This post contains spoilers for "Fast X."
The "Fast & Furious" franchise has given fans and music lovers alike some genuine bangers over the years, from Ludacris' "Act A Fool" way back in 2003 to the "Gasolina" remix in the newest flick. Plus, of course, there's the multi-platinum tribute to Paul Walker — Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's catchy and heartfelt "See You Again." While the films' soundtracks have always garnered the most attention upon the release of each new installment, the musical scores that help shape the action and drama are equally as deserving of kudos — especially when composer Brian Tyler, who's been involved with the franchise since "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," is involved.
Variety recently spoke with Tyler about his score for the new film, and the composer shared insights into the process of crafting a theme for one of the franchise's boldest characters: Jason Momoa's Dante.

After cutting two episodes helmed by Elisabeth Moss — including the actor’s directorial debut, “The Crossing” — in the fourth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Wendy Hallam Martin collaborated with the series star once again in the Hulu drama’s fifth installment. Of the four episodes the Emmy-winning editor cut this season, Moss directed three, including the opening two hours, “Morning” and “Ballet.” While Martin did her fair share of preparation ahead of the fifth season to ensure she could draw viewers back into the intense situation on which the fourth one had left off, it is Moss’ vision, she highlights, that ultimately set the tone for the premiere.
“[Moss] comes on and absolutely kills it and has a vision herself,” Martin tells Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I mean, I watch all my dailies, from top to bottom, and her vision is very apparent in her footage.

Leading Chinese film director Chen Kaige is poised to shoot historical epic “Swan Song” as his next feature movie. It will focus on 18th century classical music composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky through critical failure, persecution for his sexuality and a mysterious death during the strife of the soon-to-collapse Russian Empire.
Moonstone Entertainment will launch pre-sales on the film at Cannes later this month. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2024 and early 2025 in the Baltics.
“Swan Song” was written by Shahar Stroh, who will also produce alongside Moonstone principal Etchie Stroh. Corporate credits go Moonstone Entertainment and Strohberry Films.
“The story of ‘Swan Song’ goes beyond the music of one man. It is about the perpetual struggle of beauty and love against darkness and hate, and I am excited to be bringing it to a global audience,” said Chen in prepared comments. “Creating a visually stunning and compelling story, paired with Tchaikovsky’s timeless music,...

There is literally no other character in movie history that's as popular as Dracula.
That's not speculation, and it's not hyperbole, it's a recorded fact: The Guinness Book of World Records has declared Dracula "the most portrayed literary character in film." People love this bloodsucking monster, whether he's portrayed as a sympathetic antihero or a despicable hellspawn, possibly bent on world domination, and often on the hunt for a girlfriend who looks suspiciously like his ex.
So it makes sense that Chris McKay's "Renfield" would not only tell yet another version of the "Dracula" story, this time from the perspective of his notoriously sniveling manservant Renfield (played by Nicholas Hoult), but also that the film would be peppered with references to "Dracula" movies of yore.
The first trailer alone featured two distinct references to Tod Browning's original 1931 classic, starring Bela Lugosi as cinema's most iconic monster. Did you catch them,...

Returning to Cannes a year after his feverish drama “Petrov’s Flu” hit the Croisette, Kirill Serebrennikov can finally attend the festival in person after recently being free from years of house arrest. Debuting in competition, his latest offering, “Tchaikovsky’s Wife,” is a slow-burn historical drama that never manages to escape from being a bore despite its seemingly intriguing premise.
As opposed to channeling all of his energy into making a project entirely focused on the life and career of famed 19th-century Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — “The Music Lovers” already exists for that — Serebrennikov instead, as the title suggests, puts all the attention on Antonina Miliukova, a music student who becomes fully consumed with her affections for Tchaikovsky and eventually marries him.

Lady Beard: Serebrennikov Delivers Extravagant Recuperation of a Woman Undone
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, one of the 19th century’s most prolific composers, whose music remains an international staple and influence, was homosexual and married to a woman of a lower class for nearly six weeks before abandoning her. Despite never obtaining a legal divorce, they would never meet again before his death in 1893 and she would spend her final days in asylum before dying in 1917. Her name was Antonina Miliukova, and a reimagining of her perspective and experience is explored in Kirill Serebrennikov’s Tchaikovsky’s Wife, a title, it is assumed, she refused to relent until the bitter end.…...

With Ken Russell’s madly over-the-top The Music Lovers reassuringly tucked in dusty attic corners after 52 years, a fresh and notably inspired take on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s fraught marriage arrives in the churningly emotional and visually rich Tchaikovsky’s Wife.
Director Kirill Serebrennikov, whose most recent films were Leto and Petrov’s Flu, is currently in exile from his homeland following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Additional ill will at home surrounding the prominent theater and opera director’s new work stems from its exploration of the composer’s gay leanings, an officially taboo subject locally but one that will stir interest among significant audiences internationally.
By all accounts, Tchaikovsky’s intimate life was fraught, complicated and likely rooted in a need to at least appear to adhere to convention. Almost at once, the film pulls you into to swirl of musically driven movement, emotional instability and highly focused desire...

It’s hard to imagine that anyone could make another movie about 19th century Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky that’s as febrile and virtuosic as Ken Russell’s “The Music Lovers,” but dissident filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov — freshly released from his Putin-ordered house arrest, but still awaiting trial on ludicrous charges of fraud — has risen to the challenge with his usual aplomb, orchestrating
Then again, Serebrennikov’s film isn’t really about the mercurial gay man who wrote “Swan Lake.” As you might be able to deduce from its title, the morbidly opulent “Tchaikovsky’s Wife” is more interested in the obsessive music student who married him. Social conventions of the time are sufficient to explain how Antonina Miliukova remained oblivious to — or in semi-denial of — her husband’s unyielding sexual orientation (even after he set his bed on fire in order to get her out of it), but Serebrennikov...

Back when art-house movies played full-time in art houses, “Tchaikovsky’s Wife,” at least on paper, might have seemed a film of middlebrow commercial hooks — the sort of movie that would have slipped into the Lincoln Plaza Cinemas in New York and played there comfortably for a month or so. The first hook, of course, is Tchaikovsky himself, the Russian composer who created works of such timeless and popular beauty that he is always in danger, in an odd way, of being underrated, like the Spielberg of longhairs. Tchaikovsky’s short-lived marriage, to Antonina Miliukova, was both a disaster and a semi-scandal, but the time now feels ripe for a rediscovery of this tragic episode, which hinged on Tchaikovsky’s homosexuality and the fact that he agreed to marry as a desperate closeted strategic ploy. That the late 19th century was a time when even an artist of his magnitude could not live openly,...

If you find yourself needing to latch onto an obscure scientific theory to reinvigorate your energy level and live your life as more than a sleepwalking zombie, you’re probably not ready to actually confront the real problem. We know this to be true of the quartet at the center of Thomas Vinterberg’s effective, cathartic drama Druk (known in English as Another Round), since our first impression of Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Peter (Lars Ranthe), Nikolaj (Magnus Millang), and especially Martin (Mads Mikkelsen) is that they have lost their spark. Sexually, intellectually, physically, emotionally—whatever spark you can describe in words, they’ve lost it. Call it a mid-life crisis if you want. Call it evidence for needing a therapist like it is. Or, as they decide, retrieve that long-lost courage at the bottom of a bottle.

Yesterday evening Mackenzie Foy and Keira Knightley came to the capital to deliver the Christmas present that is The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. This is Disney’s live-action adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker about a young girl who finds a Nutcracker doll among the family’s gifts and is charged by her parents to take special care of it.
Mackenzie Foy talked about the physicality of the role, how her martial arts training helped her, and if she’d be up for a sequel and what she thinks of her fans. Keira Knightley told us how she cherished the opportunity to do something less serious than her recent roles such as Colette, and what it felt like to be a cake. She also talked about finding her voice through the music. Ellie Bamber talked about...

The Nutcracker is a feminine, nostalgic holiday delight that balances its derivative plot with sumptuous visuals.
The Nutcracker ballet is a longstanding holiday tradition. Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov to a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky back in 1892, countless theaters and ballet companies around the world mount productions of The Nutcracker every year. So it's no surprise Disney wanted to get a piece of that public domain action. While the Tchaikovsky music was never apiece with previous animated Disney classics that have become an open mine for unending live-action remakes, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms taps into a similar kind of collective nostalgia with its (very) loose adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King."

Disney has made a killing at the box office by reimagining some of its greatest works, from “Alice in Wonderland” to “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast,” which remains the highest grossing film of 2017 (at least until “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” surpasses it). Hoffmann’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker.” Mackenzie Foy plays a young girl who is whisked away on an epic adventure through fantastical realms. Keira Knightley stars as the Sugar Plum Fairy, with Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and ballet dancer Misty Copeland featured in supporting roles.
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” will be released in theaters November 2, 2018. Watch the first trailer below.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is almost finished baking, but it needs a little extra sugar before it makes its way to theaters. Like any big-budget tentpole that relies heavily on CGI effects, there are significant reshoots planned for Disney’s adaptation of the E.T.A. Hoffmann fairytale and Tchaikovsky ballet. However, because the film’s original director […]

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is going to need a little more sprinkling of sugar.

Joe Johnston, the helmer of Captain America: The First Avenger, The Rocketeer and Jurassic Park III, is being brought in to direct the shoot, not the movie’s original helmer Lasse Hallstrom.

What do you get when you strap a full orchestra onto one of the most high octane rock operas in history? You get an instant classic.
Pete Townshend came roaring into New York City’s fabled Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center this weekend with the force of a thousand Gs Scooters as he delivered Classic Quadrophenia—an orchestral reimagining of the Who’s 1973 concept album. Though he contributed acoustic guitar to a handful of songs, the maestro mostly left it to the philharmonic ensemble lead by Robert Ziegler, who also conducted Rachel Fuller’s arrangements on the 2015 studio recording.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
Declaring 2007 to be the year mumblecore came of age would be equally as fair as labeling it the year mumblecore collapsed. The signs of ascendance and coalescence—group coverage in high-profile publications, series programmed at art houses,...

Now that her standard-issue space vest and dusty dungarees have been returned to the Lucasflm costume department, Felicity Jones is donning a tutu. The Hollywood Reporter has details on what it describes as a “hot pitch” starring Jones, a feature-length adaptation of Swan Lake. Unlike Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, the article clarifies, this particular film will actually follow the plot of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, about a princess who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. Jones is attached to star as Odette, the aforementioned enchanted aristocrat.

When I was seven-years old I had a Kool-Aid stand and with my profits bought my very first album -- The Beatles' Second Album. I remember walking the several blocks to the Acme store and praying that they still had a copy in the album rack. They did. I couldn't wait to get home and play it on my portable record player. I carefully placed the needle on the very first track on side one of that magnificent album and... my life would forever be devoted to music in some shape or form. On that beloved album, the very first track was my favorite song -- "Roll Over Beethoven" -- by one Mr. Chuck Berry. At the time, I had no idea who wrote the song nor much cared. It was all about The Beatles. But as almost everyone knows, Chuck Berry wrote and recorded it years earlier. And...

This charming animation sees two waifs seek their fortune in Paris… but Tchaikovsky would spin in his grave
Ballerina is a charming animation about a pair of waifs who escape their Breton orphanage and flee to Paris to realise their ambitions. Félicie dreams of a career as a dancer; Victor fancies himself an inventor. Nineteenth-century Paris is handsomely captured in pleasing sun-dappled computer-animation. And the message of fortitude and resilience is undercut with humour. Still, the decision to replace the music of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker suite at the film’s climax with some honking power-pop atrocity destroys much of the delicately wrought atmosphere.

An operatic thriller about the staging of an opera in contemporary Moscow, The Queen of Spades feels at times almost like a Russian-language remake of Darren Aronofsky’s lurid ballet-themed psychodrama Black Swan. Director Pavel Lungin co-wrote the screenplay with David Seidler, who earned an Oscar for The King’s Speech. They borrow their title, key characters and selective plot elements from two related sources: Alexander Pushkin’s supernatural short story, first published in 1834, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s 1890 opera of the same name.

Ethereal enough as a mere mortal, Keira Knightley will play an actual sprite. According to Variety, Knightly will take on the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s upcoming The Nutcracker And The Four Realms. The adaptation of the classic tale, a staple of ballet schools everywhere, is set to be directed by Lasse Hallström, but don’t necessarily expect Knightley to be stepping into any pointe shoes or going all Natalie Portman in Black Swan to prepare. The movie will be light on the pirouetting, with the principal duties going to famed American Ballet Theatre star Misty Copeland. However, we’re going to assume that at some point during the movie we’ll hear Tchaikovsky’s iconic “Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy” as Knightley appears on screen. (Now enjoy having that stuck in your head for the rest of the day.)

The upcoming live-action Disney movie The Nutcracker And The Four Realms has welcomed its first cast member – legendary ballerina Misty Copeland. Her appearance in the movie will mark her first involvement in narrative cinema, having already featured on television reality shows, as well as a documentary about her own early career, A Ballerina’s Tale.
The film will be helmed by Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom (Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, The Shipping News, Chocolat), armed with a script by Ashleigh Powell, who makes her screenwriting debut here. With Mark Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy) producing the project, it is notable that the first casting choice is a strong one – recognizing that Misty Copeland is a world-renowned, award winning talent. It also indicates the tone that Hallstrom will be striving for – evidently mixing his own visual flair with the rich musical history of the tale.
