A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.
Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

On Oct. 7, when the Israel-Hamas war broke out, Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir was just one week away from starting principal photography in Bethlehem, 45 miles from Gaza, on “All Before You.”
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker’s long-gestating project reconstructs the 1936 farmer-led revolt against British colonial rule and the influx of Jewish settlements in Palestine that has been at the root of the conflict. The latest outbreak of violence came after a Hamas-led terror attack that left about 1,200 Israelis dead while 250 were taken hostage, with more than 100 believed to still be held by Hamas.
Now Jacir, who is based in Ramallah, the de facto capital of the Palestinian Authority, is anxiously waiting for a cease-fire that will put an end to the death and destruction and allow her to go back and shoot the drama. “It’s more important than ever to tell this largely forgotten story,” she says.

As we enter the heart of Hollywood awards season, there are signs everywhere of both how far the entertainment industry has come in telling the whole American story — and just how far it has left to go.
Last month, events during the Sundance Film Festival reflected on the fractious times we are living in.
There was a conversation with Jewish hostages on their harrowing experiences and a public protest against the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, which has resulted in tens of thousands of civilian deaths.
There were also hundreds of Muslim creators and their allies who gathered one evening at the festival’s Muslim House. The standing-room-only event confirmed both the vitality of Muslim creators — writers, directors, producers, artists — and the immense challenges they continue to face in breaking through.
The statistics confirm their experiences. A 2022 study from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism found that,...

Kieran Culkin quipped to his wife onstage that he’s ready to grow their family following his first-ever Emmy win on Monday night’s 2023 Emmys.
“My beautiful wife, Jazz, thank you for sharing your life with me and giving me two amazing kids, Kinsey Sioux and Wilder Wolf, I love you so many and so much,” Culkin said from the stage. “And Jazz: I want more. You said maybe if I win.”
His joke was met with laughter from the theater as Jazz also smiled and laughed in her seat.
Culkin received the Emmy award for best actor in a drama series for his performance as Roman Roy in Succession, which released its fourth and final season in 2023. “Succession” is going out in style!
The HBO drama took home the big prize — Outstanding Drama Series — at the Emmys on January 15 for the fourth and final season of the buzzy hit.
Prior to this year, “Succession” had already won 13 Emmys. This year, it scored 26 nominations, including individual ones for basically all the cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Alexander Skarsgård, J. Smith-Cameron, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, Hiam Abbass, Cherry Jones and Harriet Walter.
“Succession” previously won the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in 2022 (for Season 3) and 2020 (Season 2) and was nominated for Season 1 in 2019. A bit of award season intrigue: Both Culkin and Snook switched from Supporting to Lead categories for the final season, given their larger roles during the final installments.

1992 archival footage of Palestinian lake Tiberias opens this feature documentary from Lina Soualem. The images, although mundane, have a very specific function. Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”) won the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actress. She plays Riley Abel on the HBO drama series, and this marks her first career victory (on her first nomination) with the Television Academy.
After being delayed since September due to the writers’ strike and actors’ strike, the Creative Arts Emmys for scripted fare finally took place on Saturday, January 6, with more awards for unscripted programs being doled out on Sunday, January 7. The official Primetime Emmys ceremony will air on Fox next Monday, January 15 with Anthony Anderson serving as host.
Reid’s episode, titled “Left Behind,” is a flashback entry focusing on lead character Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) past. It primarily functions as a two-hander in which the tight-knit military school roommates realize just how deeply they care for each other while covertly spending a night alone in a deserted shopping mall.

After a 28-year-old Lee You-mi (“Squid Game”) set a new record in 2022 as the all-time youngest Emmy winner for guest acting, she could be supplanted by Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who became a first-time Emmy nominee mere days after turning 20. Like Lee (who isn’t eligible for a repeat win), Reid is seeking the Best Drama Guest Actress prize for her portrayal of a likable, ill-fated character on a new series with a contemporary, dystopian setting. Given her show’s even greater level of TV academy recognition compared to “Squid Game” last year, Reid could very well be on her way toward a historic victory.

After appearing in the majority of “Succession” episodes, Hiam Abbass is finally an Emmy nominee. The actress recurred in all four seasons of the HBO series as Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) wife Marcia, even as their relationship was rocked by Logan’s affairs with Rhea Jarrell — who could forget Abbass’s shakedown of Holly Hunter? — and others. Abbass returned for two episodes of the final season, for which she nabbed a bid for Best Drama Guest Actress. Could she prevail on her very first try?
To do so, Abbass will have to best a formidable group of contenders, including two others from her own show. Cherry Jones reprised her Emmy-winning character Nan Pierce from the second season of “Succession” in the fourth season premiere and earned her fifth career bid, while Harriet Walter has earned her third nomination for “Succession,” and fifth overall, as Logan’s former wife and...

Following her film, Their Algeria, documentarian Lina Soualem returns to her family once again for an in-depth look at its rich history. With Bye Bye Tiberias, Soualem focuses on several generations of women in her family, beginning with her mother, Succession star Hiam Abbass, who, as a young woman, left her home country of Palestine for France, where she still lives today. While Their Algeria followed the story of Soualem’s grandparents who decided to divorce after 62 years, Bye Bye Tiberias looks at what it means to leave your family and culture behind and the generational thread between women.
Deadline: Hiam, how did you feel when Lina first floated the idea of you being the subject of her film?
Hiam Abbass: No way! But in the beginning, of course, Lina wasn’t very clear about what she wanted herself. She knew she wanted to do a movie, she knew...

Exclusive: New York-based Women Make Movies has acquired U.S. rights for Palestinian Oscar entry Bye Bye Tiberias by Lina Soualem.
The intimate work sees Soualem accompany her Palestinian-French actress mother Hiam Abbass back to the Arab village within Israeli borders, which she left in the 1980s to pursue her acting career in Europe.
There, they reflect on her past as well as the lives of Abbass’ mother and grandmother in a powerful work exploring themes of displacement, identity and survival across four generations of women.
Wmm executive director Debra Zimmerman said the film was a “perfect fit” for the label, which aims to put spotlight on the work of female filmmakers.
“It is a beautiful film about four generations of Palestinian women,” she said. “I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to have this film seen widely right now by the diverse audiences that need and deserve to see it.

After “Their Algeria,” a well-received documentary from 2020 about the parents of her actor father Zinedine Soualem, France-born filmmaker-performer Lina Soualem turns her camera on her maternal relatives in “Bye Bye Tiberias,” in particular her mother, the Palestine-born actress Hiam Abbass. By telling their story, she hopes to reclaim and question the personal, historical and visual legacies she inherited and to answer the question “How does a woman find her place when caught between worlds?” a question that applies equally to her and her mother. After its world premiere at the Venice Film Fest, the essay film, with its mix of the personal and the political, has been a festival favorite, going on to win the Grierson award for best documentary in London and the jury prize ex aequo in Marrakech. It represents Palestine in the Oscar international feature competition.

“Succession” star Hiam Abbass will play a role that is the polar opposite of Marcia Roy in French-Lebanese director Danielle Arbid’s age-gap drama “Love Conquers All.”
The Palestinian actor — who in the HBO series played the third and final wife of billionaire Logan Roy — will next star as Susan, a 65-year-old impoverished widow living in Beirut. There, she meets Osman, a young Sudanese immigrant worker without papers. They instantly fall in love.
The “Love Conquers All” project is being shopped in Saudi Arabia at the Red Sea Film Festival co-production platform Red Sea Souk by producers Georges Schoucair and Omar El Kadi, who say this could be the first feature Abbass will appear in after “Succession.”
The idea is that, while in “Succession” Abbass plays the shrewd wife of a very rich man, in “Love Conquers All” “the protagonists are both poor,” El Kadi told Variety. “What Danielle wants...

Moroccan filmmaker Asmae El Moudir has made history at the 20th edition of Morocco’s Marrakech Film Festival as the first local director to win its top prize with her hybrid documentary The Mother Of All Lies.
Inspired by the bread riots in El Moudir’s home city of Casablanca in 1981, the work uses a replica of the neighborhood where it happened and figurines to explore the lasting trauma of the event.
The film world premiered at Cannes this year, where it shared the Golden Eye prize for the Best Documentary with Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters.
Morocco has since submitted the work as its candidate for Best International Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
In other Marrakech awards, the Jury Prize was shared by Moroccan director Kamal Lazraq’s kidnapping thriller Hounds and French-Palestinian-Algerian filmmaker Lina Soualem’s Bye Bye Tiberias, revisiting the story of her...

Asmae El Moudir’s “The Mother of All Lies” won top honors at the Marrakech Film Festival on Saturday, marking festival history as the first Moroccan film to claim the top trophy, while adding Marrakech’s Étoile d’Or to a list of accolades that also includes best director from Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and best film from the Sydney Film Festival.
El Moudir’s hybrid feature — which is also Morocco’s Oscar submission — finds the filmmaker and kin using dioramas and figurines to recreate and reenact painful memories set against the backdrop of the 1981 Casablanca Bread Riots, with the unsparing doc serving as art therapy exercise, family exposé and evocation of national trauma.

IDFA Winner Mohamed Jabaly, Director of ‘Life Is Beautiful,’ Reflects on Events in Home City of Gaza
Palestinian filmmaker Mohamed Jabaly, who won the best director award at documentary festival IDFA on Thursday for “Life Is Beautiful,” has expressed his sense of helplessness amid the rising death toll in Gaza, where he was born.
On Oct. 7, Hamas – a terrorist organization that has ruled Gaza since 2006 – launched coordinated attacks in Israel, killing over 1,200 civilians, and taking over 240 civilian hostages. Israel responded with air strikes on Gaza and has launched a ground offensive. More than 11,500 people have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Jabaly told Variety: “I have so much pain inside me, I don’t know how I am even able to speak these words.”
“If the whole world can’t stop what’s happening, to make a ceasefire…it’s just a feeling of being trapped,” said Jabaly. “Even walking in the street is really difficult these days. Just knowing that [loved ones] have been under the bombs for over a month,...

Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Evil Does Not Exist was announced as the winner of the main competition at the BFI London Film Festival.
The latest film from the Drive My Car director centres on a camping development at a village. The jury, headed by Mexican filmmaker Amat Escalante, said: “Subtle, cinematic and underscored by fully realised performances, Hamaguchi’s assured drama supersedes the sum of its parts. It is both a lyrical portrait of family and community, and a nuanced consideration of the ethics of land development.
The Sutherland award for best first feature went to Mika Gustafson for Paradise Is Burning, which follows three sisters fending for themselves after being left home alone. The Grierson Award for best documentary was taken home by Bye Bye Tiberias, directed by Lina Soualem, which explores the filmmaker's relationship with her actor mum Hiam Abbas.

Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi has clinched the best film award in the main official competition of the 67th London Film Festival with his latest feature, Evil Does Not Exist.
The enigmatic pic is Hamaguchi’s follow-up to the Oscar-winning Drive My Car and follows young father Takumi and his daughter, Hana, who live in Mizubiki Village, close to Tokyo. Like generations before them, they live a modest life according to the cycles and order of nature. A plan to construct a glamping site near Takumi’s house, offering city residents a comfortable “escape” to nature, threatens to endanger the ecological balance of the area and the local people’s way of life.
The festival jury, headed by Mexican filmmaker Amat Escalante (Lost in the Night), alongside Kate Taylor, program director of the 2023 Edinburgh International Film Festival, and English novelist Niven Govinden (Diary of a Film), described Evil Does Not Exist as “subtle” and “cinematic.

Hollywood stars can’t be very chatty amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. But the actors at TIFF — those whose projects have received waivers from the union to publicize their projects — have never looked better. At least that’s what you take away from TIFF’s own portrait studio, powered by Canon, where actors joined with directors to strike some stunning poses.
IndieWire partnered with TIFF to capture exclusive photos of 20 of the directors and performers who stopped by the studio, located at the Fairmont Royal York. Photographer Norman Wong adopted for a striking black-and-white aesthetic.
There’s certainly no denying TIFF managed an A-list guest list. Palestinian-French actress Hiam Abbass and her filmmaker daughter Lina Soualem touch down at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday with documentary Bye Bye Tiberias.
