- Opera singer.
- He was the principal bass with the English National Opera for 15 years.
- As a youth, he sang in church, and appeared at festivals organized by the Royal School of Church Music. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He took second prize in the Kathleen Ferrier competition in 1964, and won the Richard Tauber prize the following year before spending a year at the Vienna State Academy.
- He made his professional debut in the role of Lodovico in Otello for Scottish Opera in 1966.
