George R.R. Martin, John Grisham, Jonathan Franzen, and George Saunders are among the authors who have filed a class action lawsuit against the company behind ChatGPT, accusing them of “feeding” and “training” the AI software on the authors’ copyrighted works.

The Authors Guild, John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, Michael Connelly, Jodi Picoult and a group of other famous fiction writers filed a class action lawsuit on Wednesday against OpenAI, claiming that their technology is infringing on their works.
It’s the latest lawsuit to challenge AI’s use of copyrighted works as “training data” for their system.
In their complaint, the authors claim that OpenAI copied their works “wholesale, without permission or consideration.” The plaintiffs contend that the company fed their works into large language models, “algorithms designed to output human-seeming text responses to users’ prompts and queries.”
“Generative AI is a vast new field for Silicon Valley’s longstanding exploitation of content providers. Authors should have the right to decide when their works are used to ‘train’ AI. If they choose to opt in, they should be appropriately compensated,” author Jonathan Franzen said in a statement. Read the complaint.

Hank is going to Hank.
If you didn't learn that from the series premiere of Lucky Hank, you'll know it after Lucky Hank Season 1 Episode 2, premiering Sunday on AMC and AMC+.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive clip from the new episode, and it features Bob Odenkirk delivering another masterclass in acting.
He was excellent on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but he's playing a very different role in Lucky Hank, showcasing his impressive acting range to perfection.
In the clip, Hank is given the opportunity to speak with Booker Prize winner George Saunders.
While anyone would be ecstatic about speaking with such a prestigious figure, Hank has other ideas.
It doesn't help matters that Hank learns just how much the college is paying for the privilege of having George at the campus.
It's a fun scene that showcases why the show has been such a resounding success with critics.

Plot: Lucky Hank is an eight-episode mid-life crisis tale set at Railton College. Told in the first person by William Henry Devereaux, Jr., the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt.
Review: Bob Odenkirk is one hell of an actor. The accomplished comedian joined Breaking Bad as Saul Goodman in what many of us assumed was a comic relief role before turning in a bravura performance as the lawyer in his spin-off, Better Call Saul. While earning acclaim in that role, Odenkirk became an unexpected action hero in Nobody, proving his versatility across genres. Now, Odenkirk blends his dramatic and comedic chops for a new AMC series, Lucky Hank. Based on the Richard Russo novel Straight Man, Lucky Hank is a biting and satirical comedy that is equally serious and funny, with a substantial leading role for Odenkirk as the title character.

Time for some inside baseball: reviewing TV can be tricky. When I review a movie, I'm always given a full picture; a beginning, middle, and end. TV is a different beast, because most of the time, networks will only send out a handful of episodes to review instead of a full season. And as almost anyone can tell you, a lot of TV shows take a little time to get to that sweet spot. It's very rare to have a show that's firing on all cylinders right out of the gate — unless the show is an episodic sitcom, you need time to spend with the characters as they deal with their various ever-unfolding conflicts.
All of this is to say that it's not an easy task to review "Lucky Hank," Bob Odenkirk's return to both TV and AMC. Only two episodes were provided for review, and as a whole,...

Brendan Fraser has explained why he thinks Tom Cruise’s 2017 The Mummy reboot flopped.
The 53-year-old actor, who played the role of Rick O’Connell in the original film The Mummy and its two sequels, said that Cruise’s reboot of the film “was too much of a straight-ahead horror”.
In his cover story with Variety, Fraser said that “it is hard to make that movie”.
“The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun,” he said of Cruise’s critically derided film. “That was what was lacking in that incarnation.
“It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
He added: “I know how difficult it is to pull it off. I tried to do it three times.”

As Netflix continues to struggle in 2022, the streaming service is considering releasing Knives Out 2 in theaters before it begins streaming.
“Considering that Knives Out immediately became a crowd-pleasing theatergoing experience, it initially came as a surprise that its sequels were picked up by Netflix. However, a new report by Bloomberg suggests that director Rian Johnson’s first follow-up to the 2019 whodunnit could receive a 45-day theatrical window.”

Netflix has launched the full trailer for the Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller darkly funny psychological thriller ‘Spiderhead.’
In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits. In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too. But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption takes a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether.
Based on The New Yorker short story by George Saunders, the film is directed by Joseph Kosinski.

Less than a month after the highly anticipated “Top Gun: Maverick” flies into theaters, director Joseph Kosinski is reuniting with star Miles Teller for the Netflix sci-fi thriller “Spiderhead.”
Based on the George Saunders short story “Escape From Spiderhead,” which was originally published in The New Yorker, “Spiderhead” stars Teller as a prisoner at the titular state-of-the-art penitentiary, designed by inventor Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth). Located on a gorgeous island, the island offers its prisoners reduced prison sentences and good accommodations at a price; every inmate wears a surgically attached experimental device that administers mind-altering drugs in their brain.
Although Abnesti is convinced that his work will save lives, the experiments he carries out on his patients begins to test the boundaries of free will. When two subjects, Steve (Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett) form a romantic connection, the two begin to rebel against him and his attempts to program them.

With Joseph Kosinski's long-delayed "Top Gun: Maverick" finally on the verge of hitting theaters (assuming I haven't just gone and jinxed it), it's time to start talking about ... his next movie.

The sci-fi thriller is based on "Escape From Spiderhead," a short story written by George Saunders and published in the New Yorker in 2010. Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett will lend their combined star wattage to Netflix’s “Spiderhead,” Variety has confirmed.
The film is an adaptation of a George Saunders short story that first ran in The New Yorker and was later included in the author’s book, “Tenth of December.” It unfolds in the near future and follows two convicts who are housed in a facility run by a doctor who experiments on inmates with powerful drugs that alter emotions.
It’s the latest high-profile project for Netflix, which has been spending freely in recent weeks to land buzzy films. At the Toronto International Film Festival, it shelled out $30 million for “Malcolm & Marie” with Zendaya and John David Washington, $20 million for Halle Berry’s directorial debut “Bruised” and an undisclosed, but almost certainly eye-popping, sum for “Pieces of a Woman” with Vanessa Kirby and Shia Labeouf. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy went deep on the making of the band’s new album, Ode to Joy, and many other topics in his recent appearance on our podcast, Rolling Stone Music Now. Read some highlights below, and to hear the entire interview, press play or download and subscribe on iTunes or Spotify.

After three Jeff Tweedy solo records and a memoir, Wilco’s first album since 2016 arrives like a reunion. It sounds like one too: simple, straightforward songs, most with acoustic guitar at the core, other melodic tendrils and rhythms and harmonic drones curling up like ivy, a long-running conversation being picked up, slow but sure. The sound recalls Sky Blue Sky, the very first album by the band’s current lineup, and the spirit definitely feels informed by its bandleader’s recent path: Tweedy’s deep dive into Tweedy. These are all positives.

A White, White DayUnder the wintry, aluminium-tinged skies of Hlynur Pálmason’s films, men fight against loneliness and isolation, literal and metaphorical. However premature it may be to attach a leitmotiv to the oeuvre of a 34-year-old with two features under his belt, the Reykjavik-native’s 2017 debut feature, Winter Brothers, and his sophomore, A White, White Day, offer portraits of men marooned in landscapes of belittling immensities, fumbling after an identity in austere, inhospitable places. Winter Brothers chronicled the toxic sibling rivalry between two young mine workers (Elliott Crosset Hove and Simon Sears) stranded in a remote corner of Eastern Denmark. His Cannes Critics' Week entry, A White, White Day, follows police chief Ingimundur (Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson) as he struggles to process the loss of his wife by channeling all his energies on building a house for his daughter and beloved 8-year-old granddaughter Salka (Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir). Much like Winter...

Joseph Kosinski, the director of Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, Only The Brave, and Top Gun: Maverick, has signed on for a new film project for Netflix. It’s called Spiderhead, and the script come from Deadpool and Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
The movie is an adaptation of the George Saunders short story, which is “set in the near future, when convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects in hopes of shortening their sentences. When one prisoner finds himself the test patient for a new pharmaceutical capable of generating feelings of love, he begins questioning the reality of his emotions and sets out to discover the truth.”
That certainly sounds like and interesting story to tell, one that will be perfect for Kosinski to take on. I’ve really enjoyed the films that Kosinski has made. I like his visual and storytelling style.

Wilco recently announced that they will be going on hiatus. The reason: Drummer Glenn Kotche’s wife, Miiri, got a Fulbright Scholarship to study medical device design in Finland. “It just seemed like a good reason to honor her and honor his commitment to the band: kind of allow them to have that opportunity and not put a whole lot of demands on their time,” Jeff Tweedy recently told Rolling Stone. “It’s always good for a band to go away for a while.
