Merce Cunningham takes a bow with his dancers and Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth at his 90th birthday celebration, on April 16, 2009. From PatrickMcMullan.com. The passing of Merce Cunningham on Sunday night marked the loss of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. As a dancer, a choreographer, and the founder of Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Cunningham’s contribution to dance, specifically American dance, ranks with George Balanchine’s and Martha Graham’s. In the mid-1950s, Cunningham introduced the world to a new form of movement that neither mimicked nor mocked its competing genres, ballet and modern dance. Since then, and until his 90th birthday in April, he created such enduring works as Crises (1960) and Sounddance (1975), and mentored renowned dancers including Paul Taylor, Karole Armitage, and Lucinda Childs. He famously danced in every one of his company’s performances until turning 70, in 1989, and consistently...

"9 to 5," the musical version of the 1980 hit movie comedy, received a generous stimulus package from the Drama Desk on Monday, netting a record 15 nominations from the organization of New York-based theater critics, reporters and editors for its annual awards.
Other top nominees included "Shrek the Musical" with 12, "Billy Elliot" with 10, "Irving Berlin's White Christmas" with six and the "Hair" revival with eight.
The previous record for the most noms was 14 shared by five shows -- "The Secret Garden" (1991), "Ragtime" (1998), "The Producers" (2001), "Hairspray" (2003) and "The Drowsy Chaperone" (2006).
"9 to 5" opened March 30 on the same night as Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of "Waiting for Godot," which received two nominations. Those are the last two productions of the 2007-08 Broadway season.
Unlike the Tony Awards, the DDs consider Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway equally in all of its categories. The noms were determined by a seven-member committee. The winners will be voted on by...

Two nights on the town (a little town I like to call "Manhattan"), and oh the difference in granularity. Friday night we descended into the funky womb of Symphony Space's Leonard Nimoy Thalia to catch Keigwin Kabaret, featuring members of Larry Keigwin's dance company in cahoots with a a beanpole emcee with a husky come-on voice and a disinclination to wear pants, a lariat twirler with a barnyard secret to tell, a mermaid in a wheelchair afflicted with Marlene Dietrich malaise, and enough pulchitrude to add a few new continent shelves to the topopraphy of the female form. Each time the Keigwin dancers returned to the intimate stage, hypodermic jabs of energy cut a jagged swath through the theater. You ask: How can a pointy needle cut a jagged swath? Excellent question. I wish I knew. And yet I refuse to retract or revise the metaphor, since.it conveys the...
