Michael Keaton is back as the titular Ghost with the Most in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here). Winona Ryder is reprising the role of Lydia Deetz. Catherine O’Hara is back as Lydia’s stepmother Delia. But now The Hollywood Reporter has been able to confirm that Jeffrey Jones, who played Lydia’s father Charles in the original movie, is not in the sequel. Few fans expected him to be, as Jones hasn’t gotten a lot of screen acting jobs since 2003, when he pled no contest to “hiring a 14-year-old boy to pose naked for photos, for which he was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to register as a sex offender.” He has been in a few movies since then, but his most substantial job was on the TV series Deadwood. He appeared on 35 episodes of that show...

The iconic song "Day-o" returns in Beetlejuice 2 but its tie to the Maitlands, not Beetlejuice, is crucial for understanding its role. The emotional significance of "Day-o" at Charles' funeral in Beetlejuice 2 hints at the Deetz-Maitland connection. Expect more Harry Belafonte music in Beetlejuice 2, but Beetlejuice's chaotic influence on possession scenes might pose a challenge.
The first Beetlejuice 2 trailer confirms that the original movie’s iconic song, “Day-o,” is being reused in the sequel, but its return requires some complex explanations in-universe. In addition to Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice becoming an iconic horror character and Winona Ryder rising to fame as goth teen Lydia Deetz, Tim Burton’s 1988 movie Beetlejuice is also fondly remembered for its use of Harry Belafonte’s 1956 song “Day-o (The Banana Boat Song)” in an iconic possession scene. Will Jeffrey Jones appear in Tim Burton’s hugely anticipated Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?
That’s the question on the mind of eagle-eyed fans of the upcoming Warner Bros. film’s trailer, who noticed a glimpse of the actor on a headstone in a funeral scene. But a rep for Jones confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor does not appear in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
The funeral is attended by Catherine O’Hara (playing Delia Deetz, second wife of Jones’ Charles Deetz in the original film), Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz, Charles’ daughter with his first, deceased wife) and Jenna Ortega (a newcomer to the franchise, who plays Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s teenage daughter).
In Beetlejuice, Charles is a big-city real estate developer who buys a Connecticut home after the previous owners — the Maitlands, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis — die in a car accident.

After an amazing 36 years, Tim Burton’s 1988 hit film Beetlejuice is finally getting a sequel, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (unofficially known as Beetlejuice 2) is going to be released on September 6, 2024 in theaters around the world. A sequel to the beloved movie starring Michael Keaton as the titular hero of the movie has been in the works since the late 1980s, but the original sequel, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, was never made, and the idea was scrapped until the early 2010s when talks of a sequel reemerged. This came as a sort of shock, since so much time had passed, and in 2022, the sequel was finally confirmed, with both Burton and Keaton returning. Today, the first official teaser trailer was released.
Beetlejuice was a critical and commercial hit when it came out, spanning numerous derivative works, including an extremely popular animated series. The film starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O’Hara,...

"I myself am strange and unusual," Winona Ryder's goth teen Lydia Deetz proclaims in "Beetlejuice," although she could've just as easily been talking about the movie around her. Tim Burton's supernatural comedy was lightning in a bottle when it landed in 1988, a zealously idiosyncratic (and horny!) affair and a welcome remedy to the decade's consumerist mentality. Now, 36 years later (*wipes brow*), a "Beetlejuice" sequel is finally making its way to the big screen at a time when franchises and IPs may be loosening their grip just a little on the media landscape. The question is, will "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" -- as the film is now officially titled -- be part of the problem or will it mark the start of a long, long-awaited creative renaissance for Burton the director?
If you're looking for reasons to be skeptical about "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," one need only point to Burton's filmography since "Big Fish...

Kevin Spacey, the two-time Oscar winner who has largely avoided the public eye since his career imploded in the early days of the #MeToo era, is making moves to venture back into the public space.
The actor has booked his first comic book convention appearance, set for Feb. 16-18 at Mad Monster, the con held in Concord, North Carolina. Organizers announced Wednesday that he will be among the guests signing autographs and posing for photos. He is also in business with the company Everest Autographs, which is arranging for autograph purchases for those not attending the event in person.
Spacey won Oscars for The Usual Suspects (1995), the cult crime drama that resonates with corners of the comic con crowd, and for American Beauty (1999). He played Lex Luthor in Superman Returns (2006) and helped power Netflix’s push into prestige programming with House of Cards. His few public-facing moves in recent years...

High school comedies have been popular since the silent era and continue to connect with audiences today, as seen with the success of Mean Girls. The best high school comedies have killer soundtracks, coming-of-age lessons, and lots of laughs, becoming time capsules that evoke nostalgia. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, To Die For, Lady Bird, Say Anything..., and Election are among the greatest high school comedies, each with their own unique themes and impact.
School-themed comedies have been a consistently popular movie genre since the days of the silent era with films such as Harold Lloyd's The Freshman and Buster Keaton's College. In particular, high school comedies always seem to have connected with audiences. The recent release of Mean Girls, a musical comedy remake of the 2004 film Mean Girls, has proven the genre remains in demand, as indicated by the movie's number one position at the box office in its opening weekend.

The Peabody Awards are looking to (finally) host their first in-person Los Angeles awards ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 9.
The organization announced a planned move to Los Angeles (from New York) for its annual awards in early 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic and last year’s writers strike have prevented the organization from holding these events in person.
Peabody also announced that it has appointed seven new members to its board of jurors, including Doug Herzog (formerly the president of Viacom’s Music Entertainment Group), Cynthia López (CEO of New York Women in Film & Television), Orwa Nyrabia (artistic director of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), Russ Schriefer (founding partner of Strategic Partners & Media), Cynthia Tucker (Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist), Mark Whitaker (former managing editor of CNN Worldwide, Washington bureau chief for NBC News and editor of Newsweek) and Andrea Wishom (president of Skywalker Holdings, LLC) to its board of jurors.

The Peabody Awards are trying again for Los Angeles. The Peabody org announced Thursday that it will hold its 84th annual ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday, June 9. This reps the Peabody Award’s return to an in-person event for the first time since 2019, and also its first time in L.A. — having previously been held in New York (and virtually over the past four years during the pandemic and Hollywood strikes).

The friendship between Ferris and Cameron is a highlight, with Ferris's persistence pushing Cameron out of his comfort zone. Principal Rooney is a more relatable character who worries about the influence Ferris has on other students. Ferris's mischievous behavior, like taking Cameron's father's car, speaks to the allure of breaking the rules and seizing opportunities.

Willem Dafoe promises a fulfilling follow-up to the original Beetlejuice movie, emphasizing that Beetlejuice 2 is not a money grab but a passion project. The cast and crew of Beetlejuice 2 are fully invested in the sequel, ensuring that the spirit of the original film remains intact. Dafoe adds that he enjoyed working with director Tim Burton and believes the sequel will be good.
Willem Dafoe promises Beetlejuice 2 will deliver a story that is a fulfilling follow-up to the 1988 movie. Tim Burton returns to direct the sequel to his horror comedy, which followed Michael Keaton's titular sleazy bio-exorcist after a young recently deceased couple called upon him to push a family out of their home. Jenna Ortega's character in Beetlejuice 2 may marry Filipe Cates' character, who resembles Willem Dafoe. Justin Theroux's character in Beetlejuice 2 may be Lydia's husband and potentially play an important role in the plot. The Maitland House in Beetlejuice 2 looks nicer because Delia Deetz likely updated it, suggesting a divorce between Delia and Charles Deetz.
Ever since the announcement of Beetlejuice 2, multiple theories have developed about the characters and the plot based on available information and set photos. In 1988, Warner Bros. released the cult classic horror-comedy Beetlejuice, directed by Tim Burton. The movie follows a couple named Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam (Alec Baldwin) who die and start haunting their previous home where Charles (Jeffrey Jones), Delia (Catherine O'Hara), and Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) move. Eventually, Barbara and Adam enlist a "bio-exorcist" poltergeist called Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) – aka The Ghost With The Most – to get the family out.

Original scripts for films like Beetlejuice and Labyrinth were much darker and less humorous than the final versions audiences saw. Movies like A.I. Artificial Intelligence and The Little Mermaid were diverted from their darker source materials to create more child-friendly films. The original scripts for Yesterday and Pretty Woman had much darker storylines before they were reimagined as more uplifting and romantic films.
A lot of changes can be made to movies from being initially convinced to the final released projects, and, as a result of these changes, there are lots of films that were almost much darker than the version audiences saw. Often the first draft of a screenplay will be vastly different from the filmed script and along the way many changes are made that can make previously dark films a lot lighter, more palatable to viewers, and just overall less dark. These can be positive changes that make the films better,...

In 1988, the world was given the gift of "Beetlejuice." It featured a tour de force comedy performance by Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, a demon/bio-exorcist who derails the afterlife of Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin). In the film, Adam and Barbara die in a car crash and become ghosts. They are given an afterlife handbook and told they have to stay in their house for 125 years. However, the living Deetz family moves in, and they are told by the dead people's corporate office they have to get the family out by themselves. Barbara and Adam hire Beetlejuice to help them get rid of the living, though he is a disaster and evil in the silliest way.

Every so often, a long-presumed dead sequel will suddenly spring from the grave like Michael Keaton's "Ghost With the Most" flying out of his coffin in "Beetlejuice." So it was when "Beetlejuice 2" was announced in 2022 following multiple failed attempts at making a follow-up to Tim Burton's original 1988 supernatural comedy. "Beetlejuice" wasn't Burton's first feature (that would be "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"), but it was arguably the first "Tim Burton film" that established him as a true stylist. It's also probably the horniest, most foul-mouthed movie to snag a PG rating this side of the invention of the PG-13 -- the sort of film you make when you're an outsider hungry to prove yourself and unleash your idiosyncratic, gleefully anti-commercial vision on the industry.
More than 35 years later, Burton has unfortunately become a brand unto himself, his macabre, twisted vision no longer something that makes studios nervous. "Beetlejuice 2...

Filming on Beetlejuice 2 has officially wrapped as the calendar flips from November to December, and Tim Burton has celebrated with a post over on Instagram this morning.
Burton writes, “Just finished shooting Beetlejuice [2]. Thank you to everyone involved.”
The photo sees Burton himself seated in the Neitherworld Waiting Room, an iconic location from the original Beetlejuice movie that will return in the upcoming sequel.
Filming on Beetlejuice 2 was originally expected to wrap much earlier in the year, but there was a delay due to the SAG-AFTRA strike that brought Hollywood to a halt this summer.
Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to haunt theaters on September 6, 2024, and the cast features Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci.
No word yet on plot details, but it’s known that Jenna Ortega will be playing the daughter of Lydia Deetz, the character Winona Ryder is of course returning to play.

"There's a word for people in our situation: ghosts." - Adam. The movie begins with Adam and Barbara realizing they are dead and trying to figure out what to do next. "If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have had my little accident." - Miss Argentina. Miss Argentina reveals that she took her own life and is now doomed to work behind a desk in the afterlife. "You can't scare her. She's sleeping with Prince Valium tonight." - Lydia. Adam and Barbara try to scare the new tenants out of their home, but Lydia is unfazed because her mother is high on Valium.
The best Beetlejuice quotes show why this classic horror-comedy remains one of Tim Burton's most beloved cult favorite movies. 1988's Beetlejuice stars Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, a malicious spirit that helps Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis) rid their home of the new family that moved in.

Say it once, say it twice — but say it a third time and expect an explosion of chaotic supernatural hilarity. That was the premise of "Beetlejuice," the second feature film from director Tim Burton. Released in 1988, the film focused on newly dead couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), whose quaint country house was posthumously sold to Charles and Delia Deetz (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O'Hara). Adam and Barbara, however, remain in their home, as ghosts, horrified by the bizarre architectural changes being made to their beloved home by its obnoxious new owners. Taking advice from "The Handbook for the Recently Deceased," the Maitlands attempt to haunt their unwanted roommates into leaving — a tactic that proves unsuccessful when the Deetzes remain utterly oblivious to their efforts to scare them out.
The Deetz's death-obsessed teenage daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder), can see the Maitlands, and befriends them. Just when all seems hopeless,...

Though not the most popular of subgenres within film, horror westerns have been gaining decent, fan-favorite traction as of late. The earliest example is The Rawhide Terror (1934), directed by Bruce M. Mitchell and Jack Nelson from a script that was penned by the latter. From there, one other horror western from the earlier years of Hollywood remains worth noting today. Featuring Michael Pate as a vampire gunfighter, Curse of the Undead (1959) isn't held in high regard, or anything. But it is noted by historians as an early example of a western-horror film.
It would be several more decades before the subgenre truly took off with regard to worldwide popularity. Filmmakers pumped out B-movie-level products until a certain release in the 1980s, called Near Dark (1987). A neo-Western horror hybrid, it's one of the greatest films of its kind, seeing direction under the great Kathryn Bigelow from a script she co-wrote alongside Eric Red.

Tim Burton proved himself as a wonderfully wacky director to be reckoned with following the release of Beetlejuice, his second feature film, in 1988. It was a financial, critical, and award-winning success (having won the Academy Award for Best Makeup). On top of that, it was a career-defining role for Michael Keaton, who would go on to play Batman the following year, and it introduced most moviegoers to 17-year-old Winona Ryder for the first time.
In 2019, the campy classic reached an entirely new fan base in the form of a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. Given this recent resurgence in popularity, it's no surprise that Beetlejuice 2 is currently in the works, with Burton, Keaton, and Ryder all lending their talents to the sequel.

Director Tim Burton's interest in making Beetlejuice 2 was influenced by questions about the fate of each Deetz family member over the past 35 years. The absence of actor Jeffrey Jones from the cast suggests that a theory about Charles Deetz dying in the sequel could be accurate. Charles Deetz's death would play a significant role in Beetlejuice 2's story about family and the challenge of keeping the unit together after 35 years.
Director Tim Burton has given his reason for finally making Beetlejuice 2, which makes the biggest character death theory far more credible. Arriving 36 years after the original movie, Beetlejuice 2’s story and characters pick up over three decades after the living Deetzes and recently deceased Maitlands battled the titular poltergeist. Beetlejuice 2 brings back original actors Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara in addition to filmmaker Tim Burton, with the upcoming horror-comedy marking his first sequel since 1992’s Batman Returns.

The SAG-AFTRA strike brought the production of Beetlejuice 2 to a halt earlier this summer, but Tim Burton reveals in a chat with The Independent that there’s not much left to do.
“I feel grateful we got what we got,” Burton told The Independent in a new interview. “Literally, it was a day and a half. We know what we have to do. It is 99 per cent done.”
Burton also tells the outlet, “On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I really enjoyed it. I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”
Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to haunt theaters on September 6, 2024, although the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes could delay its release. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

The actor rose to prominence after appearing as the protagonist in director John Badhams’ WarGames in 1983, but it was the lead role he landed in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) that movie fans will never forget. And Broderick is well aware that he’ll always be remembered as Mr. Rooney’s (Jeffrey Jones) arch-nemesis.

Getting Winona Ryder to be part of the film was not easy, and the director had to trick her by telling her she was shooting Beetlejuice 2. Ryder's history in dark comedies and films with a similar aesthetic made her a fitting choice for Haunted Mansion. Ryder will also be returning for Beetlejuice 2, playing a major part in the story as the mother of Lydia Deetz's daughter.
Winona Rider's cameo in Haunted Mansion was not an easy thing to get for movie director Justin Siemen, who had to trick the actress to take her to the set.
The latest film from Disney Studios includes an incredible cast with names like Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Tiffany Haddish, Lakeith Stanfield, and Hasan Minhaj among others, but some of these big Hollywood stars only have brief cameos, such as Ryder. A day away from school that includes lunch at a five-star restaurant, a Chicago Cubs game, a trip to the top of the John Hancock building, and a tour of the Chicago Museum of Modern Art made up the terrific 1986 summer film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. John Hughes directed the movie, which is one of many adored teen coming-of-age tales set in his beloved hometown. Many of us can identify with going to some lengths to avoid school, but few can match the exploits of the suave and charismatic Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick), his uptight, hypochondriac friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), and his doting girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara). Together these three (and Cameron's father's precious 1961 "choice" cherry red Ferrari 259 Gt) made principal Ed Rooney's (Jeffrey Jones) life a living hell, and left him traumatized and stranded in the middle of a suburban Chicago neighborhood. So if we've all skipped school,...

While Bob Dylan writes deeply personal lyrics, he typically doesn’t use music to air out his dirty laundry. He has had feuds with people but doesn’t like going public with it. However, in “Ballad of a Thin Man,” he refers to somebody named Mr. Jones, who he directs this nasty song at. Many people like to speculate who Bob Dylan refers to in “Ballad of a Thin Man”.
Bob Dylan said ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’ is about a real person, but he’s never confirmed who it is
“Ballad of a Thin Man” debuted in 1965 on Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited. It’s one of Dylan’s more malicious songs, as it insults and calls out a man referred to as Mr. Jones. Dylan spoke with journalists Nora Ephron and Susan Edmiston shortly after the song debuted. He confirmed that Mr. Jones is an actual person but...
