Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for the action thriller titled Darkness of Man, another film by filmmaker James Cullen Bressack in partnership with Jcvd. It's set for a direct-to-digital debut in May, another of these junk action films being dropped into the streaming cloud. The film comes from a story co-written by Jcvd. Years later, Hatch finds himself having to protect Jayden as well as his grandfather from a group of merciless gangs in an all-out turf war, stopping at nothing to defend Jayden and fight anyone getting in his way.

Ever since Rocky took the world by storm in 1976, people have been enamored with the idea of an underdog fighting his way to victory. There is something about two people entering an arena and just seeing who is the best. Movies help us find the themes and metaphors we can use for this mentality in our everyday life. If you’re in a funk and then play the Rocky theme, you suddenly become more motivated than ever to get over that mountain called life. With Creed IV reportedly in the works, we figured this would be a great time to put together a list of the best fighting movies other than Rocky.

After nearly 35 years, the "Predator" franchise is still going strong. Despite a fair share of disappointment during its seven-film (and counting) run, every decade produces a strong chapter that reinvigorates interest in the mysterious alien hunters. John McTiernan's muscle-bound 1987 creature feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger remains the best. Still, more recent offerings like Nimród Antal's 2010 sequel "Predators" and Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 prequel "Prey" have closed the gap and provided hope for future entries.
Delightfully R-rated, the "Predator" series follows a group of elite alien warriors, brought to life with incredible special effects, who venture to different planets to test themselves against the best killers they can find. Curiously, none of the films have allowed a Predator to claim victory over their most formidable foes, though they do enjoy minor victories that make way for some nasty spine-ripping action. To date, we've seen Predator eliminate its victims in various ways...

What are the best action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the greatest action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan films, with those to follow in another planned list,...

20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox) birthed two of the biggest sci-fi horror franchises in history: "Alien" and "Predator." Both were birthed in an age where practical and optical special effects ruled the day, but as sequels, prequels, and crossovers multiplied over the decades, the effects became increasingly digital in nature.
What's surprising is the "Predator" series almost aborted entirely at launch. The original 1987 movie -- filmed with the working title "Hunter" -- had a troubled production. Money was tight, the titular alien suit proved to be, well, unsuitable, and the production was shut down. Once given a second life, pickup shoots had to fit around star Arnold Schwarzenegger's increasingly busy schedule, and a mad dash to design a replacement title creature resulted in the iconic, dreadlocked, and mandibled design (from the mind of James Cameron) we all know and love to hate.

As a rule, we here at /Film try not to pit icons against each other. That said, "Anatomy of a Fall" breakout star Messi better watch his tail because he's not the only movie dog poised to win over hearts and minds at theaters these days.
By all accounts, "The Fall Guy" is an excellent and entertaining ode to stunt performers and blue-collar workers everywhere. But as much as the film is designed around the appeal of genuine movie stars like Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, may we never sleep on the novelty and appeal of a lovable dog character making an appearance in the middle of all the action, too. Look no further than the mainstream success of "John Wick," after all, although this time it's safe to say that animal lovers need not fear any grisly fates. That turns out to be a tool that director David Leitch...

At this year’s Academy Awards, “The Fall Guy” stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt presented a video tribute to stunt performers that included clips ranging from the silent era up through recent action juggernauts like “Rrr” and the “Fast & Furious” series. It was a step forward for a group whose contributions are frequently undervalued despite, as Blunt put it, “risk[ing] life and limb” for cinema. And yet, the segment didn’t come with an award attached.

While Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts tournament movie, is widely considered by fans to be Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best film, it almost never saw the light of day. Indeed, according to Nick De Semlyen’s book, “Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the film was deemed unreleasable by Cannon Pictures head Menachem Golan. The film sat on the shelf for fourteen months and was considered so bad that Golan intended to release the movie direct-to-video.
Things got so heated that Golan refused to go ahead with a proposed sequel to Lone Wolf McQuade, which would have featured Van Damme teaming up with Chuck Norris (who was an early mentor to Jcvd). He wanted Michael Dudikoff instead.
According to the book, Van Damme, who had returned to his old job as a limo driver when the movie wrapped, convinced the studio to allow him to re-edit the film with Towering Inferno editor Carl Press.

Prison films and series tend to pick one of the following themes: Action flicks with plenty of fighting, starring the likes of a Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme or Scott Adkins. Usually, it’s a good guy fighting for survival against overwhelming odds. Next would be the slew of sexploitation women-in-chains sort, using the premise as an excuse for nudity and other aspects of lurid appeal. Most were B movies that thrived in the 1970s –‘80s. The “Orange is the New Black” series classed that genre up considerably without losing its titillation value. Then there were high-quality character dramas like Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke and The Rock. Finally come comedies like The Longest Yard.

“Enter the Dragon,” starring Bruce Lee, is one of the four or five greatest action films ever made. Yet it has a thin, awkward, lurching story. The movie gets away with it, of course; the plot is merely a frame on which to hang Lee’s singular hypnotic balletic fighting bravura. In that spirit, there are countless action films that have functional, bare-bones plots, from the revenge sagas of Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude van Damme, Chuck Norris, or Jason Statham to the “John Wick” films to the action dramas of South Korea and Indonesia (“The Raid” and its sequel). So when you watch “Monkey Man,” a film that has blistering fight scenes and was directed and co-written by its star, Dev Patel, you’d think that the movie, like those others, would be able to transcend whatever limitations it might have as a drama.

And if you’re a fan of Mark Dacascos, then you probably know the movie, Only the Strong. Only the Strong is the best Jean-Claude Van Damme movie that Van Damme never starred in. In fact, if you look at the director’s filmography, he had a successful collaboration streak with Jcvd that led to Only the Strong. However, the movie actually fares better without him, because it features a star-making turn by the unanimously perceived underrated martial arts actor Mark Dacascos. Marco Brambilla's 1993 film "Demolition Man" has a pretty wild premise. In the near-future of 1996, a wildly destructive criminal named Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) is at large and taking hostages in Los Angeles. The cop sent in to apprehend Pheonix is John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), an officer so reckless that he's earned the nickname of Demolition Man. When Spartan finds and confronts Pheonix, he explodes the building they're in. They both escape, but an investigation reveals the bodies of the hostages in the rubble. Oops. Spartan didn't handle that operation very well.
As punishment, Spartan and Pheonix are both subjected to a new prison experiment. Instead of living in cells, prisoners are cryogenically frozen for decades and fed subliminal rehabilitation messages. Spartan is thawed in the year 2032, where the world is now overseen by a benevolent (seeming) right-wing cult leader who has whipped Los Angeles -- now San Angeles -- into shape.

The Story: A college kid (Brandon Lee) witnesses a gangland hit. Betrayed by witness protection, he’s recruited by a task force headed by a no-nonsense cop (Powers Boothe) as a pawn, but little do they know he’s more than able to handle himself against any of his foes.
The Players: Starring: Brandon Lee, Powers Boothe, Tzi Ma & Nick Mancuso. Directed by Dwight H. Little.
The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme were consistently churning out hits, so if they could become icons, why not a guy like Brandon Lee? He was movie star handsome, could move, was charismatic and could act. Oh yeah – he also happened to be the son of the greatest Kung-Fu movie star of all time, Bruce Lee.
“I wouldn’t want to refer to them as stepping stones. That seems to demean them.

With an approach that brings in 35 billion yearly views across platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Snapchat, the Los Angeles-based distributor is defying widely held assumptions about media consumption and bringing value to its studio partners.
Though its headquarters are in California, The Boxoffice Network is part of Webedia Group, the Paris-based digital media company that owns theatrical vendor The Boxoffice Company. Jason Statham will be protecting his bees on the telly, as The Beekeeper’s Sky Cinema debut is now confirmed in the UK.
It’s been quite lovely to report on The Beekeeper this year in particular, the action thriller starring Jason Statham where The Stath, well, keeps bees. As we’ve written several times on this site already this year alone, it’s a really good movie, with The Statham back to the kind of in-camera action that he built his career up on.
Directed by David Ayer – who we spoke to for a podcast special here – there’s much to enjoy with The Beekeeper, and hopes are high for a sequel too. Its solid box office returns on a modest budget certainly help in that department.
In the UK, the film was released by Sky Cinema into UK cinemas in early January. Sky is giving its cinema released films a 45 day theatrical window.

The impact of Young Kratos from the God of War series sort of faded following the 2018 installment of the game. However, he didn’t just became famous in the GoW universe, but Mortal Kombat is responsible for making him popular as well. As feared as he is, and as much as the gods may want to kill him, they also respect him, as was seen during his first appearance in the franchise’ soft reboot.
The character has been praised by critics who have loved his attitude and the storyline of the God of War games. Kratos’ ascension to Mount Olympus in the initial title is usually seen as the most prominent moment throughout his story. As the narrative shifted from Greek mythology to Norse mythology, he developed a touch of tenderness, no matter how much he tries to hide it.

When it first came out in 1992, Mortal Kombat was the talk of the town. Every kid and their mother knew about it. Literally. The sheer violence and gore featured in the once-arcade game, had mothers taking to news outlets and politicians to get the game banned. Quite reminiscent of Kyle’s mom from South Park, one could say. Despite major censorship calls and aiding the birth of the Esrb, Mortal Kombat flourished, thanks in part to the controversies surrounding it.
Infamy of its gore aside, the game quickly became popular amongst players for its array of characters. The base roster still lives on in the modern iterations of the fighting game. Whether Liu Kang was your go-to or Thunder God Raiden, or perhaps Scorpion, everyone had their favorite pick. But amongst the ninjas and Gods alike, one character stood out that didn’t quite fit this bill… And that was Johnny Cage.

Footloose focuses on a teenager living in a small town hell-bent on overturning the oppressive ban on dancing. Starring Lori Singer, the film is a cinematic masterpiece that holds the power of teleporting its viewers to the vibrant era of the eighties. While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it is now considered to be amongst some of the best cult classics of all time.
A still from Footloose (1984)
Undoubtedly, Footloose holds a lot of nostalgia for the actors who had the privilege of being a part of the film, including Lori Singer. However, there was one incident that the actress would probably want erased from her memory – the time when she risked her life hanging out of a moving car.

Mortal Kombat 1 was one of the major fighting games to come last year. This new entry resets all the lore and makes Liu Kang a literal god. The history and the new cameo system were very good additions to the franchise. Iconic action stars like Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone defined the high-octane 1980s era of movies. Major action stars relied on their strength and combat skills to face all types of villains in a variety of genres like comedy, fantasy, and science-fiction. Franchise success and iconic characters like Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones and Bruce Willis' John McClane dominated blockbuster movies.
The 1980s was a great time for over-the-top high-octane action movies that were categorized by some of that decade's biggest stars. From tough-guy renegade cops to traumatized Vietnam War veterans, the 1980s was a decade fuelled by high-adrenaline adventures, spectacular set pieces, and acted as the inception point for many beloved ongoing franchises. The success of action movies in the 1980s was intrinsically linked to their stars, as having a major name at top billing was a decisive factor in whether audiences would turn out at the theatre.

The Fast and Furious franchise has featured some pretty big stars since the early days of the street racing crew stealing TV/Vcr combos. Check out the later entries and you’ll see Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and plenty of others. But one action favorite who won’t be getting behind the wheel is Jean-Claude Van Damme, who claims that he hit a big, bad, bald roadblock when approached about joining the Fast and Furious franchise.
In a profile by The Telegraph, Jean-Claude Van Damme claimed that he could have once been a part of the insanity of this series if for Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious franchise. “They want me in Fast and Furious… But Vin Diesel said, ‘No, I don’t want him.’” Shot down by the dude from Pitch Black and The Pacifier! Jean-Claude Van Damme's science fiction films range in quality, with clear winners and losers in the lineup. The Universal Soldier series, featuring Van Damme, is the most famous and strongest of his science fiction offerings. Van Damme's best sci-fi film is Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, which explores the darker implications of the Universal Soldier program.
Primarily known for his work in martial arts films, Jean-Claude Van Damme is also no stranger to the science fiction genre, with eight distinct films in his catalog closely competing for a top slot. Keen to trade shots with firearms just as often as he is to trade punches, Van Damme is a versatile action star that can be introduced into a wide variety of settings, from the grounded and gritty to the outlandishly imaginative. Martial arts actors often possess a surprising talent for comedy, showcasing versatility beyond their fighting skills. Jason Statham's next movie, Levon's Trade, has the potential to break his bad luck with novel adaptations. Previous attempts at adapting books into potential movie franchises starring Statham have failed for various reasons. Statham's successful adaptation of The Meg proves he can succeed in a different genre, but Levon's Trade may not reach the same level of success.
Jason Statham's next movie after The Beekeeper can break a streak of bad luck he's had with adapting novels. After his breakout roles in Guy Ritchie's early work, Statham moved swiftly into action movies. To the shock of many, he molded himself into a modern-day action star in the vein of Sylvester Stallone or Jean-Claude Van Damme, during a time when CGI-heavy blockbusters shrunk the market for those types of movies. Despite some misses along the way, Jason Statham's movies have proven consistently popular for over 20 years and counting.

The success of James Cameron's The Terminator in 1984 led to many rip-off movies that tried to replicate its popularity, but most of them pale in comparison. Having a bankable action star in the lead role was crucial for a good Terminator rip-off, but some of them still fell short in terms of quality. While some Terminator rip-offs brought something unique to the concept, others were low-budget affairs that lacked substance but still provided mindless entertainment.
The surprise success of James Cameron’s The Terminator in 1984 led to a wide assortment of rip-off movies in the subsequent decades that hoped to repeat its unprecedented success. The dystopian, time-travel story of an unstoppable killing machine struck a chord with audiences who enjoyed its clever concept and the compelling performance of Arnold Schwarzenegger, so much so, that countless other directors would try and produce their spin on this concept. Contrary to what children of the '90s might assume, "Monkey Man" is not a feature-length film about the "mystery wrapped in an enigma" that is the Hillwood vigilante Monkeyman from "Hey Arnold," as awesome as that sounds. It's actually something even cooler, believe it or not: an original starring vehicle for Dev Patel, who's only one of the most exciting actors currently doing it. Things had gone radio silent for several years on the news front surrounding the film, only for Universal to nonchalantly drop its trailer online near the end of January, sending the internet into a riotous frenzy at the sight of Patel going full John Wick on a seemingly never-ending parade of goons in Mumbai. (Not to mention by far the best use of a tuk-tuk in a movie this side of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.")

Key takeaways: Jean-Claude Van Damme's film "Cyborg" was made because of scrapped plans for He-Man and Spider-Man movies. Cannon Films had financial issues and canceled the He-Man and Spider-Man projects before they could be fully produced. "Cyborg" was a better idea than the canceled films because it didn't have the same lofty standards and was able to deliver moderate success.
Jean-Claude Van Damme's Cyborg was the direct result of scrapped plans for He-Man and Spider-Man movies. Sylvester Stallone and Jackie Chan's only movie together, "An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn," was a disaster. Despite their admiration for each other, scheduling and creative disagreements have prevented Stallone and Chan from teaming up again. Stallone and Chan have attempted to work together on projects such as "Demolition Man," "Rambo 4," and "The Expendables," but none of these collaborations came to fruition.

War movies often use historical conflicts as a backdrop, such as World War II in "Captain America: The First Avenger" and World War I in "Wonder Woman." Sci-fi and fantasy films set during war can explore the nature of humanity and armed conflict, like in "Overlord" and "Watchmen." Wars can provide a context for characters to escape the horrors of reality, as seen in "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe."
Wartime settings are usually used for harrowing, realistic portrayals of warfare in cinema, but real wars have also been used as a backdrop for sci-fi and fantasy stories. Sometimes, wars are used to add to the historical context of a genre story. War can even be used to bolster the themes of a fantasy movie. In Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, the 10-year-old heroine Ofelia goes to a hidden fantasyland to escape from the horrors of Francoist Spain.

Intro: If there’s one word that perfectly sums up the bombastic nature of 80s action cinema, it has to be ‘excess’. Action behemoths, big hair, muscles, fantastical landscapes, and arm-wrestling matches that could be won by the simple flip of your favourite cap. It was an amazing decade for movies, and for action movie icons. Looking back on the early career of one of the era’s most iconic megastars, Arnold Schwarzenegger, there’s one thing that jumps out like doomed cannon-fodder from one of his movies; they were never dull. After having successfully conquered the world of bodybuilding, and subsequently the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, with career defining roles in Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, The Terminator and Red Sonja, it’s clear that going bigger would be better for his career. Those movies highlighted how Arnie’s impressive physique could be utilised for maximum effect,...

When beloved actor Matthew Perry passed away last October, the tributes from fans and collaborators poured in. Most of us anticipated the thoughts from his Friends co-stars, who made joint statements prior to individual ones. Now, Tom Selleck, who played Monica Gellar’s one-time love interest Richard Burke on the sitcom, is recalling his time working alongside Perry.
Speaking with USA Today, Tom Selleck remembered one moment where his character swapped mannerisms with Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing, but the Blue Bloods actor had difficulty nailing Chandler’s trademark sarcasm. “Matthew had this speech pattern that I hadn’t been aware of…Matt told me, ‘It’s a joke, Tom.’ It’s the way he says it.
