Community, Season 4, Episode 9: “Intro to Felt Surrogacy”
Written by Gene Hong
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
For those familiar with the brilliant Angel episode “Smile Time,” it’s impossible to view “Intro to Felt Surrogacy” without thinking back on Joss Whedon and Ben Edlund’s masterpiece. One of the many impressive things about “Felt Surrogacy” is how quickly it steps out from under that shadow. Given how frequently the fourth season of Community has employed high-concept episodes as a crutch, it’s somewhat ironic that the most ambitious episode to date would be the one in which it finally establishes a unified voice.
One of the things necessary for a truly successful parody is that—once you strip away the humor, the metafictive elements, the archness—it be able to stand on its own as a strong illustration of the very thing it...

Things got very surreal on "Community" when the gang decided to try the Dean's puppet therapy. This led to a full-on puppet takeover, as puppet versions of the character relived a very scare hot air balloon ride. It was something that happened on this ride that created an awkward silence in the group, and only the Dean could save the day!
Both Sara Bareilles and Jason Alexander appeared during their flashback puppet story. Bareilles was supposed to be the balloon operator, while Alexander was a Greendale alum who'd taken to living in the woods they crashed in. He gave them words of encouragement -- in one of the episode's many musical numbers -- and some magical berries that left them all tripping pretty hard.
It was during their loosened state that the gang apparently revealed some of their deepest secrets to one another. While Pierce was in the puppet sequences,...

When it came to this week’s episode of Community, the study group really felt it. Yes, viewers will get to see Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) and his Greendale pals as puppets in an episode that features the gang taking a balloon ride that crashes in the woods, where they happen upon a nice mountain man played by Jason Alexander.
Does the episode contain some Dean Pelton-led group therapy involving hand puppets? It does. Are there songs as well? Several. (Guest-star Sara Bareilles sings one, and Adam Levine co-wrote another.) Are you about to click on the video below...

The cast and producers of "Community" gathered for the fourth year in a row at Paleyfest to share insight into what began as a tumultuous Season 4, and the unsure future that is Season 5. Here are the highlights:
History 101
The panel starts with a table read, wherein the cast -- including Fred Willard as Alter-Pierce -- reenacts Season 4's premiere episode, "History 101."
The highlight was an epic tango between Joel McHale and Jim Rash, that exposed "so much butt crack" to the Yvette Nicole Brown and the rest of the cast still situated behind the table. Stay tuned for Hulu to post video from the panel. Zap2it will embed it here once it's live.
The Elephant in the Room

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. It wasn’t until the end of tonight’s Community panel at PaleyFest 2013 that the one genuine piece of news emerged, as a clip of the cast as Muppet-like puppets was shown to those at the Saban Theatre. An all-puppet episode featuring extensive use of the performers in puppet form will air in April and include a cameo from Jason Alexander (though not as a puppet). As the panel closed, the cast mates brought out their puppet lookalikes to revel in the moment. The puppet gambit is in keeping with a quirky series that’s already used stop-motion animation and other creative devices to distinguish itself. Earlier, new show runners David Guarascio and Moses Port focused on this Thursday’s episode that finds the introduction of James Brolin in a recurring role as the long-estranged father of star Joel McHale’s character,...

So we'll never see the Nicolas Cage episode, but an April installment of Community will a) be comprised completely of puppets and b) feature Jason Alexander as a "friendly mountain man." The announcement came at PaleyFest alongside some season four discussion (Jim Rash wrote an episode called "Basic Human Anatomy"; Joel McHale calls it "one of the best we've ever done") and a bit of Chevy Chase trash talk. Back to the puppets, though: Don't drop the ball again and miss this one, America.

Thanksgiving will double as Father’s Day on an episode of Community that airs on…. March 7. And what will this special holiday bring? The first sighting of James Brolin as Jeff Winger’s estranged father, William, who skipped out when Jeff (Joel McHale) was only 8 years old. In this installment of NBC’s community college-set comedy, most of the study group suffers through an unsavory T-Day at the home of Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), while Jeff and Britta (Gillian Jacobs) wind up at William’s place, where awkwardness and discomfort are also on the menu. “From the moment he opens the front door,...

“October 19th” has finally arrived. Updated, 1/7: Each year, the five broadcast networks develop hundreds of scripted dramas and comedies in hopes they’ll become the next NCIS and Desperate Housewives, or the latest Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. Fred Savage, Danica McKellar, Jason Hervy, and Josh Saviano in "The Wonder Years." Jason Alexander and Michael Richards in "Seinfeld." Mr. Cooper in "Hanging with Mr. Cooper." "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" will pick up Linkin Park's single "Leave Out All the Rest" as the episode title and theme song for its November 6 edition. This consequently makes the rock band, the first music act after The Who that has been featured prominently in the show's franchise.
The song, which is taken from the band's latest studio album "Minutes to Midnight", will be played at the beginning and the end of the episode plus becoming the underlying score throughout the episode. It will be the basic melody for Grissom's unresolved love to Sara who is back for the new season after quitting the crime lab in previous season.
