Emmy nomination balloting ends today for the 68th annual Emmy Awards. Cross your fingers that we actually get a few shakeups this year. Yes, cross your fingers even if you love all 10 of the shows that are normally swimming in nominations. Why? Well, the Emmys really should reflect how competitive television is and not suggest that there have only been 10ish good shows on the air for the past half decade plus.
Comment Party! On that note please do tell us in the comments which 3 of your old favorites that you still love you'd be willing to sacrifice for 3 who have not been recognized. Eric here, with a plea for Emmy consideration for a dark horse candidate for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy: Amy Landecker for Amazon’s Transparent.
Transparent is generous to all of its actors because it gives them dramatically complicated landscapes to play in with dialogue that doesn't always fill in those gaps for emotional transitions and arcs. It's the kind of hard work actors love to do. This is, of course, how we all make realizations in “real life” so the actors in Transparent are key to the delicate naturalism of the show, and the creative team behind them have the grace and intelligence to capture the work without exploiting their vulnerability.
Amy Landecker, who plays the eldest sibling Sarah, does wonders with an extraordinarily difficult character. In season one, Sarah leaves her husband Len for another woman (Tammy) in a sex-obsessed haze and a rebellion against her controlled,...

William H. Macy and Joan Cusack aside, “Shameless" has been criminally overlooked by the Television Academy for six years. No nominations for Emmy Rossum (praises sung here) who has been giving the best performance of her career. Nothing for Cameron Monaghan, who has given us one of the most raw and unvarnished portrayals of queer adolescence ever seen on television. Nothing for the series itself, whose balance of drama and comedy and depiction of what American poverty really looks like remain unmatched. In an age where it seems difficult to tell stories about family without a larger, high-concept twist, “Shameless” remains overlooked and underestimated, despite its aforementioned merits.
This past season, Jeremy Allen White’s portrayal of Lip, the genius eldest son of the Gallagher clan took a huge leap forward in what had already been five years of impressive work. Even amidst somewhat ridiculous plot points (Lip’s been evicted and must serve as a bartender/rentboy at a sorority house on his college campus. What’s a young, strapping cishet male to do?!) White managed to eke out his best work on the series to date as Lip’s arc slowly revealed itself in the latter half of the season. He manages to strike the perfect balance between wry and vulnerable as the character evolves and sees his brave face and defense mechanisms crashing around him...

After a strong season 6 opener, which managed to both please critics and act as the series’ bigger premiere ever, Showtime has gone ahead and renewed Shameless for a 12-episode seventh season.
“Shameless has clearly resonated with audiences as evidenced by their steady growth on Sunday nights over the past 6 years,” said Showtime president of programming Gary Levine.
Given how well the series has been doing for Showtime over the years, news of a seventh season shouldn’t really come as too much of a surprise to fans. Most people can probably agree that there’s still a lot of story to tell in regards to the Gallagher family and the prospect of spending more time with these beloved characters is certainly something that excites us.

Television history is littered with the bodies of ill-advised spin-offs. Their corpses, copies of reviews and overnights crumpled in their clawed little hands, defile the memories of the successful shows that spawned them and serve as cautionary tales for every writer tempted to go to the same well twice.
However, every once in a while, a spin-off is successful enough to Febreeze the funk out of the graveyard. After all, Star Trek: The Next Generation was better than the original and few people even remember that The Simpsons began as a segment on The Tracey Ullman Show. Now there is Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel that debuted to gorilla-sized expectations and has, thus far, managed to meet them. By both embracing its association with Breaking Bad and establishing its own slower pace around the sad-sack charm of Bob Odenkirk, the show has slithered out of a seemingly no-win...

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. B.J. knows full well that once his two only friends leave, he will soon be stranded alone in this podunk cotton town with one career option: cotton. When the three friends return home from their weekend excursion, Giff (Mark Pellegrino) is in the midst of a violent rampage, attempting to track down the stolen money. After another fateful decision is made, B.J., Sue and Bobby find themselves dangerously indebted to Giff. They are left with only one foreseeable option, to steal from Giff's money-laundering boss, Big Red (William Devane). As you can probably guess, that option does not work out very well for them. Drenched in pulpy undercurrents, Bad Turn Worse is a gritty neo-noir that is propelled by the life-altering decisions made by the three young protagonists. While subtly touching upon economic and intellectual disparity, the Hawkins brothers -- following the lead of screenwriter Dutch Southern --...

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"22 Jump Street"
Can Chris Miller and Phil Lord make anything entertaining? When "21 Jump Street" the movie was announced, it seemed utterly ludicrous, if not downright insulting. Yet here we are enjoying the sequel, digging on the continued doofy adventures of Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum). What's next, a dazzling movie about Legos?!
"20,000 Days on Earth"
This documentary about writer and musician Nick Cave is just as weird and wonderful as its subject. It's a must-see for fans of Cave's oeuvre, but even if you don't know a Boy Next Door from a Bad Seed, you'll get a kick out of this strange film. Featuring appearances by Kylie Minogue, Ray Winstone, Warren Ellis, and Blixa Bargeld.

Films gods be damned. After guesstimating its eventual arrival on the film fest circuit and tracking it since it first went into production back in 2012, I’m inclined to think that the shot in state of Washington production either hit a rough patch, needed a longer production schedule due to seasonal shifts in backdrops or, my latest theory: Robinson Devor concurrently worked on not one, but two projects: the other being Pow Wow, his latest documentary project. Devor began editing the film at the start of the year and as part of Park City fabric in the naughts with successive releases of The Woman Chaser (2000), Police Beat (2005) and Zoo (2007) – we may see the filmmaker double up his presence with You Can’t Win finally cutting the finish line ribbon. Cast includes Jeremy Allen White, Charles Baker, Julia Garner, Will Patton, Hannah Marks and Louisa Krause (look out for her perf...

In movies, small towns are too often populated with inbred, murderous hillbillies, but there’s nevertheless a wealth of interesting, seldom-explored and considerably more believable stories to tell about them. “Bad Turn Worse” offers audiences little that they haven’t seen in one form or another — small-town kids, dreams of escape and the interference of local criminals — but in the hands of screenwriter Dutch Southern and directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins, its familiar components come together in a unique way. A crime thriller rich with emotional resonance, “Bad Turn Worse” offers the kind of clean, elegant storytelling whose emotional impact eclipses the cosmetic horrors of its counterparts while announcing the arrival of considerable new filmmaking talents. Jeremy Allen White (“Afterschool”) plays Bobby, a recent high school graduate who is set to head off to the same college as his best friend B.J.’s (Logan Huffman) girlfriend Sue (Mackenzie Davis). B.

It was over a year ago when a movie called "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" impressed us at Fantastic Fest, leading our critic Todd Gilchrist to declare in his review that it "offers the kind of clean, elegant storytelling whose emotional impact eclipses the cosmetic horrors of its counterparts while announcing the arrival of considerable new filmmaking talents." It's taken a little while, but the movie has now circled back onto our radar with a shorter, punchier title — "Bad Turn Worse" — and today we have an exclusive clip that we hope spurs you to check this one out. From directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins, and starring Jeremy Allen White, Mackenzie Davis, Logan Huffman, Mark Pellegrino and William Devane, the story follow three teens in debt to a local gangster. Looking to square the balance sheet, the teens agree to rip off the gangster's boss, and as you might surmise from the title,...

Whenever anyone mentions Bad Turn Worse in the future, I’ll fondly think back on one of my new favorite heist explanation scenes, so cleverly orchestrated by brothers Simon and Zeke Hawkins. Blending the frantic nature of a first-person-shooter with cheeky criminal comedy, three juvenile robbers run though their illegal blueprints in real time, imagining exactly how the break-in should go down. While that might sound a bit oversimplified, the Hawkins brothers inject a little fun by having the two characters on camera react to any hiccups in the plan mid-scene, interrupting a hold-up with hypothetical questions only to direct their attention back towards elderly hostages after bickering about small details. The sequence is flashy, exciting, clever and memorable, striking a unique high note – a note that’s sorely missed throughout the film’s more generic existence.

Lost co-star Mark Pellegrino stars in this very dark looking thriller called Bad Turn Worse, in which he plays a very bad dude. We have the first trailer for the movie to share with you, and it seems like one of those crazy off-beat films that I would enjoy watching. Here's the synopsis:

The Texas-set neo-noir formerly known as We Gotta Get Out Of This Place has ponied up its first trailer as Starz Digital ramps up for a November 14 release. Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), Mackenzie Davis (Halt And Catch Fire) and Logan Huffman (V) star in Bad Turn Worse as small-town youngsters who blow stolen cash on a weekend of partying. Unfortunately, the sociopath they stole from (Lost‘s Mark Pellegrino) answers to an even scarier boss (William Devane), whose riches the kids are forced to heist in order to repay their debt.
Zeke and Simon Hawkins directed from a script by Dutch Southern and shot the pic on location in Texas cotton country. After it debuted at Tiff 2013, Starz acquired U.S. and Canada rights and set a limited theatrical/digital release plan. That strategy might work out well for Starz; between the film’s festival premiere and now, more indies...

"Sounds like game time to me." Just last week, we exclusively debuted the teaser poster for the Texas crime thriller Bad Turn Worse, the film formerly known as We Gotta Get Out of This Place, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. Now the film is finally getting released next month in limited theaters and on VOD, and the first trailer has arrived. This looks really cool, like a contemporary western, and the praise for a villainous turn from Mark Pellegrino sounds like that alone will make the film worth seeing. Mackenzie Davis and Jeremy Allen White also star in the film. Watch the trailer! Today we get to exclusively debut the official release poster for Bad Turn Worse, formerly known as We Gotta Get Out of This Place, a gritty Texas crime thriller that marks the debut of brothers Zeke & Simon Hawkins. The film premiered at Tiff 2013 and picked up the Audience Award at AFI, hitting theaters this fall. Compared to this year's acclaimed thriller Cold in July, the plot follows three Texas teens (played by Jeremy Allen White, Logan Huffman and Mackenzie Davis) who get caught up in organized crime trying to escape their dead-end existence in a cotton-mill. The film, produced by Brian Udovich and Justin Duprie of Rough & Tumble Films, also had a gorgeous hand-drawn poster for its festival run last year. New art below. It’s that time of year again, and as the networks try to get everyone as riled as possible for the upcoming fall shows, critics everywhere weigh in on the best shows from the previous year. The Broadcast Television Journalist Association (yes, that’s me) have announced the nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards.
I was honored to again serve on one of the nominating committees, and if you think it’s easy to make decisions about such things, you have to really try to imagine a bunch of critics going back and forth about what is, and is not, great television.
It’s going to be an interesting show, and there are some very solid categories.
I’ll give you a little rundown, and you let me know what you think about the nominations and who should win, and especially if you think people or shows were left...
