A project that has been decades in the making, the most expensive film in the history of producer Charles Band‘s company Full Moon, the stop-motion epic The Primevals made its festival premiere last summer and was given a theatrical release through Alamo Drafthouse cinemas earlier this year. A special edition Blu-ray release from Full Moon will be up for order in July (and there’s an Australian release that will be shipping out in August) – but if you want to check out the streaming version, you only have one more week to wait. The Primevals will be available exclusively for rental on Amazon Prime Video and Full Moon Features streaming apps as of May 31st, going for the price of $4.99.

"The whole landscape was breathing a sigh of relief. You could hear it." MetFilm has revealed the official UK trailer for a documentary film tiled Wilding, an adaptation of the book of the same name from Isabella Tree. The film is a compelling look at a dying landscape that is healed against all odds, going on to thrive in astonishing ways. The book describes the creation of Knepp Wildland, the first large-scale rewilding project in lowland England. The 3,500 acres wildland project was created in the grounds of Knepp Castle, where they torn down all the fences and let nature take over again. This almost seems like the British doc version of The Biggest Little Farm doc about a couple creating a sustainable farm in California. Wilding directed by five-time Emmy Award-winner David Allen, with cinematography by multi-bafta & Emmy Award-winning DPs Tim Cragg and Simon de Glanville. And featuring a score...

There were no clear Oscar signals coming out of the 31st Hamptons International Film Festival. Still, there were some admirable stats for the eastern Long Island event that’s a favorite with filmmakers and locals. This year Hiff screened a lineup of films that were 49% female-directed and represented 42 countries from around the world. The festival had a record number of submissions this year and screened 72 features and 46 shorts with eight world premieres, three North American premieres, 12 US premieres, 13 East Coast premieres, and seven New York premieres.

It's heartbreaking to think of all the movies that never made it to the screen. We keep hearing stories of projects collecting dust, incomplete due to unexpected tragedy, or a lack of funds, or a greedy studio executive cutting corners for tax purposes. But every now and then, a long-dead film is exhumed from the grave and is given new life to be enjoyed by a new generation of fans. Case in point: The Primevals, a fantasy adventure more than 50 years in the making that finally got to celebrate its world premiere at this year's Fantasia Film Festival.
The Primevals was first conceived in 1967 by stop motion animator David Allen, whose credits include the adult parody Flesh Gordon, Larry Cohen's Q – the Winged Serpent, and Alex Winter's Freaked. For more than a decade, an early draft of the script was shopped around to various studios, until 1978 when...

Review: My heart will always have a special place for the ingenuity and cleverness of Charles Band’s Full Moon Features. Famous for being one of the first independent companies to enter the home video market, focusing on creating weird cult B-movies with shoestring budgets and charm. Full Moon has a particular vibe that we all love, focusing on the horror and sci-fi genre through the lens of a dignified yet schlocky level of adventure. Band’s movies have a light sense of optimism and humor, even in his darkest tales, but The Primevals is a perfect example of the whimsical exploration flicks he was producing in the early to mid-’90s.

The Primevals Photo: Fantasia International Film Festival
I turned 50 just a few days before I met producer Charles Band. That’s not an age at which one expects to have conversations about films which started production before one was born and are just preparing to screen for the first time. The story behind The Primevals, showing as part of the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival, is all about defying expectations. The film itself follows bold adventurers, driven by a passion for science, who travel the Himalayas in search of yeti and get more than they bargained for when they discover a hidden world. It features stop motion animation which is itself an artefact of another age. After decades trying to complete it, director and special effects maestro David Allen sadly died, but the production team were determined to find a way of making it happen. When I ask Charlie to explain a little about what.

Full Moon Features will world premiere The Primevals at Fantasia Film Festival – in a screening that represents the culmination of a longtime dream harboured by visual effects wizard David Allen, whose career stretched from 1970’s Equinox through Oscar-nominated work on Young Sherlock Holmes and beyond.
Allen first conceived The Primevals as a vehicle for his stop-motion talents in the 1970s. He finally began directing the movie, which he scripted with fellow effects artist Randy Cook (The Gate), in the 1990s under producer Charles Band, CEO and Founder of Full Moon Features, for whom he’d brought all manner of beasties to life in Laserblast, Puppet Master and many others. Sadly, the film’s completion was scuttled by Allen’s death from cancer in 1999 at just 54 years old.
Now, at last, Band and longtime Allen associate Chris Endicott have seen the film to completion, and it emerges as a glorious tribute...

Canada’s Fantasia International Film Festival has announced the opening film of its 27th edition: Pascal Plante’s “Red Rooms,” about a high-profile case of a serial killer and the woman (Juliette Gariépy) obsessed with him.
“It’s a film of enormous emotional force, unbelievably controlled and smart, with a staggering performance from Gariépy. Pascal is one of the greatest talents of his generation in Quebec cinema and among the strongest filmmakers in the country right now,” says festival’s artistic director Mitch Davis.
“In a sense, it’s an unconventionally grim note to open a festival on. It’s a profoundly disturbing film. But I know the audience is going to be left completely breathless by it.”

In the very first Video Zone (the behind-the-scenes featurette attached to most of Full Moon’s films throughout the ‘90s) that played after the end credits rolled on Puppet Master II, Charles Band likened the independent studio’s movies to comic books. He said that he hoped to create franchises out of many if not all of them, to follow along with the various adventures from movie-to-movie, to even pair up and cross over certain characters. The comparison was made very early on in Full Moon’s run; this was barely over a year after the release of Puppet Master, which had been the company’s debut feature. Yet it proved to be more true than any fan at the time could have imagined.
Many of those series continue to this day, many of them have had crossovers—whether it be title fights like Dollman vs. Demonic Toys, Gingerdead Man vs.

In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and the rest of the cast and crew arrived on location in the woods of Tennessee to make a movie called "The Evil Dead." It wasn't always called that; its original title was "The Book of the Dead," and there were more suggested titles along the way. Thankfully Raimi went for economy, and the title we know today matches the film: Concise, scary, and in-your-face.
It also wasn't the first time that Raimi and friends had embarked on such a project. A year earlier, the young filmmaker rustled up $1600 to make a 30-minute proof-of-concept called "Within the Woods" to showcase his team's talent and raise money for their first feature-length movie. It is only just about watchable, but it is fascinating to see some ideas and techniques that Raimi would later use taking shape in the trial run.

Just last month, Evil Dead: The Game was updated to add the characters of Mia and David Allen from the 2013 Evil Dead movie. This month, it’s going to receiving the “Hail to the King” update – and it’s quite appropriate that the update is named after a line from Army of Darkness, because it involves the addition of an Army of Darkness-inspired single player mission and a character from Army of Darkness!
The new single player mission has the following description: “Castle Kandar’s Witch has opened a rift in time and space. Henry the Red must put her to the sword to save mankind.“
The Army of Darkness character who is being added to the game is The Blacksmith. In the film, the Blacksmith was played by Timothy Patrick Quill, who unfortunately passed away last year at the age of 63. It’s a nice tribute to Quill that...

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth didn’t get much attention when released here early in March of 1971. Only film fanatics obsessed with special effects had much to say about it. Cinefantastique magazine showed a still photo or two of dinosaurs on the rampage, and told us that stop-motion effects notable Jim Danforth, who we knew from mentions in Famous Monsters, was attached. We also learned that an animator named David Allen had worked on one sequence.

In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.
Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.
Originally intended as a single story that was expanded by necessity into an anthology, The Dungeonmaster follows computer programmer Paul Bradford (Jeffrey Byron, star of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn), inventor of a...

Though it’s often remembered as one of the many Gremlins rip-offs of the ‘80s, Ghoulies has its origins in 1983 (or a year before Gremlins hit screens), when producer Charles Band and creature effects guru Stan Winston dreamed up a film called Beasties about a bunch of small creatures wreaking havoc on a group of young people. It underwent some changes on the way to the screen: rather than Band directing as originally planned, the film would be helmed by actor Luca Bercovici, who had previously worked for Band on 1982’s Parasite. Stan Winston would not design the creatures, either; those duties fell to John Carl Buechler. And despite what its title might suggest, there wouldn’t end up being very many ghoulies in Ghoulies.
Instead, the 1984 film focuses mainly on a man (Peter Liapis) who inherits a mansion from his father (rocker Richard Des Barres) and ends up conjuring...

How to Get Away With Murder, Season 1, Episode 6: “Whack-a-Mole”
Directed by Bill D’Elia
Written by Michael Foley
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on ABC
Six weeks into fall and How to Get Away With Murder is the biggest hit of the new season and one of the most watched shows on television. Viewers are connecting with its potent mix of legal procedural, murder mystery, and soap opera. They also must be connecting with the character of Annalise Keating, a woman as complicated as has ever been seen on network television, and where the question of her likability, or lack thereof, is deemed completely irrelevant on the strength of Viola Davis’s masterful performance. Annalise is an idealist and a hypocrite, passionate and calculating, funny and terrifying. But is she a good person? The creators trust their audience’s intelligence not to even bother asking that question.

The latest release from 88 Films’ Grindhouse Collection label, Laserblast is a very early Charles Band production that, for fans of 80s Dtv productions, is probably one of the most notoriously “bad” movies to come from the Full Moon head honcho. Notorious in so much that the cover art for the VHS release (also present on this DVD) should be in the bad movie hall of fame… And so should some of the acting!
For those interested in a plot, Laserblast tells the story of Billy Duncan, a put-upon teenage loner who, after being bullied by two local teens and given a speeding ticket by two police deputies, wanders into the desert and discovers a laser...

Q The Winged Serpent
Directed by Larry Cohen
Written by Larry Cohen
1982, USA
Genre pioneer Larry Cohen takes a stab at the giant-monster genre with Q, The Winged Serpent, a first-rate grade-z schlock masterwork, which successfully combines a film noir crime story with good old-fashioned creature effects. The title refers to the winged Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, represented here as a dragon-like, flying serpent hovering over New York City. Detectives Shepard (David Carradine) and Powell (Richard Roundtree) investigate a bizarre series of deaths where victims have been snatched from high-rise buildings and dropped to the streets below, minus their head. After witnesses report seeing the flying creature, Shepard follows a lead that Quetzalcoatl has been brought back to life by a series of sacrifices performed by a killer they are also chasing. Meanwhile, when a diamond heist goes wrong, petty thief Jimmy Quinn (Michael Moriarty) hides out in the infrastructure of...

A creator without an audience is subject to the 'tree falling in the forest' conundrum. If no one is around to read, watch, or comment, it is demonstrably difficult to make a sound, even with superior creativity and skills. Many new media companies have recognized the importance of reaching audiences, and at Social Media Week, one of those companies will join three media outlets for a panel titled 'Finding Your Voice, Finding Your Audience.' That company is Quora, which serves primarily as a question-and-answer service but also helps brands discover who is reading their content and how they like to read it. Quora Head of Product Marketing Alex Wu will sit on the panel alongside David Allan of BBC, Mark Hughes of Forbes, and Geri Hirsch of Leaf TV. La Times tech reporter Andrea Chang will moderate.

Monster movies had seen their heyday come and go by the time Joe Dante made The Howling in 1981 and it seemed as if everyone had seen everything. However, Dante manages to create a unique entry in the werewolf movie canon with a murder mystery with supernatural creatures in it. The Howling still stands as one of the most inventive and fun horror films from the 1980′s and this stacked to the rafters Blu-ray from Scream Factory is a must have.
TV news journalist Karen White (Dee Wallace) reluctantly meets a known predator Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo) in an adult theater one night on a sting arranged with the local police. Things go from bad for worse for Karen when the evening ends in a seemingly fatal shoot out. 1981 was a pretty exciting year for fans of werewolf cinema. Not only did we get John Landis' masterful An American Werewolf in London and a decent adaptation of Whitley Streiber's novel Wolfen, but there was also Joe Dante's The Howling, which is a clever little werewolf flick with a sense of humor that still holds up pretty darn well after all these years. No, the special effects aren't quite as amazing as those found in the John Landis movie, and some of the film's social commentary is stuck firmly in the late 1970s, but given how seldom we get new werewolf flicks these days, there's always something to be said for an old one that can still deliver the goods.

The Puppet Master series is very dear to my heart. Discovering the films many years ago as a teenager browsing the shelves of my local video store, I have grown up with the franchise, following it through thick and thin, good and bad… I’ve owned every iteration of the films on rental VHS, sell-thru VHS, DVD and now, thanks to the good folks at 88 Films, on Blu-ray.
Following the release of the original Puppet Master back in August, 88 Films are following up with the two immediate sequels, Puppet Master 2, which expanded the roster of puppets with one of my favourites, Torch, and Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge, which many consider to be the pinnacle of the series and which has since spawned two related sequels of its own in the recent “puppets vs. nazis” flicks Puppet Master: Axis of Evil and Puppet Master X: Axis Rising (which...

Zac Efron has bulked up while preparing to portray a marine in a new movie "The Lucky One" last year. And now the former "High School Musical" actor shows off his post-training six-pack body while out and about in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Wearing only short denims and a pair of white sneakers, the "Charlie St. Cloud" hunk was seen enjoying a warm summer day and rolling around the beach on a skateboard in one picture. In another image, he was snapped barefoot and playfully hanging on a pole swing.

Yesterday, we examined Brothers & Sisters. This morning: Bones.
Best episode: For humor, the Jersey Shore-themed "The Maggots in the Meathead." For drama, "The Doctor in the Photo." This dark, compelling episode featuring an introspective Brennan contrasted starkly from last season's uplifting Christmas episode.

Part of what makes the horror genre so much fun is all the creatures lurking in the shadows. One man who knows that in particular is special effects creator Jeff Farley, whose work has recently been featured in "Camera Obscura", a new web series by Drew Daywalt that is currently being featured on Daily Motion as well as right here on Dread Central.
Farley, who grew up in Southern California, has made a name for himself over the last 25 years in the industry, working on such classics like The Serpent & The Rainbow, Shocker and Freddy’s Dead as well as modern cult faves like Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys, Evil Bong, and Parasomnia. We recently had a chance to catch up with Farley to chat about how he got his start working in special effects and his collaboration with Daywalt on "Camera Obscura".

Stop-motion animator and filmmaker Ray Harryhausen’s achievements and influence are incalculable. Numerous giants in the world of cinema have cited his work, especially in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958), as the inspiration for their career in films. In addition to two other pioneering Sinbad films, Harryhausen developed effects for and produced the feature films 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957), Jason and the Argonauts (1963), Valley of Gwangi (1969), and many others from the early 1950s through the early 1980s. However, his body of work, including personal experiments to work as the key animator on the King Kong-influenced Mighty Joe Young, stretches to before World War II to his first film, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms in 1953.
Turning 90 this year, Harryhausen retired in 1981 after Clash of the Titans and lives in England. His journeys to his hometown of Los Angeles to meet with friends, colleagues and protégés might finally be at an end.
