Mystery Mistress.
After kicking off March with discussions of the Kristen Stewart vehicle Personal Shopper (listen) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (listen), we’re getting a little silly with a deep dive into Raja Gosnell‘s live-action cartoon sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) for its 20th anniversary!
In the film, canine sleuth Scooby-Doo (Neil Fanning) once again joins his pals Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) when the Evil Masked Figure breaks into the Coolsonian Criminology Museum and steals a bunch of costumes that belonged to Mystery Inc.’s previously unmasked foes! What’s worse? E.M.F. is using them to create real monsters! It’s up to the gang to stop the monsters’ attack on Coolsville, while dodging the libelous attacks of television journalist Heather Jasper-Howe (Alicia Silverstone), who is out to discredit their investigations.

The 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "It" may be best known for Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise, who made an entire generation seriously terrified of clowns, but it would be nothing without the heart and soul of the Loser's Club. In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.
As a result of this, "It" has an interesting casting dilemma of finding not only seven...

Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green, who played Willow and Oz on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, recently reunited to celebrate Green's birthday. Green and Hannigan have previously worked together outside of Buffy, including an episode of How I Met Your Mother and the film My Stepmother Is an Alien. The chemistry between Willow and Oz on Buffy has left a lasting legacy, with hopes for another on-screen reunion between the actors.
The stars of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, including Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green, have a mini-reunion. In the early seasons of Buffy, Willow (Hannigan) and Oz (Green) were one of the most popular Buffy couples. Even though Oz exited the show by season 4, while Willow entered into a fan-favorite relationship with Tara Maclay (Amber Benson), Oz remained one of the more fondly remembered and underutilized characters in the entire Buffyverse.

Actor Charlize Theron floated the idea of starring in the Oscar-winning Monster to quite a few people before actually doing the movie. Even her Italian Job co-stars caught wind of her aspirations to do the incredibly dark film. However, her castmates wondered how serious she was about actually doing the movie.

Theron sought feedback from quite a few people when she was gearing up to do Monster. The 2003 feature was a massive departure from Theron’s usual flicks, as it saw her portray real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos. In an interview with Advocate, Theron remembered shopping the script around to see if others would’ve liked it as much as she did. Some couldn’t wait to see her in the movie. Others, however, were left confused.
“My mom read the script and she really loved it.

Some TV characters destroy their own reputation with one unforgivable crime, no matter how beloved they were before. Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer sexually assaulted Buffy and his reputation plummeted. Rachel Berry in Glee sends another talented singer to a crack house out of jealousy, showing her unethical behavior and blurring the lines of morality. Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones undergoes a drastic personality shift and becomes the Mad Queen, damaging her character and the overall storyline.
Warning: This article contains mentions of sexual assault, death, and violence.

Whether they get away with it or not, it's hard to forget times when a brilliant character manages to destroy their own reputation within a matter of moments. The upcoming episode of The Simpsons season 35 will spoof the popular HBO show The White Lotus, potentially repeating a past mistake of introducing unnecessary new characters. The show's recent parodies of other TV shows risk losing focus on existing characters and spending too much time introducing new ones, as seen in the poorly executed Succession spoof. The Simpsons' best prestige TV parody succeeded by incorporating existing characters and telling an original story, rather than relying on the addition of new characters to recreate another comedic series.
The news that The Simpsons season 35 will soon spoof a popular HBO show could see the series repeat a recent mistake. The co-showrunner of The Simpsons, Al Jean, posted a photo of an upcoming episode's script to X with the caption “Very fun The Simpsons read today,” and a title page that read "The Yellow Lotus.” From this context, viewers can discern that an...

Killing off a major character can be a turning point for a series and allow for the development of other characters. The way a character dies is just as important as when, as it should serve a narrative purpose and not feel forced or unnecessary. Bringing back a character after seemingly killing them off can undermine the impact of their death and suggest a lack of creative ideas.
Moving forward after the death of a main character can be a struggle for television shows, but if the show is too careful not to kill off a character, or does it at the wrong time, it can be just as ruinous to the series. Legendary country star Dolly Parton was an uncredited executive producer on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, as the show came from her production company Sandollar Productions, which she co-founded with her former manager, Sandy Gallin. So if there’s anyone who should have an idea of what’s going on with the Buffy reboot that was announced some years back, it’s Dolly – and she said it’s still in the works.

Character exits should be handled with respect, but many shows fail to do so, leaving characters with frustrating and unrealistic departures. Some shows don't give proper explanations for character departures, leaving fans unsatisfied. Characters should stay true to their established personalities and relationships when they leave, but some shows make them act out of character for the sake of the plot.
An actor's exit is a sensitive topic, and it is important to treat their character with respect until the very end, which is often not the case. The reason for the cast member's departure from the show can play a big role in how their character is written off. If a conflict has led the actor to quit or be dismissed, the character might end up getting all the heat. However, even without any disagreements, the character can get the short end of the stick,...

There’s an admirable ambition to Jack Begert’s directorial debut, Little Death. The film, which premiered at Sundance, announces its intentions with an early scene of communal complaint. At dinner, Martin Solomon (David Schwimmer), a TV writer with directorial aspirations, laments the state of his industry. In addition to their disdain for lazy and too-sensitive audiences, he and his friend, Augustus (Fred Melamed), discuss the limitations of narrative filmmaking. Augustus argues that television allows writers to explore the interiority of multiple characters, whereas films can only really sustain one point of view.
With Little Death, Begert tries to prove Augustus wrong. The director, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Dani Goffstein, constructs a story plunging viewers into the ravaged emotional lives of different characters. It tries to stretch the bounds of the narrative form, to upend convention and encourage us to rethink our relationship to storytelling. It aims...

There’s a perplexing choice at the heart of “Little Death,” directed by Jack Begert, best known for his work in music videos. That choice is essentially to make two very different movies and smash them together. If you squint closely, you can see the thematic throughlines between them, both stories about addiction told through different prisms, but while one is grating, the other is deftly told. You just have to make it through the first to get to the one that is more elegantly executed.
Begert is primarily a music video director with credits like Olivia Rodrigo’s recent “get him back!” and Jack Harlow’s Fergie-sampling “First Class” under his belt. The hyperactive visual style of that genre is on full display in the first half of “Little Death,” which is narrated by a depressed, misogynistic television writer named Martin played by David Schwimmer and, eventually, Gaby Hoffmann,...

Teenager Meg Griffin isn’t only an afterthought to her family (cartoon dad Peter regularly forgets about her existence even when she’s standing right next to him), the character also didn’t appear in the 1995 student film from which Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane developed his hit animated comedy.
MacFarlane made animated short ‘The Life of Larry’ while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1990s. It featured “loveable but tactless lower middle class” dad Larry, his supportive wife Lois, their heavy-set blonde, baseball-cap-wearing son Milt, and “incisive, cynical” talking dog named Steve, plus all the cutaway gags and pop culture parodies for which Family Guy would become famous… but no super-intelligent baby, and no butt-of-every-joke teenage daughter Meg.
One-off 1997 sequel ‘Larry and Steve’ lost Larry’s wife and son to focus on the talking dog, but by the time of the seven-minute 1998 Family Guy pilot,...

Goodbye, Christmas and New Year’s. Hello, awards season!
The Golden Globes are upon us, and that means the festivities kick off with W Magazine’s annual Friday night soiree toasting its Best Performances Issue. Expect to see well-heeled, A-List celebrities mix and mingle elbow-to-elbow in the penthouse suite of the Chateau Marmont.
That same evening, Jon Hamm, Willem Dafoe and Wilmer Valderrama will be among the celebs at the Golden Globes Foundation Dinner helping to present $5 million in grant awards to 96 non-profits.
In the past, studios and networks threw lavish affairs in separate ballrooms at the Beverly Hilton immediately following the Globes, but things have slowed down in recent years due to the Covid pandemic and controversies that rocked the HFPA. Instead, there are smaller affairs being thrown at venues throughout Los Angeles in the nights leading up to the Globes and immediately following the big show.

Awards season kicks into overdrive on the first weekend of the year with the return of the Golden Globes. The 81st telecast has a new broadcast partner (CBS), a new host (Jo Koy), new catering (Nobu) and a new social calendar accompanying it. For years, the Golden Globes were followed by a crush of studio and network bashes inside the show’s headquarters at the Beverly Hilton, making it a favorite of countless party-hopping revelers. But pandemic era cutbacks and studio consolidation upended the festivities — gone is the Warner Bros. and InStyle soiree while HBO scaled back under new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery and will be hosting something on Emmy weekend — though all is not lost. This year’s parties are spread across the weekend and at various venues across the city.

The What If...? series is finding success due to its ability to explore unique concepts and storylines within the Marvel multiverse. The series retains most of the original voice cast and introduces one-shot characters, making it highly anticipated and enjoyable for fans. Marvel should learn from What If...? and focus on creating original and self-contained stories that are fun and different rather than being tied to a strict timeline and continuity.
It's no secret that Marvel Studios is in a bit of freefall. Part of this has to do with the fact that they put many eggs in one basket, and another is because they've made a few too many quick decisions. However, there is one place where they continue to find success. The What If...? Series.

In the years since it wrapped up, loving "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has become complicated. Specifically, the legacy of the seminal '90s series has been somewhat tarnished after multiple allegations against creator and showrunner Joss Whedon surfaced. Not only did several members of the "Buffy" crew accuse Whedon of fostering a toxic set, but numerous other colleagues and even his ex-wife came out to claim that he had acted unprofessionally at best, and abusive at worst.
The most vocal of all the "Buffy" cast was Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia on the show and later its spin-off "Angel." Carpenter alleged that Whedon was "cruel" to her and others on-set and that his behavior caused her to suffer from a "chronic physical condition." Thankfully, the "Buffy" sequel series — an audio show called "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story" — finally brings some justice for Carpenter. But she wasn't the only one who struggled behind the scenes of "Buffy.

Robot Chicken, one of Adult Swim's longest-running hits, has ended its 11th season with no news of season 12. While it's possible that the show is gone for good, it's more likely that the crew is taking an extended break after working on the show for 17 years. With its unique stop-motion animation and satirical take on popular culture, Robot Chicken has become an iconic show that deserves a proper series finale if it were to end.
Fans of Adult Swim are likely familiar with one of the network's longest-running hits that continues to be successful, Robot Chicken. The stop-motion action figure sketch comedy is unique not only to its network, but animation as a whole. Since its 2005 debut, Robot Chicken has seen 220 episodes and multiple specials across 11 seasons. For the most part, seasons have aired semi-regularly, though gaps of a year to a year and a half between seasons are not uncommon.

Both Mike Myers and Seth Green, who worked closely with Troyer, spoke highly of his professionalism, talent, and the impact he had on the set, highlighting his enduring legacy in the Austin Powers series.
The Austin Powers franchise, a rollicking blend of comedy, espionage, and 60s nostalgia, almost had a fourquel, and the movie would have followed Austin Powers' Mini-Me. Created by Mike Myers, who also stars as the eponymous character, parodies the flamboyance and peculiarities of spy films, particularly the James Bond series. Central to its appeal is the quirky cast of characters, among which Mini-Me, portrayed by the late Verne Troyer,...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived anthology horror satire “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters,” which aired on TruTV back in 2018.
Although these days it’s known mainly as the channel on cable that plays “Impractical Jokers” all day, every day, back in 2018, Tru TV sought out to try some different programming. After successfully pulling away from their line up of reality shows, the network aimed to deliver a hefty line up of original comedy series, many of which ended up being damn good.
Among the line up introduced, there was “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters.” Comedian, actor, and director Goldthwait is no stranger to the horror genre (I loved his found footage film Willow Creek), and was the mastermind behind this delightfully unusual horror anthology series. Every week, “Misfits & Monsters” told a variety of half hour stories, all of which were a healthy mix of dark comedy,...

Marvel has thrived on the multiverse for some time, with comic book runs and films set across different timelines. Since its debut in 2021, Marvel's animated series What If...? created a format where Marvel's greatest heroes and villains are free to explore realms and universes unbound by the conventions of the MCU canon. This year, just in time for the holidays, Marvel's What If...? is back for its second season, ringing in the season of hope and good wishes with two action-packed tales of goodwill. Premiering on Disney+ starting December 22nd and airing a new episode every night over nine nights, What If...? Season Two is a great holiday treat for Marvel fans.
"What If...Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?" reimagines a world where Ronan the Accuser has deposed Thanos, leaving the world under a shield, enforcing isolation against an impending invasion. Nebula, her loyalty sworn to the Nova Corps, must...

The Dm, Jasmine Bhullar, had to balance player interactions and ensure each character had a meaningful moment before their inevitable demise. The episode stars Matthew Lillard and showcases his love for D&d, while the scary two-headed Demogorgon and horror-comedy elements add to the thrilling story.

20th Century Fox wasn’t sure what it had in Star Wars, and apparently, neither did George Lucas. The director was building up his company, Lucasfilm, and unleashed his secret weapon: Charley Lippincott. He saw to it DelRey had the novelization out months before the film, as well as three of the six-issue comics adaptation from Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin at Marvel. These people were lined up for day one, and the word of the month spread so fast that it endured throughout the summer of 1977.
