He shot the burning of Atlanta sequence for Gone with the Wind (1939) under the direction
of producer David O. Selznick, in December 1938. It was the first sequence shot
for the film.
Had been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) since 1927.
He dropped out of film work at the end of the 1950s, but was brought back to Hollywood by Howard Hawks for "El Dorado" (1967). This did not, however, lead to a renewal of his movie career.
