Richard Price wasn't exactly the most obvious choice to adapt Stephen King's 2018 book "The Outsider" into a TV mini-series. Far from a novice in this area, Price had already adapted novels like "The Color of Money" and even his own books "Clockers" and "Freedomland" into films. But his speciality had always been crime thrillers and mysteries that pit their leads against firmly human horrors, rather than fantastical foes like the creature at the heart of King's story.
In Price's hands, "The Outsider" is less "It" and more "True Detective," despite the ancient child-killing entity at the heart of its plot. It's also a ghost story, if not in the typical sense. In a change from King's original novel, the show's protagonist, detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), is haunted by the death of his young son from cancer some years prior to the series' events. As Price saw it, this...

Here’s a fun little look behind the curtain. Back when HBO announced the release date of Richard Price’s atmospheric Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider, Den of Geek ran the news as an article, as one does.
Shortly after the article went live, representatives from HBO reached out to clarify that they weren’t categorizing the project as a “miniseries” as many outlets (and none other than Wikipedia itself) had reported but rather a traditional series. It seemed clear then that HBO had at least the possibility of multiple seasons in mind when it greenlit the show. After all, why wouldn’t they? Stephen King adaptations always tend to do well and The Outsider boasted a solid cast and an intriguing concept true crime-meets- the-supernatural concept
The Outsider would then go on to pull off 10 good episodes, receive modest-to-excellent critical acclaim, kill it in the ratings, and drive online...

Exclusive: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market.
The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on.
“We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason [Bateman], Andrew [Bernstein] and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline.

Photo: 'The Outsider'/HBO Richard Price’s new horror series – 'The Outsider' – brings a new perspective to adapted Stephen King content. The new horror series based on the book of the same name, premiered on HBO this January and has been a hot topic ever since. A series surrounding a strange murder, 'The Outsider' follows the investigation unit in a friendly Georgia town, as they run into the supernatural, unprecedented evidence, and outrageous theories. What once seemed like a straightforward case, quickly becomes a tangled web. So what makes this different from any other Stephen King adaptation? This series is driven by a group of characters so different, yet so similar. Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) is the little league coach everyone knows and adores. Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) is a trustworthy cop who is finding his way after the death of his son. And Holly Gibney...

Jason Bateman pulled off a shocking Emmy upset last year when he dethroned “Game of Thrones” in the Drama Directing category for his work on “Ozark.” Now he’s back in hopes of scoring his first win as an actor. Bateman competes in Drama Actor for “Ozark” but also has a thrilling entry in the Drama Guest Actor category for his memorable role as doomed Terry Maitland on HBO’s “The Outsider.” In his efforts to claim that victory, he has submitted the episode “Fish in a Barrel” for consideration.
Terry Maitland is a beloved family man in his town. As he coaches the local little league game, officers storm across the baseball diamond and place him under arrest for the gruesome murder of a young boy. Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) has amassed physical and testimonial evidence that Maitland is guilty of the heinous crime. During flashbacks of each witness’s testimony,...

Stephen King novel adaptations are not a new concept, but mastering how to convert the famous author’s work into a compelling psychological thriller was a task that HBO’s miniseries “The Outsider” was able to accomplish, leaving fans to speculate if there might be a sequel to the drama series.
After an exclusive screening, actress Cynthia Erivo, director/executive producer/actor Jason Bateman, along with writer and executive producer Richard Price, joined the Variety Streaming Room to reflect on adapting “The Outsider” for television. They also hinted at a possible sequel.
The drama miniseries follows a seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy, but after an insidious supernatural force edges its way into the case, detective Ralph Anderson and private investigator Holly Gibney are forced to question everything they believe to be real.

Cynthia Erivo has always been a talent to keep an eye on, but it was her role as Celie Harris in the Broadway production of The Color Purple which lit up the stage and caused everyone’s jaws to drop in awe — so much that she won a Tony Award for it. From there, it seemed like Erivo took Hollywood by storm.
Erivo went from Broadway to roles in high profile films of various genres including Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale, Steve McQueen’s Widows and starred as the titular historic figure Harriet Tubman in the Kasi Lemmons-directed Harriet which earned an Oscar nomination. She is also set to play the legendary Aretha Franklin in the forthcoming installment of Nat Geo’s Genius anthology.

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, “The Outsider” is a drama series that follows a seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy. When 11-year-old Frankie Peterson’s body is found in the Georgia woods, police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) sets out to investigate — with eyewitnesses and physical evidence pointing to Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), a popular high school teacher, Little League coach, doting husband and father. With the coronavirus pandemic drawing associations with his epic story of a flu-like virus in The Stand, Stephen King has been regularly sharing his takes on the current situation. Over the last month, King has both moved to reassure people that Covid-19 is nowhere near as deadly as The Stand‘s Captain Trips, as well as sharing some humorous takes on how the lockdown would affect his characters. While the author’s latest book, If It Bleeds, is getting an early publication this month, King is already working on his next effort. However, it seems that the impact of the coronavirus has changed his original plans for the novel.
More specifically, he’d intended his latest book to take place in 2020, but is now revising the plot due to the overwhelming effect of Covid-19 on daily life. Speaking to NPR, King had this to say about the difficulty of writing...

Think twice before betting against Ben Mendelsohn.
An esteemed actor respected by peers and audiences alike, Mendelsohn is one of those actors who digs deep into a role, and when he is given one as complex as Det. The most recent novel of Stephen King, horror/thriller The Institute, was only published in September, but the ridiculously prolific author already has another title on the way in the form of If It Bleeds, which has had its release date pushed forward a week to April 28th.
If It Bleeds is not a full novel, but instead a collection of four novellas, the same format as the likes of Full Dark, No Stars, Four Past Midnight and the highly popular Different Seasons. The stories are titled Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Life of Chuck, Rat, and If It Bleeds. Not much information has been provided about what we can expect from their actual content, although an excerpt released last year from presumably the titular tale reveals it to feature detectives Holly Gibney and Ralph Anderson from The Outsider, the novel on which the miniseries of the same name was based,...

The following contains spoilers for The Outsider episode 10.
Stephen King adaptation The Outsider just wrapped up its moody, and at times terrifying 10-episodes on HBO. That means we can now get down to the important question…will there be The Outsider season 2 on the horizon?
This seems to be an increasingly common conundrum over at HBO. As of late, the pay cable network is fond of introducing what appear to be close-ended miniseries that nevertheless leave the door open for future seasons. We saw it with Watchmen’s conclusion and now the question is raised once again with The Outsider. Or at least that’s how things look at first glance. In reality, there may be much more hope for The Outsider season 2 than there ever was for Watchmen season 2.
For starters, despite many assumptions to the contrary, The Outsider was never billed as a miniseries or limited series by HBO.

This The Outsider feature contains spoilers for the finale.
In the end, The Outsider’s slow burn appears to have been worth it. HBO’s Stephen King adaptation has always been a good, well-crafted show. But few would argue that its nine episodes leading up to this finale have been chock full of adrenaline-pounding moments

Can a gritty crime drama really ask viewers to believe in the boogeyman? “The Outsider” is about to find out.
“I hate stories in which on page seven the zombies are there, and by page eight everyone is going, ‘Oh, [sure], zombies.'” showrunner and executive producer Richard Price said in an interview with IndieWire. “It’s like, wait a minute — I don’t care if they’re a cop or a mailman, how do you get a normal person not only to believe in some crazy shit that’s not human — but act on it?”

The Outsider Episode 6
For a detective like Ralph Anderson, evidence is everything. As he says in the episode, if something doesn't seem to have a logical reason behind it, it's because he hasn't found that logical reason yet. His world view, by the nature of his job and by his nature as a person, has to operate in such a way. To Ralph, there is always a reasonable explanation for a criminal act, no matter how inexplicable or heinous. What Holly asks of him, Alec, Jack, Glory, and everyone else in the episode is something that Ralph simply isn't equipped to handle, no matter how much Holly's time line of events seems to be as solid as anyone's could be given the theory she's expressing.

HBO premiered The Outsider on January 12 and it serves another helping of Stephen King fare translated to TV. Just a day after Stephen King came under fire for Tweeting that he “would never consider diversity in matters of art. Only quality. It seems to me that to do otherwise would be wrong” in response to this year’s Oscar nominees not being inclusive for women or people of color, HBO presented a panel for the latest adaptation of one of his works, “The Outsider.”
King was not in attendance — he had never been scheduled to appear, even prior to sending the tweet — but actor Cynthia Erivo, who received two Oscar nominations this year, responded to the question about diversity’s place in not only the art but also the business of film and televison.
“Hopefully more work gets seen by people who are making really good work, and I feel like this year we had a flurry of beautiful pieces by people who are diverse in nature — black women,...

Stephen King's 2018 book The Outsider is HBO's newest thriller/horror series. As many of King's books are, The Outsider is a story of dark, supernatural horror packaged as a cultural critique of American society. This time, King's characters embattle false accusations, which lead to the fear and blind rage that instigate an aggressive mob mentality around communities. If you are a King fan, you will enjoy reading his latest work, because it is filled with his usual storytelling quirks and practices, like a mystery monster and several gasp-inducing twists. The book is also based in a modern context, with references to the current political climate, which will make for a good series.

The latest Stephen King TV adaptation, The Outsider, premiered Sunday on HBO with two gruesome episodes that set up the novel’s mind-bending mystery, while raising a gazillion questions. For those who haven’t read the book, the story revolves around the investigation into the horrific murder of a local child and “the mysterious force” surrounding the case. This was a meaty double-scoop of episodes, so let’s get to it.
Scene Of The Crime | We open with a man and his dog casually strolling through a park until the pup catches a sniff that points him toward a grotesque discovery.

The Outsider Episode 1
HBO, as networks, go, doesn't have a particular brand save for excellence. No matter what the show, HBO wants it to be good, and it wants it to win awards. For beloved critical favorites like The Night Of and the first season of True Detective, however, HBO succeeded wildly at both goals. From the opening overhead shots of a small, sleepy town in Georgia to the final shots of all involved looking wrung out and miserable, HBO's Stephen King adaptation The Outsider looks to carry on that fine tradition of well-written procedurals anchored by stellar acting performances.
The premise of the show is very simple. A local child in the community named Frankie is discovered dead in a park.

Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, The Outsider centers on a community overcome with grief when one of their children is found brutally murdered.
It's not King's first flirtation with crime, and like most of his work, there is an otherworldly bent to what's happening.
Although I didn't finish the novel, from what I've seen so far, it's a faithful adaptation. And with skillful filming and directing and a talented cast, it's a lot easier to pick up on the expected sinister undertones.
Ben Mendelsohn plays detective Ralph Anderson, the man in charge of picking up the pieces for his community in light of the slaying of an 11-year-old boy whose body is found in the woods near their Georgia town.
It seems like a cut and dry case when witnesses, video footage, and forensic evidence place local teacher and beloved baseball coach, Terry Maitland, at the scene.

In one way, adapting Stephen King’s 2018 novel “The Outsider” into a 10-episode series for HBO was old hat for writer and producer Richard Price. He has adapted his own novels for screen in the past, as well as projects including “The Color of Money” and “The Night Of.” But in another, taking on this project allowed the veteran industry professional a chance to achieve a childhood dream.
“It’s this combination of a police procedural that takes this twist into the supernatural without ever quite leaving the police procedural world. The easiest thing for me to write is the police world and ever since I was a kid, I’d always wanted to write a ghost story,” he tells Variety.
“The Outsider” is an almost 600-page tome that starts out seeming like a regular detective novel. Small town detective Ralph Anderson (played in the HBO series by Ben Mendelsohn...

Midway through HBO’s new mystery/horror hybrid The Outsider, a character buys a half-dozen lamps at a hardware store, takes them out to the woods, and dumps them in a field. The series doesn’t make room for humor, but this is a very funny moment, albeit an unintentional one. It’s as if the people making The Outsider — an impressive group that includes Richard Price (The Wire, The Night Of) as lead writer and Emmy winner Jason Bateman as lead director — want to make abundantly clear what contempt...

Having survived the end of “Game of Thrones” with buzzy new series like “Euphoria,” “Watchmen,” and “His Dark Materials,” in addition to well-watched new seasons of “Succession,” “Barry,” and “Big Little Lies,” HBO is preparing for its first post-Westeros year with a similar onslaught of exciting adaptations, enticing follow-ups, and shows skewing toward a younger demographic.
The latter point is perhaps more important than ever, given that 2020 marks another milestone for HBO: the debut of HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s all-in-one streaming platform that bundles its various networks (and their programs) in one app. HBO Max will have its own originals, but HBO is still the service’s crown jewel (as evidenced by those three telling letters right before “Max”). It’ll be up to the former Home Box Office as much as, if not more than, any other WarnerMedia network to drive subscriptions, and that’s harder to do without the No.

Of Stephen King’s recent books, The Outsider is notable for its blending of traditional Kingian horror with the mystery elements of his love of detective fiction. The novel was only released in 2018, but is already heading to HBO in January as an adaptation starring Ben Mendelsohn and Jason Bateman. In fact, the network have now released the first full trailer for the 10-episode series, which you can catch above, providing an intriguing look at a show that will presumably exploit pay cable’s content freedoms to bring The Outsider‘s gruesome story to life.
We get a fairly comprehensive look at the series’ main mystery here, that of how Little League coach Terry Maitland (Bateman) can be arrested for the gruesome murder of an 11-year-old boy, while appearing to have a rock-solid alibi. Mendelsohn plays detective Ralph Anderson, who has to figure out why different elements in the case don’t match up,...

HBO has unveiled the first trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider,” the latest Stephen King horror novel to be adapted for the small screen.
The 10-episode series, which is set to hit HBO January 12, will follow police detective Ralph Anderson as he investigates the grisly murder of an 11-year-old. Although authorities quickly make an arrest, the police soon discover contradictory evidence, suggesting their prime suspect (Jason Bateman) was in two places at the same time. Though the case appears simple at first, the show’s trailer suggests that events soon take a more sinister — perhaps even supernatural — turn.
Although investigators looking into a child’s murder might seem like typical whodunit crime drama fare, the trailer for HBO’s “The Outsider” makes clear that the limited series will retain King’s signature horror flairs. Mendelsohn’s character might claim he’s just looking for “facts, evidence, [and] dumb cop shit like that,...

You might be used to seeing Jason Bateman play the sarcastic straight man, like in Arrested Development or Game Night. But the Emmy-winning actor and director is also ace at portraying characters with dark and exceedingly creepy secrets, like in Ozark, The Gift, and HBO's upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Outsider.
In the series, which draws its story from King's 2018 novel, Bateman plays beloved family man and little league coach Terry Maitland who is accused of raping and slaughtering a young boy in his small town when Detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) finds his prints all over the murder scene. But, in addition to Terrence's insistence that he's innocent, the police start finding striking inconsistencies surrounding the crime that just aren't adding up. Did Terry really commit such a heinous act? Or is someone - or something - else responsible?

HBO's TV adaptation of Stephen King novel The Outsider showcases a crime drama with a supernatural horror twist.
Stephen King’s novel The Outsider is becoming a drama series at HBO, which has given the adaptation a 10-episode order.
The story of The Outsider puts a mind-blowingly monstrous twist on traditional murder fiction. Here, police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn) fields an investigation in the fictional Oklahoma town of Flint City that upends the local populace when a well-liked local man, Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman), is arrested for the shockingly malicious murder of an 11-year-old boy. While a mountain of evidence – including DNA and fingerprints – make the case seem open-and-shut, Maitland vehemently swears his innocence; an idea that gains momentum when his alibi – of being out of town at a conference – checks out, leading the investigation to a potentially supernatural turn.

Media Rights Capital wasted no time in snatching up the right to Stephen King's latest novel The Outsider. King's work is really hot right now and there are a ton of projects in development based on his stories.
Mrc, who is also a part of The Dark Tower adaptation, is planning a 10-episode limited series adaptation, and they have hired Richard Price to write it. He is best known for his work on HBO's The Wire and The Night Of. With him on board, you know that this series has a solid chance of being great.
If you're not familiar with the story yet, here's the book description:
An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.
An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park.

Deadline reports that King's The Outsider has been optioned for the screen by Media Rights Capital (Mrc). The adaptation is being planned as a 10-episode limited series with author and screenwriter Richard Price set to write the script.

Even though it has been more than a decade since his so-called retirement, the king of storytelling is still hard at work. Stephen King is a household name and has been since the early 80’s. His novel’s and movies have been been read and seen by millions. Just last year the movie It, based off of his book of the same name, had a worldwide gross of $700 million. Due to the success of the film, It is getting a sequel. The “king” of horror has an all-new novel coming out later this month called “The Outsider”.
The synopsis of the novel:

The age of Stephen King movies and TV series is here! Here are all the King projects, both for big and small screens, in the works!
