Brian De Palma's "Carrie" was the film that defined a generation. Its blend of coming-of-age themes, fantastical magic, and slasher-style bloodshed makes it a genre-bending film that time just can't seem to forget.
The 1976 horror tells the story of a sheltered girl who lives under her obsessively religious mother's tyrannical rule, a dictatorship made all the worse by the onset of Carrie's period. Her mother's frenzy combined with a cruel prank at the prom pushes the shy young girl to a mental break, complete with telekinetic powers. The Stephen King adaptation launched some incredibly notable careers, including John Travolta, who plays high school bully Billy Nolan. Sadly, not all of the cast has lived to see the end of 2023, including Piper Laurie, whose performance as Carrie's mother earned her one of three Oscar nominations in her lifetime.

“Sam & Kate” is a family affair, which is essentially the entire conceit for the film’s existence. Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek play Bill and Tina, while Jake Hoffman and Schuyler Fisk (Spacek’s daughter with production designer Jack Fisk) play their respective kids, Sam and Kate. It’s the story of young adults and their challenging relationships with their quirky aging parents, fumbling toward a kind of grace in spite of their pasts.
The appeal of the film is its gimmick: watching two legendary actors who defined New Hollywood in the 1970s playing parents to their own children and the unique chemistry that comes from that. It also helps that the kids look a lot like their parents.
But Hoffman and Fisk aren’t carbon copies of their parents, and neither have their careers. Both have been acting since childhood, but Hoffman has gone the indie route, having directed the feature “Asthma,...

"Been a long time since I've been out like this." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a family comedy titled Sam & Kate, opening in select theaters this November. Described as a "life-affirming family dramedy" starring Oscar winners Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek - truly a family affair, art imitates life with the father / son casting of Dustin & Jake Hoffman and the mother / daughter casting of Sissy & Schuyler Fisk. When Sam (the younger Hoffman) returns to his small town to care for his ailing father, he soon finds himself falling for a local woman, Kate. Simultaneously, his father begins finding love with Kate's mother. But both couples must confront their past in order to make their new love work for the future. The cast also includes Henry Thomas, Tyler Labine, Elizabeth Faith Ludlow, Dylan McNamara, and Elizabeth Becka. This looks sweet and fun, but also a film you'll forget as soon as it's over.

A producer on “Rust” is backing another independent film, “Sam & Kate,” starring Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, which is set to begin production early next year.
Ryan Smith is helping to finance the film, which is set to shoot in Thomasville, Ga., starting in mid-February. So is his new film, .The Best of Me. one of the best in Sparks. oeuvre? Or is it horrible? I sat down with the author to find out if he envisions a project cinematically while writing it, how is the movie compared to his novel, and how he.s the current king of love! Take a look at my fun but short (they.re running out of time!) interview.

Based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks, The Best of Me tells the story of Dawson and Amanda, two former high school sweethearts who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart, when they return to their small town for the funeral of a beloved friend.

Actress Sissy Spacek was a proud mum on Saturday - her eldest daughter Schuyler Fisk got married.
The singer/actress, who appeared in Channing Tatum's Dear John, wed artist Chapman Bullock in Charlottesville, Virginia, where Fisk was raised.
According to UsMagazine.com, the couple tied the knot during a low-key ceremony in front of a small group of family and friends.
The 29 year old is the daughter of The Help star Spacek and her production designer husband of nearly 38 years, Jack Fisk.

She’s a six-time Oscar nominee with forty years of films to her credit, but Sissy Spacek has always made it clear she’s never wanted to be queen of the Hollywood prom.
From her terrifying turn as Stephen King's anti-heroine in 1976’s "Carrie" to her down-to-the-mannerisms take on Loretta Lynn in 1980’s "Coal Miner’s Daughter," Spacek’s quest for unconventionality has made her one of the most formidable actresses of a generation. As it turns out, that non-conformity extends to her personal life as well: at the height of her career, she and husband Jack Fisk fled Hollywood for a farmhouse in rural Virginia, where they raised daughters Schuyler Fisk, now 29, and Madison Fisk, 23.
While there’s been no shortage of Spacek onscreen in recent years (check out her hilariously off-kilter Mrs. Walters in the 2011 smash "The Help," if you haven’t already), the 62-year-old star has...

One of my favorite parts of the Oscars this year was Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis coming out on stage dropping cymbals. It wasn't wildly hilarious, but it was one of the better parts in an otherwise dull evening. Oh, and the part where the guy who played Kip in Orange County received an award for best adapted screenplay. Do you remember his conversation with Schuyler Fisk in the movie? "I want to be a writer. Pack your rain gear and we’ll take a trip to the Northeast, Seattle to be exact. It’s the home of alternative culture and mecca of most quirkiness. And our guide is one of the most off-beat film directors, Gus Van Zant of My Own Private Idaho fame. For a bit of a change of pace he’s presenting a boy-meets-girl story. They do meet “cute”, but these two young people in Restless are far from the typical movie couple.
We first meet the shy, sullen teenage boy Enoch ( Henry Hopper ) as he “crashes” the memorial service of a complete stranger. He sits quietly in the back and after the service, he returns to the big, gloomy house he shares with his aunt ( Jane Adams ). Restless, auteur Gus Van Sant's lastest pic about teens who fall in love and meet the ghost of a Japanese amikaze fighter pilot (I have no idea), stars Mia Wasikowska (who I think of as mini-Carey Mulligan) and Henry Hopper. The movie hits theaters on October 21.

Director: Gus Van Zant Writer: Jason Lew Starring: Henry Hopper, Mia Wasikowska, Ryo Kase, Schuyler Fisk, Lusia Strus, Jane Adams “Let me get this straight,” one character says to Enoch (Henry Hopper), the teenage hero of Restless. “You’re a funeral crashing dropout with no car and a dead friend?” Yep, Enoch’s path is a strange and difficult one. As Gus Van Sant’s new film opens, Enoch is a brooding teen who, like Bud Cort in Harold and Maude, likes to don his best suit and overcoat and slip into funerals and memorial services. As if that weren’t enough, Enoch’s constant companion and confidant is a dead World War II kamikaze pilot named Hiroshi (Ryo Kase), who also plays a mean game of Battleship. Then one day Enoch meets the delightful, impish Annabel Cotton (Mia Wasikowska) at a memorial service. Annabel, like Ruth Gordon’s Maude,...

All too often, when a movie can be described as sentimental, it's usually not a compliment. Gus Van Sant's latest film Restless however is a welcome reminder that death-themed films needn't rely on the suffocating pedestrian solemnity so common in heartfelt fare.
A solemn young man (Henry Hopper) meets an effervescent young woman (Mia Wasikowska) at a funeral of all places. After a few more chance encounters, the pair finds they both have a fascination with death, but neither obsession is quite what it seems; Enoch is trapped by his past, and Annabel has embraced her future. For a while they have a whimsically sweet present, as they humor each other's morbid fantasies with a faith in one another rarely seen in real life, let alone on the jaded silver screen. But it starts seeming less healthy and more a folie à deux to Annabel's protective sister (Schuyler Fisk...

Chicago – Gus Van Sant’s “Restless” is an undeniably twee and hipster film that will annoy some viewers about as much as bad performance art, but I found the film’s commitment to a unique tone and world view refreshing as so few directors even know what those words mean. It may not be grounded enough to be emotionally effective, but another strong performance from the stellar Mia Wasikowska and a consistency to its vision make “Restless” worth a look.
“Restless” is a film about two people facing death. It is not just an unknown quantity in their lives, as it is for so many people. It is something that has forever impacted one of them and will soon take another. In many ways, Jason Lew’s script feels like an attempt to offer a different take on the common love-through-illness tale. It’s like “Dying Young” as remade by The Decemberists.

Title: Restless Director: Gus Van Sant Starring: Henry Hopper, Mia Wasikowska, Ryo Kase, Jane Adams, Schuyler Fisk Filmmaker Gus Van Sant, even at 59 years old, looks like the sort of guy who should be wearing jeans, a T-shirt and a hoodie. In face, body language and spirit, he retains a certain boyishness — perhaps in some small way infused, throughout the years, by his thematic preoccupation with unconventional romance and coming-of-age stories, and the idea of surrogate family. “Restless,” his latest effort behind the camera, and the first since Sean Penn scored a Best Actor Oscar for “Milk,” treads this same familiar ground, but to mostly pleasurable if still...

When Restless opened Un Certain Regard in Cannes this spring, most critics groaned and moved on to their next screening. Some, though, such as Manohla Dargis in the New York Times, weren't ready to dismiss it entirely, and Daniel Kasman found a few kind words for cinematographer Harris Savides. Still, having screened in Toronto and now set for a limited release in the States tomorrow, Restless is being slapped with another round of pans.
Nick Schager in Slant: "Gus Van Sant's cinema, which of late has been fixated on immersing viewers in particular times and spaces, takes a detour into excruciating quirkland with Restless, a work of off-putting bathos and lovey-dovey nonsense that inspires not just the titular agitation, but stomach-cramping, eye-rolling antipathy. Once you've seen Gus Van Sant's Restless, you realize the distributor shuffle the film has done over the past several months says a lot about what kind of film it is. Is it a movie better suited as a specialty film housed at Sony Pictures Classics, or is it more of a slightly comical, but more serious romantic drama for Columbia Pictures? Sony chose to hand it over to the former after it originally had a January release date with the latter. Do they have it figured out?

Gus Van Sant's new film Restless marks Schuyler Fisk's return to the big screen after five long years. Just what has she been doing with her time? Making some damn good music, that's what. Her most recent album Blue Ribbon Winner has become an iPod mainstay of mine due to standout songs like "If You Were Gone" and "Zombie." Luckily, the actress/singer/songwriter was kind enough to lend me some time to discuss, well, a bunch of things.
