In what’s been a fairly wretched summer box-office season, Oscar-winners Casey Affleck, Brie Larson, and Matthew McConaughey had some of the worst of it with “A Ghost Story,” “The Glass Castle,” and “The Dark Tower.” Casting didn’t drive those failures, but possessing Hollywood’s most-coveted award offered little or no bottom-line benefit.

Beyond creating certain mention in the first sentence of an obituary, the long-term impact of an Oscar is never clear. In the 15 years since Halle Berry won an Oscar for “Monster’s Ball,” her roles have ranged from decorative to derivative — a trend that continued with this late-summer’s release of the low-budget, don’t-mess-with-Mama thriller “Kidnap.”

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
“Everything, Everything” director Stella Meghie, who made her debut with the Canadian production “Jean of the Joneses,” isn’t just being modest when she says she didn’t expect to direct a studio film. The numbers tell us as much: Most female filmmakers struggle to get a second film off the ground, and the number of black female filmmakers in the studio system is vanishingly small.
In fact, Meghie is just one of 16 female filmmakers to have a studio-backed film hitting theaters in 2017 (that includes studio speciality divisions). However, it’s not Meghie who got lucky; it’s MGM and Warner Bros., since she might be the only person who could have made this movie.

Andrew McCarthy is best known for starring in movies like Pretty In Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, and Weekend At Bernie’s. But a few years ago he realized that travel had had a profound effect on his life and inundated an editor friend with clips until he got an assignment. Now McCarthy is an award-winning travel writer who has recently released his first Ya novel, Just Fly Away. On his book tour, he stopped by The A.V. Club to talk with assistant editor Gwen Ihnat about his current career, which includes not only his writing but also directing for TV series like Orange Is The New Black and The Blacklist.

Weekend Preview:The final, R-rated, impale-happy, Hugh Jackman-cussing Wolverine film, Logan hits 4,071 theaters this weekend and Fox's guidance is $60 million. The studio is pulling its punches (or adamantium claws) though as that means they think it's heading for $14.7K per screen average. In a weekend where its competition is the well-reviewed holdover Get Out, the Groundhog Day Ya film, Before I Fall, and Lionsgate/Summit's faith-based film, The Shack, Logan's prospects seem better than that.Since moving out of the X-Men Academy to make it on his own Wolverine has had solid commercial, if not always critical, success. The first outing, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine may have made $85 million its opening weekend (in 4,099 theaters for a psa of $20.8K) but it had a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 6.7 on IMDb, a B+ on CinemaScore and nearly knee-capped the Deadpool character for all time. It ended up with $173 million domestic, $193 million...

The “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” is coming your way May 12, and it’s loaded up with more goodies than a Poutine on the Ritz Burger.
This is not the time to be modern and go the digital route for your music. Hell, even buying the CDs isn’t old-school enough. Instead, if you buy the the “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” deluxe limited-edition gift box, that comes with three LPs (in “condiment-colored” vinyl?!), a Bob’s Buskers seven-inch white vinyl LP, a hardbound lyric book (for those times you need to know more than just “Butts, Butts, Butts”), a sheet music collection, three original posters and a lot more. What is “more” you ask? Take a look at the unboxing video below featuring Teddy’s hairy arms and mumbly narration to see everything:
Of course, the two-cd album is still chockfull of “Bob’s Burgers” audio goodness, which amounts to 107 songs.

This past weekend, Lionsgate released the horror film “Blair Witch,” a direct sequel to Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s 1999 smash hit “The Blair Witch Project,” to mixed reviews and an underwhelming box office performance. The film grossed $9.6 million on opening weekend, which was below expectations and the lowest for the series, even lower than the widely-panned first sequel “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2.”

Fortunes are reviving for The Revenant. After a stint in second, it bypassed the competition to hold the top spot of the weekend with an estimated $16 million. While it is a rough victory (this weekend is the slowest weekend of 2016 so far), Oscar buzz and word of mouth are giving the film some much-needed revenue here and abroad. In second this week, Star Wars: The Force Awakens needs no help as it continues to slaughter box office records; with an estimated $14.3 million, it still has a chance, though slimming, of pushing Titanic out of the highest grossing film worldwide, though Avatar still appears out of reach (yet it has handily defeated both films in domestic earnings). Meanwhile, in third place, Ride Along 2 took in an estimated $13 million, and looks on track to at least break even on its $40 million costs, though it took a massive hit in revenue since its first week.

On a night when WWE was going head-to-head with Monday Night Football and the Mlb postseason, you figured they'd put together a can't-miss broadcast. Alas, that's less likely to happen when Steph and Triple H run into turbulence and leave their show in the hands of the "World's Greatest Director of Operations," Corporate Kane. (Hey, like Roman Reigns said, "This is real life," right?)
So instead, we got lumberjacks loitering, Divas dissing and Dolph Ziggler channeling Chase Utley and fighting dirty against John Cena. But in the end, was there really much of anything?...

Weekend Box Office: Dreamworks’ ‘Home’ takes top spot, ‘It Follows’ makes big impact in wide release
Home, the newest feature from animation studio Dreamworks, won the top spot in its opening weekend, beating out competitors with a $54 million opening. The total marks Dreamworks’ first box office top finish since Mr. Peabody and Sherman achieved the feat a year ago, and the studio’s first opening weekend victory since 2013’s The Croods. The PG-rated Home was joined at the top by fellow new opener and R-rated Get Hard, as the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy took in $34.6 million in its opening weekend, good for a second place finish.
Among the rest of the films, the other big entry was the indie horror film It Follows. Distributors’ plans to forego a VOD opening this weekend in favour of taking the film to a wide theatrical release instead paid off, as the movie made $4 million in its expansion, finishing in fifth place on the chart with a $4 million total.

The top movie this weekend was of course Insurgent, part two of The Divergent Series earned an estimated $54 million. Divergent debuted with $54.6 million on this same weekend one year ago. What this means is that we are not done with Ya movies yet; if they continue to make bank, you can count on more and more being thrown our way, for better or worse.
The other new release this weekend was the Sean Penn starring The Gunman from Taken director Pierre Morel, earned an estimated $5 million from 2,816 locations. The film also has terrible reviews (14% on Rotten Tomatoes) and believe it or not, Penn isn’t he most likable of actors.
There was another Christian-themed movie that made its way into theaters this weekend. If you were a fan of Son of God, Heaven is for Real and God’s Not Dead, then you may have checked out Do You Believe?...

Katniss continued to kick butt at the domestic box office - though it wasn't as if she had much competition. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" finished at No. 1 for the third time in a row with an estimated $21.6 million over a typically weak post-Thanksgiving frame, falling 62 percent from last weekend - a drop similar to "Catching Fire's" 65 percent slide during the same period last year. The film has now taken in $257.7 million, making it the fourth-highest grossing movie of 2014 so far. It will rise to No. 2 this week, however, as both "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" ($259.7 million) and "The Lego Movie" ($257.76 million) are only a hairsbreadth away from being toppled by the Ya sequel. It's also within striking distance of current No. 1 "Guardians of the Galaxy," which finished with $332 million during its run. Coming in a distant second was Dreamworks Animation's "Penguins of Madagascar," which tumbled 56 percent...

Worldwide, the third installment of Ya rebel Katniss Everdeen stands at $276.2M. The other major global player, Interstellar, came up slightly higher after Sunday was officially tallied with $71.1M vs a projected $70M. There were no major fluctuations on the rest of the films in the marketplace apart from the usual adjustments. Next week, we’ll see Penguins Of Madagascar expand beyond the Middle Kingdom as well as the Horrible Bosses 2 crew conspiring in several major markets. Also of note, Paddington will steam into the UK on the heels of strong reviews and a little bit of controversy to add heft to this fuzzy bear of a family film (see below the original posts for more).

This season of “Saturday Night Live” has been surprisingly devoid of nostalgia, something I didn’t think would happen in this, the show’s fortieth season. But with former cast member Bill Hader returning tonight, look for that to change. And honestly? That’s fine. I have no problem with the show occasionally celebrating its own history, especially since much of the current cast was there during Hader’s tenure. Look for many of Hader’s classic characters to make a comeback tonight. Will there be a Stefon appearance? One could argue (and I would argue) that the Stefon sendoff was so perfect that any future appearance of the character would dilute that moment. But since Stefon did make another appearance during Seth Meyers’ farewell, anything’s possible. Something that’s not possible but definite: I’ll be liveblogging everything that happens tonight. Also definite: Many of you will rend...

Lots of high fives at the Sony offices today, as their don't-mess-with-Denzel-Washington revenge flick The Equalizer walked away with a $35 million opening. "We’re really, really happy, but we were very bullish on the movie," says Rory Bruer, Sony's President of Worldwide Distribution. "It’s a film that we all love and it just delivers in a big way. Denzel couldn’t be more terrific in the role – you can’t take your eyes off this guy." The movie's success—director Antoine Fuqua's best opening to date, Washington's third best—is a testament to audience's appreciation of Washington in tough lone wolf roles.

There is no other word except wow. I knew Sin City: A Dame to Kill For was not going to do well, but I did not see a $6 million opening happening. The sequel that took too long to get here is about to disappear after bad reviews and lack of interested by fans like myself. The movie was down a staggering 78% from the first film’s opening weekend! This is a remarkable fail. On the winning side of things, Guardians of the Galaxy climbed back to the top spot, switching places with the successful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Guardians is close to being the highest grossing film of the year domestically.
The other new releases this weekend had respectable openings for being completely unoriginal; the Ya adaptation If I Stay had debuted with $16.3 million over the weekend taking third place. The faith-based football drama When the Game Stands Tall earned $9 million and placed fifth overall.

Disney World's Star Wars Weekend is approaching! The annual event, which actually runs for a series of weekends in the Florida theme park, is set to begin next month. What better way to warm up for it than by watching your favorite Star Wars characters dance to pop music? These videos are from the (formerly) recurring "Hyperspace Hoopla" dance-off event, which was held at Disney's Hollywood Studios during Star Wars Weekends, and featured various characters from the films showing off their moves in hilarious fashion. After all, what's funnier than Darth Vader and a bunch of Storm Troopers dancing to "You Can't Touch This"? Or Michael Jackson's "Bad"? Or Chewy dancing to "Hey Ya!" Points to all of these dancers, not only for their dancing skills, but for their ability to pull off these dance routines in those costumes, which probably make it pretty hard to see. You'd think...

Young-adult adaptation Divergent ruled the box office this weekend with an estimated $56 million. Young-adult adaptation Divergent got off to a strong start yesterday, and is now on pace for an opening weekend north of $50 million. Meanwhile, Christian drama God's Not Dead is shaping up to be a surprise box office hit. Playing at 3,936 locations, Divergent opened to an estimated $22.8 million on Friday. That includes $4.9 million from late Thursday shows. While that opening day figure is nowhere close to Twilight ($36 million) or The Hunger Games ($67.3 million), it's still one of the best young-adult debuts ever.If Divergent plays like The Hunger Games, it will wind up with around $52 million for the weekend. That seems likely, given the demographic breakdown: the movie attracted more men than expected (41 percent), and was split evenly between those over and under 25 years of age. Combine that with an "A" CinemaScore, and Divergent may not be as frontloaded as its genre and poor reviews suggested.Opening at 3,194 theaters, Muppets Most Wanted disappointed with $4.7 million.

Saturday Night Live this weekend was hosted by the Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons, who did a fair enough job of shedding the persona of the geeky character he’s best known for playing.
'Saturday Night Live' Recap
For the cold open on Saturday, SNL treated viewers to Kate McKinnon reprising her take on Ellen DeGeneres. Much like when McKinnon debuted her impersonation, the jokes focused on the talk show host’s dancing and talking about herself – as “I’m Ellen,” once again served as a catchphrase.
Breaking from tradition again, SNL brought out the host prior to his or her opening monologue. In the cold open, Parsons played Olympic figure skater-turned-Olympic host Johnny Weir, rocking leather pants and a fabulous pompadour.
I’m Not That Guy
Parsons’ opening monologue tackled the major concern that many had with the actor taking up hosting duties – the perception that he’s Sheldon Cooper.

We open on Liv’s bedroom, where the newly returned Ballard (Scott Foley) is passed out on the bed, even though if I were released from The Hole, the first things I’d do would be shower, shave, and eat about 20 donuts.
Liv (Kerry Washington), for her part, is cowering on the floor, with this haunted, shell-shocked look on her face, like she just realized she’s out of wine and/or watched the season finale of Breaking Bad.
For recapping purposes, she’s helpfully remembering scenes from last week (in flashback-friendly black-and-white). You remember — confronting Daddy about being Daddy Command … getting choked by Huck … and “Ding, dong, special delivery. Here’s that battered, emotionally shattered husk of a boyfriend you ordered. With a side of garlic knots.”
She gets a call from Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), who says they need to talk about Ballard. She says, “No!” and hangs up.

Last week saw the latest Weinstein Company-backed biopic “Grace of Monaco” formally drop out of this year’s Oscar race with Harvey Weinstein citing the film’s incompletion for the delay, saying it “just wasn’t finished, the sound, anything.” While Weinstein promised a full-court press for the Nicole Kidman-led film when it was released, we’re not sure the film’s new date bodes well for the biopic. Formerly opening late next month, the Olivier Dahan-helmed film is now scheduled to open on March 14, 2014 (per Box Office Mojo) opposite the video-game adaptation—and franchise hopeful—“Need For Speed” and the Elizabeth Banks-starring rom-com “Walk of Shame.” Though Weinstein promised that the Grace Kelly biopic would be “even bigger than ‘My Weekend With Marilyn,’ ” we can’t really see that happening with movies like the Ya-adaptation “Divergent” and Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic “Noah” opening in the following weeks.

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

After writing thousands of jokes in my free during my early 20s, below is the first joke I wrote that was told on TV. Dennis Miller did it on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update in 1990.
“American Airlines announced a plan to raise cash: frequent flights traveling shorter distances. Not sure it’s a great idea. Starting tomorrow, every 15 minutes, you can fly from New York’s Laguardia Airport all the way to…. Kennedy Airport.”
Is that my best work? Is it the funniest joke ever? Does it even make people laugh today? I have no fucking idea (although my guess is: It sucks). What I can say with 100% certainty is this: Dennis Miller said these words on Saturday Night Live in 1990… and I still have the cue-cards to prove it. In fact, I’ve written literally thousands of jokes for Bill Maher, Craig Kilborn, Dennis Miller, Rosie O’Donnell,...

2012 appears to be the year for younger, i.e. under 10 years old, underground fests to blow it wide open and go for broke. This time it’s the 4th annual Oakland Underground Film Festival that is expanding its horizons into a blowout four-day, much more densely packed affair, running on Sept. 27-30 at several different locations.
Expanding on the types of films they screen, this year Oakuff is jammed pack with a wide variety of documentaries, thrillers, a bevy of short films and a special tribute to blaxploitation films hosted by BadAzz MoFo’s David Walker.
The fest opens on the 27th with skateboarding filmmaker Stacy Peralta’s latest, Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, which documents his own involvement with California board culture along with peers like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen. Following that will be Ya’Ke Smith’s complex drama about the effects of child molestation.

What my followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ saw today: • The Avengers actual opening Us/Canada weekend beats even the sky-high estimates: $207.4 million. Ya can't look to just ticket inflation and 3D/IMAX premiums to account for this. Something else is going on. Weekend Report: 'Avengers' Smashes Records • Nice. What If The Male Avengers Posed Like The Female One? [pic] • Um, no. Seriously, no, you do not need a masters degree to understand Doctor Who or Eureka. Also too: Are you frakkin' kidding? Television Programs You Need A Masters Degree To Understand • Provocative and terrifying: "The range of sites and services nibbling away at journalism is immense." Fungible: A treatise on fungibility, or, a framework for understanding the mess the news industry is in and the opportunities that lie ahead. • I agree with all this, but I think it misses one vital point: *wonder* is *spectacle* that you actually care about,...

New York - Last Saturday, NBC ran a re-run of "Saturday Night Live," but if you thought Kristin Wiig spent her night off from work going to some fancy dinner, throwing back a few drinks and messing around with her friends, you're...actually right.
But it wasn't all just fun and games. She was at Comedy Central's "Comedy Awards," which premieres Sunday night at 9 p.m. The second-annual event honors achievements in standup, TV, films and digital platforms.
The evening brought together comedic icons like Chevy Chase, Robin Williams, Chris Rock and Jim Carey, along with many of today's top comedy stars, including Jon Stewart, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Adam Scott and Maya Rudolph.
Since the show wasn't live, the nominees and winners are already easy to find. But it wasn't so much who won as what happened after they won that brought the real entertainment.

It was just announced that Will Ferrell will return to Studio 8H on May 12 to host Saturday Night Live for the first time since 2009!
Historically SNL pretty much lets Will take the wheel as host (as they should) and try out any character that comes to mind.

1. Alex Trebek
With ace impressionists of ludicrous stars (Jay Pharoah's Will Smith, Vanessa Bayer's Miley Cyrus, Nasim Pedrad's Kim Kardashian) in the cast, Will could have a field day with a new round of Celebrity Jeopardy!

As trailers and its stars saturate the airwaves a week ahead of release, The Hunger Games was dealt some extra, unexpected marketing on Thursday. With a little more than a month left until "The Hunger Games" finally makes its way to theaters, the full tracklisting for the official companion soundtrack has been revealed. Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars' collaboration "Safe and Sound" came out way back in December, and today (Feb. 13) we can hear the second tune from the album.
The Decemberists contributed the original song "One Engine" for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' Ya novel, and you can download the tune now if you pre-order the soundtrack on iTunes. Oscar-winning music producer T. Bone Burnett ("Crazy Heart") and composer James Newton Howard oversaw the music for the film, and the pair has chosen a great mix of artists.
Collins has said District 12 is supposed to be located somewhere in Appalachia, so the fact that there are quite a few country and folk artists on the soundtrack makes sense. Also on...

Part One: I Am Thirty Two Flavors
Other pictures from 2011 that The Film Experience's year wouldn't have been complete without.
Part Two: Honorable Mentions
The year's best movies stretched all the way from the creation to the apocalypse and everywhen in between; time hardly seemed linear in 2011 but immeasurably flexible instead. The year's best films also twisted and shape-shifted in scale and meaning, wrapping big themes around human-sized packages.
The Tree Of Life (Terrence Malick)
Fox Searchlight. May 27th.
I really didn't know that our Burning Questions columnist Michael C felt so similarly about Terrence Malick's latest so two somewhat agnostic appreciations back-to-back were not intended here at The Film Experience. I greatly admire The Tree of Life's grandiose reach (the creation segment being my favorite chunk) and breathtaking physical beauty but often I felt like I was visiting an impenetrably random museum installation. Reggie Bannister - One For the Road By: Jeremy Morehead --- Reggie Bannister is a man who requires no introduction when talking with horror fans. Remember in Weekend At Bernie’s 2 when Bernie’s body got half-voodooed so he would move towards treasure but only in a slouched pseudo-dancing manner and only while music was playing? If you don’t, Get The F**K Off This Blog!!! And The Earth!!! You’Re Useless! Useless I Tells Ya! Unless you are a doctor. Sidenote: That sequel seriously is just about the worst movie ever, isn’t it? Literally unbelievable that it got made. Anyway, it’s 2010 and obviously someone has turned “The Bernie” into a dance craze and there’s a video of it online. Enjoy! Well, nobody likes to admit when they’re wrong… although I should be used to it by now. Then again, I guess I can take comfort in the fact that nobody else ventured a guess in Friday’s Box Office Challenge, right?
It wasn’t too hard to guess that Social network did it again, but it wasn’t the clean sweep I was looking for. Sure, it had a respectable lead, but after its first weekend I guess I was expecting a little more.

Part Two of Our Four Part Interview with Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge
Okay Beek-Geeks, tonight’s the night you’ve all been waiting for… Martha makes her appearance on The Fabulous Beekman Boys. It is destined to be a good thing.
If you haven’t seen the show, let us catch you up. Brent Ridge is a doctor who used to work for the domestic goddess and Josh Kilmer-Purcell is a marketing exec and former drag queen named Aqua. In 2008, they gave up the calamity and chaos of the big city for, well, the calamity and chaos of a farm – the Beekman Mansion in Sharon Springs, New York.
There they grow organic vegetables, raise goats (with the help of their friend Farmer John), and oversee their own product line – Beekman 1802, which sells goat cheese, goat milk soap, and high-end crafts from local artisans.

The message for this week is that film critics don’t count since the two major films they universally panned, which opened this week, performed much better than expected. Not surprisingly, Eclipse leads the pack grossing $161 million since Weds (and $261.2 million worldwide so far). O.K. I understand that the films are made for teenage girls. Nothing’s wrong with that. But why do the films have to be so so…so…”icky”? Ya know what I mean?
The Last Airbender, despite, according to Rotten Tomatoes (and Me), being the worst reviewed film this year, did better than expected, coming in second with $57 million, which Paramount reports will be more like $70 million once the Monday holiday figures are in. Both Grown Ups and Toy Story 3 held very strong, Knight and Day is fading, but The Karate Kid which has already made $154 million, looks like it’s on its way to hitting $200 million.
