Books are being pulled from the library shelves of an Iowa school district following new legislation from Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, which purports to protect children from obscene material, The Gazette reports.
The new legislation, Senate File 496, prohibits “instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation in school districts, charter schools and innovation zone schools in kindergarten through grade six.” It requires that every book available to students be “age appropriate” and free of any “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act.”

Wizards of Waverly Place star, Selena Gomez will star in a film adaptation of the young adult novel, titled 13 Reasons Why.
The whole thing is based on a book with the same title written by Jay Asher, and Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures purchased the rights to story especially for Selena! Can you believe that?
The story centers on a timid California teenager who returns home from school to find a box with seven cassette tapes recorded by his crush, Hannah Baker, who recently committed suicide.
The tapes were given to one student before her death, with instructions to pass them along to 13 students, much like a chain letter. The cassettes explain how each of the 13 people played a part in her suicide.
A director hasn’t been attached at this time and it isn’t clear when production will start. Eric Newman and Marc Abraham will produce through...

If you're not under the age of 15 or don't know anyone who is, you probably are totally unaware that Selena Gomez is, like, really famous-- like dating Justin Bieber famous. (If you don't know who Justin Bieber is, just move on to the next article-- I won't judge you). Gomez rose to fame the same way Miley Cyrus did before her, starring on a Disney Channel show-- The Wizards of Waverly Place-- and releasing albums on top of it. Her movie career hasn't been quite as robust, with movies like Ramona & Beezus not exactly making her a star, but now the 18-year-old is hoping a move toward darker material might do the trick. According to Deadline she'll star for Universal in 13 Reasons Why, an adaptation of Jay Asher's novel about a high school girl who kills herself and leaves a series of cassette tapes that explains to 13 different...

One tough transition to make is from kid actor to grown-up actor, it's even tougher to make that leap if you're Disneyfied. The studios and the public don't take you as seriously...which is one of the likely reasons why Selena Gomez signed up to star and her mother Mandy Teefey to produce TH1RTEEN R3ASONS Why for Universal. It's based on the Jay Asher teen novel that's pretty popular among middle and high school students. It's about a shy new kid who comes home from school to find a box of cassette tapes on his front door step. Their from Hannah Baker (Gomez), a classmate who committed suicide. Her request is for each person to listen to the tapes instructing them to pass on to another specific person. Each tape explains why she killed herself and the role the person listening had in her death. Judging from the...

In trying to find a starring vehicle for up and coming young Disney spawn Selena Gomez, Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have gotten the rights to adapt the Jay Asher novel “Thirteen Reasons Why”. The book tells the story of a high school outsider who has sent out audio messages to let 13 people know what part they played in her suicide. Oh yeah, that’s right: she’s dead. The whole idea of this being Gomez’s first big starring vehicle seems weird to me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the role of a suicidal high school dork is a terrible fit for a girl as conventionally attractive as Selena Gomez. But nobody can expect Hollywood to be that self-aware at this point, so it’s one that’s easy to overlook. But secondly, there is the fact that the whole movie is going to be about suicide. Doesn’t that seem a little grim for...

Rosamund Pike has joined the cast of the Warner Bros. sequel Wrath of the Titans, portraying Andromeda. Alexa Davalos portrayed Andromeda in last year’s Clash of the Titans remake, though she is unavailable to return for the sequel. Pike was one of the actresses in the running for a lead role in Superman. Now that she is committed to Wrath of the Titans, it is likely she will be available for Snyder’s upcoming reboot. Now Alice Eve and Diane Kruger are the other actresses up for the Superman role, which is rumored to be Ursa, a baddy Kryptonian who works for Zod. Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) will direct Wrath of the Titans from a script by David Johnson. It isn’t clear when production will start on Wrath of the Titans, although Warner Bros. has set a March 30, 2012 release date.
