Five years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount is backtracking from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

The financing and production behind Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One's final set pieces were almost as daunting as Tom Cruise's stunt work.
Speaking to Variety, Dead Reckoning cinematographer Fraser Taggart revealed how the movie's motorcycle cliff jump and extended train scenes came together and how Norwegian authorities signed off on the stunts director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise had planned. Having previously filmed Mission: Impossible - Fallout's climactic cliffside fight sequence in Norway, Taggart explained that "the train scene and location needed to work with the motorcycle jump, but we found a railway in Norway from where we were going to shoot the motorcycle jump, and it all worked out." He also acknowledged pre-production safety concerns by the country's government, stating, "No one wants you to go on a national railway and say, 'We're going to fight on top of a train while going through a mountainside.

The news of Tom Cruise setting a “strategic partnership” with Warner Bros. has certain “Top Gun” fans barrel-rolling out of control. Don’t panic, put on your oxygen mask before you attempt to help others — and definitely don’t jump without a chute, because a third “Top Gun” has been in development for a while now, a source told IndieWire.
“Top Gun: Maverick” screenwriter Ehren Kruger is working on the next film in the franchise, according to Puck News. The threequel-creating installment will reunite Cruise with his “Maverick” co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison will be back, and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski is also set to return — either as director (again), or at least to produce.
Paramount Pictures declined comment on this story; a spokesperson for “Top Gun” co-producer Skydance did not immediately respond to our requests for comment.

Tom Cruise can be a divisive figure; we here at JoBlo love the guy but he definitely has his critics, primarily those who hit at his personal life and dealings in Scientology. But if you take a look at any one of his insane stunts – or listen to his tirade against slip-ups during the Covid-19 pandemic that shut down production on Dead Reckoning – you’ll know this guy is the real deal when it comes to making movies. And if you have anything bad to say about the guy’s work ethic, you’ll have to answer to M:i co-star Hannah Waddingham.
Hannah Waddingham, who co-stars in 2025’s sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – which has yet to be officially named, but we feel like the fates might align on this one… – suggested that her views on Tom Cruise changed while working with him on the eighth installment of the M:i franchise.

Hannah Waddingham defends Tom Cruise and has no time for anyone who criticizes him. Mission: Impossible 8 faced multiple setbacks, including the Covid pandemic and strikes, resulting in a three-year delay for the release of Dead Reckoning Part One and a fourth delay for Mission: Impossible 8. The cast of Mission: Impossible 8 includes returning stars Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, and Vanessa Kirby, as well as new additions Nick Offerman, Janet McTeer, Rolf Saxon, and Holt McCallany. The plot and title of the sequel are still unknown.
Tom Cruise has never been too far away from someone who has an issue with the ever-youthful action hero. However, his Mission: Impossible 8 costar, Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, is ready to stand up to anyone who takes issue with the Top Gun star.

Tom Cruise is not without his detractors, but Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham is one person who has no time for any vitriol leveled at the acclaimed actor.
Waddingham has a role in the upcoming sequel Mission: Impossible 8, and this has given her a chance to get to know Cruise. While she's only spent "five intense days" on the set with the actor, that's been enough time for her to develop a sense of friendship and respect for her new co-star. While speaking about Mission: Impossible 8 on ITV's James Martin's Saturday Morning, per The Independent, Waddingham praised how wonderful Cruise had been on the set, and she now has a "real problem" with the actor's haters.
Related Will Tom Cruise Ever Play Iron Man? Rumors persisted long before the launch of the MCU about Tom Cruise taking on the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man, and the buzz has yet to die down.

The mission will remain impossible to see for another year. The eighth “Mission: Impossible” film in the Tom Cruise action series, which is dropping the previously announced “Dead Reckoning Part Two” from its title, has been delayed from 2024 to 2025, as part of a sweeping shift in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming release schedule.
The direct follow-up to this July’s “Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Part Two” was initially scheduled to premiere June 28, 2024, just 11 months after its direct predecessor’s release. It will now be released May 23, 2025, almost a full year after its initial date.
The “Mission: Impossible” sequel faces the most significant delay, but it’s not the only big ticket item on Paramount’s slate to get majorly pushed back. The film takes the release date previously held by a fourth feature film spinoff of the “Spongebob Squarepants” Nickelodeon animated series. Amazon MGM Studios have landed rights to Benjamin Percy’s novella “American Criminal,” with Gavin O’Connor negotiating to direct.
The film, which Hidden Pictures and NeoText will produce, follows a professional thief who, after being apprehended by an FBI agent, is coaxed into infiltrating a violent Midwestern gang with the goal of dismantling them from the inside. However, what the FBI agent doesn’t know is that the thief is also orchestrating the largest – and last – heist of his life.
O’Connor has directed a number of popular and critically acclaimed works, including “Warrior” with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, “The Accountant” with Ben Affleck, “Miracle” with Kurt Russell, and “Tumbleweeds,” which featured an Oscar-nominated turn from Janet McTeer. He most recently retimed with Affleck on 2020’s “The Way Back,” the story of an alcoholic basketball coach.

If there is one thing The Menu is not short on, it’s fabulous performances. Since the film’s release, much praise has been dished out for Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of the film’s protagonist, Margot; Ralph Fiennes has been given stars as the nightmarish Chef Julian Slowik; and of course, 2022’s undisputed breakout performer, Hong Chau, gives cinema’s best line reading of the word “tortillas” in her work as Slowik’s assistant, Elsa. Despite all the acclaim awarded to each of these deserving actors who make up the stellar cast, not enough attention has been given to one of the film’s most subtle but richly complex performances. Without question, The Menu’s most underrated performance is Janet McTeer’s as pretentious food critic Lillian Bloom.

Mission: Impossible 7 director Chris McQuarrie revealed that Dead Reckoning’s A.I. Villain called the Entity went through a design change in order to avoid comparisons to a famous fantasy villain.
Speaking with Empire, McQuarrie shared that the initial design of the Entity was actually red in early cuts of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. However, after a test screening, the audience pointed out the Entity’s resemblance to the Lord of the Rings’ all-knowing Eye of Sauron. "The graphic of the Entity was originally red. And I gave it this twitchy eye movement," he recalled. "People in an earlier friends and family screening said, 'It was like the Eye of Sauron in Lord Of The Rings.' And I thought, 'Well, no, it's not, because the Eye of Sauron doesn't move.' In my mind's eye, it was extremely static."

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie revealed why a major character had to be killed in order to advance Ethan Hunt’s story.
During a podcast interview with Empire, McQuarrie opened up about Rebecca Ferguson’s character Ilsa Faust’s surprising death in Dead Reckoning Part One, confirming that it was something he and Tom Cruise had discussed early on in the development of the project. He explained that the major character’s death served as an "emotional arc" of the seventh installment, which definitely leveled up the story’s stakes. "What really needs to happen in the story is the stakes have to be real, they can't be implied," McQuarrie said. "We have to have the courage to let [Ethan] fail and it has to cost, the mission has to cost, and without that, the villain simply will not have a threat…what you're seeing in...

Emily Brontë's 1847 barn burner of a debut (and final) novel, "Wuthering Heights," has the not unique distinction of being an extraordinary piece of writing without any great screen adaptations to its name. Plenty of great books have been adapted into great films.
But even more great literary adaptations litter the studio rubbish heaps, the victims of crippling executive intervention, directors who took a Coppola-like big swing and missed, and most common of all, filmmakers who didn't take a big swing and ended up with perfectly fine, perfectly flat, one-for-one translations that ultimately leave you feeling the story just should have stayed on the page.
Paramount's 1992 take on "Wuthering Heights" ultimately belongs to that last category. And it's a shame, because the project had so much potential. Mirroring its source author, the film was prolific television director Peter Kosminsky's first theatrical feature (and ended up being his last...

Revivals have been a mainstay of Broadway for decades. But it wasn’t until the 31st ceremony in 1977 that the Tony Awards added a new category honoring these productions. The nominees for the inaugural prize were “Guys and Dolls,” “The Cherry Orchard” and “The Three Penny Opera” with “Porgy and Bess” taking the honors. Other winners over the years included “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Anything Goes,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Gypsy.”
In 1994, the category was divided into best revival of a musical with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” winning the award and “An Inspector Calls” taking home the best revival of a play honor.
This year’s nominees in both categories celebrate the work of Stephen Sondheim, Henrik Ibsen and three landmark black playwrights: August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks and Lorraine Hansberry. Here’s a closer look at this year’s contenders.

Class divides have plagued us almost since the dawn of civilization, since the very first groups of humans separated themselves according to the haves and have-nots. From the caveman with the biggest stick to the CEO with the largest bank account, things really haven't changed all that much. The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Danny DeVito will return to the Broadway stage this October in a new play by Theresa Rebeck called I Need That.
The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor will star alongside his daughter Lucy DeVito and Ray Anthony Thomas in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of what the company describes as “a deeply human new comedy.”
Preview and opening night dates for I Need That at Roundabout’s American Airlines Theatre will be announced later.
The synopsis: Sam (DeVito) doesn’t get out much. Actually, he doesn’t get out at all, opting instead for the safety of his house in the company of his things – his many, many things. But when a notice from the government arrives alerting Sam that he must clean up his property or face eviction, he’s forced to reckon with what’s trash, what’s treasure, and whether we can ever know the difference between the two.

Kaos has been a long-time coming. Netflix first announced it had commissioned this British dark comedy reimagining Greek mythology back in 2018, but the pandemic meant that filming only started last year, and there’s already been one major cast replacement.
And even though we’re no closer to an official release date, the impressive cast list, unique premise and solid production team make Kaos well worthy of your attention.
‘Nothing Is Sacred’ in This Bold Take On Greek Myth
Set over eight one-hour episodes, Kaos is a contemporary reimagining of Greek Mythology exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. The official synopsis describes how six humans will discover they’re part of an ancient prophecy:
“Zeus has a wrinkle. He’s worried it might mean the end of the world and it might. Because on Earth, six humans unaware of their importance or their connection to...

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Hong Chau (“The Whale”), Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), and Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Our odds currently indicate that Bassett (18/5) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Condon (37/10), Curtis (19/5), Hsu (9/2), and Chau (9/2).
For the first time since 2012, all five of the women in this lineup are new to the category. The last instance involved winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help”) and nominees Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”), Jessica Chastain (“The Help”), Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”), and Janet McTeer (“Albert Nobbs”). The current group’s complete Oscars newcomer rate of 80% has become common in recent years, with the same percentage also having applied to the nominees of 2022, 2018, and 2016.

Henrik Ibsen’s world-(in)famous play “A Doll’s House” has not been seen on Broadway in over 25 years, when Janet McTeer led a production under the direction of Anthony Page. Now, into the shoes of legendary character Nora Helmer steps Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, starring in a work adapted by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Amy Herzog and directed by Tony Award nominee Jamie Lloyd. “A Doll’s House” opened March 9 at the Hudson Theatre and will play through June 10, just one day before the Tonys.
Joining Chastain in Ibsen’s form-defining domestic drama about the oppressive gender politics of the so-called private sphere in nineteenth-century Norway are Emmy nominee Arian Moayed as her husband Torvald, Okieriete Onaodowan as the opportunistic Nils Krogstad, Michael Patrick Thornton as the sympathetic Dr. Rank, Jesmille Darbouze as Nora’s old friend Kristine Linde, and Tasha Lawrence as the Helmers’ nanny.

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. This production of “Oklahoma!” previously played Broadway and received eight Tony Award nominations, including wins for Best Revival and Featured Actress...

Con O’Neill, who plays Neil Ackroyd in BBC One’s hit drama Happy Valley, has said his mind was “blown” when he read the script for the season finale.
The last-ever episode of the series aired on Sunday (5 January), in which main character Catherine Cawood (played by Sarah Lancashire) came face-to-face with Tommy Lee Royce (played by James Norton).
In last week’s penultimate episode, fans were left in suspense, concerned that prison escapee Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) might harm Catherine and take his son (and her grandson) Ryan, played by Rhys Connah, off to Spain.
Speaking on Thursday’s episode of This Morning (2 February), O’Neill shared his excitement for the finale.
O’Neill didn’t reveal any spoilers regarding the season finale but admitted that the script blew his mind when he read it.
“It blew my mind,” he said. “Sally [Wainwright, the show’s writer] has written an extraordinary ending to this show.

This article deals with themes of suicide. This article also contains spoilers for The Menu.
Nicholas Hoult's pathetic character in The Menu makes the film's ending truly perfect. Set at Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant located on a remote island, director Mark Mylod's black comedy satirizes the world of fine dining, skewering many of its patrons in the process. The Menu dishes up an all-star ensemble as its collection of diners, including The Queen's Gambit's Anya Taylor-Joy, Encanto's John Leguizamo, and Ozark's Janet McTeer. However, no character receives as much ridicule as Nicholas Hoult's Tyler, a pretentious "foodie" who cares more about having the opportunity to eat at a high-class establishment than he does about anything else.
Nicholas Hoult has received rapturous acclaim for his role as Tyler, especially for his ability to play the character's arrogance and obsession with getting noticed by Hawthorn's Chef Slowik. It...

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for The Menu!
Lillian Bloom's broken emulsion plates in The Menu had a hidden meaning that was cut from the final film. Directed by Mark Mylod, The Menu detailed the story of Chef Julian Slowik, a celebrity chef who invites a select group of esteemed guests to his exclusive restaurant for a one-night-only, culinary experience with a horrific twist. A brilliant cast features, among others, Nicholas Hoult, Anya Taylor-Joy, John Leguizamo, and Janet McTeer, who portrays Lillian Bloom, a food critic who very quickly gets on the wrong side of Slowik and his army of line chefs.
Over the course of The Menu, Chef Slowik is revealed to have gathered his guests on that particular occasion with the intent to kill them all, including his own staff and himself, having grown weary at the state of food culture in the modern-day, and the loss of his passion for cooking.

Recent filmmaking has seen growth in a particular subgenre that, for the sake of brevity, we will call “Eat the Rich.” We meet a bunch of rich people, they are dreadful, and then they are either murdered or exposed, or made to suffer in one way or another. We have seen it in Glass Onion, in Triangle of Sadness, and we have seen it in the anthology series The White Lotus. The message of these stories is invariably that “these are dreadful people and every bad thing that happens to them is something that they deserve.” This article will not speculate on why so many of these stories seem to be emerging at once, nor what issues in the wider world they seek to address. You probably have your theories.

Discover where to watch The Menu, a hit thriller from Mark Mylod, where an isolated, high-class restaurant sets the scene for blistering satirical comedy and Hollywood critique.
What The Menu Is About
In the latest, Mike Mylod film that straddles the genres of horror, comedy, and thriller, a young couple travel to an exclusive restaurant, isolated on a remote island. In charge of the kitchen is the genius Chef Slowik, who is tasked with preparing the most lavish foods imaginable for his guests, but not all is as it seems.
The satirical horror has been reviewed as a searing take not only on the pomp of the upscale restaurant industry, but also on the film industry as a whole with its class-conscious commentary. In fact, some reviewers have gone so far as to suggest that all the characters of The Menu represent a different cog in the Hollywood machine, such...

One deleted scene from The Menu actually explains the mystery behind what made Chef Julian Slowik such a villain. The Menu detailed the story of a select group of guests invited to an extra-special evening of dining at the exclusive restaurant of world-renowned celebrity chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). Slowik's esteemed guests are comprised of the likes of food lover Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), his unexpected guest Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy), the "movie-star" (John Leguizamo), and food critic Lillian (Janet McTeer), each of whom had a hand in Slowik's rise to stardom, and contributed to his growing apathy for the culinary industry.
While glimpses of Slowik's backstory are revealed throughout The Menu, culminating in him relishing in making one final traditional cheeseburger for Margot, one of The Menu's deleted scenes shared by Comingsoon.net uncovers more about the birth of his world-class restaurant, Hawthorne. The social satire follows a cast of characters played by Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer, Reed Birney, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, who travel to a private island to dine at an exclusive restaurant run by a theatrical celebrity chef (played by Ralph Fiennes), whose sinister plans for his high-paying patrons are slowly revealed with each course. Mylod has also directed numerous episodes of Game of Thrones and Succession.
During a recent interview with Polygon, Mylod talks about what The Menu has in common with his other high-profile work directing episodes of hit HBO shows Game of Thrones and Succession. The Emmy-nominated director boiled it down to a few thematic connections, mainly family and wealth, that unite the three seemingly different works. They are actually more alike than one may think. Following The Menu's release on HBO Max, fans are absolutely mesmerized by Ralph Fiennes as the film's hellish chef. The thriller stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Margot Mills, the guest of Nicholas Hoult's Tyler Ledford to an exclusive restaurant on a private island, where renowned Chef Julian Slowik (Fiennes) prepares an unconventional dining experience. Taylor-Joy and Hoult are joined by an ensemble cast to round out the other guests and staff at the restaurant, including John Leguizamo as a washed-up movie star, Janet McTeer as a snobby food critic, and Hong Chau as Chef Slowik's fiercely loyal maître d’.

Some of this year’s best supporting performances in film didn’t arise from your classic scenery-chewing powerhouse monologues or even a de rigueur prolonged cameo by a stalwart veteran — the kinds of smaller dramatic roles that net major industry awards. For every heartrending speech in Women Talking, The Whale and The Fabelmans, there are still dozens of biting one-liners and sidesplitting visual gags in a handful of 2022’s strongest comedies that should not go ignored. Comedies are often honored for their screenplays, but it takes distinctive talent to bring those vibrant pages to life.

Mark Mylod’s The Menu, from a script by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, has become one of Searchlight Pictures’ best success stories since its release last month, racking up the company’s biggest opening weekend since Slumdog Millionaire.
The recipe for the mix of chills and thrills that delight and terrify diners including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Janet McTeer and John Leguizamo, has been carefully balanced by its director with all the precision of the dark head chef, Slowik, played with relish by Ralph Fiennes. And though Mylod will admit he is no foodie, it’s the precision of its satire on fine dining that bites the hardest.

The Menu is a comedy horror movie directed by Mark Mylod, starring Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Fiennes’ performance and the photography save the day in this film as the story at all times maintains a freezing distance to its characters. If that is deliberate or not, will remain a mystery.
Premise
Chef extraodinaire, Julian Slowik, offers a six course dinner at his secluded restaurant to select patrons.
Movie Review
With its pristine photography, and the superb performances, especially by Ralph Fiennes, this horror/thriller, with very faint hints of dark comedy, is visually impressive but does not quite get under one’s skin. It is as cold as the characters in the story.
The Menu (2022)
It is unpleasant by nature – being the thriller/horror movie it is – and the few humorous interjections, while funny, are as cynical as can be, making one laugh but not feel too good about it.

"The Menu" is proving to be a hit for Searchlight, as its opening weekend box office numbers are the highest since the opening weekend of "Slumdog Millionaire." It likely won't go on to make as much as the 2008 Best Picture winner, but the lesson within shows an interest in bizarre genre movies like this. Mark Mylod's dark comedy sees a group of wealthy diners partaking in an extravagantly expensive meal prepared by Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) and his team. The Hawthorne establishment is located on a remote island, which makes their evening a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The dishes resemble art exhibitions more than something you would actually be excited about ordering.
What starts as an overpriced meal quickly becomes something much more sinister, as Chef Slowik takes his diners on an unpredictable journey of class, ego, and flavor they'll never forget. It's best to go into "The Menu" knowing very little,...

Anya Taylor-Joy stars alongside Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult in The Menu, a film from director Mark Mylod (“Succession”) that was released in theaters over the weekend.
Released into 3,211 theaters, The Menu ate up 9 million domestically in its debut weekend, with the darkly comedic horror movie debuting to 15.2 million at the worldwide box office.
The Menu gave Searchlight Pictures its biggest opening weekend since Slumdog Millionaire (’08), and it’s currently #2 on the domestic charts behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Meagan wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even with bursts of shocking violence, there’s a restraint to the horror and madness. The wit, humor, style, and performances ultimately serve tasty morsels worth savoring. The pacing is as methodical as Chef Slowik’s meal, which means it has a way of dragging on a bit too long without fully satiating.”
