Charles Koppelman, whose publishing and talent development vision made him one of the recording industry’s top executives, has died at 82.
No cause was given by his son, Brian, showrunner of Billions, and daughter Jenny Koppelman Hutt. “He spent his last days surrounded by those he loved the most,” his son wrote on social media.
Koppelman saw the potential of music publishing early in his career.
He began his career as a singer and songwriter, part of the legendary Aldon Music staff under CEO Don Kirshner that included Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
He moved on to CBS Records in the 1970s, rising to VP/Gm of worldwide publishing. Martin Bandier is leaving his post as Sony/Atv Music Publishing’s chairman/CEO and the end of March 2019.
Bandier’s long-rumored move was confirmed by an internal letter sent to staffers. Sony/Atv is the world’s largest music publisher, gaining the title when it reached an agreement in May to acquire the 60% stake in Emi Music Publishing held by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund. The deal is important in an age where streaming music dominates the market.
The veteran Bandier is one of the giants of music publishing, dating back to the vinyl records days. At 77, his note to staffers indicated there is a “next” planned, but he did not provide details on what that may entail.
While no official announcements have been made on a successor, there are indications he will be replaced by Jon Platt, who he worked with at Emi Music Publishing. Platt is...

Caroline and artist manager Justin Goldman announced today the formation of his JustGold record label, and that the companies have entered into a worldwide distribution partnership for JustGold releases. The new company also announced its first signing, London-based singer Millie Go Lightly, who debuted in 2017 with two appearances on Young Thug’s album “Beautiful Thugger Girls.” Go Lightly’s debut single for JustGold is scheduled to arrive next month, with an album to come in October.

Vivendi’s plan to sell up to half of its crown jewel, Universal Music Group, was welcomed by the Paris stock market and pushed the French company’s shares up by 3.7% on Tuesday. But it also instantly raised questions as to what lies behind the move, one of the boldest so far by new Vivendi chairman Yannick Bolloré.
“This is the work of a shark,” said one music industry insider, who credits Bolloré with taking advantage of opportunities in a seller’s market. Another views the French executive as a “contrarian investor” willing to take risks and wait out a down period if there’s value on the other side, as happened when Vivendi bought Emi in 2012. To that end, it makes sense for Vivendi to test the marketplace and see what it could get for Umg – the world’s biggest music company, boasting eight of the top 10 albums of...

Sony Music’s Q1 earnings point to a performance in line with industry trends when it comes to streaming (revenues up 30%) and physical product sales (down 30%). Overall, Sony’s music division enjoyed an 8% or JPY12.9 billion improvement in revenue in the quarter ending June 30, reflecting stronger visual media and platform sales, including the successful mobile game app “Fate/Grand Order”.
Operating income for the Music division was up JPY32.1 billion from JPY25 billion in Q1 of 2017. The biggest decline came from physical sales, which dropped from JPY33 million to JPY22 million year-on-year. Download sales saw a slight dip, too, from JPY12.9 million to JPY10.6 million, but digital’s performance overall was offset by a rise in streaming, from JPY38.4 million to JPY51.6 million.
Also detailed in the earnings report is Sony Corp.’s completed acquisition of Emi Music Publishing from a consortium led by private equity firm Mubadala. Sony’s...

YouTube today made a positive move with the creator community by dramatically expanding music credits on the platform. According to an announcement, “Music in this video” credits the artist, songwriter, label and publishers behind than half a billion music videos. The feature will provide credits and music discovery information on both music videos as well as user-generated content that features recorded music. The move follows a similar recent one by Spotify, although theirs does not include publisher information.
More information and visuals can be found in this blog post.
The move has received several high-profile cosigns. Elton John said, “Songwriters are the heart and the soul of songs, so it’s wonderful seeing them get the credit they deserve. There is so much more we can do to establish a better situation for music creators and this is great step forward.”

The song was king at last night’s 66th annual Bmi Pop Awards held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills honoring Mark Ronson. The celebrated five-time Grammy winning artist/producer/songwriter is the first to receive the Bmi Champion Award at the ceremony in recognition not only of his creative track record, but also for his philanthropy, including his patronage of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which works to provide a musical alternative to drugs for at-risk youth.
“This is like my bar mitzvah, except there are fewer family members,” joked Ronson on the red carpet. “But it might be equally embarrassing. I was surprised when my manager Brandon [Creed] told me I’d be getting this award. It doesn’t seem like I’ve achieved that much. But I’m happy to accept it it. In a room full of songwriters, it’s all your peers, which is different from most awards.

Beatles fans who got their hopes up about a proposed miniseries chronicling the band's rise to fame are now singing the blues: The project has hit some major development snags, and may be dead in the water.
Like we predicted last week, the success of NBC's in-the-works series hinges on the network's acquisition of rights to the band's catalogue, and it seems that the current owner of those rights is already in the midst of developing its own competing project about the Fab Four. Billboard reports that Sony/Atv Music Publishing, which has the rights to all but six Lennon-McCartney compositions, has been planning a series with Sony Pictures TV -- possibly helmed by Baz Luhrmann, on a pay cable outlet like HBO -- with the same concept as NBC's show.

The clearance still leaves Sony waiting for the Federal Trade Commission, which is expected to take a few months before deciding whether to approve the $2.2B deal. But it’s still a big step forward for Sony’s ambition to make its Sony/Atv subsidiary — a joint venture with Michael Jackson’s estate — the No. 1 owner of music publishing rights. Emi’s catalog includes standards such as New York New York, You’ve Got A Friend, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Over The Rainbow, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Singin’ In the Rain, and The James Bond Theme. The EU said that it would approve the acquisition once Sony divests four catalogs – Virgin UK, Virgin Europe, Virgin Us, and Famous Music UK – and works by 12 contemporary songwriters including Gary Barlow, Ozzy Osbourne, Robbie Williams, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz, Placebo and The Kooks. Los Angeles — Emi Group Ltd., the iconic British music company that is home to The Beatles, Coldplay and Katy Perry, is being split and sold for $4.1 billion.
The deals will open Emi's buyers, Universal Music and Sony/Atv, to regulatory scrutiny as they increase their dominance of the music industry.
Universal Music Group said Friday that it will pay 1.2 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) for the recording division, joining Universal artists including Lady Gaga and Eminem with Emi superstars such as David Guetta and Lady Antebellum.
A consortium led by Sony/Atv announced a separate deal Friday to pay $2.2 billion for Emi's publishing division. That business is in charge of songwriting copyrights for such artists as Rihanna and Norah Jones.
Sony/Atv, a joint venture between Sony Corp. and the Michael Jackson estate, said it is a 38 percent partner in the consortium. Other parties include Mubadala Development Co., Jynwel Capital Ltd., the Blackstone Group and David Geffen.

HollywoodNews.com: Stop the presses: None other than Prince, dressed like Little Lord Fauntleroy, introduced Barbra Streisand last night at her MusiCares Person of the Year dinner at the La Convention Center. He’d been sitting quietly to the side most of the evening, although at one point he did mildly greet Elvis Costello and his wife Diana Krall, in a sea of 2500 music industry types and stars. This means Prince and Costello sat through a three hour plus evening of performances you might noe associate with their ilk- from the sublime (Leona Lewis) to the sensational (Stevie Wonder).
But then again, so did real legends like Sidney Poitier, Quincy Jones, Sam Moore, and Judy Collins, and a legend who stole the entire show–Tony Bennett, 83, and the master.
At Streisand’s table, her inner circle– husband James Brolin, son Jason Gould, songwriter lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman.

LONDON -- Music major EMI Group announced a long-term succession plan Thursday that will see current chief financial officer Roger Faxon take over from longtime EMI Music Publishing chairman and CEO Martin Bandier, with former British Sky Broadcasting chief financial officer Martin Stewart taking Faxon's job. The publishing unit, home to such artists as Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Jay-Z, accounted for about one-fifth of EMI's revenue and one-quarter of operating profits for the firm's last full fiscal year, which ended in March. The executive revamp will take place over a three-year period, EMI said in a statement, with Faxon relocating to New York as president and chief operating officer of the music publishing division Feb. 1. He will report to Bandier.
