There is a distinct flavor of the brawnily austere Westerns that comprise Budd Boetticher’s cult-favorite Ranown Cycle — and more than a hint of another showcase for the great Randolph Scott, Sam Peckinpah’s “Ride the High Country” — in director Michael Feifer’s “Last Shoot Out,” a small-budget indie that aims to please the currently underserved niche audience for oaters.
To be sure, no one will ever confuse this slow-paced concoction with one of the classics that so obviously influence it. But it’s definitely a cut above some of the recent streaming-ready attempts to sustain the genre — indeed, it’s a marked improvement over Feifer’s own “Catch the Bullet,” released just last September — and it features a ferociously nasty turn by Bruce Dern in a role that recalls a character from yet another golden oldie, Walter Brennan’s vicious Old Man Clanton in “My Darling Clementine.”

"I'm just trying to stay alive. I suggest all you do the same." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a western action thriller titled Last Shoot Out, yet another new film from B-movie director Michael Feifer, also of A Soldier's Revenge and Catch the Bullet within the last year. The plot follows a woman who escapes her new husband's ranch after learning he killed her father. She hides out with a gunman named Billy Tyson at a remote outpost until he comes from her. Skylar Witte stars as Jocelyn, with a cast including Bruce Dern, Cam Gigandet, Michael Welch, Jay Pickett, & Brock Harris. Unfortunately it looks instantly forgettable, even with lots of shoot outs, another direct-to-video dump. Don't waste your time with this one. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michael Feifer's Last Shoot Out, direct from YouTube: Cam Gigandet and Academy Award nominee Bruce Dern light up this gritty,...

Westerns seem to be popping up all over the Dtv and VOD markets in the last year or so. From Hell on the Border, Righteous Blood and the upcoming Apache Junction to western/horror hybrids like The Pale Door and Skinwalker, it seems the Old West is new again. Catch the Bullet is a new one written by Jerry Robbins and directed by Michael Feifer. Should you catch it? Or dodge a bullet and watch something else?
Marshal Britt MacMaster, played by the late Jay Pickett and to whom the film is dedicated, has just gunned down a bank robber and his two accomplices. For the three months it took to track them, his father is watching his twelve-year-old son Chad.

"Let's play catch the bullet." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for a direct-to-dvd quality western called Catch the Bullet, from a filmmaker you've never heard of before named Michael Feifer (you don't want to look up the films he's made before this). The story sounds like pretty much every other western as well. A US Marshal, aided by an Indian scout and a bigoted town deputy, ride into hostile territory to rescue his kidnapped son from an outlaw gang lead by a psychopathic killer. I'm already bored just typing that out. Catch the Bullet co-stars the late Jay Pickett, who tragically passed away a few weeks ago at age 60 while filming Treasure Valley in Idaho. The film also stars Tom Skerritt, Peter Facinelli, Gattlin Griffith, Mason McNulty, and Tucson Vernon Walker. This is undoubtedly some direct-to-video junk, not only uninteresting but entirely derivative, with nothing much to offer besides...

Originally titled “The First Ride of Wyatt Earp”, Michael Feifer’s ode to the famous lawman has since gotten a title change. Now going under the more action-heavy title of “Wyatt Earp’s Revenge”, the film is scheduled to gallop onto DVD March 6th, 2012 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Yes, just DVD, no Blu-ray. I guess title change notwithstanding, Sony Pictures didn’t think the film could pay back the cost of a Blu-ray transfer. The trailer for the film, which awaits below, is not exactly the kind of Western that’s going to give, say, Kevin Costner’s “Open Range” a run for its money. It’s clearly a moderately budgeted affair, and its biggest name is Val Kilmer, who probably has a cameo. Still, if you’re a fan of Westerns, let’s face it, there’s not a lot of offerings to choose from nowadays, so as the saying goes,...

From the director of Firestarter, Class of 1999, Showdown in Little Tokyo, and Commando comes Groupie, a psycho thriller about a psychopathic rock groupie terrorizing a popular rock band on their comeback tour.
Groupie marks the first time Mark L. Lester has stepped behind the camera since 2005's highly rated Syfy original Pterodactyl. Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow) stars as a mysterious groupie that hooks up with a famous rock band named "The Dark Knights" looking to rise again on their comeback tour. As she insinuates herself more and more into their lives and career, the more death and mayhem follows.
Hal Ozsan ("90210") co-stars at the band's troubled lead singer, along with Betsy Rue (famously naked in My Bloody Valentine 3D) and the venerable Eric Roberts as the band's almost assuredly soon-to-be-dead manager. Michael Feifer (Dracula's Guest) and Randall Frakes (Hell Comes to Frogtown) are credited with the screenplay.

When people think back on the earlier, more successful portion of Val Kilmer’s career the role that gives them the most warm fuzzies is probably Kilmer’s portrayal of Doc Holliday in Tombstone. In that film he was cool, charismatic, and he basically stole the whole thing out from under Kurt Russell, who had the meatier part of Wyatt Earp. Now comes the news that Kilmer is going to slide over a spot and take on the Wyatt Earp role himself for Mike Feifer’s The First Ride of Wyatt Earp. Feifer has done mostly direct to video work over the course of his career, and Kilmer has recently sunk into that same world, but perhaps this is the film that is going to allow both men to get into the swing of things when it comes to big studio releases. With the huge financial success of True Grit, I...

Currently enjoying something of a career renaissance, particularly leaning towards more independently minded cinema, is one time Batman Val Kilmer. With his name associated with no less than ten pictures in the previous year, the fifty one year old actor has been linked with another myriad of projects, the latest of which is The First Ride of Wyatt Earp, based on the life of the legendary figure from the Wild West of the early 19th century, and a man whose fame can be attributed foremost to his role in the notorious “Gunfight at the Ok Corral;” an incident which in itself has been subject of many screen-writers – including early 90′s pic Tombstone, where Kilmer played the part of Doc Holliday, perhaps his best remembered screenrole.

Perhaps one of Val Kilmer’s best performances was in 1993′s Tombstone as Doc Holiday, the story of Wyatt Earp and his brothers during the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Well, First Showing is reporting that Val is heading back to this familiar story in The First Ride of Wyatt Earp, which is described as a cool Young Guns version of the Kevin Costner Wyatt Earp film from 1994.
No, Kilmer won’t return as Doc Holiday, which is now played by Wilson Bethel (HBO’s Generation Kill ). Instead, he’s tapped to play Wyatt Earp! Hmm, like the choice? The film is being directed by Michael Feifer (Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield).
This could be something of interest, as Kilmer has done a slew of Dtv films recently of little importance.

Westerns don't usually do too well but, if done right, audiences respond. In 1988 and 1990, buoyed by a cast of hot young (then) actors (including Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen) and a fantastic soundtrack, Young Guns showed that westerns could be cool. Now, with the success of True Grit and Rango, the indie The First Ride of Wyatt Earp is trying out that Young Guns playbook. The story will be about a reporter interviewing a senior citizen Earp about his legendary days as a marshal in the Wild West and they'll show the story about his rounding up a posse to find the outlaw that unintentionally killed the woman he loved.
Val Kilmer will play the elderly Earp; he played Doc Holliday in Tombstone and the title character in the TV movie Billy the Kid. The reporter is Daniel Booko (he's been on "iCarly," "Hannah Montana" and "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,...

Val Kilmer has been part of the Wyatt Earp story once before, playing Doc Holliday in Tombstone. ("I'm your huckleberry" [1] should be a line etched into the brain of any western fan.) Now he's going back to the classic tale, and this time he's playing Wyatt Earp, in the indie western The First Ride of Wyatt Earp. The film was written by Darren Benjamin Shepherd, and will be directed by Mike Feifer. The story, says Variety [2], " finds an elderly Earp sitting down with a reporter to reflect on the ride that made him a legend, when the young marshal rounded up a posse to track down the outlaw who mistakenly murdered the woman he loved." So will Val Kilmer play both the older Earp and the younger? Right now we don't know. Wilson Bethel plays Doc Holliday, Daniel Booko plays Spike Kennedy, and Trace Adkins, Miracle Laurie, Steven Grayhm and...

This week on DVD and Blu-ray I get to re-watch one of the best TV shows of the last decade, see below:
Grab ‘Em Right Away
Lost – The Complete Series Blu-ray
Created by: J. J. Abrams
Starring: Matthew Fox, Naveen Andrews, Jorge Garcia, Josh Hollaway, Daniel Day Kim, Yunjin Kim, Evangeline Lilly, Terry O’Quinn, Emile De Ravin, Michael Emerson, Dominic Monaghan & Henry Ian Cusick
Why should you buy this? Because (as I said above) it is one of the greatest TV shows of the past decade. It definitely doesn’t surpass my love for The Wire, but it hits a science-fiction/storytelling high that many one-hour dramas would love to reach. Not only does the show take it’s situation seriously, but it takes the treatment of its characters with such truth that you never feel taken advantage of. Even though I do have a few problems with some...

Chicago – I wonder how the movie history books will remember Brittany Murphy, who died suddenly at the end of 2009. When she went, she had a few films in some stage of post-production and one, the thriller “Abandoned,” makes its way to Blu-ray and DVD this week. The film works about as well as your average straight-to-dvd thriller but distinguishes itself a bit due to Murphy’s underrated acting ability, but this actress deserved a more fitting final note.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Especially when one considers the ugly rumors that surrounded her death combined with a few recent career decisions that pulled her out of the spotlight — most obituaries turned to “Clueless” or “Don’t Say a Word” as her most notable roles — it seems likely that history won’t be as kind to Brittany Murphy as it should be. What’s saddest is that she gave arguably the best performance of...

President Bill Clark added, “Releasing this young actress’s last film is both an honor and bittersweet. It was important to Anchor Bay that the timing of this release be right, because we’re sensitive to such a tragic loss.

The talented Brittany Murphy was involved with several film projects at the time of her death. Abandoned is one of two independent features that she was involved with prior to her passing on December 20th. Brittany stars with Dean Cain in this first trailer for Abandoned and in the clip, despite looking tired in one or two scenes, she looks fully cognicant or aware. Have a look at Brittany Murphy and co-stars Mimi Rogers with Tim Thomeson in this first trailer for Abandoned, which releases in 2010.

Posters of Brittany Murphy being pulled. Extremely popular DVD rental company Redbox is scrambling to removed promotional posters of Brittany Murphy's recent movie "Deadline" as it depicts the actress slouching in a bathtub looking lifeless.
Considering Murphy's body was found in a shower, it's no wonder Redbox and the film's distribution company are removing the posters. Director Michael Feifer tells People, "Brittany was a pro, “When she needed to turn it on, she just threw a switch and she was on. She didn't have to be all method. There was a moment where she needed to cry, and we were kidding around where she actually said she could cry out of one eye and you just had to pick which eye you wanted. She was that good at her craft. So playing frantic came really easy and playing sweet came really easy." Murphy will be missed by family, friends and fans.
