For the longest time, animation has been hindered by a misguided notion that animated movies are meant for kids. Sure, there have always been popular outliers like the infamous Fritz the Cat and 1981’s Heavy Metal, but it was only recently that animation began to be legitimized by the industry at large (even if that’s mostly due to a handful of auteurs like Guillermo del Toro publicly defending animation as a medium instead of a genre).
Unfortunately, this means that plenty of edgier animated projects ended up slipping through the cracks over the years, with general audiences usually favoring family-oriented entertainment over experimental stories dealing with more mature themes. One such project is Shane Acker’s underrated 2009 thriller 9, a post-apocalyptic adventure that deserved more attention and pushed its PG-13 rating to the absolute limit.

Genre regular Eli Roth has another horror project coming our way – but this one won’t be nearly as brutal or bloody as the likes of Cabin Fever or Hostel. Instead, it’s some “gateway horror” entertainment that comes in the form of an animated series called Fright Krewe. Said to be aimed at “older children”, the first season of Fright Krewe will consist of ten episodes that will be released through both the Hulu and Peacock streaming services. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
The Wrap reports that Roth has teamed up with Dreamworks and author James Frey to bring this series to the screen – and they also point out that Frey is a rather controversial figure. His books A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard were initially marketed as memoirs, but it was soon revealed that large portions of them were either exaggerated or made up.

Bonnie Langford will reprise her role as Melanie Bush in the forthcoming season of “Doctor Who,” starring alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, the BBC announced Wednesday.
Langford joined the “Doctor Who” universe in 1986 when she played the companion to the Sixth and Seventh Doctors as portrayed by Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. She then went on to appear in a cameo role in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the Thirteenth Doctor.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be bringing Melanie Bush back. To be part of the exceptional cast, crew and production team led by the force of nature that is Russell T Davies is a career highlight,” said Langford. “I’m so privileged and proud to have been a member of the Doctor Who family since the classic era and to be included in the new generation is phenomenal.”

One of the greatest romance films of all time, Casablanca is also an amazing story about resistance and anti-fascism.
“Michael Curtiz’s 1942 film Casablanca is considered one of the greatest romance films of the classic Hollywood era. But as I rewatched it last night, I connected with its themes of resistance and hard anti-fascist take.”

“Tuesday, November 10 marks the 51st anniversary of the premiere of Sesame Street, the enduring children’s series that tackles topical issues filtered through the lens of its colorful puppet residents. Characters like Big Bird and Cookie Monster are the gold standard for innocuous childhood role models. But there was a time when the content of Sesame Street was questionable enough to get a contemporary ‘intended for grown-ups’ tag.

The internet is a really effective job creator, especially if you're a filmmaker just waiting to be noticed. Already, we've seen short films turn the likes of Carl Rinsch, Neill Blomkamp, and Shane Acker into feature film directors who were given the keys to a new ride after convincing some Hollywood types that they were ready. Though, to be fair, the results of those men and their efforts range from impressive to middling, and their careers are still in need of a bit of a jump start. If he's lucky, recently noticed filmmaker Saan Kesh could be the one to break the curse, and he's got an interesting concept to possibly strike it rich with: he's re-imagining Vincenzo Natali's Canadian sci-fi cult classic, Cube. The Hollywood Reporter has scooped the knowledge that Kesh, an up-and-coming filmmaker who's already got an iron in the fire with a feature adaptation of...

From low-budget dystopias to grungy horror, here are 12 shorts that became films such as Evil Dead, Twelve Monkeys and The Babadook.
The best story ideas are often the simple and pure ones. It's little wonder, then, that so many filmmakers and storytellers start by making short films - after all, if you can tell a good story in just a few minutes, you might be talented enough to make a feature.
Cinema history is full of stories about young filmmakers getting their start by making low-budget shorts. James Cameron famously made Xenogenesis, a sci-fi short which contained lots of things that would appear in his later feature films: a giant robot with big tank tracks, a cyborg, and a heroine at the helm of a hard-hitting mecha.

Plans still include a Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, though they aren't going to force it into production, but rather plan appropriately because he doesn't "believe the second or third film would have benefited from that strategy." Snow White and the Huntsman 2 is still in the works and it will focus on both Kristen Stewart's Snow and Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman, though director Rupert Sanders is not expected to return. Shane Acker, the director of the CG animated action film 9, is set to direct a new untitled CG animated movie based on the Dark Horse Comics series Beasts of Burden, which was written by Evan Dorkin and illustrated by Jill Thompson. It's a supernatural story that revolves around dogs.
Even though 9 was a little rough around the edges I still enjoyed the movie, and I've been looking forward to seeing what Acker would end up doing next because he's a pretty talented guy. This seems like a solid project for him to take on, and I hope it turns out to be a good flick. The movie is being produced by Reel FX, and the script is being worked on by Darren Lemke (Turbo, Shrek Forever After).

Things are looking a little more hopeful now, however, as 9 director Shane Acker is now on board to direct the movie.Created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson for Dark Horse’s Book Of Hauntings, Witchcraft, The Dead And Monsters, the story takes place in the small community of Burden Hill, wracked with supernatural weirdness.Things get so strange that a group of dogs and a cat band together to investigate what’s happening, in order to keep their human friends safe and, presumably, to pee on a ghost or two. 9 director Shane Acker is currently developing a new feature film project called Deep, described as an apocalyptic undersea adventure. The cool thing about this film is that it will use a video game engine to render the environment and characters, which will end up saving a lot of money. The filmmaker is teaming up with game developer Valve to make this happen.
According to Firstshowing, the story has the feel of an underwater western, and "takes place after humanity has moved below the water to escape nuclear fallout. The crew of the Norwood, a nuclear submarine, must find out the truth about the Wayfarers, a splinter group with the potential to entirely wipe out humanity."
This sounds like a cool story, and it will be interesting to see how this gaming technology helps the movie get made and what the final product will look like. Making this film on a...

Last year, filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg took the internet by storm with his short film Portal: No Escape. It turned Valve's popular video game into live action, and the results were fantastic. Now the company is teaming with 9 director Shane Acker to help develop new technology for an animated film this time, an apocalyptic undersea adventure called Deep that uses their video game engine to render environments and characters to ultimately save a ton of time and money while making a full-length feature. Plus, since it's being developed through a game engine, it's easier to adapt into a playable game once the film is completed. Evoking the feel of an underwater western, Deep takes place after humanity has moved below the water to escape nuclear fallout. The crew of the Norwood, a nuclear submarine, must find out the truth about the Wayfarers, a splinter group with the potential to entirely wipe...

Known for their inventive videogame series, stemming off Half-Life and resulting in such creations as Portal, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike and Left 4 Dead, Valve is beginning to step into the feature film business. Their Steam distribution service is currently making available their first feature-length film with the fitting Indie Game: The Movie. Now, Variety reports that the company is stepping into the production side.
They’ve teamed with Shane Acker, coming off his Tim Burton-produced animation 9, as well as the Irish outfit Brown Bag Films to develop a new feature titled Deep. In the action adventure, Acker continues in a post-apocalyptic landscape, this time following Wwiii with a setting underwater in fallen ships. The film will follow “Sullivan, a captain of a nuclear sub. He makes contact with a splinter group of superior scientific intelligence, the Wayfarers, which has the power to save the earth. But that could come at a terrible cost.

Shane Acker ("9") is teaming with Ireland's Brown Bag Films, along with "Half-Life" and "Portal" video game series developers Valve, on Acker's new action adventure feature "Deep" reports Variety.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, what's left of humanity shelters undersea in the hulks of sunken ships. Sullivan, a captain of a nuclear sub, makes contact with a splinter group of superior scientific intelligence who have the power to save the earth - one that could come at a terrible cost.
Jack Barton Mitchell penned the script for the $18.7 million feature which Darragh O'Connell and Gregory R. Little will produce.
Valve's tools and technologies, namely its Source engine, are being used for real-time rendering, editing, simplified character animation and economical lighting for the feature.

This is... unexpected and fascinating. 9 was an intriguing adventure that took a fantastic short film and stretched the story out far beyond what it could handle, but perhaps working with the storytelling masters at Valve will help director Shane Acker to flesh his next movie out more. Acker and Valve will work in conjunction with Brown Bag Films, a company which works on short films and various children's TV programs. The project comes with the title Deep and "is a...

On Friday during the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Darragh O.Connell, co-founder of Brown Bag Films, announced the launch of .Deep,. an undersea adventure set in a post-apocalyptic Earth with Shane Acker (.9.) attached to direct. .Deep. is an animated film unlike any other, produced by a team of industry all-stars including Acker, Ireland.s Brown Bag Films, producer Gregory R. Little and author J. Barton Mitchell, using new technologies that result in high-quality production value at a fraction of the time and cost. The project will be produced by Little and O.Connell.

Shane Acker, director of the excellent "9" animation is set to direct the 'Deep' undersea adventure which takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth. The announcement came today via Today at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival by Darragh O’Connell, co-founder of Brown Bag Films. It's great news for the talented artist, whom I was left very impressed with after speaking to him, as well as Tim Burton, Timur Bekmambetov, Elijah Wood and Jennifer Connelly for "9" at the San Diego Comic-Con. “Deep” is also an animated film - but apparently unlike any other. Story takes place in a not-too-distant future when what’s left of humanity has moved undersea to stay alive and revolves around the crew of the nuclear submarine Norwood as they race to uncover the secrets behind the Wayfarers, a mysterious splinter group with the potential to wipe out humanity altogether.

10.04am: Day three of Cannes 2012 rolls round. If you want to catch up with what happened yesterday (whenever that was), here's yesterday's blow-by-blow live blog.
But as is the way with Cannes, it's history already; all that's left is to pick over the bones. And that will assuredly be happening in the video we'll post later this morning, when Peter, Xan and Catherine run the rule over Rust and Bone, last night's biggie. We'll also have a gallery of red carpet pictures, featuring star Marion Cotillard and ice-cold director Jacques Audiard. (I've said it before, I'll say it again: he's the person I want to be when I grow up.)
So what to look forward to today? The line-up is perhaps a tad less starry that on days one and two: the competition films are Reality, from Italian director...

Shane Acker’s 2005 Academy Award-nominated animated short 9 was so impressive that it caught the eye of visual maestro Tim Burton, causing him to jump aboard as this feature film version’s producer alongside Timur Bekmambetov, who directed both the Russian Watch trilogy and the riotously absurd actioner Wanted. Given the popularity of the original short, there was hope that Acker’s feature length film might work as a lavishly dark antidote to the pleasantly colourful efforts from Pixar. While there is plenty to admire from a visual perspective – especially given the low budget – 9 sorely lacks focus and intrigue, and is a potent reminder that not all shorts, even ones as brilliant as Acker’s, will necessarily work well as a feature, even in spite of a lean, 79-minute runtime.
Where 9 succeeds is with the small seeds of narrative promise, though sadly it never capitalises upon them...

Winner of the best short film Oscar in 2009 for Toyland, Jochen Alexander Freydank is currently prepping his first feature length project. According to THR, Freydank will adapt the rom-com best-seller Macho Man for Walt Disney Germany.
The film will be based off of Moritz Netenjakob‘s novel of the same name, which tells the story of a sensitive German man who attempts to be macho in order to land a sexy Turkish girl. Friedrich Mücke (Friendship!) will star alongside Pegah Ferydoni (Turkish For Beginners). The Experiment‘s Marc Conrad will produce under his ConradFilm banner with Klaus Dohle of Erfttalfilm.
Freydank isn’t the only recent award-winning short director with the opportunity to make his way into the world of feature lengths. We reported just a few weeks ago that Fox has hired Jesus Orellana to direct the feature length adaptation of his own sci-fi short Rosa, after it went viral back in November.

Poster for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, starring Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell and Dominic Cooper/ Timur Bekmambetov's fantasy horror/thriller scripted by Simon Kingberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, based on the novel by Smith, opens June 22nd, 2012. In truth, I've never read this, but with such an oddly intriguing title, and Bekmambetov (Wanted), I'm certainly on board. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter tells of Lincoln's secret battle with the undead. It portrays the 16th president as a highly trained assassin of vampires. Also in the cast of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter are Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Alan Tudyk, Robin McLeavy and Jimmi Simpson. Pic is produced by Tim Burton and Bekmambetov, collaborators on Shane Acker's 9 animated film.

Chicago – Since the early days of cinema, trailers have always been the best part of going to the movies. Forget about the movies themselves. It doesn’t matter how good “Inception”, “Harry Potter”, or “Citizen Kane” is, no film can live up to that lovely shade of MPAA green which accompanies that breathtaking, legendary “The Following Preview Has Been Approved” title card. Why is that? Because films are finite.
Once they’re out there in the world, they can be measured, judged, and found lacking. But movie trailers – they’re delicious little bundles of unlimited potential. They exist in a world of pure sizzle, a realm where every day the filmmaking gods hand-deliver you polished packages of only the good parts in two minutes and twenty-five seconds or less. As trailer devotees, we here at HollywoodChicago.com are taking a look at some recent coming attractions and letting you know what we’re excited about,...
