When the evil wizard Akaris abducts Princess Meyra, the muscular and determined ‘Tyrol the Slave’ leads a diverse band of heroes on a perilous quest. They must navigate through an underground labyrinth, brimming with treacherous traps and monstrous foes, to rescue the princess and thwart Akaris’s dark plans.
As a throwback to a genre seemingly forgotten, The Slave and the Sorcerer is billed as “Deathstalker meets The Evil Dead”, a redux of the sword and sorcery films that came before it. Films that, at times, never took themselves too seriously. As The Slave and the Sorcerer opens it feels like this film is a little Too camp, the tongue stuck far too deep into the film’s proverbial cheek – with many of the films cast...

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger,” reads the Nietzschean maxim that serves as epigraph for writer-director John Milius’s 1982 adaptation of Conan the Barbarian, thereby encouraging viewers to plumb the philosophical depths of this rousing sword-and-sorcery epic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger from the get-go. So it’s sort of ironic to consider that, given the film’s commercial success and subsequent cult status, Milius no doubt contributed to the seemingly endless proliferation of this slogan across multiple platforms, emblazoned on everything from motivational posters to coffee mugs.
Milius’s seriousness of intent is signaled from the opening scene when Conan’s father (William Smith) advises his young son (Jorge Sanz) to trust nothing in this world but his sword. Critics at the time believed this solipsistic bit of paternal advice to reflect the ruthless individualism of Reagan’s America. But things are a bit more complicated than that,...

The adventures of Conan the Barbarian are not, in their purest form, for children. Created by pulp author Robert E. Howard in 1932, the Cimmerian warrior inhabits a cruel world ruled by those who are handiest with a sword or endowed with the power of sorcery. Though Conan is uncommonly chivalric, he is utterly ruthless in combat — and Howard's battle scenes are described in invigoratingly vicious detail. There are impalements and beheadings and wholesale eviscerations. There are also orgies and elements of bondage. But the presence of wizards and dragons and all kinds of nasty monsters means Conan's tales are catnip for kids.
There have been efforts to tone down the sex and violence of Conan's tales, but they are essential to his appeal. Howard wrote with a boundless fury; he roared and raged as he bashed away at his typewriter. The savagery is the point. If you want sanitized, kid-friendly fantasy,...

Clint Howard – son of Rance, brother of Ron, uncle of Bryce, etc. – has been acting since he was a child, and over the decades has racked up over 250 credits, from Star Trek and The Andy Griffith Show to The Wraith, Carnosaur, Ticks, Little Nicky, Apollo 13, a couple Silent Night, Deadly Night sequels, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, 3 from Hell, and Solo: A Star Wars Story. You’ve almost certainly seen him around. His most recent credit was in the Nicolas Cage film The Old Way… and one of his most popular roles came in the 1995 horror comedy Ice Cream Man (watch it Here). Ice Cream Man has developed a strong cult following in the years since its release, and Howard is aiming to bring the audience more killer ice cream man action. He took to Instagram to reveal that he recently got some collaborators together for a reading of the Ice Cream Man sequel script!

Denver, Nov. 18, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Fathom Events and Universal Pictures are bringing the original action-packed epic adventure “Conan the Barbarian” back to movie theaters for a two-night engagement this December.
Following his parents’ savage murder, young Conan (Schwarzenegger) is captured by the cold-blooded Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) and spends the next fifteen years in agony, first chained to the Wheel of Pain and then enslaved as a Pit Fighter. Rather than allowing this brutal fate to conquer him, Conan builds an incomparable body and an indomitable spirit—both of which he needs when he suddenly finds himself a free man.
Aided by his companions Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez) and Valeria, Queen of Thieves (Sandahl Bergman), Conan sets out to solve the “riddle of steel,” seize ultimate power and, finally, take revenge on the warlord who killed his family.
Directed by John Milius and co-written by Milius and Oliver Stone, the...

Written and directed by Avi Nesher (Doppelganger), She is loosely, and I do mean loosely, based on the novel by H. Rider Haggard. Fresh off her appearance in films like Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja, Sandahl Bergman stars as the titular the beautiful warrior-queen who rules by the sword in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Women battle, men are used for ritual sex and sacrifice, but the arrival of three strangers plunges She into a nightmare quest for survival.
Together, She and her ill-matched companions cross the Forest of Yellow Death to encounter a tribe of innocents by day and man-eating werewolves by night, and an invisible sailor who literally multiplies when attacked. They make a last stand on Blood Bridge against The Norks, a master warrior tribe that lives only by war and pillage.

I don’t really know what to make of the name “Hell Comes to Frogtown”. I think it has served a dual purpose in being clever, and keeping me from seeing this film. The play on words is the clever part. Our hero’s name is Sam Hell, and guess what-he’s headed to Frogtown. Then again, it would be quite logical to assume that this could be a low budget Jim Henson film wannabe, and I guess it is. However, after I watched it, I’ve come to realize that it’s way more subversive than that. The two lead actors...

From anime to pitch-black thrillers, here's our pick of the underappreciated movies of 1987...
Sometimes, the challenge with these lists isn't just what to put in, but what to leave out. We loved Princess Bride, but with a decent showing at the box office and a huge cult following, isn't it a bit too popular to be described as underappreciated? Likewise Joe Dante's Innerspace, a fabulously geeky, comic reworking of the 60s sci-fi flick, Fantastic Voyage.
What we've gone for instead is a mix of genre fare, dramas and animated films that may have garnered a cult following since, but didn't do well either critically or financially at the time of release. Some of the movies on our list just about made their money back, but none made anything close to the sort of returns enjoyed by the likes of 1987's biggest films - Three Men And A Baby, Fatal Attraction...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian is one of those rare 1980s movie gems that just kicked a ridiculous amount of ass. Fantasy films weren't as popular back then as they are now, and the fact that they went all-out for a violent R-rated action film is awesome. If they made that movie today, the studio would want it to be cut down to a PG-13 rating, which is kind of sad. I freakin’ love this movie, and one day hopefully we get that Legend of Conan sequel. The last thing I heard was that it would start shooting this year, and I hope that’s still the plan! While we wait for an update, I've put together a list of 15 Fun Facts for Conan the Barbarian that you might not know. Enjoy!

The preternaturally gifted director and choreographer Bob Fosse (Cabaret) turned the camera on his own life for the madly imaginative, self-excoriating 1979 musical drama All That Jazz.
Roy Scheider (Jaws, Sorcerer) gives the performance of his career as Joe Gideon, whose exhausting work schedule—mounting a Broadway production by day and editing his latest movie at night—and routine of amphetamines, booze, and sex are putting his health at serious risk. Take Israeli director Avi Nesher out of Israel, and he creates celluloid crap of the third order. Consider She (1982) with Sandahl Bergman. Or Doppelganger (1993) with Drew Barrymore? Or even Ritual (2002) with Jennifer Grey? If you haven’t been face-to-face with any of these features, you’re probably being rewarded for accomplishing something quite wonderful in a former life.
But drop-ship Nesher back to his native country, and he can surprise you. Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) is semi-engaging look at the plight of Indian immigrants living in the backwoods of Israel during the sixties. As for The Secrets (2007), here’s an exceptionally fine tale of an Orthodox Jewish young woman who wants to break all the rules by studying the Talmud and living her life as a lesbian. Really a must-see.
Now Nesher’s latest effort, The Matchmaker, is currently trodding down the theater aisles. No confetti is needed.

Adi Shankar (producer of The Grey) will produce a new all-female action-style film, to be written by Dutch Southern, kinda like The Expendables.
Now, we wrote about how this was a fucking good idea a long-ass time ago. Not only have we been excited about it in our forums, but we actually made a list a while back. The impetus for that list was a statement Sigourney Weaver made about how it sucks that she's too old to play Ripley in another action Aliens film. We were pissed that Old Dudes get to keep making action films, but Weaver didn't think she could just because she's a chick.
Let's update our wish list. Because all the dudes in The Expendables films are Old Mother Fuckers, I demand that the female cast be Old Bitches. None of this "Zoe Saldana" or "Milla Jovovich" bullshit other sites keep talking about. Seriously. Can...

Conan the Barbarian
Directed by John Milius
Written by John Milius and Oliver Stone
USA, 1982
John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian is nothing if not title appropriate, because barbarous is the only potent way of describing it. Based on a pulp fiction magazine of the same name, the movie version feels like it only adapted every other page, focusing on the violent and naughty bits instead of story, resulting in a movie with as many breasts as dead bodies.
Like a Game of Thrones episode (an overlong one) minus any semblance of a plot or political intrigue, Conan the Barbarian is a gigantic misadventure that is, as the British might says, a bloody waste of time.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the eponymous Conan, and the film’s first major problem lies herein. Schwarzenegger surely looks the part, with his hulking physique, but his screen presence doesn’t match up to the...

These days, after "Lord of the Rings" and "Game Of Thrones," fantasy isn't just big business, but a genre that's spawned critically acclaimed awards favorites, and picked up Oscars and Emmys by the handful. As such, it's easy to forget that prior to the 1980s, the genre barely existed on screen, with animated takes on Tolkein's works the only really significant blip on the radar. But in 1977, "Star Wars," a film that owed as much to high fantasy as to science-fiction, became the biggest hit in history, and that opened the door to all kinds of new fantasy worlds.
The 1980s would see many, many examples of the genre, from "Labyrinth" and "Legend" to "Krull" and "Ladyhawke," but the film that started it all -- and was probably the finest of that decade's wave in the genre, was 1982's "Conan The Barbarian." Written and directed by gonzo, gun-loving genius John Milius...

The history of The Academy Awards is littered with strange and inexplicable happenings: Revealed shortcomings, spontaneous pushups, "The winner is Paul Newman," Sandahl Bergman's interpretive dance to "Eye Of The Tiger" (admittedly, one of the highlights of my life).
And of course ... Snow White rolling on the river.
But aside from the odd ceremony moments, and the fashion drama on the red carpet, it's the Oscar errors in judgment that we remember the most.
A few weeks ago we discussed the Oscar nomination Sins Of Omission, so let's now take a look at the performers who actually won, and how The Academy still blew it.
The 2005 nominees for Best Actor were:
Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote
Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain

Two cinematic blasts from Hollywood’s not-too-distant Cold War-inspired past are re-packaged together as a post-apocalyptic tag team on this two-for-one offering, which was made available by the folks at Image Entertainment just a few weeks ago (release date December 13, 2011). Each feature on this single-sided disc comes with its own title screen, scene selections, and a theatrical trailer. The DVD itself plays a few other vintage trailers (C.H.U.D., anyone?) before the main film selection menu. Otherwise, it’s all a pretty bare bones affair. But with mega-blockbusters like these,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger, who muscled his way into screen action lore as Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, returns to the sword-and-sorcery realm as Kalidor in Red Sonja, based on stories by Conan creator Robert E. Howard. Brigitte Nielson is the flame-haired heroine Sonja, leading a glorious quest in a mystical land where fortress wall have faces, dinosaur bones form a bridge, a lethal mechanical serpent writhes, swarming minions follow a vile queen (Sandahl Bergman)…and where heroes lay claim to legend.

Conan had a pretty rough start in life.
He was born amidst battle with his own father (Ron Perlman) administering a C-Section by dagger to his dying mother in order to bring the child out while she still lived. Then, while growing up amongst his small village of Cimmerians, it's quickly found that the young Conan is a natural warrior when he singlehandedly takes out a small band of enemy warriors when he's only eight years old.
However, natural prowess isn't enough to stop his village from being invaded by the forces of the evil Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang) and his half-witch daughter Marique (Rose McGowan). Invader Zym (hah!) annihilates Conan's village, killing his father as...

Chicago – I’m going to withhold judgment until I see it but, on paper, it makes no sense to remake John Milius’ 1982 fantasy/action classic “Conan the Barbarian” for one simple reason — there’s only one Ah-nuld. The movie weighed heavily on the charisma of its unique star, someone who was essentially catapulted to the A-list by this film and lightning only strikes once. Does anyone think that Jason Momoa, star of the August 19th remake from Marcus Nispel (remake “King” after desecrating “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Friday the 13th”) will find the same magic? Check out the originals, now on Blu-ray, and see the standard he has to live up to.
In 1982, Arnold Schwarzenegger was far from the icon he is today. This is before affairs with nannies, political office, and even breakout hits like “Predator,” “Commando,” and “The Terminator” were yet to come. He was still a...

Saying that Jason Momoa takes over a room is easy and undoubtedly expected. Momoa is huge and immediately commands your respect. But what is unexpected and delightful about him is how damn warm, personable, and nice he is. I don't know what I was expecting – a growling badass, I suppose – but it wasn't a guy who was so quick to laugh, smile, joke, and make fun of himself. Even his costar, Rachel Nichols, was utterly under his spell and the two often communicated in in-jokes and shorthand that the rest of the roundable couldn't really understand. Any of the wonky bits in the middle of this interview are a result of their camaraderie. We were given copies of a comic book based on the new Conan film, and when he walked in, Momoa immediately picked up mine and asked me what it was. He flipped through it, turned to me,...

Can women over 40 be awesome action heros like all those guys over 60 still are?
Amidst Sigourney Weaver's recent disappointing statements about thinking she's too old to be playing Ripley in any further Aliens franchise movies and the awesome news that Linda Hamilton may star in a Terminator 5 film, we've got our panties all fucked up because we've been debating how much we love action heroines, and how many of them are over 40 now. We don't think that's a bad thing - in fact, we think women over 40 are awesome action heroes and we think you do too. We think you'd be out in theaters in masses to see Ripley or Sarah Connor tear shit up once again, and so would we.

Conan The Barbarian (1982)
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow, Sandahl Bergman, Mako | Written and Directed by John Milius
By now everyone should know the story of Conan – based on the books by Robert E. Howard, the film sees the mother and father of a young Cimmerian boy, Conan, killed before the boys eyes by the vicious Thulsa Doom (Jones) and his cohorts, who then sells Conan into slavery. Forced to push the “Wheel of Pain” for years, a grown-up and extremely muscular (and extremely monotone) Conan (Schwarzenegger) is trained as an arena fighter and then inexplicably freed by his master. Freed to begin a quest to avenge his parents massacre at the hands of Thulsa Doom…

Conan the Barbarian sounds like the ultimate beefcake action movie. But the film is actually a fascinating curio, starring a cast of non-actors and featuring one of cinema history’s great scores. The first major starring role for Arnold Schwarzenegger (who supposedly had to lose muscle mass in order to swing the sword), Conan has very little to do with Robert E. Howard’s character and everything to do with the particular obsessions of director John Milius, who mashed several different Conan stories together, sprinkled on some Nietzsche and some caveman religion, and then poured in a river of blood.

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
Conan O'Brien is currently facing down one of the deadliest demons he's ever crossed: NBC, whose decision to move Jay Leno back into the coveted 11:35 Pm slot has left the redheaded late night personality in an awkward predicament. Aside from crafting a strongly worded memo, what can the funnyman do in his darkest hour?
For one, he could take a page from "Conan the Barbarian," my pick for today's Sick Day Stash.

We love our fantasy/sci-fi women ... ladies who can wield a sword or rocket launcher as well as any man, but do it so much more stylishly and, in some cases, in much less clothing! Here are ten women we definitely want on our side in the heat of battle.
Jane Fonda as "Barbarella"
in Barbarella
"Queen of the Galaxy" is a tough moniker to live up to, but if anyone can do it, Barbarella can. She has to deal with murderous children and their killer dolls, horny aliens, a blind (albeit hot) angel, and Anita Pallenberg as an eyepatch wearing assassin who Really wants to get to know her. Best of all, she shows us the proper way to strip in zero gravity, and you can see it Here, in one of the greatest (and mildly Nsfw) openings in film history.

''Raw Nerve'' is likely to register only a dull throb at the boxoffice, eking out a perfunctory run on the way to video. With a cast of Glenn Ford, Sandahl Bergman, Traci Lords and Jan-Michael Vincent, this terror of personality yarn might retrieve modest initial returns on the vid rental circuit, but its simplistic plotting and doltish dialogue will not appease viewers with any discriminatory nerve-endings.
In this brutal suspenser, Ted Prior stars as Jimmy, a handsome, repressed 36-year-old stock car driver who lives with his 18-year-old sister. Perhaps the only professonal race car driver in history who's not a skirt chaser, Jimmy definitely doesn't have all his pistons going. And he keeps getting headaches, which trigger momentary memory fragments -- grisly shotgun murders. But he's a

nice guy and thinks he should go to the police with his tale, an idea that does not sit well with his booze-hound buddy Blake (Randall ''Tex'' Cobb).
Amazingly, he goes anyway and pours out his heart, but the flat-footed homicide division (Glenn Ford, Jan-Michael Vincent) dismiss him as just another hysterical confessor. All, however, are not deadbeats on the investigative front: an aggressive female reporter (Sandahl Bergman) decides to get the story out of Jimmy; her m.o. is to bed him down. Such is the sophistication of this ''Nerve.''

Still, hats off to Cobb for a convincing characterization of a red-neck beer swiller and to Bergman for her appropriately tenacious portrayal of the investigative journalist. As the two doltish cops, Ford and Vincent, admittedly, don't have much to work with -- so sluggish are the roles.
Technical contributions are serviceable: in particular, Andrew Parke's dark and glossy cinematography adds a fittingly chilly hue to the rampagings, while editor Tony Malinowski smartly pinches this ''Nerve'' with some razor cuts.
