From Michel Hazanavicius, director of ‘The Artist.’
Jean-Luc Godard is no less than one of the five most influential filmmakers in the history of the medium. He’s best known as the figurehead of the French New Wave, but that’s a movement that’s been over nearly a half century now, and point of fact the overwhelming majority of Godard’s 124 directing credits come after the Fnw. He’s a man who started a movement and then was somewhat forced to remain in its shadow. There’s a feeling of old cinema — perhaps “classic” is the word — to the director’s oeuvre, but in truth Godard has always been at the forefront of cinematic experimentation no matter what the year or movement du jour, he’s always put innovation ahead of traditional storytelling. This is the man, after all, who gave us the famous quote: “A story should have a beginning, a...

North American moviegoers can step into the mind of the late H.R. Giger with Belinda Sallin's intimate documentary, Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World, which is hitting big screens in the U.S. and Canada this May. Also featured in our latest round-up is information on tonight's Everly signing with director Joe Lynch and cast and crew members at Burbank's Dark Delicacies horror shop, as well as the home media release details for Dark Sky Films' Let Us Prey.
Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World: Press Release -- "Surrealist artist H. R. Giger (1940-2014) terrified audiences with his Oscar-winning monsters in Ridley Scott's Alien. Sci-fi, horror, music, album covers, tattoos and fetish art have been influenced by his dark, intricate paintings and sculptures depicting birth, death and sex.
Both a mesmerizing introduction to Giger's oeuvre and a must-see for Giger devotees, Belinda Sallin's definitive documentary Dark Star: H.

On paper, it seemed like a done deal. Salma Hayek as a voluptuous prostitute fighting for a life against the cronies of her jilted ex-lover, a nefarious pimp who carries a samurai sword and cackles like a Bond villain? Sign me up. But for a fun-sounding exploitation flick – think Kill Bill meets Die Hard with a more bodacious lead – Everly is an astonishingly punishing watch, dragging Hayek through all kinds of uncomfortable tortures without offering much of anything else to pick up the narrative slack, be it humor, thrills or any semblance of depth.
As such, what’s left over is difficult to regard as anything other than a failure on the part of writer/director Joe Lynch and co-writer Yale Hannon, neither of whom are able to provide the adrenaline kick that a low-budget, pedal-to-the-metal action flick like Everly so intrinsically required. Without it, Hayek’s resilient sex slave...

Do you have nightmares about Bill Lumbergh telling you to put new cover sheets on your Tps reports? For some, the corporate cubicle setting is as horrifying as the creepy boiler rooms that Freddy Krueger haunts in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Script excerpts and storyboards for an imagined tenth film in the Elm Street franchise show Freddy tormenting a coma patient by placing him in a mind-numbing office environment where meaningless meetings, tear-inducing small talk, and countless hours of hellish tasks reign supreme, with no escape in sight. Also included in our latest round-up are Blu-ray / DVD release details and cover art for the Salma Hayek-starring Everly and information on the 20 recently announced Star Wars books that will take place in the time period between Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Written by Erin Ehrlich and Michael J. Cinquemani
Directed by Steve Gainer

While a breakup is undoubtedly difficult on the couple experiencing it, it can often also leave friends of the former couple in a lurch. Mutual friends often try to reconcile their personal relationships with the two individuals in a way that leaves everyone happy. With Matty and Jenna’s relationship existing in the cocoon of high school, this is even more apparent, and this week’s episode examines how their mutual friends cope and adjust to the change in their lives, in another solid episode that once again lets several characters share the spotlight.
The various reactions this episode, both to the new relationship between Jenna and Collin, and to the perceived brushing off that Jenna shows, put a strong focus...

Super is, as James Gunn tells me, “about a guy who is on some sort of spiritual quest, and he just happens to wear a superhero costume during it.” The film features Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page in their craziest roles so far, and parades a rate of violence more similar to The Toxic Avenger than Kick-Ass into the new subgenre of superhero movies that explain what it really means to be a caped crusader. However, at the end of this extensive interview, Gunn tells me, “only I know what this movie is.”
I sat down with Gunn, writer/director of the IFC Midnight film Super, in a roundtable interview in Austin, Texas during this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. With the interview taking place the day after its SXSW premiere, topics included Rainn Wilson wanting to avoid “Dwight-isms,” how this movie came before Kick-Ass, the possibilities of...

This interview originally ran as part of our Toronto Film Festival 2010 coverage.
Considering all the other subversive stuff in "Super," it makes a certain degree of sense that in making a film about a self-made superhero of questionable sanity and suspect superpowers, James Gunn found the full command of his own abilities as a writer/director. Known for such cult faves "Tromeo and Juliet" and "Slither," Gunn has been a master of the gross-out gag and the witty retort for quite some time, but in "Super," he does the unexpected in making a delightfully obscene film where puke jokes and savage beatings are in service of something genuinely philosophical.
It's a comedy first, every frame of which is as lovingly handmade as the costume of The Crimson Bolt, the alter ego of Frank D'Arbo (Rainn Wilson), a fry cook whose wife (Liv Tyler) falls back into her drug addiction and...

Sunday was a wonderful day. Why? Because I got to wake up in Austin, TX and go to South by Southwest Film Festival. And then there was the roundtable interview I got to partake in with James Gunn to promote his new movie Super, starring Rainn Wilson as a cook at a crappy diner who decides to take it to the crime in his city by way of a pipe wrench to the skull (read my review here).
Read the interview below:
Tfs: There’s a lot of entries into that kind of self-reflective comic book scene now, things like Kick-Ass or Special. Were you aware and wary of this?
Gunn: I was aware of it because I wrote my script in 2002 so it was around before all those things. The first thing I heard about was Special, because Special was written after that and my movie was out there...

Amazon has dipped its toe into the subscription streaming-video business, competing with Netflix by turning its Amazon Prime free-shipping service into a source for not just holiday gifts, books and tax-free, two-day-shipped sundries but also movies. It’s obviously a soft-launch for something bigger, and, for those who plunk down their $75 yearly fee for the shipping benefits, a really good deal.
Amazon claims to have launched with 5,000 titles, but one article cited only 1,668 films and 484 TV shows. (The discrepancy was chalked up to counting each episode of a TV series as a separate title.) So, Amazon hasn’t got anything on Netflix with its 11,000+ titles… yet. For now, though, there are some gems in Amazon’s back catalog. Here are 25 Filmmaker-approved movies Amazon Prime members can stream now.

Reviewed at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.
It wouldn't be fair to the filmmakers behind "Dirty Girl" to ignore the fact that after it became the film to score one of the richest distribution deals thus far at this year's Toronto Film Festival, a target was placed on its back. With that said, I now know what it must felt like to have been part of the audience for the film's first press screening of Joel Schumacher's drama "Twelve" where it had been jeered and laughed at only to discover days later it had been bought for $2 million. As a comedy, "Dirty Girl" has precious few laughs, but delivers the same sort of shock -- I could've gone the rest of my days happily without seeing Dwight Yoakam simulate ejaculating on his prized Cadillac with a garden hose during a gratuitous car wash scene or the sweaty striptease of portly...

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – It’s officially a strikeout for Marvel’s The Punisher, a character now featured in not one, not two, but three bad movies of his very own. Dolph Lundgren swung wildly and missed with his “The Punisher” and Thomas Jane nearly connected but went foul with his reboot of the franchise. Now, Ray Stevenson is the latest actor to fail to connect with this legendary character in “Punisher: War Zone,” now available on Blu-Ray.
There’s at least one thing that director Lexi Alexander and writers Nick Santora and Art Marcum & Matt Holloway get right with “War Zone” - they’re not kidding around. Gone is the attempt at a PG-13 like the Thomas Jane & John Travolta version and the hero is finally the dark, relentless killer that he should be.

Director: Lexi Alexander
Writers: Nick Santora and Art Marcum & Matt Halloway
Cinematographer: Steve Gainer
Starring: Ray Stevenson, Dominic West, Julie Benz, Wayne Knight, Colin Salmon
Studio/Run Time: Lionsgate, 107 mins.
The main villain for Punisher: War Zone is nicknamed “Jigsaw” due to his face’s new appearance following an encounter with Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. His face is composed of a bunch of ugly strips of skin thrown together to create an even more hideous whole. It’s a particularly apt metaphor for the movie as well. Not only is Jigsaw's mangled exterior almost exactly the same as the origin for Batman’s Twoface, it’s also indicative of how the film itself is composed from many of the lousier parts of every movie War Zone wishes it could be. It’s a jigsaw puzzle, except none of the pieces fit together. To be just a little more blunt,...
