The millions of people who've seen the recent Dune movies without having read Frank Herbert's book beforehand probably noticed an overwhelming number of similarities to other storied franchises. That's not a coincidence. The 1965 novel isn't the origin point of sci-fi or fantasy literature, but it's arguably the most successful and influential in its category.
Dune represented a huge step up in terms of epic worldbuilding and episodic storytelling, and it introduced plot arcs, character archetypes, and genre elements that are so common today, that Herbert's originality can easily be taken for granted. Countless books, TV series, and films have been inspired by Dune, including Star Trek, The Chronicles of Riddick, Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and even Futurama. The following five franchises, however, did more than riff on Herbert's ideas or parody the tropes he created. Each one has such strong parallels to Dune that without it,...

Dr. Janet Fraiser dutifully served the Stargate franchise for seven seasons as Stargate Command's Chief Medical Officer. During her time on Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright's series Stargate Sg-1, she saved the lives of every member of the Sg-1 team and was a beloved member of the crew. Fraiser was kind and benevolent but unafraid of risking her life if it meant saving the life of another. The latter led to her being killed in the Season 7 two-part episode "Heroes," when she rushed onto the battlefield to stabilize injured airman Simon Wells and lost her own life. Dr. Fraiser died as she lived -- working tirelessly in dangerous situations to help others.

March 17, 1951 was a great day in history, because that the day Kurt Russell entered the world. And while he would go on to become one of the biggest icons of the eighties and nineties, many folks don’t know that Russell started as a child star for Disney, even acting opposite his future life partner Goldie Hawn in The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band (1968). From the sixties into the seventies, he starred in Disney flicks like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), but as the studio’s movies started to flop and Russell got older, a change of pace was needed. Arguably, Russell’s career took off when he began working with director John Carpenter, with the first movie being 1979’s TV movie Elvis, but what are Kurt Russell’s best movies? To celebrate his 73rd birthday, let’s dig into them here.

Star Trek is one of best and most well-known science fiction franchises of all time, so it’s no surprise that it’s had a huge influence on the rest of the genre. From other space-faring adventures to distant worlds to straight up parodies of the Enterprise and its crew, there are plenty of shows and movies that owe a bit to Gene Roddenberry‘s creation.
This is not a list of every single show or film that has been inspired by Star Trek because that list would cover a pretty good proportion of sci-fi on screen since 1966. But if you want to watch something Star Trek-adjacent, we’ve picked out 10 of our favorite shows and movies that were, to a greater or lesser degree, inspired by Star Trek.

After almost a year of radio silence, we have some good news to report about Leverage: Redemption.
The fan-favorite reboot has been renewed for a third season, which is set to air in 2024.
There is a significant change on the horizon for the series.
It will no longer be a Freevee original and has been shifted to Prime Video for the next season.
No reason for the change in streaming home has been given, but it's probably thanks to the devoted audience that has embraced the show since it premiered in July 2021.
Reboots are tricky to pull off, with many imploding once the initial curiosity factor wears off.
But fans have connected with this revamped series, thanks to its featuring many franchise veterans and new characters to tell a different story.

Exclusive: It’s been a year of evolution for the European Film Market and its TV track Berlinale Series Market. Management is changing at sister festival Berlinale, with Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian exiting amid worries about finances, and the number of films screened reducing.
Meanwhile, Berlinale Series boss Julia Fidel has also departed, with the track was discontinued as an independent program. Series will instead be highlighted as part of the Berlinale Series Gala — a move the festival thinks brings it closer in line with other European film fests such as Cannes and Venice.
Notably for the TV biz, the Berlinale Series Market industry conference remains unaffected and will be running a full program. Last year the likes of The White Lotus exec producer David Bernad, Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak and The Tinder Swindler director Felicity Morris took the stage in sessions hosted by myself and Max Goldbart.

“Leverage: Redemption” has been renewed for Season 3, but will be changing platforms. The first two seasons aired on Amazon’s Freevee, but Season 3 will debut on sister streamer Prime Video in 2024 instead.
The move is significant, as “Leverage: Redemption,” a revival of the TNT series “Leverage,” was one of the major scripted titles available on Freevee. The show was ordered to series in 2020, when Freevee was still branded as IMDb TV. Freevee’s biggest scripted series at present is “Bosch: Legacy,” while a spinoff of that show was recently ordered at Prime Video as well.

The most popular movie franchises typically run for multiple installments, with some still going strong today. However, there are also times when franchises start out promising with their potential but unceremoniously end after their sophomore outing. Several reasons contributed to these franchises' sudden pauses, whether because of a lackluster box office reception, critical backlash, or plans for a third movie falling apart.
These hopeful franchises could have kept going, but low reception of the second film or failed attempts at creating a third prevented that from happening. From Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy to The Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield, these franchises pulled the plug after two movies.

The following contains spoilers for Almost Paradise Season 2, Episode 1, "The Magellan Cross," now streaming on Amazon Freevee.
Almost Paradise does many things differently than the average TV show -- including sidestepping some of the biggest conventions. The series is best known as a showcase for Christian Kane's incredible action skills, but it's also much more character-driven than it's given credit for. And in its second season, it's jumped a story hurdle that other shows in its subgenre usually don't find a satisfying resolution to.
In following Kane's character Alex Walker, Almost Paradise fits into the same general space as fan-favorites like Chuck, Lucifer, Psych and White Collar: an outsider helps law enforcement solve crimes. The main character usually creates friction with the cops or agents because of their conflicting approaches, but they work together because of a mutual goal and eventually, the hero becomes part of the team.

When Almost Paradise premiered, it was a breath of fresh air in the action genre -- but that was years ago. The series survived a lengthy hiatus, during which it moved from WGN to Amazon Freevee and is finally back for its second season. Like its hero Alex Walker, the series has overcome every hurdle without missing a step. Season 2 has all of the excitement, banter, and beautiful scenery that make this an adventure unlike any other.
Christian Kane's character Alex is the heart and soul of the show. His fresh start in the Philippines has turned out to be not quite so peaceful, but at the same time, it's been exactly what Alex didn't know he was looking for. Cbr spoke to Christian about finally being able to show audiences what's next for Alex and what's so special about Almost Paradise...

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers from all of Almost Paradise Season 2.] “Let’s go steal…” Those are three words that every Leverage fan knows well but has never heard come out of Christian Kane‘s mouth — until his other Freevee series, Almost Paradise. In Season 2 (all 10 episodes of which are now available to stream), there are a few things that will be very familiar to Leverage (and Redemption) fans, from flashbacks with the stars in different roles to a casino heist, especially considering the common threads of Kane and executive producer Dean Devlin. “We didn’t really try to remind people of Leverage. We actually stole from Leverage,” Kane told TV Insider with a laugh. “Dean Devlin got his hands on that one, and he said, ‘Nope, this is Leverage, and we’re just going to make it Leverage.‘ And it was so much fun.” The star then went ...

The following contains spoilers for Almost Paradise Season 2, Episode 1, "The Magellan Cross," now streaming on Amazon Freevee.
Since Almost Paradise has been away for literally years, it's no surprise that the series from Independence Day filmmaker Dean Devlin and Gary Rosen comes back with one of its biggest setpieces ever. A pair of bad guys break into the Sacred Heart Church, looking for the titular Magellan Cross. The terrified Father Gabriel informs them that the cross is not in the church, but when he tries to escape, he's stabbed in the gut. The panicked thugs set the place of worship on fire to make his death look like an accident. When a season starts with burning down a church, it's clear that the stakes have been raised.
Elsewhere, forcibly retired DEA agent Alex Walker is taking another physical, with his doctor saying he's made "real progress" in battling his hypertension since coming to the Philippines.

Christian Kane has played essentially the same character in four delightful light crime series. In “Leverage” and its successor, “Leverage: Redemption,” he was Elliot. In “The Librarians,” he was Jake. In this incarnation, “Almost Paradise: Season 2,” he’s Alex. All have some sort of military or intelligence background to prepare them for the current undertakings. Each time Kane’s character is smarter than he looks, does his thing with a grim sense of humor, and is tougher than all he must oppose. Underneath the surface of surly, he’s noble, loyal to his colleagues, and hell-bent on helping whoever needs it. He’s always reluctant to use violence but in just about every episode of each, he has to. And does it well. 180 times, collectively. Yet even after all those cloned outings,...

Almost Paradise fans, get ready for a summer with extra blessings, because season 2 is just around the corner! After season one finished airing back in mid-2020, it seemed like we might have seen the last of Alex Walker (Christian Kane) and his new detective friends Kai Mendoza (Samantha Richelle) and Ernesto Almarez (Arthur Acuña), but our favorite gang of Philippines-based crime-solvers are back on the case this July in a brand-new, ten-episode season.
In season two, Alex will be questioning his place on the island, but with the help of his trusted friends, he will discover a renewed sense of family in paradise!
“There’s never been an American series filmed in the Philippines,” star Kane told Tell-Tale TV. “I feel like we know what Korea looks like, we know what Japan looks like and we know what China looks like because we’ve seen films that they’ve been featured in.

Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has drawn early support from a range of figures in entertainment, media and tech, including six-figure contributions from a list that includes Seth MacFarlane, Netflix’s Reed Hastings and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
Among donors in entertainment, Jeffrey Katzenberg gave the highest amount, $889,600. He is serving as Biden’s campaign co-chair. His wife, Marilyn Katzenberg, gave the same amount.
The list of donors also include actors such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, who gave $20,000, and other contributions came from Allison Janney, Rosario Dawson and Wendell Pierce.
Biden’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee reported raising $72 million in the latest quarter, the first of the president’s reelection bid, which he announced on April 25. The campaign has $77 million cash on hand.

After the Leverage: Redemption Season 2 finale, executive producer Dean Devlin told us that Christian Kane would say that his character, hitter Eliot Spencer, could never be redeemed. He was right. While the last episode we saw of the Freevee series (in January) saw grifter Sophie (Gina Bellman) face her past and let go of her guilt, Eliot didn’t think he’d ever get to that point, not with what he’s done. And Kane agrees. When TV Insider spoke with Kane recently, we asked him about that, the future of the show (it has yet to be renewed or canceled), and much more. Is there any word on a Season 3 of Leverage: Redemption? Christian Kane: We have no idea. The writers’ strike has really put us — there’s nothing anybody can do right now, you know what I mean? Everybody’s hands are sort of tied with this thing.

Dean Devlin revealed plans for sequels to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, which would have brought back Will Smith in the lead.
Devlin, who produced and co-wrote the film with director Roland Emmerich, discussed the sequels with Yahoo News. Titled Independence Day Forever Part I and II, the films would've explored how Smith's character, Marine Captain Steven Hiller, is affected by newfound fame. "It was a bit like Rocky III," Devlin explained. "He'd gotten rich and he'd gotten famous, and he had to get the eye of the tiger back you know? He's a little too comfortable and it's his chance to bring the old Will Smith out of retirement." Smith was initially excited by the idea and Devlin and Emmerich brought their screenplay to 20th Century Fox, who called it "the best first draft we've read of any script," according to Devlin.

Independence Day star Vivica A. Fox recently acknowledged that not bringing leading man Will Smith back for the sci-fi classic's sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, was a mistake.
Fox lamented Smith's absence from Independence Day's 2016 follow-up in an interview with The Av Club. "I really feel we missed out by not bringing Will Smith back," she said. "We had most of the original cast, but I think the one true link that was missing to the success of Independence Day 2 was that Will Smith wasn't there." At the time, there were conflicting reports on why Smith ultimately didn't reprise the role of Captain Steven Hiller in Resurgence. Director Roland Emmerich claimed that Smith wanted too much money, whereas Smith insisted he would've signed on for the sequel if he hadn't already committed to another 2016 release, Suicide Squad.

Unflinchingly candid as ever, Vivica A. Fox recently made her views clear about why the 2016 sequel to the iconic “Independence Day” fell short of the first: it lacked the irresistible charisma of Will Smith. While discussing her true-crime series “The Interrogation Room” with A.V. Club, Fox dived into the perceived failings of “Independence Day: Resurgence.”

In true Vivica A. Fox fashion, she’s keeping it real when it comes to why she believes 2016’s “Independence Day: Resurgence” wasn’t the success it could’ve been: It needed Will Smith.
“I just didn’t feel like it was good and lived up to the first one,” Fox told A.V. Club while promoting her true-crime series “The Interrogation Room.” “I really feel we missed out… by not bringing Will Smith back.”
Will Smith was in talks to return for “Independence Day: Resurgence” (and a third film that was planned at the time) but negotiations fell apart over Smith’s salary.
With Roland Emmerich directing and cowriting the script with Dean Devlin, the sequel took place 20 years after the first. In that time, Smith’s character, Steven Hiller, had died and returning and new characters now had to protect Earth from a new threat.

Had there been a sequel to 1994's Stargate, the franchise would have moved beyond Egyptian extra-terrestrials.
During an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, franchise producer and co-creator Dean Devlin discussed his and film collaborator Roland Emmerich's abandoned sequel plans for Stargate, as well as for 1996's Independence Day and 1998's Godzilla. The duo found so much mainstream success starting with Stargate that they planned to make a trilogy, with the second installment asking, "[W]hy are there pyramids in Mayan culture" and the third installment bringing the entire mythology together. "The third one was going to tie everything together," Devlin said. "We were gonna have the Yeti, we were gonna have the Loch Ness Monster. It was all going to make sense how these things are tied together."

If given a chance to re-make the infamous 1998 American-made Godzilla film, producer Dean Devlin revealed a fundamental change he would make to change the audience's perception of the Kaiju.
During an interview with Yahoo!, in which Devlin discussed their "intellectual" decision while making the movie, "deciding Godzilla was neither good nor evil." Because the 1998 film's Godzilla, often referred to as American Godzilla or Zilla, is portrayed as an animal attempting to reproduce by laying its eggs somewhere safe, it was difficult for audiences to develop an emotional connection with the creature. Agreeing with fan backlash over the film, Devlin explained how he would change the movie to appropriately alter fans' perception of the Kaiju if the opportunity arose: "I would have made Godzilla an absolute hero, and everyone would have been rooting for him the whole time."

The 1998 adaptation of Godzilla is infamous for its attempt at rebooting the iconic franchise and redesigning the kaiju. Producer Dean Devlin recently looked back on the film and expressed agreement with the film's negative reception.
In an interview with Yahoo, Devlin stated, "We made an intellectual decision that sounds good in the room, but is really terrible for making a movie... We decided that Godzilla was neither good nor evil — it was just an animal looking to reproduce. It was a threat to us because it puts us at risk in order to survive." He continued, "That's an interesting way to approach it, but it doesn't tell the audience how they're supposed to feel about the title character."

When it was announced that Independence Day was getting a sequel, everyone was hyped for the return of Will Smith’s pilot Steven Hiller. However, by the time Independence Day: Resurgence finally arrived it did not have Smith on board and Jessie T. Usher was brought in to take the lead as Hiller’s stepson. Even though the movie featured original stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Judd Hirsch, the lack of Smith’s involvement was a big factor in the film underperforming at the box office and effectively shutting down the franchise before the planned third movie could even get off the ground. Now writer/producer Dean Devlin has revealed what the original plan for Smith’s character was in the sequel.

Independence Day 2 writer-producer Dean Devlin reveals the original story plans he and Roland Emmerich had for Will Smith’s character. Released in 1996, Independence Day was both a huge smash at the box office with $817 million, and a huge career-booster for Smith as he transitioned from rapper/sitcom actor to movie star. Unfortunately, the much-later sequel Independence Day: Resurgence failed to recapture the magic of the original, pulling in just $389 million. In the wake of its box office failure, the disaster of Resurgence was largely blamed on the studio failing to lure Smith back to star as his original movie character Steven Hiller.
Whether 2016’s long-delayed Independence Day sequel would have been a blockbuster with Smith back in the pilot’s seat is something that can never be answered, but the original story writers Devlin and Emmerich had in mind for Smith’s character sounds more interesting than the movie that was finally made.

Godzilla 1998's never-made sequel was originally supposed to put the franchise back on track. The film was the first American attempt to mount a feature centered on the titular irradiated monster after he debuted in the 1954 Japanese classic Gojira and appeared in 21 Japanese sequels up to that point. However, the American version, which starred Matthew Broderick and was helmed by Independence Day's Roland Emmerich, turned out a lukewarm box office performance while being largely lambasted by critics and audiences.
Yahoo! Entertainment recently sat down with producer and co-screenwriter Dean Devlin to discuss some projects of his that never made it off the ground. One of these was the canceled sequel to Godzilla 1998, which would have led to an aborted Godzilla trilogy. He revealed that Godzilla 2 would have starred Broderick and followed him to Monster Island, where a Godzilla hatchling teased by the original film would encounter Mothra and Rodan,...

Fans of Stargate Sg-1 and its successors might have mixed feelings about the Roland Emmerich blockbuster that birthed the saga but given the importance of the Goa’uld System Lords to the overarching mythology it’s mind-boggling that... Ra wasn’t intended to be an alien.
The decision was made after Jaye Davidson’s performance threw the plan into jeopardy.
“He had a terrible substance abuse problem and was uninsurable,” explains Devlin.

“Roland and I had fallen in love with the idea of taking things that are part of our own mythological subconscious,” Devlin says. “The first movie asks, ‘Did aliens build the pyramids?’ The second one was going to deal with, ‘Why are there pyramids in Mayan culture?’”
