Jackie Chan is a legend, the actor has forged his career mastering the genre of action comedy making his way into Hollywood. However, the actor also has faced certain roadblocks in some of his movies as they were not so impressive both at the box office and critical perspective.
Jackie Chan’s The Medallion
It is hard to walk past bumpy roads, Chan’s The Medallion faced a similar fate but it was primarily due to the director, Gordon Chan failing to recognize one fatal mistake. So, despite Chan being on board, the movie met with fatal doom.

During his press tour for John Wick 4, Keanu Reeves was asked about the two “martial arts legends” in Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sanada he got to work with in the film and made a point of adding Scott Adkins to this list. These three, he said, were “real martial artists” (as opposed to himself, a “movie martial artist”), and asserted that “Adkins’ technique, his passion, is on another level.”
While that was high praise indeed from cinema’s current bloodied action franchise king, for the legions of international fans Adkins has amassed in the two decades he’s been spin-kicking, backflipping and acrobatically whooping ass on screen, it was no more than he deserved. Across some 60-plus titles, the Brit has shown off both his prowess in more martial arts disciplines than most people have heard of — including Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, Ninjitsu, Capoeira, Krav Maga, Wushu, Muay Thai, Kung Fu,...

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.
The previous announcement unveiled a stacked horror lineup that includes headiners Evil Dead Rise and opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
In addition, they revealed several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky.
It turns out, the programming team isn’t finished!
SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Born in New Zealand to a family of Chinese doctors, action maven Roseanne Liang describes herself as a “classic immigrant-child overachiever” who’d never questioned that she was destined to become a doctor until she got into medical school.
She deferred her acceptance for a year and decided to take classes that aligned more closely with her personal interests. “I was obsessed with Pixar and computer animation, so I did computer science and film theory,” says Liang, whose “Shadow in the Cloud” blends CG gremlins with a feminist action hero.
A big fan of Weta, Liang watches “Terminator 2” every year and dreams of directing a James Cameron-esque extravaganza.
Upon discovering her passion, she switched tracks and pursued a master’s in film. In school, “I was writing vampire and action movies,” she says, but at the advice of a professor, “I took a detour into moviemaking that was more accessible to me,...

Starting out as an actor feeling the sting of racism and ignorance in Hollywood, Bruce Lee rose to fame as he moved back into his home country to star in some of the most influential martial arts films in the world. Whether it is “The Big Boss”, “The Way of the Dragon”, “Fist of Fury” or “Game of Death”, Lee has left an undeniable mark in the action and martial arts genre. Thanks to his on-screen presence, his unique fighting technique along with his definition of a protagonist have become parts of pop culture reaching as far as Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 2” or Sion Sono’s “Tokyo Tribe”. The finale of “Enter the Dragon” alone is perhaps one of the most visually stunning sequences in action cinema.

Woochi: The Demon Slayer begins very mythically in 1509 with a trio of Taoist wizards (a Korean three stooges) accidentally releasing an army of shape-shifting goblins, losing the magic flute that can seal them away, and generally ruining the life of the Archgod who’d just spent 3000 days sealing the goblins away.
Gang Dong-Won plays the title character of Jeon Woo Chi whose quest is to become the most powerful wizard in Korea, no matter if he upsets his master or the King. Woochi is aided in his adventures by dog turned human (and sometimes horse) Chorangyi, played with great comedic skills by Yoo Hae-Jin. Woochi ends stumbling upon the prophetic pipe and through the manipulations of demon hunting wizard Hwadam, he and his dog end up sealed within scrolls for 500 years.

Ip Man 2, from Cine Asia, is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man’s main hurdles are his reduced circumstances, British oppression, and rivalry from other martial arts practitioners, including the local Hung Ga master Hung Chun-nam, as played by Sammo Hung.

The 126 minute, 1993 film is presented in 16:9 widescreen, with both a 2.0 Cantonese and 5.1 English soundtrack, and optional English subtitles. Special features consist of an audio commentary from Hong Kong cinema expert Bay Logan, and interviews with director and fight choreographer Corey Yuen, and writer Jeff Lau.

This was Chang Cheh’s first film not featuring the “Venom Mob,” but he substituted them with gusto, by presenting ninjas, the animosity between China and Japan, and Cheng Tien Chi.
Chief Hong, leader of a martial arts school, once more challenges his archrival, Yuan Zeng, to a tournament between the two schools, for the title of martial arts master. Hong’s school has been losing for quite some time, and this time is not an exception. However, when all his students are defeated, he calls in a samurai from Japan to fight for his school. The samurai wins against his opponent and forces him to commit suicide, only to face the same fate in his next duel. Before he dies though, he asks Chief Hong to contact an allied ninja clan. Furthermore, as he warns Yaun Zeng that his and his students’ end is near, he manages to poison him.

A turn towards horror
During the 80’s, Shaw Brothers have realized that they could not operate just by releasing scores of kung fu films, and decided to turn towards the horror genre. One of their most successful productions was “Hex”, which even spawned a couple of sequels.
A terrible man leads to a terrible act
Chan Sau-ying is a woman facing terrible issues. She suffers from consumption and Chun-yu, her husband is a despicable man who gambles, drinks and even beats his wife, at least when he is not torturing the servants, who eventually leave the house. Lady Chan is desperate for something that will change her life, and her wish comes true when a young girl named Yi-wah asks to work in the house.
After a series of violent episodes with her husband, the two of them manage to drown him into a large jar and drop his body into a pond.

Sometimes you hear a piece of news so mind bogglingly stupid, you wonder how these people ever got into the movie industry and made a name for themselves. Up to the plate steps Brett Ratner. At a screening of Rush Hour in La over the weekend, he revealed during the ensuing Q&A that he wants to remake Enter The Dragon. Now, if someone like Gareth Evans had said that, you'd entertain the idea for a few seconds, mulling over how cool Iko Uwais would look taking down someone in a room of mirrors, before dismissing the idea, because really no one should ever go near that movie. There are some things that should be beyond the reach of present day Hollywood and Bruce Lee's seminal movie, a film that genuinely changed cinema, is one of those few gems. Ratner wouldn't get into specifics, only indicating that he wants...

Breaking: While Hollywood studios and exhibitors endlessly spar over shortening the window between theatrical and home viewing on feature films, you just knew that someone was going to take a bona fide movie, bypass theaters and go right to home viewing. Not surprisingly, it’s Netflix, already a disruptive force with series including House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. The pay service has just contracted with The Weinstein Company’s Harvey Weinstein to release its first major feature film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend. Sort of a sequel to the Ang Lee-directed 2000 martial arts epic that won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the film will premiere exclusively on Netflix, and it will simultaneously have a berth in IMAX theaters. The release is August 28, 2015.

The Film
Dispatched to the front line of the Korean civil war in January 1953, Kang Eun-pyo (Shin Ha-kyun) is on a mission to investigate the suspicious death of an officer and hunt out a potential communist spy. But as he begins to fight alongside the ‘Alligator’ unit his perception of the war and the divisions between the North and the South crumbles.
Director Jang-hoon, who impressed greatly with last year’s Lkff offering Secret Reunion, returns to familiar territory with a film that mines the complex and damaging effect of this divided country. Much like Secret Reunion the overarching message from Jang-hoon is that regardless of whether you’re from the North or the South of Korea you are still just another human being. This story of Koreans fighting Koreans over a symbolically important but ultimately pointless and tiny piece of land, Aerok Hill, also effectively taps into the absurdity and brutality of war.

Bey Logan's new Reel East Youtube channel is screening an alternate version of the classic Jet Li vs Donnie Yen fight scene from Zhang Yimou's 2002 martial arts masterpiece Hero. Needless to say, it looks brilliant. And for those of you haven't seen Hero, here's the synopsis: In ancient China during the Warring States Period, a nameless prefect of a small jurisdiction arrives at the Qin state's capital city to meet the king of Qin, who has survived an attempt on his life by the assassins Long Sky, Flying Snow, and Broken Sword, and therefore forbidden visitors closer than 100 paces to his throne. 'Nameless' claims that he had slain the three assassins and he displays their weapons before the king, who allows Nameless to sit...

Most active in previous years due to his work with UK film label Hong Kong Legends or, in more recent times, as the head of Dragon Dynasty for The Weinstein Company, Logan in 2011 was doing the rounds for the first time as a director. Logan's directorial debut feature Snowblade was just gearing up at the time and he was working the market hall with leading lady Sable Yu at his side. Twitch contributor Frederic Ambroisine caught up with Yu for a lengthy video interview shortly after the market closed and you can now watch the complete interview below. Photo by Thomas...

Shaolin’s first third introduces us to a rather unpleasant character, Hou Chieh (Andy Lau), a warlord who is attempting to seize power through violent conquest. He’s pretty ruthless and is happy to sanction and participate in violent acts against even the peaceful monks who inhabit the Shaolin Temple that provides the film’s central location.
Following an unexpected turn of events though he is stripped of his power, his daughter dies, in a rather brutal but somewhat melodramatic scene, and his wife leaves him. Forced to question his life choices Hou Chieh spends the remainder of the film going through a ‘spiritual’ transformation, aided by his entry into the Shaolin Temple and his study of martial arts and Buddhism there.
With the endorsement of the actual Shaolin monastery, something that is now legally necessary in order to use the name, Shaolin is a film that certainly appears to...

To summarise the plot of Woochi: The Demon Slayer in anything approaching a succinct style is incredibly difficult. At just over two hours, and a little flabby at that, Woochi manages to contain enough plot for a number of blockbuster fantasy action adventures rather than just one. Beginning far, far in the past the film sets up the central character of Jeon Woo-chi (Dong-won Kang), an arrogant and mischievous wizard, and a number of auxiliary characters before flying forwards in time to a point where a number of them are still alive whilst a couple have been transported via magical paintings. That’s just scratching the surface though as there are also the villainous animal demons/goblins, an ultimately villainous character (who shall not be revealed here), three wizards in religious ‘disguise’, a dog-in-human skin sidekick, an intertemporal love interest, a film within the film and so, so much more.

I’m a little late on this one, but since the 30-second teaser trailer for fight cinema expert Bey Logan’s upcoming action flick “Snowblade” is so freaking cool, I suppose it really doesn’t matter. Better later than never, right? In addition to assisting Dragon Dynasty bring important kung fu flicks to North America, Mr. Logan has made a name for himself covering martial arts films for several magazines, and now he’s taking that knowledge and applying it to his own action-packed production. Although “Snowblade” is still filming, that hasn’t stopped this promising filmmaker from providing curious parties with a snazzy little teaser. Not surprisingly, I really like what I see. Woochi The Demon Slayer
Stars: Gang Dong-Won, Kim Yoon-Suk, Yoo Hae-Jin, Lin Soo-Jung | Written and Directed by Choi Dong-Hoon
Woochi The Demon Slayer begins very mythically in 1509 with a trio of Taoist wizards (a Korean three stooges) accidentally releasing an army of shape-shifting goblins, losing the magic flute that can seal them away, and generally ruining the life of the Archgod who’d just spent 3000 days sealing the goblins away.

IP Man 2
Stars: Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Darren Shahlavi, Huang Xiaming | Action direction by Sammo Hung | Directed by Wilson Yip
Ip Man 2 is the latest DVD release from Cine Asia, and is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip & Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.

Encino - One of the joys of life is not in the getting, but the ability to give. For the longest time I thought that sentiment was bullshit. It sounded more like the excuse of plague carrier. How can giving a trophy be better than receiving it? I found myself overblissed while handing hardware to a certain star.
In case you tuned in late to the Icon Celebration special on the Dumont network, that was me on the podium announcing that 2011’s Spirit of Bob Crane Award winner was Charlie Sheen. Tears of joy were shed on the trophy that’s a bronzed Sony Portable camera from ‘77. Who knew Charlie was capable of emotion - especially anyone who bought the DVD of Navy Seals.
Charlie continues the legacy of the late great of Bob Crane. Both starred in completely absurd sitcoms. Crane played Col. Hogan on Hogan’s Heroes. We...

From James Cameron to Robert Rodriguez, Michael Biehn has been in some great genre films. Terminator. Aliens. The Abyss. Tombstone. Planet Terror. Now, Biehn is directing his first genre film in The Victim, as well as playing Topher Grace’s dad in the 1980s sex comedy, Take Me Home Tonight from Universal. Killer Film catches up with Michael and his new projects. Read on!
Jon: IMDb says you co-directed Blood Bond, so what made you want to get back behind the camera for The Victim?
Michael Biehn: I wouldn’t say I co-directed Blood Bond. What happened was Bey Logan wanted my help on the film he was producing. So I said yes, and flew over to Hong Kong. I think he wanted a “name” to center the film on, but it wasn’t SAG affiliated. When it came to post, I still wasn’t paid, and I didn...

Pasadena - Forget the AFI Top 10 list of Best TV shows. Why should care about TV since they are the American Film Institute? This is kind like the American Diabetic Prevention Society’s Top 10 Favorite Sugary Candy Bars list. Or Bravo’s Top 10 Hunting Shows. Or Madd’s Best 10 Drinks to Mess You Up. Or Charlie Sheen’s Top 10 Things You Can Do Without Involving Hookers and Blow. If they care about TV that much, shouldn’t they be the Aftvi? But they are a pack of List Whores over at AFI with their 100 Years a 100 Stupid Lists press releases.
Why does critic or critic group have to tell you the Best or Worst of the Year? Party Favors is proud to announce the Meh Awards for the 10 TV shows that didn’t work for me in 2010. They weren’t the most pathetic things on TV, but made me lose interest in watching them.
