Discovery continued its investment in our company, content and community,” Rooster Teeth General Manager Jordan Levin said in a company memo. “Now however, it’s with a heavy heart I announce that Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.”
Around 150 staff are being affected, plus dozens of contractors and freelancers. A post from Rooster Teeth Community Manager Chelsea Atkinson asked that fans remember everyone at Rooster Teeth is “processing this in real time just like you,” and announced there will be a livestream about the closure March 7 on the Rooster Teeth website.

The crossover will be the first film set in the “Rwby” universe and will be animated by the same team as the web series. The film will be produced by Rooster Teeth in partnership with Warner Bros. Rooster Teeth, the division of WarnerMedia’s Otter Media dedicated to sci-fi, gaming, animation and fandom, has canceled its flagship Rtx 2020 convention. Instead, it’s planning a virtual event for fans in its place.
The decision came after the Austin Public Health department determined that the annual convention cannot be held at the Austin Convention Center. It had been set to run Sept. 5-7, 2020 (after already previously been postponed from July).
“Despite all our wishes and best efforts to bring us together in person this year, due to citywide restrictions on large-scale events, Rtx Austin 2020 has officially been cancelled,” the company announced on its website Thursday.
Further details about the virtual Rtx event will be shared when they become available, Rooster Teeth said. Those who bought tickets will receive refunds, or they can opt to postpone their badge to Rtx 2021 (at this link), which is scheduled for July 9-11, 2021.

Rooster Teeth co-founder Burnie Burns has departed the company he helped turn into a digital powerhouse.
In a statement on his just-launched website, Burns also shared that he and his wife, Ashley Jenkins, are moving "overseas" -- a decision that has been two years in the making despite the fact that Burns acknowledges it arrives during a particularly tumultuous time for the United States.
"As some of you have predicted over the past year, my steady move away from a public life was in preparation for this change," Burns wrote in a farewell message, noting that he had briefly returned to the Rt Podcast in recent months and still intends to pursue his myriad creative passions. "To that end, Rooster Teeth and I are currently working on a first-look agreement, which will enable me to incubate my own projects and then present them to the company for possible development."

Ryan Reynolds has tapped the animation maestros over at Rooster Teeth to create a video promoting a holiday charity venture.
The video, shared on Reynolds’ YouTube channel (1.8 million subscribers), is titled The Sweater Returns, and follows an ugly holiday sweater in a store window that nobody wants to buy, until a young man -- in Reynolds’ likeness -- picks it up to attend a holiday party, whereupon all of the other guests laugh at him. The short was produced by Rooster Teeth’s and Reynolds' Maximum Effort banner. It was written by Rooster Teeth’s Burnie Burns and Jordan Cwierz, with Reynolds serving as executive producer.
The purpose of the video is to raise awareness for The Hospital for Sick Children (or SickKids), the largest pediatric academic health sciences center in Canada whose aim is to improve the health of children through the integration of care, research, and education. Furthermore,...

The United States was slow to come to the notion of animation as TV programming for adults,. “It wasn’t kosher,” Adult Swim’s Svp Jason DeMaro said at a TCA panel on “grown up” cartoon.
Animation has the advantage of enjoying a higher level of suspension of disbelief, Rooster Teeth co-founder Burnie Burns explained.
It has allowed for characters who are despicable and yet can be funny in a way that live action TV cannot, enthused Margaret Dean, head of Crunchyroll studio and president of Women in Animation. Viewers can watch people experiencing horrible torture, and blood gushing, that, if you saw it in live action it would be horrible,” she added.
Animation also has led the field in on-screen diversity, and probing social issues, Fuse Media Chief Content Officer J-t Ladt argued.
One TV critic asked about the “toxic” fan base for some animated programming, singling out Rick & Morty.

Rooster Teeth, the Austin-based media giant that launched a video game publishing division two years ago, has unveiled its latest title: a multiplayer first-person shooter called Vicious Circle.
Set in a gritty, sci-fi comic book universe, Vicious Circle marks the first original IP game from Rooster Teeth Games. Previous titles, such as Rwby: Grimm Eclipse, have been inspired by existing series -- such as the long-running anime Rwby. Vicious Circle was created by Michael Hadwin, the company’s head of game development, in collaboration with the company’s founders and other Rooster Teeth execs.
Rooster Teeth founders Gus Sorola and Burnie Burns announced the new game yesterday on The Rooster Teeth Podcast alongside frequent personalities Gavin Free and Barbara Dunkelman. Citing the success of Grimm Eclipse, Burns said that the company tasked the same creative team with formulating an original concept. Viacom, YouTube, and Rooster Teeth all appeared at the third day of the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour on Friday.
Bet’s panel for “The Bobby Brown Story” was going well until the very end. Later, YouTube discussed budgeting their shows, and Rooster Teeth made their inaugural appearance at the press tour.
Here are three things we learned from Friday’s session.
1.Bobby Brown will need to be much more careful in future press appearances in promotion of the Bet miniseries “The Bobby Brown Story.” The iconic R&B singer had everything well in hand during most of his panel, taking questions about the death of his wife, Whitney Houston, and his daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in stride. All that stopped though when a reporter questioned Brown about an incident of domestic violence between himself and Houston in 2003. Rather than acknowledge his past sins–to which he admitted in...

Former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant will lend his voice to Rooster Teeth’s upcoming anime-style sci-fi series “gen:Lock.”
Tennant will play Dr. Rufus Weller (aka “Doc”), inventor of the titular technology in the show — giant, weaponized robot bodies known as mecha. Tennant, who starred as the Tenth Doctor in the BBC’s “Doctor Who,” joins the previously announced voice talent of Michael B. Jordan, Dakota Fanning and Kōichi Yamadera in the cast.
“Tennant is sci-fi royalty and we are thrilled to have him join this amazing cast,” said Burnie Burns, co-founder and chief creative officer at Rooster Teeth.

Rooster Teeth has greenlit animated dark comedy series “Spikeface” from Rcg, the production shingle of Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton — the trio behind “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
“Spikeface” will be produced in-house by Rooster Teeth Animation and will premiere in 2019 on Rooster Teeth’s subscription-streaming service, First, which is priced starting at $4.99 monthly.
McElhenney will executive produce the eight-episode original series, based on an idea by writers and executive producers Geoff Barbanell and Itai Grunfeld. 3 Arts Entertainment also will executive produce, along with Rooster Teeth co-founders Matt Hullum and Burnie Burns.
The series follows “one of the world’s great horror icons,” who slaughters a couple at a roadside motel — before he discovers they have a baby girl and decides to raise the orphan as his own. That pisses off his roommates, who also are iconic horror villains.
Casting and others details for the show have yet to be announced.

Rooster Teeth's heroes have suited up once again and are ready to do battle with extraterrestrial foes. The Austin-based studio has released Lazer Team 2, a feature film that serves as a sequel to 2016's Lazer Team.

The following excerpt serves as the forward to the paperback edition of Tom Roston’s book “I Lost It at the Video Store: A Filmmaker’s Oral History of a Vanished Era,” which is now available here. The new edition features more interviews with younger screen stars, including Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, as well as new era film visionaries such as Tim League and Burnie Burns.
If you’re a film freak much under the age of 40, you likely have no personal memory of the history of film being anywhere other than at your fingertips. Burnie Burns, who helped grow Rooster Teeth from a hit show (Red vs. Blue) into a thriving 300-person digital media empire, shared tips with aspiring creators during an intimate discussion at VidCon today entitled Gaming New Media.
Burns, 44, who founded Rooster Teeth before YouTube existed back in 2003, discussed the importance of honing a diversified business with varied revenue streams -- especially in light of the YouTube 'Adpocalypse', in which many creators have seen their ad revenues plummet. Burns said that, in building Rooster Teeth, he never let any one tier of the business comprise more than 30% of the company's total earnings.

The acquired funds helped make it possible for Olympians to travel to the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in the Austrian towns of Graz and Schladming and compete on a worldwide stage. The aforementioned YouTube stars also came along for the journey and helped to spread the event's positive message

In 2014, the digital entertainment studio Rooster Teeth invited its fans to suss out the details of a murder-mystery when it launched a series called Ten Little Roosters. A sequel to that show has since been greenlit, and it is now just a few days away from its premiere date. A trailer The Eleven Little Roosters, a spy-mystery-thriller that looks to be bigger and bloodier than its predecessor.
The titular Roosters are international spies who must figure out which one of them is a traitor. In each episode, characters will be killed off, and the viewers who accurately predict plot points by synthesizing clues like hidden Qr codes, in-dialogue hints, and audio cues will win prizes.
Even for viewers who aren’t super sleuths, The Eleven Little Roosters will have plenty of entertainment value. Its offbeat characters will generate plenty of comedy, and Rooster Teeth aficionados will recognize many of their favorite personalities among the cast.

Crowdfunding projects looking to push further contributions can now make use of an exciting new tool. Kickstarter has announced Kickstarter Live, a live streaming option for its creative community.
Kickstarter Live, according to a blog post from the crowdfunding platform, will be a stage on which creators can “broadcast cooking shows, host live product demos, perform songs, play test games, rehearse a new play, countdown the final seconds of their campaign, and much more.” Clearly, Kickstarter is interested in throwing its hat into the competitive live streaming ring, but it is also look to earn its community some extra funds. For example, when the studio Rooster Teeth crowdfunded its feature film Lazer Team, it hosted a 12-hour telethon in the middle of the campaign. Four heroes with super-powered suits of space armor are headed out to save the world...again. During a Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation, YouTube announced its plan to distribute a sequel to the Rooster Teeth feature film Lazer Team on its YouTube Red subscription service.
The original Lazer Team was Rooster Teeth’s first-ever feature-length film. After spending more than a decade building one of the Internet’s most dedicated fan communities, the Austin-based studio funded Lazer Team by raising more than $2.4 million on Indiegogo. A year later, the film was announced as one of the launch titles for YouTube Red, which costs $9.99 per month and offers access to premium content as one of its biggest selling points. Ultimately, the film arrived for Red subscribers in February of this year.
The first Lazer Team film followed its four leads, played by Burnie Burns, Michael Jones, Gavin Free, and Colton Dunn.

But with careful and close collaboration with some familiar faces, the post-production team accomplished wonders as they crashed spaceships and battled with lasers in impressive fashion — all captured in this behind-the-scenes look at the digital effects for the film.

In 2008, Burnie Burns and Gavin Free of online entertainment and production company Rooster Teeth saw a YouTube video of an Indian man performing a cosmic head massage. Watching the video triggered an Asmr, or automated sensory meridian response, experience for them both, and the two became incredibly fascinated with this man, Baba Sen — known as the “cosmic barber.” Over the next eight years, Burns and Free continually discussed the phenomenon of Asmr — an experience of a relaxing sensation triggered by many things such as whispered voices — and hoped to be able to get a head massage from Baba one day.

In its web series Google Autocomplete Interview, tech publication Wired asks notable people the questions Google search users want answered. In the show’s latest episode, the Conde Nast-owned property invited top YouTube stars AsapSCIENCE, MatPat, Burnie Burns, and The Slow Mo Guys to answer some Google autocomplete strings related to their lives and to the online video industry at large.
The questions lobbied by Googlers include a number of silly ones. Over the course of the video, we learn whether AsapSCIENCE are vegetarians (they’re not), whether MatPat is a brony (also no), and whether The Slow Mo Guys are narcissistic (one out of two, apparently).
On the flipside, some of them questions give the featured stars some room to offer insights about their platform of choice. MatPat, known as one of the YouTube community’s smartest analytic voices, gets a chance to explain the sort of work that goes toward achieving digital execelle.
