1990s sketch series The Fast Show is hitting the road for a 30th anniversary tour around the UK, and here are the details.
When talking about British comedy in the 1990s, it is impossible to overstate the impact of The Fast Show. With a plethora of characters that have successfully stood the test of time, the series itself stands up remarkably well to repeat viewings.
Although many of the characters were well known for their catchphrases – has anybody ever been measured up for a suit in the last thirty years without being able to resist the temptation to say “suits you sir! – there was a darker edge to the writing.
A good example is Rowley Birkin, a Paul Whitehouse character who is usually played as a babbling alcoholic. The final episode of series two features an unusually restrained performance, where the audience stops laughing and are stunned into silence as...

“Bitterness, really” is Paul Kaye’s explanation of what drove his satirical red-carpet interviewer Dennis Pennis in the nineties. “I’d hit thirty, I’d sort of failed as a musician, I’d failed as an artist I felt at the time.” Ambushing Hollywood’s elite in the persona of a brash, punk nuisance wasn’t Kaye’s first choice for stardom, he admits. “It wasn’t how I expected to forge a career. Of all the things I thought I’d end up doing, it wasn’t that.”

Talking exclusively to The Sun in aid of the charitable Goss-Michael Foundation, the 58 year-old Texan lifted the lid on the extraordinary times he shared with Michael during their 13-year relationship, touching on such heart-wrenching issues as Michael’s drug abuse, multiple arrests and tragic Christmas Day death.

The brilliant Caroline Aherne has left us, at the age of just 52.
Horrible, horrible news. 2016 has now taken from us the brilliant Caroline Aherne, at the age of just 52.
Her death was confirmed yesterday by her publicist. She had been battling cancer, having being first diagnosed with the disease a couple of years back.
Where do you start? Across her career, Aherne gave us the wonderful The Mrs Merton Show, wrote and performed for The Fast Show, and - of course - created, co-wrote and co-starred in the sublime The Royle Family. Her gifts for comedy had few equals.
But you knew all of that, we're guessing. And thus you more than likely knew too that she was an incredibly gifted comedy writer and performer, whose loss is going to be keenly felt.
Our thoughts are with her friends and family at what must be such an awful time.

In 1987 I was 20 and the student union entertainments officer for the Polytechnic of Central London. One day I was sitting in the office when the telephone rang. I picked it up.
"So Frank's playing tonight and our keyboard player can't make it and so we're going to have to cancel unless you know any keyboard players," said a frantic voice.
I cleared my throat. "I play keyboards," I said.
"Well you're in!" the man shouted.
"But I don't know any of your songs," I said.
"Wait a minute," the man said.
I heard muffled voices. He came back to the phone. "Can you play C, F and G?...

Charlie Higson has tipped The Fast Show to return in 2014.
The classic sketch series marks its 20th anniversary next year, and co-creator Higson hopes that BBC Two may bring it back for a one-off special.
"It's also the 50th anniversary of BBC Two, so they're going to be doing a lot of stuff looking at the history of the channel and comedy," Higson told British Comedy Guide.
"We will be doing something around The Fast Show - probably using the stuff we did for Foster's."
He added: "I doubt I will ever do anything else in comedy that would have quite the impact that The Fast Show has. You only really get one chance of that in your lifetime."
Paul Whitehouse, Mark Williams, Simon Day, Caroline Aherne, Arabella Weir and John Thomson also starred in the original series.

He's the tabloid whipping boy turned angel of vengeance; the TV comedian who's gone serious with his new film Philomena. At 48, Steve Coogan's career is going full tilt. So why does he have a massive chip on his shoulder, with 'mushy peas and a boat of gravy on the side'? Xan Brooks finds out
One rainy Friday in October, Steve Coogan takes a trip from the Lake District to an expensive part of London. He rolls into town a man in transit, still half-dressed for the country with a yellow tweed cap pulled down round his ears. The car ferries us through sodden streets to a private members club, where a table is booked in an upstairs room. But the hostess is stricken; the place has standards. She won't let him in until he takes off the cap.
It's fitting that Coogan doesn't pass for clubhouse material. His...

Plus, the cat’s out of the bag — and six feet under! Find out how Bonnie’s friends reacted to the news of her passing. (Spoiler alert: They did not take it well.)
Stefan (Paul Wesley) thought that losing his memory was a cruel twist of fate, but on the Oct. 24 episode of The Vampire Diaries, he discovered that remembering the truth about his checkered past with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) was far worse.
‘Stelena’ fans haven’t had too much to get excited about lately, so this episode — which found Elena jogging Stefan’s memory by helping him relive their better days — was actually a really nice treat for that side of the fandom. I forgot how innocent and easy their relationship was at the start of the series; they were just a couple of ‘teenagers’ in love, even if we now know they were pushed together by their collective destiny.

Well, it’s apparently finally happening. The It Crowd is getting the chance to close out. If you aren’t in the know, I suggest heading over to Netflix. The show is available as an Instant Stream, and it’s brilliant. This is one you’ll binge watch. If you are in the know, start celebrating now. Apparently a problem with scheduling has kept the show from coming together thus far, what with Chris O’Dowd being in everything, and Richard Ayoade being busy as well (well, yes, Katherine Parkinson and Matt Berry have other things too).
Whether it’s movies or TV, or any other screen, this is the happiest news in a while.
Series creator and writer of the Channel 4 sitcom set in a company’s It department, Graham Linehan just announced during an It Crowd Q&A at German conference re:publica that the long-teased special, which...

With their sitcom House Of Fools recently announced, we celebrate the enduring comedy brilliance of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer...
Readers of a certain age may remember the first time they saw Vic and Bob on television. For some, it may have been the 25th of May 1990, the fateful night "Britain's top light entertainer and singer" Vic Reeves burst onto screens with an absurdly fast, lounge-act rendition of The Monkees' I'm A Believer. In the background, his cohort Bob Mortimer looked on admiringly, dressed in the stovepipe hat and vast sideburns of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
For many viewers, this was a first glimpse inside the strange world of a comedy duo who'd already garnered a cult following in London pubs and clubs in the mid-1980s. Having impressed the likes of Jonathan Ross and Alan Yentob with their surreal, apparently semi-improvised comedy, Vic and...

It Crowd star Richard Ayoade and Royle Family creator Caroline Aherne are among the voice cast for new BBC animated comedy Strange Hill High.
Created by Josh Weinstein (The Simpsons, Futurama), the series will air on Cbbc and also features voiceovers from Doc Brown, Emma Kennedy and John Thompson.
The show has been created with 'hypervynorama', a new animation technique that combines Japanese vinyl toy design and puppetry with stop-motion animation and CGI.
Strange Hill High is based at an "all-but-forgotten inner-city school filled with fantastical secrets and outlandish mysteries" and will centre on the quick-witted and street smart Mitchell Tanner (Doc Brown) and his friends Becky Butters (Emma Kennedy) and class nerd Templeton (Richard Ayoade).
Showrunner Weinstein said: "I've worked in animation my whole life and I've never seen a show as groundbreaking as Strange Hill High. And when the ground breaks at Strange Hill, you never know what will come out.

I don't have that. I've just calmed down a bit, and that's only because once I had children I was so bloody knackered I could be nothing but calm." Though her audience has widened as she's written novels, appeared on panel shows and acted in the superlative comedy Getting On, Brand says she's planning to go back to stand-up. Armando Ianucci’s CV is fit to bursting with side-splitting stuff. If we’d forgotten, we got a reminder when he received a Writers Guild gong at this year’s Comedy Awards, and they played clips of his successes – Alan Partridge, The Day Today… It would not be overstating it to say that, along with Caroline Aherne and Ricky Gervais (arguably!), he has defined British comedy for his generation.
That’s right, British. So it was with no small bit of dread that I learned he and co-creator Simon Blackwell were taking In The Thick of It stateside, building on the Oscar-nominated success of In The Loop, and putting home-grown humour into the White House for Veep – describing the boil and bubble that go into running the smooth-looking machine of the Vice-President’s office.
