Judd Apatow didn’t want his freaks to disappear from Hollywood.
The multi-hyphenate writer/director/producer behind short-lived cult classic NBC series “Freaks and Geeks” was determined not to let the rising stars of the series fall to the wayside after the show’s untimely cancellation, according to actor Jason Segel.
“Freaks and Geeks” revolved around siblings Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and Sam (John Francis Daley), who try to make friends in their new Detroit high school in 1980. Segel, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Busy Philipps, Martin Starr, and Samm Levine rounded out the ensemble cast for the teen series that ran from 1999 to 2000. Apatow executive-produced the series, created by Paul Feig.
According to Thea Glassman’s new book “Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson’s Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television,” Apatow did not want the series’ cancellation to deter the career paths of the cast.

It's always been extremely difficult to get a television show greenlit on a major network. Creatives seemingly need to jump through endless hoops and pass all sorts of tests, and in the end, it can all come down to the personal whims of some executive.
It's hard to believe that a show like "The Simpsons," which has been around for more than 30 years at this point, also at one point struggled just to get made. While these days it seems like anytime show creator Matt Groening sneezes two more seasons of the show appear, bringing the first 13 episodes of the series to life took a lot of convincing on the part of the show's creators.
Groening, who was at that point best known for writing the comic strip "Life in Hell," came up with his pitch for "The Simpsons" somewhat last minute. It's important to note that there are those who dispute that claim.

Before "The Simpsons" aired as its own show in December of 1989, it was originally a recurring short on "The Tracey Ullman Show." After appearing occasionally in season 1, the popularity of the segments led to Matt Groening's "The Simpsons" getting a spot in every single episode of seasons 2 and 3. By season 4, "The Simpsons" were no longer part of the variety show, as by that point Fox had promoted the family to their own half-hour time slot as an animated sitcom.
Now on its 34th season (or 734th episode), "The Simpsons" owes a lot to Tracey Ullman, whose show got the soon-to-be iconic family on TV for the first time. It's why it's a little surprising to learn that Tracey herself wasn't that big of a fan of their original shorts. "Tracey was not fond of The Simpsons," said Ken Estin, a TV producer who co-created "The Tracy Ullman Show." "She...

It’s a common problem. A friend or colleague recommends a TV show to binge or a movie to stream but can’t remember if it’s on Netflix or Amazon or one of those other services with a plus sign affixed to it.
But a new search and discovery app aims to make sense of all the confusion wrought by the streaming wars, by helping users get recommendations from their network of friends, family, even brands or influencers. The first incarnation of Buffy spinoff series, Angel, was too dark for Warner Bros., according to its creators.
Angel is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year (yikes we're old) and to celebrate, Entertainment Weekly has put together a reuinion issue looking back at the series and gathering together the core cast to chat about making the vampire detective show, and its legacy.
You can see much of the content over here - and if you're an Angel fan it's recommended - but in one part of the interview, co-creator David Greenwalt reveals that they had to shut down production on the Buffy spinoff series in its infancy, because they were getting a little too carried away with the idea of pursuing a grimmer vibe than the Slayer-heavy show that spawned it.

Netflix won round one of the streaming wars, and with very little competition. But as several new services prepare to launch next year, the end game is far from over. Audiences are about to face more choice — and may soon have to shell out more subscription fees depending on their interests, as content is splintered across more services.
Disney, Apple and WarnerMedia are expected to unveil their own over-the-top digital services next year, and there could be even more beyond that as conglomerates realize this may be their last chance to get their foot in the door.
This coming rush of competitors might explain Monday’s news that Netflix planned to raise another $2 billion in financing via new debt. That’s not a surprise: Netflix has publicly said in the past that it would raise additional debt to help fund its rapid growth — just as it has many times before.

Garth Ancier is one of the few TV execs to have run three different networks, having headed up entertainment at Fox, The WB and NBC. He also spent time at Turner and BBC America, and was behind one of the biggest syndicated hits of the 1990s, “The Ricki Lake Show.” Traditional TV was once Ancier’s livelihood — but he’s not nostalgic when it comes to the changing ways we watch TV.
Recently, Ancier decided, like many consumers, that it was time to cut the cord — using social media to crowd source his choices. After plenty of research, he came up with a mix of over-the-top subscriptions to replace his old school setup: YouTube TV (with unlimited Cloud DVR), Netflix, Hulu (no commercials option) with Live TV, Amazon Prime, CBS All-Access (no commercials option), HBO Now, and Showtime.

Michael Egan, who last year rocked Hollywood with sexual abuse allegations against “X-Men” director Bryan Singer, former NBC president Garth Ancier and others, was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday. Egan was sentenced over unrelated charges of conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud, U.S. attorney Jill Westmoreland said. According to court documents, between August 2007 and February 2012, Egan carried out a fraudulent investment scheme by conning his victims to enter into fictitious business and investment contracts, promising that he would invest their money in projects including land development and television shows. He also lied about his financial background and personal assets to.

If HBO's Scientology documentary "Going Clear" is any indication, the American public is hungry for damning exposés on the Hollywood establishment. Enter "An Open Secret," a new documentary by Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg ("Deliver Us from Evil," "West of Memphis") that shines a light on the sexual exploitation of young boys in the entertainment industry. The film features interviews with such former child stars as Corey Feldman and Todd Bridges as well as Michael Egan III, the man who accused "X-Men" director Bryan Singer and several other high-ranking Hollywood figures of drugging and raping him when he was a teenager in the late 1990s (Egan's lawsuits were later dropped due to inconsistencies in his story). Coinciding with the trailer's release, the film's producers -- clearly anticipating that Egan's recent conviction for fraud and the withdrawal of his numerous lawsuits could potentially damage the film's credibility -- have released a statement...

Mean Girls goes 8-bit, Michael Egan dismisses second sexual assault suit, Utah and Indian prepare to appeal marriage equality rulings
As the rumored release of his second album nears, Frank Ocean has reportedly fired his whole team, dropping managers and publicists, all of whom have worked with the Odd Future collective for years. I always thought he could use a little distance from all the homophobic crap that comes from that group.
There was quite a bit of confusion on Twitter yesterday among gay activists as the Human Rights Campaign endorsed Maine Senator Susan Collins for reelection. Collins has been coy for years about her support for marriage equality, despite her support of Enda and repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. But in the evening she released a statement to a Maine newspaper that made her the fourth Republican in Congress to endorse marriage equality.

Michael Egan has dismissed his sex abuse lawsuit against former Disney exec David Neuman.
The plaintiff maintains his case against director Bryan Singer and two others.
According to documents acquired by The Wrap, the suit was "dismissed without prejudice" against Neuman.
Egan accused the four men - including former NBC president Garth Ancier and Broadway producer Gary Goddard - of abusing him and other boys in Hawaii when he was 17 years old.

The statement also claimed that there was evidence proving that Neuman was not in Hawaii in 1999 when the incident was said to have taken place.
Singer, Ancier and Goddard have filed similar motions to have the suits against them dismissed, with Singer seeking a summary judgement.
