The 27th Sonoma International Film Festival (March 20-24), as always, leaned into wine and food with the sold-out opening night U.S. premiere of Thomas Napper’s “Widow Clicquot” (Vertical Entertainment), starring Haley Bennett as the woman who saves the legendary winemaker’s legacy. The wine country film festival drew its highest audience attendance to date with a robust film slate programmed by artistic director Carl Spence (working with Executive Director Ginny Krieger), in his second year, including upcoming specialty fare like Luc Besson’s “DogMan” (Briarcliff Entertainment) starring Caleb Landry Jones in an incendiary performance, and Sony Pictures Classics’ raucous comedy “Wicked Little Letters,” starring Olivia Colman, along with a smattering of yummy wine and food events.
The five-day festival curated by Spence along with senior programmers Amanda Salazar and Ken Jacobson, showcased more than 100 films. Twenty-five countries were represented in this year’s lineup of 43 narrative features, 16 documentary features,...

Amplify Pictures, the independent television studio behind HBO’s Emmy-winning “100 Foot Wave,” has made a pair of hires. It has tapped Rachel Eggebeen as its chief content officer and Colin King Miller as its chief operating officer. The veteran executives will take founding partnership roles alongside Amplify Pictures CEO Joe Lewis.
“It’s a time of expansion,” Lewis told Variety in an interview. “We’re growing our team and becoming more global.”
At the same time, Amplify has sold a minority stake to Great Mountain Partners. It is understood that the deal values Amplify at $50 million. The funding will be used to back more production of original series of both the unscripted and scripted variety. Great Mountain Partners previous investments include the Oscar-winning film studio A24, branded content producer Rise Studios and the Vuelta Group, a European film studio.

Donald Trump has a new nickname for potential 2024 rival Ron DeSantis. The former president christened the Florida governor “Ron DeSanctimonious” on Saturday during a stop in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, part of a pre-midterm rally blitz on behalf of Republicans.

Menkes — behind “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” — will also get Aff’s Indie Star Award. Previous recipients include Todd Solondz, David Gordon Green, Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman, Rosanna Arquette and John Waters, who came to Poland last year.

Not many filmmakers can boast a 99 Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for their small-scale debut, as Alex Thompson earned with 2019’s “Saint Frances.” Fewer still follow up with an even stronger second act.
Thompson co-wrote “Rounding” with his physician brother Christopher, and their psychological freakout is possessed of an almost visionary intensity. He’s described this film as inspired by the B-movie thrillers he watched on TV as a kid, but that significantly undersells its lingering power.
Indeed, the B-movie moments — ominous threats, manifested demons — are the weaker spots in an otherwise taut and terrifying emotional nightmare.

Following his SXSW winner and Indie Spirit nominee Saint Frances, writer-director Alex Thompson turns to the psychological drama for his next feature Rounding. Starring newcomer Namir Smallwood and Never Rarely Sometimes Always star Sidney Flanigan, the film––set to premiere tonight at Tribeca––was written by Thompson and his brother Christopher, a medical resident himself, and was inspired by his father’s stories of patients at work as a pulmonologist. Ahead of the premiere, we’re delighted to debut an evocative first poster.
Rounding follows driven medical resident James Hayman (Smallwood) who transfers to a rural hospital for a fresh start. There, the demons of his past start to catch up to him when he becomes consumed by the case of young asthma patient Helen Adso (Flanigan). As James’ claims grow increasingly alarming, Helen’s mother is determined to keep the case out of his hands and the hospital administration...

The disturbing British coming-of-age thriller I Start Counting (1970), starring Jenny Agutter, makes its US Blu-ray debut on a pristine remastered Region A disc, loaded with fresh extras, courtesy of boutique label Fun City Editions.
Adapted from the 1966 novel of the same name by Audrey Erskine Lindop, I Start Counting is a welcome relic of its era: it is distinctively late-1960s in its fashions and characterizations, and it is decidedly British in its affectations, despite harboring a rather risque subject matter.

This early gore-horror picture has a remarkable emphasis on human values, believe it or not, with a ‘monster’ that nevertheless is a paragon of loving gentleness. Add Donald Pleasance as a surly, posh-hating police inspector, and the shock value makes the Hammer films of the early ’70s taste like weak tea.

Inspired by James Cameron's The Abyss, the late 80s brought with it a wave of brilliantly cheesy undersea horrors, Ryan writes...
Hollywood studios occasionally have an uncanny knack of announcing almost identical film projects at the same time. In the 1980s, we had rival police dog movies K-9 and Turner And Hooch. The 90s saw the release of rival eruption movies (Dante's Peak and Volcano), opposing killer space rock pictures (Deep Impact and Armageddon) and duelling insect comedies (Antz and A Bug's Life). We provided a detailed run-down on these rival movies back in 2015.

Anytime Paul Thomas Anderson releases a new movie is cause for celebration, but this year doubly so.
Via Jeff Sneider, Eic of The Tracking Board, it was announced yesterday at the Focus Features presentation during Cinema Con that the writer-director’s next film, the yet-to-be-officially-titled collaboration with Daniel Day Lewis about a royal dressmaker in the 1950s, will be released here in the Us on Christmas Day 2017.
No footage was shown and that pesky working title — Phantom Thread — was neither confirmed nor denied, but by all accounts production is going swimmingly and an end-date is in sight. As I mentioned above, the film deals with a dressmaker, played by Day Lewis, but specifically the film “illuminates the life behind the curtain of an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society.” Other members of the cast include Lesley Manville (Secrets & Lies), Richard Graham (Titanic), and Vicky Krieps (Hanna). It wasn’t revealed whether the December 25th release...

It isn’t official yet so take this news with a grain of salt, but according to Variety, Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Midnight Special) is Fox’s top choice to play the character Cable in Deadpool 2. Divisive among fans though it is, David Fincher's 1992 sequel Alien 3 contains the most powerful shots in the whole franchise, Ryan writes.
Producers didn't want to make it. Many fans were outraged by it. To this day, David Fincher won't talk about it. Released in 1992, Alien 3 was a violent and some would say disappointing contrast to James Cameron's triumphant, Reagan-era Aliens.
Where Aliens formed the near-perfect chapter to Alien, reintroducing Sigourney Weaver's Ripley as an emotionally wounded survivor who faces down her inner demons, Alien 3 served as a mercilessly downbeat coda. The treasures that Ripley managed to snatch away from the loathsome aliens at the end of the 1986 sequel - a surrogate daughter in Newt, a faithful partner in Hicks - were eliminated during Alien 3's opening credits. Ripley the triumphant victor was recast as a lonely warrior at the end of her journey.

Gogglebox is pretty epic on a normal night, but throw in some celebrities with our usual favourites and you've got one crazy Nsfw TV show.
In aid of Channel 4's Stand Up To Cancer telethon, that's exactly what we had tonight (October 9) and Twitter was quick to explode with happiness at the presence of one particular celebrity:
1. It's Mr Christian Grey himself - Jamie Dornan. And he isn't keen on Strictly:
Jamie Dornan and Nick Frost on a couch together. Have my dreams come true? lol #Gogglebox #goggleboxcelebrity#su2c
— Samantha Walford (@SammWalford) October 9, 2015
Jamie Dornan on Gogglebox? Yes please
— Louisa. (@xx_Louisa_xx) October 9, 2015
2. Dornan was paired with Nick Frost, prompting some concern for Frost's usual comedy partner Simon Pegg:
Cats are up to something, clearly, but Jamie Dornan is on to them... Celebrity #Gogglebox, 9pm.

Britain's Got Talent continued its exciting semi-final week tonight (May 26) as Old Men Grooving and Jules O'Dwyer and her performing dog Matisse advanced.
The best news came for Jules and her dancing pooch as they actually earned an automatic advancement by topping the public vote, while Old Men Grooving beat Revelation Avenue in a second-place battle.
Dance troupe Groove Thing, contortionist Bonetics, illusionist Michael Late and singer Alison Jiear were given less encouraging news, as they won't be moving on.
We gather reactions to tonight's Britain's Got Talent episode below:
1. The surviving acts have their supporters – and their very famous detractors!

I have an incredibly delightful stop-motion animated short film for you to watch today called Death and the Robot. The animation and character design work that was used to tell this story is superb. This is a dark yet beautiful tale with a hint of light humor. Here's a brief summary:
Bored of their stagnant existence, two lonely souls leave their safe havens behind and discover one another, yielding an everlasting legacy that will forever change their dying world.
The short was directed, animated and conceived by Austin Taylor, from a script written by co-producer Alexander Thompson. The film is about a year old, but I’ve never seen it until I came across it on Firstshowing. I’m glad that I did, because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you do, too.

Next in line to inherit the throne of Royal films is Diana. The film takes audiences into the private realm of one of the world’s most iconic and inescapably public women – the Princess of Wales, Diana (two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts) — in the last two years of her meteoric life.
On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of her sudden death, acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel (the Oscar-nominated Downfall) explores Diana’s final rite of passage: a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews, “Lost,” The English Patient), the human complications of which reveal the Princess’s climactic days in a compelling new light. Diana is in select theaters now.
As long as filmmakers have been bringing the lives of England’s Kings and Queens to the silver screen have moviegoers been going to the cinemas to be schooled in British Monarchy.

The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.
Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.
Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.
You also get Ridley Scott providing an audio commentary so it will be very interesting...

Perhaps it was just a bad dream. Perhaps writer-director Michael Mann didn’t really veer from his crime-film comfort zone after 1981’s terrific Thief (an entrancing amalgam of seventies grit and eighties gloss), only to end up in supernatural phantasmagoriaville with 1983’s much-maligned period horror film The Keep. Perhaps it would have been preferable (especially for that part of us that futilely demands life and its associated arts to move in easily classifiable straight lines) to jump directly to 1986’s Manhunter, the first cinematic swipe at Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter mythos—a luridly antiseptic bit of genius that Chicago Reader reviewer Pat Graham incisively likened to “white noise” and “electronic snow.” (The critic’s memorable “am I recommending this or not?” punchline: “Just try not to nod off…”)
Appropriate, then, that The Keep begins in some tenebrous fugue state between waking and dreaming, between sound (ominous thunderclaps) and image...

Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.
Alien:
How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.
Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

Let’s level with each other: you’ve already seen all of the (or at least the first two) Alien films, and have formed an opinion roughly in alignment with the rest of society that the first two in the series are excellent, but that the latter two were largely ruined by a combination of repetitiveness and studio interference. You probably already have the Alien Quadrilogy, and have ample resources to find out what new supplemental materials are featured on this release (and they are legion). But as much as anything, you don’t need me to tell you what each of these films is about, what characters appear in any of them, and why you should go out of your way to see any of them. The Alien franchise is established in a way that few are, with its rules, aesthetic, and central themes renowned to those who have...
