The making of Rambo III had a tumultuous production that saw numerous firings and hirings, with some, like director Peter MacDonald, making out far better than his predecessor, Russell Mulcahy, whose canning gave the second unit director a shot at helming his first feature. But Mulcahy was far from being the only production member who was sent home…
In an excerpt (via Vanity Fair) from the new book The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage, Peter MacDonald recalled stepping in for Rambo III after Mulcahy miscast several Russian troops, which lead Sylvester Stallone called “third-rate male models” and “two dozen blond, blue-eyed pretty boys that resembled rejects from a surfing contest.”
But it wasn’t just adults that got to Stallone. In one of the more amusing anecdotes from the set of Rambo III, Peter MacDonald recalled an instance where one child...

There's a saying that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. That was certainly the case for "Rambo III" director Peter MacDonald. A bizarre series of events led to a break that resulted in his directorial debut on a movie starring one of Hollywood's biggest action stars, Sylvester Stallone.
"First Blood" was the first film in the "Rambo" franchise, debuting in 1982. The movie examines the mistreatment of veterans and their struggle to reintegrate into society. The sequel, "Rambo: First Blood Part II," looks at the Vietnam War Pow/Mia dispute. By the time "Rambo III" came along, it seems nobody was quite sure what it...

Tom Cruise and Tim Curry in Ridley Scott’s Legend (1985) will be available on Blu-ray September 28th from Arrow Video
This is such stuff as dreams are made of. This is Legend.
After changing the face of science fiction cinema forever with Alien and Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott turned his visionary eye to the fantasy genre, teaming with writer William Hjortsberg (Angel Heart) to create a breathtaking cinematic fairytale with one of the screen’s most astonishingly rendered depictions of Evil. In an idyllic, sun-dappled forest, the pure-hearted Jack (Tom Cruise) takes his true love Princess Lili (Mia Sara) to see a pair of unicorns frolicking at the forest’s edge. Little do they know, however, that the Lord of Darkness has dispatched his minions to capture the unicorns and sever their horns so that he may plunge the world into everlasting night.

Giannetto De Rossi tragically, has left us, as a result of the same plague that has cut short the lives of many. He leaves behind a mammoth filmography which, with roughly 163 films, contains plenty of contradictions and surprises and further outlines the career of a true independent, a bona fide iconoclast, and the third generation of a family to leave a lasting mark on the film industry, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Camillo De Rossi, considered by many historians Italy’s first make-up artist, and his father, Alberto De Rossi. Giannetto, however, will be the first De Rossi to delve deep into the world of practical special effects, and his legacy lives on in the work of one of his two daughters, Lorella. To truly put into perspective the incredibly multi-faceted career of this giant, let us briefly go through a handful of the many diverse directors he...

Before he mesmerized people with his distinctive voice and words as lead singer of The Smiths, Morrissey was just another teenager trying to find his place in the world. The unauthorized story pitched in England Is Mine looks a wee bit familiar, but it's told with a good degree of urgency and impact in the new trailer for the film, which is heading to cinemas in the UK on 4 August. Jack Lowden stars as the young legend in the making, with Jodie Comer, Peter MacDonald, Laurie Kynaston, and Jessica Brown Findlay among the supporting cast. Mark Gill directed. England Is Mine will serve as the closing night presentation at the Edinburgh Film Festival on Sunday. Watch the trailer below, and mourn for your youth....

Don’t let the ugly Italian poster art on the disc box throw you — The Internecine Project is a clever plot-driven murder tale in an espionage vein that gathers a string of B+ stars from the early 1970s for ninety minutes of suspense. It’s not the kind of suspense that makes you wonder what’s going to happen next, but the kind that points to a finish that we know will employ a big surprise, a killer-diller last-minute twist. Or three.

Former Um staffer Will Chapman is currently recovering from a successful transplant operation.
Chapman created the Gracious Gift campaign to promote the need for people to sign up to the organ donor registry while on the waiting list for a double transplant.
The campaign was amplified by Um, which orchestrated a bid to encourage media owners to donate space after sister agency McCann re-cut Chapman’s Tvc and created an accompanying online presence.
Chapman was an account executive at Um until he became too ill to work. He told Mumbrella that he would continue the campaign: “I have seen far too many of my friends in their 20′s miss out, and the solution is there.”
He added a note to the Gracious Gift Facebook page today which reads:
“A week ago today my life was saved by a beautiful organ donor and their loved ones decision to honour their wishes.

The academy expanded the potential pool of voters for Best Live Action Short beyond those who attended one of the four official screenings in Los Angeles and the two in New York. For the first time, those who saw these five films as part of the Shorts International program that unspooled at 200 theaters nationwide were eligible to vote. The lone American entry is "Time Freak" from director Andrew Bowler and producer Gigi Causey. This 10-minute comic caper is about a neurotic inventor who corrects his past mistakes by creating a time machine. The shorter of the two Irish films is "Pentecost," a wry comedy-drama from Peter MacDonald that pits a lad's love of football against his obligations as an altar boy in a snappy 11 minutes. Organisers of the Tribeca Film Festival have announced this year's line-up of 60 short films, 22 of which are world premieres.
The international festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal and real-estate investor Craig Hatkoff to help revitalise Manhattan's Tribeca neighbourhood following the 9/11 terrorist attack.
The 2011 event - presented by founding sponsor American Express - will run from April 20 to May 1. The 60 shorts represent 21 countries, including the UK, and feature stars from around the globe.
In a new development this year, the recipient of the Tff Best Narrative Short award will qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Oscars without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with Academy rules.
The short film program, drawn from 2,862 submissions, will be presented in eight thematic programs, which are detailed below.
There is a broad spectrum of styles and storytelling, from zombies taking over Manhattan to the humanitarian effort in Haiti.

Read more: 'The King's Speech' actor Colin Firth has fond memories of Ireland Read more: Mark Wahlberg’s ‘The Fighter’ gets seven Oscar nominations Historians and Scottish tartan experts were left speechless and angered by the fact that Colin Firth’s character in “The King’s Speech,” King George, is wearing an Irish kilt on his way to Balmoral to visit his brother. The tartan he wore is believed to be from Co. Kerry and only dates back to 1997. Momentum Pictures told the “Evening Herald” in Dublin that they were unable to identify the tartan. A spokesperson said Jenny Beavan, the costume designer, only had two months to source historically accurate clothes for the movie. Peter MacDonald, a kilt historian and head of research for the Scottish Tartans Authority, said, “They just get things spectacularly wrong. “The kilt is not of any design I recognize which would have...

This 1998 film casts the Muscles from Brussels as a boxer-turned-French Foreign Legion recruit plunged into the fascinating Rif war – so how did it end up being so boring?
Director: Peter MacDonald
Entertainment grade: E
History grade: B
The French Foreign Legion is a special unit of the French army, open to all nationalities.
In the 1920s, it served in the Rif war, fought primarily between Spain and the Moroccan Berbers.
Style
The film opens in a swanky nightclub in 1920s Marseilles. There are bejewelled flappers, Brylcreemed men in penguin suits, and a troupe of giggling dancers showing their knickers during the cancan. It's a cliche, but lavishly produced and passably authentic. Much better than you might expect from the DVD cover, which makes the film look like it was shot in someone's basement. Legionnaire, with a budget of $35m, was in 1998 thought to be the most expensive film ever to go straight to video.

As the remake train continues to roll this one shouldn't come as much of a surprise as the title of the film alone tells us this one never ends. However, since Warner Bros. isn't making another sequel to 1984's The NeverEnding Story and in fact is planning on reboot, doesn't that sort of seem like cheating? Personally I have no interest in a remake of this film as it was probably my favorite film growing up. I must have watched The NeverEnding Story on HBO close to one hundred times, I just couldn't get enough of it. The fantasy film centered on a young boy who discovers an extraordinary storybook-and the fantastical world within its pages. The boy's life increasingly became intertwined with the plot of the novel, in which a hero in the land of Fantasia must save the universe on behalf of an empress. Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire,...

Bernie Mac, a Golden Globe nominated comic actor known for his roles in “The Bernie Mac Show” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” films, died of complications from pneumonia Saturday in a Chicago area hospital. He was 50.

During the ‘90s, Mac took on several minor roles in feature films, including “Friday,” “Get on the Bus” and “How to Be a Player.”
In 2001, Mac starred as Frank Catton alongside George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh’s remake of “Ocean’s Eleven.” He reprised this role in 2004’s “Ocean’s Twelve” and last year’s sequel “Ocean’s Thirteen.”
