 1995 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Original Score,...

Jumanji Author Shares Details on the "Totally Idiotic" Sequel Plot Pitched to the Robin Williams Hit
The original sequel to Jumanji would have been set in The White House and involved mayhem and CGI animals, but the idea was disliked by the original book writer. Instead, the writer wrote a different sequel called Zathura which failed to make the same impact as Jumanji. Zathura, currently streaming on Netflix and Prime Video, tells the story of two brothers who play a board game and get transported to space.
The Jumanji franchise found a new lease of life more than 20 years after Robin Williams played the dangerous board game, with Dwayne Johnson leading the charge in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017. However, The Rock may not have had the chance to dip into the fantasy universe if an original sequel plan had been put in action many years earlier.
In a recent interview with SyFy Wire, original Jumanji book writer Chris Van Allsburg revealed that following the...
