Chrysalis Records has released a new Nick Drake anthology tribute album called The Endless Coloured Ways – The Songs of Nick Drake, which includes contributions from Liz Phair, Feist, Radiohead’s Philip Selway, and more. Stream it below on Spotify and Apple Music.

Fontaines D.C. have released their cover of Nick Drake’s cherished “‘Cello Song.” The recording serves as first single off of a forthcoming tribute project, The Endless Coloured Ways – The Songs of Nick Drake, out on July 7th via Chrysalis Records.
Adopting a different approach than Drake’s original (first released on 1969’s Five Leaves Left), Fontaines switch out the bustling acoustics and the titular cello for a driving backbeat, a soundscape of guitars, and a haunting melody that, all combined, use Drake’s same spark to light a whole new flame. Hearing vocalist Grian Chatten croon the final verse, “So forget this cruel world/ Where I belong/ I’ll just sit and wait/ And sing my song,” it makes one reflect on how Drake would feel if he could see the impact he’s made on so many artists since his tragic death in 1974. The NBCUniversal cable network has cancelled the reality series after one season.
It comes after the broadcaster renewed Blake Shelton and Carson Daly’s Barmageddon for a second season after it became its best series premiere in nearly three years.

No discussion of Baz Luhrmann’s films – and his maximalist, hyper-sensory style – is complete without mentioning their equally more-is-more approach to music. With the help of his longtime music supervisor Anton Monsted (who started out as his assistant on 1996’s “Romeo + Juliet”), the Australian director has become synonymous with era-defying, genre-compounding pop soundtracks that infuse his films’ historical settings with contemporary sensibilities.

Theater actor Max McLean stars in the indie film, which is an adaptation of his U.S. stage production of the same name.
Shot in and around Oxford, the film charts the spiritual journey of the renowned writer prior to the publication of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, and before his marriage to Joy Davidman. The film reveals Lewis as an Oxford Professor in 1950 looking back to the period of his youth from 1908 to 1931 when he slowly and reluctantly changed his views from atheism to Christianity.
Nicholas Ralph (All Creatures Great and Small) plays the younger Lewis and newcomer Eddie Ray Martin plays the childhood Lewis. Tom Glenister plays Lewis’s friend and fellow Oxford professor J.R.R. Tolkien, while there are also supporting parts for David Shields and Owen Barfield.

Disney is the premier company for family friendly fare, and rightly so. Their brand is synonymous with making children happy. At their best, they can also produce content that delights adults in the same manner. Their latest effort, The One and Only Ivan, attempts to pull that feat off, with mixed results. What a missed opportunity we have here. For two thirds of The Burnt Orange Heresy, this art world centered suspense film does a lot of things right. Watching “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” you may find yourself wishing one of two things: that Claes Bang and Elizabeth Debicki had been around to make elegant little mystery capers with Alfred Hitchcock in his prime, or that Hitch were around today to direct this one, a marble-cool art-fraud thriller that begins lithely and sexily before, somewhat mystifyingly, it takes a terminal turn for the dour. German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 is looking to sell its production division Red Arrow Studios – the company that owns Bosch producer Fabrik Entertainment and The Circus producer Left/Right.
Investment bank Morgan Stanley is working with the media group on a “full divestiture” of the business, according to German media trade Dwdl.de. A deck has been sent to potential investors, which have until Friday September 13 to express their interest.
It marks a departure from current trends as most broadcasters and media groups are looking to grow their production and content units to fight falling advertising revenues and the threat of streaming services.
However, it’s believed that ProSiebenSat.1 may be willing to keep two subsidiaries; German production company Redseven Entertainment and multichannel network Studio71.

Bafta-winning Craig Armstrong to score drama.
Rialto Distribution has acquired Australia and New Zealand rights to Genesius Pictures’ upcoming Mrs Lowry & Son, starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave.
The film depicts the relationship between English artist L.S. Lowry and his mother Elizabeth, with whom he lived for the majority of his life. Production wrapped in March 2018 and Bafta-winning composer Craig Armstrong has now signed up to write the score.
International sales were being handled by the late Robbie Little of The Little Film Company, who passed away last week.

In case you didn’t notice last week, a number of categories had their ranks thinned out by the Academy. Well, in that regard, I’m here to help. Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

The producers of A&E’s reality hit “Duck Dynasty” have been placed on leave from their company in a pending audit of the company’s finances, TheWrap has learned. Scott and Deirdre Gurney, the husband-and-wife team whose Gurney Productions was bought by ITV America in 2012, have been placed on a leave of absence while the company sorts through internal financial documents related to production billing, according to a source close to the situation. Now, here’s a great example of counter-programming. As of last Friday, with the return of Marvel’s superstar super-team, the onslaught of the big blockbuster, “check your mind at the door”, movie season officially began. But what about those cultured folks needing an oasis at the multiplex, a quiet escape from the movie mayhem. In a recent interview, composer Christophe Beck said that his score for Elektra is “Still one of my favorite scores, and I think it has a very unique sound that holds up to this day.”
He also said, “I still hope to one day come back and do another Marvel movie, which may or may not happen, but I'm definitely being optimistic about it.”
Of course, Elektra was based on a Marvel character, but not a Marvel Studios film. However, whether or not they're made by Marvel Studios, superhero films based on Marvel characters (and DC characters, for that matter) have the potential to be both character-driven and examples of grand spectacle, which many of them pull off successfully.
Beck said “That movie did pretty poorly at the box office, even though I enjoyed the film very much.” It sounds like he's referring to enjoying the film itself, as well...

Purr-fect is the best way to describe Craig Armstrong's unique mountain-climbing partner. He adopted the stunning black feline named Millie from an animal shelter in Park City, Utah, and she is all he ever wanted in a sidekick. "I go on a lot of weekend climbing adventures. Ivan Sen.s Mystery Road and Kim Mordaunt.s The Rocket shared the best film honours at the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards presented last night.
The Great Gatsby collected four awards followed by The Rocket with 3 and Mystery Road and The Turning with 2 awards each.
Naomi Watts was named best actress for her role in the little-seen Adoration and Aaron Pedersen was best actor for Mystery Road. Sen was best director.

Just a quick scan down the list below reveals an extraordinary breadth of genres and subject matters, from imposing, expensive science fiction films to quiet, intimate stories about men at sea on boats or outlaws breaking out of prison to be with their wives. Disparate though the films are, they're all linked by at least one common motif: their music is utterly brilliant.
So with 2014 already well underway, and an entire new wave of films with great music in them beckoning, join us as we look back to the movies of last year, their finest soundtracks, and the must-listen pieces of music you can dig out on each one.

Was 2013 a weak year for film scores? I feel like it was. At least in terms of the scores that Oscar's music branch would pay attention to. I mean, four of my favourite scores of the year aren't even eligible! They would be Great Expectations (Richard Hartley), A Touch of Sin (Giong Lim), Lore (Max Richter - my no. 1 from 2012, but not released in Us until this year), and Only God Forgives (Cliff Martinez). Also not eligible for whatever reasons are Lone Survivor (Stephen Jablonsky), Frozen, Inside Llewyn Davis (T-Bone Burnett), and Nebraska (Mark Orton) - sorry Anne Marie!
I'm sure there is plenty of excellent music featured amongst this year's 141 (the documentary win this year's bragging rights, then) eligible scores, but Oscar will only look at about 10 or 12. Sorry Joseph Bishara - your abrasive strings on Insidious: Chapter 2 and The Conjuring just won't factor despite their effectiveness. Sorry...

One hundred fourteen scores from eligible feature-length motion pictures released in 2013 will be vying for nominations in the Original Score category for the 86th Oscars®, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.
A Reminder List of works submitted in the Original Score category will be made available with a nominations ballot to all members of the Music Branch, who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.
Nomination voting in all Oscar categories begins Friday, December 27 and ends Wednesday, January 8.
The eligible scores along with their composers are listed below, in alphabetical order by film title:
