In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.

Is Richard Osman’s House of Games the perfect teatime quiz show? It’s certainly in contention. Silly, funny and warm, it makes very good company. The armchairs exude a sense of convivial relaxation. There are no flashing-lights podiums or tense burden of cash prizes, making it a wholly gentler experience than, say, The Chase. It keeps the same four contestants all week long, meaning that the kind of rapport other quiz shows try to manufacture in rapid-fire Q&As with the host can naturally develop. The personalities and relationships are almost as important as the rounds and questions, and it’s all done with a sense of humour – from the deliberately naff 1970s gameshow-style fondue sets and carriage clock prizes, to the enjoyable silliness behind almost every round.

It was oddly devastating to learn that ITV’s kid’s channel Citv is to close on 1st September 2023. Many millennials and Gen Xers probably haven’t even seen a Citv show for two decades or more – besides, back in the day it wasn’t even a channel, but just a few after-school hours of programming on the regular ITV channel. So why does its closure leave us feeling like it’s the end of an era?
Because the memories of that era were so, so good, that’s why. We all remember getting home from school, grabbing a glass of squash and a Wagon Wheel and immediately flicking the TV on, and Citv (along with Cbbc – and Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel if you were well posh) kept us company until it was time to eat our spaghetti hoops and turkey twizzlers.

It takes many people to fill Richard Osman’s shoes, and not just because he wears a size 14. Back in April 2021, the TV presenter, producer and novelist announced that he was leaving his co-presenter role on Pointless to focus on his hugely successful Thursday Murder Club book series and other projects. Due to the ‘stars we see in the night sky are actually hundreds of years in the past’ nature of TV broadcast, by that point, Osman was already four months out of the job. His final episode of the regular Pointless (he’ll still appear on the celebrity editions) was filmed in December 2021 and aired in July 2022, with this touching message to Alexander Armstrong.
When Pointless returned for Series 28 in September 2022, it came with a rotating clutch of new guest-hosts sitting behind Osman’s fact-checking desk. First up was Sally Lindsay, and following her were Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne,...

It’s a big year for UK quiz shows shaking up the presenter bench. Last part of the trilogy adapting one of the best anime and manga of all time, “The Final Alchemy” concludes the story as closely to the original as possible, with a 142 minute epic that is probably the best in the trilogy.
While Edward and Ling Yao are fighting Envy inside Gluttony, Hohenheim, father to the Erlic brothers, also becomes a factor in the story, while Roy Mustang realizes that the conspiracy he thought included some of the higher echelons of the army is much bigger than he anticipated. The narrative then focuses on the various arcs of the last episodes of the anime, with Scar still being part of the equation, Ling Yao becoming a whole different entity, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath revealing even more of their secrets, and the gang finding powerful allies in the face of Alex Armstrong’s sister, Mira, and Izumi, the woman who actually taught alchemy to the two brothers.

Richard Osman has feigned outrage over the fact that the laptop in the Pointless studio actually works.
In April, the BBC announced that Osman had quit Pointless after almost 13 years.
The TV personality had presented the show since its very first episode in 2009 with Alexander Armstrong, with the latter now being joined by a rotating cast of co-presenters for the new series.
Coronation Street and Scott & Bailey star Sally Lindsay was the first celebrity to step into Osman’s shoes for last night’s episode (20 September), and she made use of a laptop in the studio to help her present.
Sharing an image of Lindsay using the computer, Osman – who was hardly seen going on the device during his years as host – tweeted: “Wait, the laptop Works Now????”
Lindsay later posted: “Thank you everyone (especially the legend @richardosman) for your comments and support regarding Pointless. It’s such a...

Richard Osman has recalled the timePointless host Alexander Armstrong played a game of the quiz show with Queen Elizabeth II.
The royal, who died last week aged 96, was known to be a fan of the daytime quiz show, in which contestants are tested on obscure knowledge.
Appearing on Lorraine on Thursday (15 September), Osman recalled a time that host Alexander Armstrong was invited to the Sandringham Women’s Institute for a game of Pointless.
“He was invited up to see the Queen. I note I wasn’t invited,” he joked to Lorraine Kelly.
“He went up to Sandringham Wi and he played a game of Pointless. There were two teams, the Queen was captain of one of the teams against a local woman from the village.”
Osman continued: “The Queen’s team won. [Armstrong] said she was very, very forthright in her opinions as to what answers they should give and, at the end,...

Queen Elizabeth II lived a remarkable life – but not everyone knows she made time to watch TV too.
The Royal Family announced that the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday (8 September), aged 96.
In the wake of her death, fans are remembering the Queen’s rather eclectic taste in television.
According to reports, the Queen received selected shows from the BBC, who would occasionally add in unrequested items they thought she may enjoy.
Other reports have suggested that she once asked that a Doctor Who DVD box set be sent to Balmoral, and that she told actor Peter Sallis that she loved Last of the Summer Wine.
She also visited the set of EastEnders in 2001.
It would seem that even royals aren’t above a hate-watch either, as she is said to have once commented on police procedural series The Bill: “I don’t like The Bill but I just can’t help watching it.

Alexander Armstrong has explained his decision to turn down a role as host of Countdown.
The presenter was previously offered the position on the long-running Channel 4 quiz show, but turned it down in favour of Pointless, his lighthearted BBC quiz show.
Colin Murray was recently announced as the new host of Countdown following the departure of Anne Robinson (The Weakest Link), who had been host for just a year.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Armstrong was asked by presenter Adil Ray about his past flirtation with the Countdown hosting gig.
Ray said: “You’re so good at the quiz thing. I was surprised to hear, from the researcher I was chatting to for this, that you turned down Countdown? Why? What were you thinking?”
“I took it very seriously, Countdown – it was a job. I take everything seriously that I’m offered,” replied Armstrong. “I felt Countdown was a...

Earlier this month, it was announced that the BBC had called time on the satirical panel show after 17 years and 21 series “in order to create room for new shows”.
On Friday’s episode of The Last Leg (19 August), while talking about Ó Briain being touted as the possible replacement for Jeremy Paxman onUniversity Challenge (a job that went to former Independent editor Amol Rajan), host Adam Hills asked him: “How do you feel about your name being in the mix?”

America is no longer leading on the world stage in one crucial metric.
We’ve lost game-show-host supremacy.
On “Jeopardy!,” the standard-bearer for American quiz shows, star power has been outsourced to the contestants. And recent long-running champions Amy Schneider and Matt Amodio lent energy that had otherwise been missing. The recent endless cycling through “Jeopardy!” guest hosts having ended in a fiasco and then a compromise has left Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik, dividing the role, adrift. Both are competent (and were among the more adept options offered up in the season-long talent search), but this viewer, at least, felt somewhat wrung out by the show’s constantly shifting tones and the drama of its hopscotching between emcees and the firing of Mike Richards. The flagship trivia show in this country often feels chastened and a bit wan.

An hour-long compilation of favourite preschool TV episodes brings simple pleasures for toddlers and in-jokes for the grownups
As regular viewers of the BBC’s preschoolers channel CBeebies will know, Hey Duggee is an animated series about a friendly dog who runs Squirrel Club, an activity group for assorted youngsters of all species: mouse, crocodile, hippo. Alexander Armstrong narrates in plummy, jolly tones, animator andassistant director Sander Jones does Duggee’s droll “woofs”, while young actors voice the rest of the cast.
This package, assembled for theatrical release, collates several of the show’s best episodes and it’s not hard to see why the series is so treasured by fans of all ages. Much like Peppa Pig, which it resembles a little too closely, the character design, supersaturated colour palette and highly stylised animation have an easily decipherable, eminently replicable simplicity, all the better to appeal to young minds...

Production is under way on Altitude Film Entertainment and Citrus Films’ family movie Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans, based on the popular children’s book series by Terry Deary and illustrated by Martin Brown.
Shooting now on location in the UK and Bulgaria, the film will cast the antics of the Roman Empire in a comedic light. It will follow Atti, a Roman teenager with brains but very little brawn. When one of his clever schemes falls foul of Emperor Nero, he is forced to join the army and is sent to miserable, cold, wet Britain where the natives are revolting – quite literally. Things go from bad to worse when Atti is captured by Orla, a feisty teenage Celt desperate to prove herself as a warrior.
Dominic Brigstocke, director of the TV version of the series, will make his feature directorial debut. Script comes from Jessica Swale together with Giles Pilbrow and Caroline Norris.

How do they choose the 100 people polled on Pointless? What counts as a Mastermind specialist subject? 7 geeky game show questions…
It’s all very well for game shows to sit there and ask all the questions. How would they feel if we turned the tables and started to interrogate them? Then the quizzing shoe would be on the other foot.
(Potential ITV pitch “The Quizzing Shoe”: two teams of professional cobblers answer trivia questions on the history of footwear for a chance to win their choice of shoe worn by a member of the opposing team. Suggested hosts: Imelda Marcos, P.C. Boot from The Shoe People, Elizabeth Shue.)
Here are our best attempts at answering seven questions we’ve long wondered about some of the UK’s finest game and quiz shows…

Cbbc has ordered another pile of Danger Mouse episodes, with Alexander Armstrong and Kevin Eldon set to return...
Cbbc’s Danger Mouse revamp has been renewed for a second series. You’d expect the show’s impressive voice cast – including Alexander Armstrong, Kevin Eldon, Dave Lamb, Stephen Fry and Lena Headey – to assemble once again.
Alexander Armstrong is definitely coming back, and he had this to say about the renewal:
“I have had enormous fun playing Danger Mouse, whose style, bravery and wit I greatly admire. I am almost unbearably excited about what new magnificent missions and terrifying situations the writing team will come up with for Danger Mouse and Penfold in series two!”
Penfold himself, Mr Kevin Eldon, added this:
“It’s a funny old world. You get no series of Danger Mouse for 23 years and then two come along at once. All right, there’s been 18 months between them,...

"No threat is too small, no evil too great for this secret agent mouse and his sidekick! Villains: You've been warned.”
Netflix has released the first trailer for their upcoming animated action series, Danger Mouse. This is a remake of the original cartoon that aired in the UK from 1981 to 1992. I remember watching a few episodes of that show, but I was more into Mighty Mouse since that’s what was airing in the Us when I was growing up. The new Danger Mouse series updates the world’s greatest super spy rodent for the 21st century, and it looks like a lot of fun.
The world’s greatest secret agent, Danger Mouse, returns in dashing, globe-spanning style with a new animated series that features all the classic characters, catchphrases and comedy that made it an 80’s cult favorite. With the world once more teetering on the edge of disaster,...

Brian Blessed and Richard Ayoade join the cast of Danger Mouse for its new Christmas Special, a festive classic in the making...
When we reviewed the pilot for the revived Danger Mouse back in September, it seemed like a promising start to the new series, albeit not one without issues: it was a bit too self-aware and the voices would take some getting used to. Fifteen episodes later, the team are unleashing Danger Mouse’s first-ever Christmas special upon the world, and we’re pleased to report that it’s set to go down in the grand pantheon of TV Christmas specials as a classic.
Running at twice the length of a regular episode, The Snowman Cometh features guest star Richard Ayoade as the titular Snowman, one of Danger Mouse’s least fearsome nemeses, whose initial attack on London is met with derision from rodent superspies and members of the public alike.
