Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino (Harper)
Quentin Tarantino wrote one of 2021’s most notable film-related books, a tremendous novelization of his own Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He follows that success with what just might be 2022’s best film-related books, Cinema Speculation. It is a collection of essays built around films seen during his adolescence that impacted him greatly. Some, like Deliverance and Taxi Driver, are canon. Others, like 1973 crime drama The Outfit, are not. The experience of reading Speculation is akin to hearing Tarantino zip through his childhood movie habits—the text mostly focuses on films...

Steve McQueen, one of Hollywood’s iconic leading men, narrowly avoided murder at the hands of Manson Family members the night of Sharon Tate’s death.
The actor, who died in 1980 at the age of 50, was meant to attend a dinner with his friend, hairdresser Jay Sebring, at the home of Tate in 1969.
McQueen’s former wife, Neile Adams, who was married to him at the time, told the National Post in 2017 the actor was only saved when he “ran into a chickie and decided to go off with her instead.”
“Going off with that girl saved his life,” Adams said.

For 100 points, what is the thread connecting the world’s oldest sports car race and Hollywood’s brightest star in the ‘60s and ‘70s? Other than possessing a near-mythical stature in their respective fields, Le Mans (1971) is Steve McQueen’s passion project, one that aims to become the definitive cinematic portrayal of racing and elevate the actor’s clout. Neither happened – the film cursed all those involved and altered the “King of Cool” forever. Documakers Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna have chosen that as the subject, and their final product absolutely deserves a spin.
If, for some reason definitely of the odd kind, the content of The Man & Le Mans isn’t captivating enough, know that Clarke and McKenna are interspersing previously unseen footage and sound bites with interviews with surviving crew members. McQueen’s son Chad, the female lead Louise Edlind, writer/confidant Alan Trustman, driver/racer David Piper,...

There’s truly no place quite like Hollywood. For the third straight year, the TCM Classic Film Festival was staged in the historic center of the world’s film industry. The event once again united a great community of film fans. The 2012 event celebrated style in the movies, from fashion to architecture and everything in between and lined up great films, terrific guests and many special events.
There were so many classic films to choose from over the 4-day festival, it was nearly impossible to decide what to see! Here are a few of my favorites from the weekend.
Auntie Mame (1958) .
Fantastically restored, and screened at the legendary Egyptian Theater, this Rosalind Russell classic was easily a fan fave at the festival. Even at 9am on a Saturday morning, the house was packed. The screening was hosted by two-time Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Scholar Cari Beauchamp,...

Jeremy Renner is quickly becoming the next James Franco. With the latter actor getting attached to a million projects, the former has the actual work to prove it. The Oscar-nominated star from The Hurt Locker and The Town is currently shooting Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol already completed. He then has The Avengers and is all but committed to star in The Bourne Legacy. And we can’t forget his attachment to Sheldon Turner‘s By Virtue Fall and his voice talent in the next Ice Age film. THR reports that has now launched a production company with partner Don Handfield and is already developing a starring vehicle.

In the new film "Breaking Upwards," struggling twentysomething couple Daryl and Zoe decide to address their relationship problems by planning and then executing their own breakup. Daryl is played by director/producer/editor/co-writer Daryl Wein, Zoe is played by producer/co-writer Zoe Lister-Jones, and the breakup in the film is based on the one the two went through in real life. In his director's statement, Wein says that the duo "thought it would make it more interesting to explore the nature of performance by casting ourselves in the roles. To be in the story, as opposed to having a fictional couple play us, gives the film a true sense of authenticity."

When you think of ultra-cool Hollywood leading men, a few names immediately spring to mind -- Clint Eastwood, Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin. But the one guy who probably deserves to be at the top of that list of macho men is Steve McQueen. The bad-boy star of The Great Escape, The Cincinnati Kid, and Bullitt would have been 80 years old on Wednesday. (He died at age 50 from cancer in 1980.) To help commemorate his outlaw career on and off the silver screen, Life.com has opened its vaults and unearthed 20 candid shots taken by photographer John Dominis in 1963, right after the...

Stars will make sure the cameras catch them at their best at the Oscars tonight, but 43 years ago Steve McQueen was caught off guard, and goofy, on the red carpet with his wife Neile Adams
The sky over Hollywood is inky, except for the glare of the klieg lights. If it weren't for the blue eyes of Steve McQueen and the lilac dress of his first wife, Neile Adams, the scene would be grimly and unglamorously monochrome. The whitest thing in this particular spectrum has to be the portcullis of porcelain teeth displayed by Mrs McQueen. The blackest thing is also white: the cigarette that dangles from the mouth of the man behind McQueen's left shoulder, who would be arrested as a menace to public health if he lit up at this year's Oscars. You can find a "memento mori" in every photograph, and here is a premonitory hint...

Since it's a glorious Memorial Day Weekend, Neil and I ended up watching Bullitt on Blu-ray yesterday, reliving the genius of Steve McQueen. Who else could make waking up look bad ass? No one. That's your answer. Which is why a biopic of the actor is such a great and terrible idea. We reported back in March that there were actually two projects in the works, one based off a memoir from his first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel, and the other based off the biography "Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel" written by Marshall Terrill. It would be fantastic to see a project shine a greater spotlight on this American icon, but the problem - as usual - is finding just the right actor to play the part. It would have to be someone who can pull the camera's gaze even when he's in the background of a scene, and...

Jesse Wigutow has been hired to pen the screenplay for a biographical treatment of screen legend Steve McQueen for producers Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writing deal is for seven figures.
Wigutow will adapt Marshall Terrill's biography "Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel", the film rights for which were nabbed by Cerenzie-Peters Prods. in January. The company will produce with Arthaus Pictures' Brian Oliver and Chuck Rock, who brought in the project.
Wigutow's script will trace McQueen's development from reform-school delinquent to the highest-paid actor in Hollywood and cover the star's obsession with motorcycles and racing, his drug abuse, his marriages and affairs and his hard-fought battle with cancer, which felled him in 1980 at age 50. According to the trade, Cerenzie acquired the cooperation of McQueen's widow, Barbara Minty, as well.

Jesse Wigutow has been hired to write the screenplay for a big screen Steve McQueen biopic, which will be based on Marshall Terrill's biography "Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel." "McQueen wasn't only the leading man of his era, he was the prototype for the modern-day movie star," Wigutow said. "Between the motorcycles and the paparazzi and his highly publicized relationship with Ali MacGraw, he epitomized fame and intrigue. When the opportunity comes along to really examine what makes a man like that tick, you say yes." The producers are looking to nail down a director and a star in time for a fall production.

Ok, I'll admit it. I'm part of a younger generation that doesn't know all that much about Steve McQueen. But apparently my elders in Hollywood are dead set in me learning more about that guy, now that there are two biopics in the works about the action star. We've already told you about the first project, and now Variety has announced that there's a second one planned, based on the memoir by McQueen's first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel, titled My Husband, My Friend. This is by no means the first time two battling biopic have been in the works. Recently both Gus van Sant and Bryan Singer were planning biopics about Harvey Milk, and now that van Sant's Milk is an Oscar nominee, it's hard to imagine that Singer will ever get his made. Now the question is which project can get going first, and whether we'll be seeing McQueen's...

Just weeks after a Steve McQueen biopic has been announced, another film about the King of Cool's life is on its way to the big screen.
Producers Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters have announced earlier this month that they are developing a film based on the life of the late "Bullitt" star.
Now, another Steve McQueen film is in development. Producer David Foster says he is leading a project based on the memoir "My Husband, My Friend," written by the actor's first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel.
Foster, who worked as McQueen's publicist before venturing into the film industry as a producer, is teaming with producer Kevin Kasha on the biopic entitled "McQueen." Roderick and Bruce Taylor are set to pen the script, Variety reports.
