After kicking off March with discussions of the Kristen Stewart vehicle Personal Shopper (listen) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (listen), we’re getting a little silly with a deep dive into Raja Gosnell‘s live-action cartoon sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) for its 20th anniversary!
In the film, canine sleuth Scooby-Doo (Neil Fanning) once again joins his pals Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) when the Evil Masked Figure breaks into the Coolsonian Criminology Museum and steals a bunch of costumes that belonged to Mystery Inc.’s previously unmasked foes! What’s worse? E.M.F. is using them to create real monsters! It’s up to the gang to stop the monsters’ attack on Coolsville, while dodging the libelous attacks of television journalist Heather Jasper-Howe (Alicia Silverstone), who is out to discredit their investigations.

Jennifer Love Hewitt hints at possible return as Julie James for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. She can't "confirm or deny" involvement, but says she'd still kick butt in the role. Fans might see Hewitt back as Julie based on her previous enthusiasm for the movies.
Jennifer Love Hewitt isn't saying that she's returning as Julie James for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel... but she's also not saying she isn't. The 9-1-1 actress recently addressed whether she's on board the legacy sequel, saying she can't "confirm or deny" her participation. During an interview with Et for the season 7 premiere of 9-1-1 (where Hewitt has starred since 2018), she shared:
"I can't confirm but I won't deny, how about that?"

I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel misunderstands the point of the previous movies. The upcoming sequel risks repeating the mistakes of the failed TV series. The new film already disregards the essence of the franchise, focusing on superficial elements.
Joining the trend of reboots and sequels in the horror genre is I Know What You Did Last Summer, but the movie is already getting the previous ones wrong, risking repeating the same mistake of the TV series. The horror genre continues to ride the wave of legacy sequels and reboots, through which some popular horror franchises have been brought back to life. Next on the list is I Know What You Did Last Summer, which started in 1997 with the movie of the same name, loosely based on the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan.

Matthew Lillard has been voicing Shaggy in Scooby-Doo movies and TV series since the first live-action theatrical film in 2002. After replacing original voice actor Casey Kasem, Lillard has lent his voice to Shaggy in every Scooby-Doo animated TV series since 2010, except in the 2023 HBO spinoff Velma. Warner Bros. produced 25 direct-to-video animated Scooby-Doo movies from 2010-2023, all featuring Lillard as Shaggy.
An upcoming installment in the Scooby-Doo franchise will see Matthew Lillard returning as the voice of Shaggy, a role he's been playing in movies and TV shows for the past 22 years. After starring in films like Hackers, Scream, and She's All That, Matthew Lillard took on the role of the snack-loving and easily spooked Shaggy Rogers in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film. He later reprised this role in the 2004 sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Years later, when longtime Shaggy voice actor Casey Kasem announced his retirement due to health problems, Lillard...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Writer Teases Upcoming Sequel; A Slasher for the Social Media Age?
As we learned last year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) on board to write the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back, but the film had been originally announced as a legacy sequel of sorts.
Speaking with Collider this week, writer Leah McKendrick remained pretty tight lipped about her I Know What You Did Last Summer plans, but she did provide some low-key insights.
McKendrick told the outlet, “…no spoilers, but I will say that I think if you’re an Og fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it.”
She also teased a social media aspect to the upcoming sequel, something that of course wasn’t present in the original movies because,...

A year ago it was announced that a sequel to the 1997 cult horror classic I Know What You Did Last Summer was in development with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson set to direct. Now we've got a new update from writer Leah McKendrick who recently joined Collider's Perri Nemiroff for an episode of Collider Dailies in celebration of her feature directorial debut, Scrambled. The original film starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. and grossed $125.3 million from a $17 million budget, with a sequel quickly being released the next year. However, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was poorly reviewed and only grossed $84 million on a budget of $24 million. A direct-to-video sequel, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was released in 2006.

The sequel aims to improve on the original by focusing more on overall tension rather than solely relying on the thrills of the killer's kills. The success of the sequel could potentially launch another franchise revival, following the trend of successful legacy sequels like Halloween and Scream.
With nearly a year gone since it was first announced, writer Leah McKendrick offers a promising update on the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel. Based on Lois Duncan's novel of the same name, the horror franchise launched with the 1997 slasher revolving around a group of young adults targeted by a killer fisherman after covering up an accidental death. Through the power of cinema, audiences have long been treated to some of the best stories in fiction, through a diverse range of genres each dedicated to their tropes and themes. These movies follow a traditional structure of beginning, middle, and end, with each part playing a key role in determining how the story is perceived by audiences. For most stories, the opening sequence can be the make or break for how invested audiences get in the story.
The opening scene of any movie is vital in capturing the interest of audiences and establishing the tone of the story. After all, it is here where audiences get their main impression of the story and, quite often, its characters. These scenes should serve to explain what type of story is about to play out without giving away too much. For a scene to do a good job at setting up its...

Years after its release, the Star Wars sequel trilogy remains controversial, especially among older fans who grew up with either previous series of films. The reaction to the sequel trilogy bears many similarities to the reaction the prequel trilogy received from adults fans of the day. Star Wars trilogies aren't for adults, so the legacy of the sequel trilogy won't be written until the children it was made for have grown up.
Just the mere mention of Star Wars fills people's heads with images of crawls, space battles and lightsaber fights all scored by John Williams. However, which images they see likely depends on their ages. If they avoid discussing the films online, the third generation of Star Wars kids are likely still blissfully unaware of the contentious journey each trilogy had before their legacy was cemented in the popular consciousness.

The 2002 live-action movie adaptation of Scooby-Doo received negative reviews from critics upon its initial release. However, despite the criticism, the film went on to become a major box office success, grossing over $275 million worldwide. Two decades later, it has achieved cult classic status. The movie featured a talented young cast, including Freddie Prinze Jr., Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was still starring in the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer at the time. Gellar, who played Daphne Blake, brought her signature dedication to the role, wanting to do something different from Buffy and not disappoint the fans of the beloved cartoon. As Gellar told us at the time of the film’s release, she wanted to take on the role to challenge herself and bring something new to the iconic character. "Star Wars Rebels" is one of the best things to happen to the "Star Wars" universe. Where "The Clone Wars" had a sprawling story with plenty of characters and an unfocused story that instead gave audiences different plotlines, "Rebels" gives you a classic "Star Wars" adventure.
The show focuses on the Ghost Crew, a small ragtag crew of misfits making their way through the galaxy before eventually getting involved in the birth of the Rebel Alliance. Like any classic "Star Wars" story, there are a couple of Jedi in the team -- Kanan and Ezra -- and they are two of the best Jedi characters in the franchise. Their relationship is familiar but fresh, with Kanan not being a traditional teacher because he never finished his own Jedi training. This means Kana understands Ezra's flaws and his anxieties better than anyone, and has little prior knowledge that can help him...

Sequels should expand on the world and story of the original film, rather than reusing the same plot in a new way. Many film franchises have lost their spark with sequels that aren't as good. Sequels that lack new ideas or fail to capture the spirit of the original film often fall flat.
Just because a film gets a sequel, doesn't mean that it will live up to the hype or the quality of the original film. Too often, the next iteration in a franchise reuses the same plot from the original film and attempts to deliver it in a new way. A sequel should expand on the world that the first film created and open it to new characters and possibilities. There must be a clear reason and continuation of the story, while also remaining faithful to the themes of the first film.

It was reported back in February that both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were “in talks” to return for an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel from Sony Pictures, but Freddie Prinze Jr. called that report into question just one month later. According to the actor, he hadn’t actually been offered anything at all – at the time, at least.
So what’s going on here? Is Sony actually even developing a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer? And if so, are Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt even interested?
Well, in a new interview with the podcast Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum, Jennifer Love Hewitt made it clear that she’d love to reprise the role of Julie James one more time.

We can all picture Jennifer Love Hewitt in her big screen breakout role, screaming, “What are you waiting for?!” And that’s not too far off from what she thinks about reprising some of her most memorable characters: Julie James in I Know What You Did Last Summer and Melinda Gordon in Ghost Whisperer.
Appearing on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum (via Screen Rant), Jennifer Love Hewitt showed an interest in returning to her most beloved characters if the opportunities ever came up. On Julie James — the protagonist of the first two I Know What You Did Last Summer movies who helped Jlh give Neve Campbell a run for her money in the late ‘90s as the reigning scream queen — she said she would “one hundred percent” be on board. “Yeah. I loved making those movies.” Now here’s hoping she and Freddie Prinze Jr. can return for a fourth installment.

Jennifer Love Hewitt expressed keen interest in reprising her role in a potential I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. Hewitt is aware of her age but won't let it deter her from returning to the horror franchise. There is hope for a revival of the franchise with Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. interested in returning, similar to the recent revival of the Scream series.
In 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer became a slasher sensation, earning $125 million dollars at the box office against a budget of just $17 million. Its success paved the way for a theatrical sequel in 1998, and a direct-to-video installment in 2006 that featured all new cast members, and has gone largely forgotten about. 25 years since she appeared in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Jennifer Love Hewitt has expressed keen interest in reprising her role of Julie James in a potential legacy...

Few filmmakers have such a knack for building clever plot twists as M. Night Shyamalan. The man has kept us on the edge of our seats all through his decades-spanning career with his thrillers and horror movies alike, and some of those are so iconic, that they've pretty much become a rite of passage for movie fans. You've never watched The Sixth Sense? We're not telling you what happens, but, if you haven't watched it, then you've yet to experience a proper plot twist. But it turns out that one of the biggest plot twists in Shyamalan's career didn't happen on-screen. It turns out he wrote two of 1999's greatest hits: The Sixth Sense and She's All That. Yes, the classic teenage rom-com with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook. There's a lot of debate around those writing credits, and Shyamalan had a hand in making Zack Siler and...

It's doubtful that when Lois Duncan published the slow-burn mystery "I Know What You Did Last Summer" for young adult readers, she predicted it would become the basis for a horror movie franchise over 20 years later. That, however, is precisely what happened — much to the chagrin of junior high English teachers everywhere. Written by the now legendary teen horror screenwriter Kevin Williamson, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was written years before it finally hit production, but after the massive success of "Scream" in 1996, producer Erik Feig knew the best course of action was getting another Williamson slasher into theaters.
Using Duncan's novel as a loose basis, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is about four friends named Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Ray, and Barry (Ryan Phillippe) who after partying on the Fourth of July after high school graduation, hit a person in a drunk driving accident.

Freddie Prinze Jr.'s career peaked in the late '90s and early 2000s with high-profile romantic comedies like "She's All That," but his subsequent films flopped at the box office. Prinze Jr. took a break from acting to prioritize his role as a father and has appeared on screen less since 2008. While only dabbling in a film career, Prinze Jr. has remained involved in the entertainment industry through voice acting, WWE, and creating content for his YouTube channel and podcasts.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was a teen heartthrob and winner of multiple Teen Choice Awards, but he has spent much less time in the limelight in recent years. Son of Freddie Prinze Sr., star of the '70s NBC sitcom Chico and the Man, it seemed that acting was in Prinze Jr.'s blood. His breakthrough in I Know What You Did Last Summer set him on a decade-long high in Hollywood.

The final episodes of Star Wars Rebels featured the death of Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.) at the hands of the Empire while he was trying to protect his family. During a panel hosted by Collider's Arezou Amin during the 2023 edition of Fan Expo in San Francisco, Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray and Ashley Eckstein talked about what it was like for them to work on the animated series which followed a group of rebels as they traveled a galaxy dominated by the Empire. One of the topics in the conversation was how the cast reacted upon learning that Kanan was going to die. Unsurprisingly, it turned out to be a sad moment for them, with Gray stating, "We really were a family. When we showed up to record and Freddy wasn't there. We didn't record for an hour. Everyone was crying because "Oh, we lost Freddy". Wow, that sounded really sad.

Warning: spoilers for various horror movies.
Some horror movies reveal their villain early on, either discreetly or explicitly, setting the stage for the characters' quest for survival. The villains in movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Craft were set up from the beginning, with their true intentions gradually revealed throughout the story. In films like The Exorcist and A Nightmare on Elm Street, the presence of the villain is established in the opening minutes, making their impact on the story immediate and chilling.

When people think of Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, they usually consider it a solid slasher. It certainly had an engaging lead cast—Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe—and a script from Scream creator himself, Kevin Williamson. It even spawned an Amazon Prime spinoff series and is being featured as part of a “High School Horror” category on the Criterion Channel.
But that’s not the film this article is about. This is about the 1998 sequel that has a less positive reputation: Danny Cannon’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which brought back Hewitt and Prinze Jr., but not Gillespie and Williamson. A lot of people tend to think of it as a lesser follow-up that is best left forgotten.

With the actor’s strike finally over, Matthew Lillard can finally talk about the plum role he has in Five Nights at Freddy’s. In a recent THR interview, Lillard mentioned being thrilled about how fans have reacted to the film, noting:
“Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it.
