Cannes is getting into the remake business.
The Cannes film market, the Marché du Film, is launching a one-day event focused entirely on remakes and local-language adaptations of existing titles.
Together with the Cnc, the French national film board, and with support from Spain’s Institute of Cinematography & Audiovisual Arts (Icaa), Italy’s Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual-Italian Ministry of Culture (Dgca-MiC) and Rome-based studio Cinecittà, the Cannes market will host Cannes Remakes, a one-day event on May 20 highlighting handpicked European IP ready for new film adaptations.
The inaugural program will include a pitching session presenting a curated selection of IP titles from France, Spain and Italy judged to have the most potential for film adaptation. This pitching will be followed by a series of pre-arranged one-on-one meetings between IP holders and producers capped by an invite-only networking cocktail on the Cnc Beach.

After nearly 35 years, the "Predator" franchise is still going strong. Despite a fair share of disappointment during its seven-film (and counting) run, every decade produces a strong chapter that reinvigorates interest in the mysterious alien hunters. John McTiernan's muscle-bound 1987 creature feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger remains the best. Still, more recent offerings like Nimród Antal's 2010 sequel "Predators" and Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 prequel "Prey" have closed the gap and provided hope for future entries.
Delightfully R-rated, the "Predator" series follows a group of elite alien warriors, brought to life with incredible special effects, who venture to different planets to test themselves against the best killers they can find. Curiously, none of the films have allowed a Predator to claim victory over their most formidable foes, though they do enjoy minor victories that make way for some nasty spine-ripping action. To date, we've seen Predator eliminate its victims in various ways...

Liam Neeson is the gravel-voiced titan of action cinema. Known for his ability to hunt his enemies to death, Neeson has thrilled audiences for years. Beyond the exhausting chase and explosive encounters, lies a deep well of respect and loyalty, particularly towards fellow actors, including fellow Irishman Jamie Dornan.
A still from Nimród Antal’s Retribution
Yet, despite this connection, Neeson has revealed he never watched the “Fifty Shades of Grey” that propelled Dornan to international fame. While he truly respects Dornan, he does have a valid reason never to watch the steamy film series.

It's not mentioned out loud in any of the movies, but the alien species in the "Predator" series is called the Yautja, pronounced "Yah-oot-Cha." Although there have been comics and other pieces of expanded universe ephemera to explain where the Yautja come from and what their civilization might be like, the movies have depicted them merely as a species of intergalactic hunters that have arranged their entire society around the challenge of hunting for sport. They could have a rich arts community back on their homeworld, or perhaps a stirring and complicated political culture, but we've only ever seen the hunting part of their society. Perhaps the hunters are merely wealthy weekend warriors who can afford to go game hunting on other planets, while other Yaujta protest their wasteful brutality.
Throughout their multiple film appearances, the Yautja have mostly hunted humans, although there are two notorious films from the 2000s...

From Robert Johnson’s alleged deal with the devil to Alice Cooper’s monster-filled performances, rock ‘n roll has always had a foot in the horror genre. Hell, even the world’s most successful metal band has some horror-inspired hits up its sleeves, with eerie songs like The Call of Ktulu and The Thing That Should Not Be adding some Lovecraftian flavor to Metallica’s discography.
That’s why it makes sense that a narrative concert film produced by Metallica would also borrow from some of their favorite genre thrills. And with Nimród Antal’s experimental masterpiece Metallica: Through the Never celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, I’d like to take this opportunity to dive into how this unique film uses its genre influences to tell a surprisingly compelling story accompanied by one of the band’s best live performances.

Metallica is, without question, one of the biggest music acts in history. They've sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and have played on every single continent -- yes, even Antarctica. Not bad for a thrash metal band that seemingly had very little commercial upside and originally tried to call their first album "Metal Up Your Ass." In 2013, after more than 30 years of conquering the music industry, Metallica set its sights on conquering the big screen with a wildly ambitious concert film. Unfortunately for James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo, the venture proved to be arguably the biggest financial misfire of their storied career.

Liam Neeson’s new action-thriller film ‘Retribution’ is a high octane adrenaline rush. Liam starred alongside veteran actor Matthew Modine in the Nimrod Antal directorial, which was a magical experience for Nimrod, who said working with the two was like dealing with two kings of their craft.
Talking about working with Liam and Matthew, director Nimrod said: “We are talking about two men that I have been a fan of before I ever had an opportunity to be a colleague. They say you don’t want to meet your heroes, but, you know, sometimes you do. With Matthew and Liam, there’s an incredible warmth between them, but you’re also dealing with two kings of the craft.
“It’s pretty magical for me. When I have people of this caliber, it elevates my game and makes me very conscientious when it comes to my role. These guys really do hear what directors are saying.

Plot: A businessman (Liam Neeson) is trapped in his car with his two kids by a mysterious caller who warns him that there’s a bomb under his seat that will go off if anyone tries to exit the vehicle.
Review: Remember when Liam Neeson said he was giving up action movies a few years ago? Many think he wasn’t being serious, but watching his latest, Retribution, I’m almost thinking he was telling the truth as there’s so little going on here in the way of physical action that you could almost call this an “inaction” movie. Indeed, Neeson spends 95% of the running time comfortably seated behind the wheel of his car, making this less taxing than the brawnier movies that made him a late-in-life action star.
As usual, Neeson’s latter-era movies are a mixed bag. I was fond of his recent film noir, Marlowe, and...

“Retribution,” the latest action film from Liam Neeson, hit theaters Friday, and the reviews have been harsh, with some critics calling the film a “paycheck movie,” and that the film is “devoid of thrills, excitement, or purpose.”
“Maybe it’s time for Liam Neeson to retire from the action-movie game,” Rolling Stone posed with its headline.
At press time, the film ranked as rotten on Rotten Tomatoes‘ aggregated ratings, with a dismal 30% score based off of 40 reviews.
Vulture critic Bilge Ebiri wrote, “This is a paycheck movie, to be sure, the kind of direct-to-video title that gets a theatrical release because the lead actor still has star power. But he and his director have earned that paycheck.”
Rogerebert.com critic Peter Sobczynski, meanwhile, took a harsher stance. “A film so devoid of thrills, excitement, or purpose that it seems to have been custom-made to play in empty multiplexes during the...

In the new booming action-thriller spectacle ‘Retribution’, Liam Neeson will once again don the avatar of the desperate father once again after ‘Taken’ – Matt Turner. Talking about the film, Neeson called it a very thematically engaging concept. The movie will showcase the character of Matt Turner, a seemingly simple well-off man driving his kids on the road when a mysterious caller tells him to keep driving, or else he will blow up his car and kill everyone inside, all the while the timer on the bomb is ticking.
Forcing him into an unforeseen situation, Matt is forced to abandon all that he knows and loves and begin a wild goose chase to get to the truth all the while trying desperately to save his family.

Wholly possible that it was a script kicking around since the mid-2000s pitched as “Speed meets Phone Booth” with a few hence-added references to “the dark web” and “crypto accounts,” the new Liam Neeson thriller Retribution likely won’t surprise anyone. It’s at least notable for bearing the return of sturdy journeyman Nimrod Antal to English-language thrillers (Neeson’s go-to director Jaume Collet-Serra serves instead as producer this time), and certainly shows a more competent hand behind the camera than that of the Blacklight variety.
This time we see Neeson as the generically named Matt Turner, an American businessman or hedge fund guy or something of that ilk (his boss played by Matthew Modine calls him “a credit to capitalism”) living in a modernist Berlin house with his family. No wonder the writers are on strike.
Being forced to try to bring freshness to the same tired ideas over and over to get some studio work must be frustrating. I would be picketing Lionsgate (which is behind this movie) just because it’s really not easy making this kind of thing original. The latest ripoff — and it literally is because it comes from the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, which itself has been remade more than once in the past few years — is the Liam Neeson-starring Retribution. A better title might be Generic Neeson #9. I even looked up the title on IMDb just to make sure this was a new Neeson movie.
This is not to say that Regurgitation, er, I mean Retribution isn’t effectively made. Its director, the talented Nimród Antal (Control), does what he can to make Christopher Salmanpour’s (basically a TV procedural writer) by-the-numbers...

After two dismal weekends at the box office, any chance of things recovering for the last weekend of August doesn’t seem likely, although one daring movie (and this year’s “National Cinema Day“) will try to make an impact. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
On Sunday, August 27, many North American theaters will be offering $4 movie tickets in hopes of keeping the burst of movie attendance thanks to “Barbenheimer” going into September. It will be hard to tell what sort of effect it has this year, because studio estimates on Sunday might not be able to account for any bump from National Cinema Day.
With that in mind, Sony is releasing the racing movie “Gran Turismo,” which isn’t based on the Sony Playstation driving simulator as much as it tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, as played by Archie Madekwe (“Midsommar”), a gamer whose...

Pop quiz, hot shot! There's a bomb in Liam Neeson's car! What do you do?!
What if someone remade "Speed" and removed all the stuff that made that movie so exciting? The result might be "Retribution," Nimród Antal's monotonous thriller that finds Liam Neeson doing his usual Liam Neeson thing yet again. Neeson, who went from professorial roles to an unlikely action star, can play this sort of part in his sleep at this point, and he certainly seems sleepy here, growling unconvincing dialogue as he speeds around in a car wired to explode. Yes, just like "Speed," a mad bomber has planted a device in a vehicle, and if a certain set of rules aren't followed, that bomb will explode.

Nimród Antal’s Retribution revolves around a hard-nosed financier, Matt Turner (Liam Neeson), for whom phone calls translate into money. In the rare moments where he isn’t trying to talk a client into a juicy new investment, he’ll half-participate in a conversation with his wife, Heather (Embeth Davidtz), or bark orders at his children, Zack (Jack Champion) and Emily (Lilly Aspell). Given how recklessly we see Matt handling other people’s money and emotions, it’s no surprise when someone eventually comes around looking for payback.
And given that this is a Liam Neeson movie in the year 2023 with a title like Retribution, it’s no surprise that they do so by holding him hostage with the threat of explosion. The film opens with Matt begrudgingly agreeing to take the kiddos to school. During the drive, he receives a call and a mysterious voice informs him that there...

In the midst of a weekend with National Cinema Day, in addition to several previews, Sony’s feature take of PlayStation game, Gran Turismo, is bound to take No. 1 at the box office. This despite the fact that tracking has lowered its projections on the film down to $12M from $15M.
Gran Turismo originally was scheduled to open on Aug. 11, but Sony unconventionally decided to pivot to previews for two weeks prior to the pic’s opening this Friday in an effort to drum up word of mouth on the Neill Blomkamp directed movie since the cast wasn’t available due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Per industry sources, not Sony, previews are estimated to be in the $3M-plus range. That cash will be rolled into Gran Turismo‘s first Friday. This would boost the movie’s opening weekend to an estimated $15M in 3,800 theaters. In major markets such as LA,...

Joining Neeson in the action thriller are Matthew Modine, Noma Dumezweni, Jack Champion, Lilly Aspell, and Embeth Davidtz. Pop quiz, hot shot: Liam Neeson has to figure out what to do when he discovers a bomb in his vehicle in the first full trailer for the film Retribution.
Director Nimród Antal’s Lionsgate release hits theaters Aug. 25 and is a remake of the 2015 Spanish-language thriller of the same name. The new version centers on Matt Turner (Neeson), who is driving with his kids when he learns from a mysterious caller that the car contains a bomb that will detonate if anyone exits the vehicle, leading to a high-speed chase throughout the city.
“Honey, something’s happened,” Neeson calmly relays in the trailer. “There’s a man who has put a bomb in the car. Under our seats, there are pressure triggers. We can’t get out. The car will explode.”
Later, the star loses his cool when the caller claims to be in control: “No, you’re not!

It’s been 15 years since Liam Neeson revitalized his career with the surprise hit Taken. And ever since, Neeson has been taking advantage of his new gruff action persona, lending his acting gravitas to action movies where he would dabble in gunplay and occasional fisticuffs. That’s not to say the Irish actor has been slumming entirely. The Academy Award-nominated actor has still been able to fit in films like Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Steve McQueen’s Widows to keep scratching his thespian itch. Now, Neeson is back in the driver’s seat in the trailer for his new action thriller, Retribution.
The official synopsis from Lionsgate reads,
Liam Neeson stars in Retribution, an immersive ticking-clock thriller that straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge. When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the...

It’s been a minute since we heard from Hungarian filmmaker Nimród Antal. After his international debut “Kontrol” proved to be a modest hit, Hollywood came knocking (20007’s “Vacancy” and 2009’s “Armored”), and he was handpicked by Robert Rodriguez to direct the 2010 “Predators” sequel that never really caught fire. Antal’s done work since those movies, obviously, but he’s taking another big shot at global exposure with “Retribution,” a new revenge thriller starring action dad Liam Neeson.

Stopping at an isolated, run-down motel for the night does not bode well in a horror film. Audiences expect — even want — something bad to happen. Vacancy more than satisfies those expectations, seeing as how Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson’s hapless, anguished characters almost instantly find themselves in peril once they book a room at the Pinewood Motel. Dirty sheets and bad plumbing are the least of their problems when they discover their accommodations come with one additional, not to mention creepy, amenity: secret cameras.
Had things gone differently, Vacancy would have starred Sarah Jessica Parker, and it would have been directed by Simon West. As interesting as it would have been to see Parker fight for her life in a straight-up horror film, plans changed and Kate Beckinsale filled the role of Amy Fox. Luke Wilson, however, was David Fox from the very beginning when the film was first...

Liam Neeson thinks there’s a disturbance in the Force thanks in part to the rapid expansion of the Star Wars Universe. On Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, Neeson said he wants to avoid starring in his own spin-off series because the glut of Star Wars projects is diminishing the franchise.
“No, I’m not,” Neeson said about returning to the Star Wars Universe for a spin-off on Disney+. “There’s so many spin-offs of Star Wars. It’s diluting it to me, and it’s taken away the mystery and the magic in a weird way.”
Star Wars fans will be quick to point out that Neeson made a cameo appearance as his character Qui-Gon Jinn in Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, though Neeson says it was just a bit of fun. During the interview, he said it was “nice to do the little bit with Ewan [McGregor]” in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This one-minute clip from Apple TV+’s Servant season four episode two is creepy, but not in a supernatural way. Instead, it’s creepy as in the entire neighborhood appears to have become infested with bed bugs. But is that really what’s going on? Odds are bed bugs are just a cover for something sinister that’s about to happen to the Turners.
Episode two of the fourth and final season is titled “Itch,” of course, and will find Leanne tormenting Dorothy as chaos overtakes Spruce Street. Episode two will premiere on Friday, January 20, 2023.

The most popular moment in season 4 of the Netflix series Stranger Things came when the character Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) played guitar along to the Metallica song “Master of Puppets” while facing off with the forces of evil in the Upside Down. And during a recent interview with Howard Stern, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich explained the decision to let the show use the song, and discussed what it was like to see the renewed interest in “Master of Puppets” thirty-six years after the song was first released.
Speaking with Stern, Ulrich said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “It used to be, with Metallica, we were always the ‘no’ guys. … A few years ago, we reversed it, we did a 180. Exclusive: Lionsgate just landed a solid thriller for its slate. In competition with other distributors, the company has acquired U.S., Canada and India distribution rights to Retribution, an action thriller from Studiocanal and The Picture Company that stars Liam Neeson. The Nimród Antal-directed film is a remake of the Spanish movie El Desconocido, which received eight Goya Award noms when it was released in Spain in 2015.
The remake also stars Noma Dumezweni, Matthew Modine, Lily Aspell, Jack Champion (a star of the upcoming Avatar sequels), Embeth Davidtz and Arian Moayed. The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona & Alex Heineman produced the film along with Jaume Collet-Sera and Juan Sola.
Retribution has a Speed vibe to it. Neeson plays an American businessman living in Berlin who discovers through a car phone call on his way to work that a bomb has been planted in his car by an unknown assailant.

Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for the first three seasons of "Servant."
M. Night Shyamalan sure is keeping busy these days. Last month, the trailer dropped for his highly anticipated horror film "Knock At The Cabin," all while he's been absolutely crushing it with the mystery series "Servant" for Apple TV+. Created by Tony Basgallop with Shyamalan serving as executive producer, showrunner, and the director of multiple episodes, "Servant" is a psychological horror streaming television series about a wealthy Philadelphia couple named Dorothy and Sean Turner who endure the tragic loss of their thirteen-week-old son, Jericho.
In an attempt to heal, the couple introduces a lifelike reborn doll as transitory object therapy. Unfortunately, Dorothy begins believing the doll is her actual child and hires a young nanny named Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free) to move in to help take care of "the baby" full-time. As is the case with any Shyamalan project,...
