The Fabelmans
Production Designer: Rick Carter
By Chuck Parker
In Steven Spielberg’s film about his childhood and finding his identity as an artist, pictured above, the challenge for Rick Carter and his crew was how to tell the story visually. He used the Fableman family’s three homes as primary reference points, with their different architectural styles and decorative elements adding nuance as the family moves from one house to another — with each member progressing through his or her own story.

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this spring edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with HBO Max to take a closer look at the limited series ”Station Eleven” with creator Patrick Somerville, star Mackenzie Davis, and nine key members of the creative team behind the series finale “Unbroken Circle.”
Endings are hard for any television show, but at times the odds of “Station Eleven” pulling off a satisfying conclusion seemed about as low as, well, surviving a global pandemic that wipes out 99 percent of the world’s population. There is an episodic nature to the series: Instead of stringing out one single story over 10 hours, creator Patrick Somerville and team explore the lives of a far-flung ensemble impacted by a deadly flu virus. “Station Eleven” skips freely through time, from the first hours...

This story about “Station Eleven” co-stars Mackenzie Davis and Matilda Lawler first appeared in the Limited Series / Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Mackenzie Davis likes to say that her now teenage co-star Matilda Lawler “originated” the role of their “Station Eleven” character, Kirsten, whom they each play at different ages in Patrick Somerville’s HBO Max drama adapted from Emily St. John Mandel’s novel.
Lawler plays Kirsten as a girl separated from her family and stuck with a stranger on Day 1 of a global pandemic, and Davis picks up the character 20 years later after she’s survived a whole lot.
But Davis hates it when actors in a series share little notebooks of plans and character tics that cue an audience that we’re watching the same person. She’d much rather that process happen through “osmosis”—and fortunately for Davis, Lawler didn’t need any advice...

“I found it so incredibly moving,” three-time Emmy-nominated production designer Ruth Ammon (“Heroes”) reveals about the profound impact that working on “Station Eleven” had on her. “Especially being someone who’s on the road all the time for work, the idea of the traveling artist just obviously connected with me,” she says. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Station Eleven” was created by Patrick Somerville, based on the 2014 sci-fi/fantasy novel of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel. Twenty years after a flu pandemic wipes out most of the world, a group of survivors who make their living as traveling performers encounter a violent cult led by a man whose past is unknowingly linked to a member of the troupe.

If the human race were to go extinct today, what would the world look like tomorrow? In a few months? In 20 years?
The apocalypse question has given rise to a whole subgenre of television, which tends to frame it one of two ways. Stories are either forged from the wreckage of disaster-stricken cities or set in some distant future, lightyears away from the initial cataclysm.
“Station Eleven,” the HBO Max series based on Emily St. John Mandel’s 2014 novel, poses a simpler alternative: what if the apocalypse was just a giant reset button?
That framing – the way it collapses beginnings and endings, loss and possibility, life and death – informs every aspect of the 10-part miniseries, not least of all how it looks.
Production designer Ruth Ammon was in Budapest, scouting locations for another project, when she began working out her artistic approach. Taking bits and pieces from Mandel’s book,...

Production designer Ruth Ammon has worked on iconic films and television shows from “Drop Dead Gorgeous” to “Heroes” and “Smash,” but the one area she has long wanted to play in was space. Working on Amazon Prime Video’s anthology series “Solos” finally gave her that chance. She describes the show as “The Great British Baking Show of Scenery Design” because of how each episode required completely unique settings to bring its story to life.
Each episode’s set for “Solos” is such a focal piece of the individual story, yet self-contained as well as varying in size and detail. How did you approach the builds when it came to whether or not you could work on multiple ones simultaneously?
We had two stages and we did flip-flop: we built on one stage and then built on another and flip-flopped back and forth. The space pod was quite small, so...

Over the past year, production designers needed to get creative in how they approach their work on films or television shows. For Solos, that involved production designer Ruth Ammon adapting to a completely virtual art department from home. “We were building 3D designs,” Ammon says, “and we actually had a virtual reality designer who would take our designs and turn them into proper virtual reality sets.”
Solos, an anthology series created by David Weil, is an exploration of what it means to be human. In seven unique stories, different characters deal with isolation and what it means to be alone in uncertain times. They discover connection to each other in the shared human experience of searching for togetherness.
In the episode title “Leah,” Anne Hathaway plays the title character as she tries to discover the secret of time travel. Leah is a brilliant scientist with a laboratory in the basement of her mother’s home.

Ruth Ammon doesn’t normally come in on the second season of shows as a production designer, but for “The Alienist: Angel of Darkness,” set in 1897 New York, she was willing to make an exception.
Ammon picked up where Mara LePere-Schloop left off in Season 1, having turned areas in Budapest into New York’s Gilded Age for the show’s murder mystery, in which Sara (Dakota Fanning) reunites with Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl) to investigate the kidnapping of a baby.
Ammon expanded on the period-appropriate sets built by LePere-Schloop (who picked up for Ammon in the second season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), using locations like the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library for Delmonico’s steakhouse and building a meat market to visually enhance the show’s macabre and mysterious world. Here, she highlights key locations for the TNT series, which premieres July 19.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
