After wowing a home crowd at the opening night of the San Sebastián Film Festival on Friday, looking dazzling at 48, Spain’s best-known actress, Penélope Cruz, spoke to a packed auditorium at the city’s Tabakalera culture center on Saturday when she was honored with Spain’s National Cinematography Prize.
“It is truly an honor for me to receive this National Cinematography Prize,” said Cruz speaking in Spanish.
“Cinema is and has been my passion since I was a child. Since I dreamed in the living room of my parents’ house of worlds to explore beyond our neighbourhood. The streets of my neighborhood sometimes became sets for incredible stories,” she went on. “My childhood was fantasizing about acting, living life so intensely to be able to encompass many lives through dozens of characters.”

Madrid -- Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz says she is deeply concerned about the financial crisis engulfing Spain and how it might affect the future of the film industry in her native country.
The Hollywood star said she would like to encourage film-makers to choose Spain as a location and perhaps use her status to promote co-productions there.
In a statement released Sunday through her agent Katrina Bayonas, Cruz said she also wanted "to rectify" what she called a misinterpretation of her words.
Cruz said an unnamed publication had quoted her as saying, "I will produce a couple of films a year in Spain to provide work for hundreds of people."
Cruz said the published words had "an arrogant tone" that had "nothing to do" with what she had wanted to say.

Exclusive: As expected, Penelope Cruz has joined the stellar cast of the Ridley Scott-directed The Counselor, and I’m told that she is planning to team up again this summer with director Pedro Almodovar in Los Amantes Pasajeros, the comedy he will shoot this summer in Madrid. The title’s translation is The Brief Lovers, and reports say it’s about an affair on an airplane. It is what the actress considers a special collaboration between herself and Almodovar, whose films together include Broken Embraces, Volver, All About My Mother and Live Flesh. Cruz joins Paz Vega, Lola Dueñas, Javier Cámara, Cecelia Roth, Carlos Areces, Raúl Arévalo and José Maria Yazpik. In The Counselor, Cruz will star with Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz in a drama that has been called No Country For Old Men on steroids. Cruz is repped by CAA, Untitled and Spain-based Katrina Bayonas.

Penélope Cruz became an actor because of Pedro Almodóvar—twice. The first time was in 1990, when Cruz was a young girl growing up in Alcobendas, just outside of Madrid, and happened upon the director's "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!," a wacky love story about a former porn star and her kidnapper. She was already a fan of Almodóvar's offbeat sensibilities, but this one had a profound effect on her. "That was the day I decided to look for an agent," Cruz reveals. Her Reign in SpainCruz was only 14 when she attended a cattle call held by agent Katrina Bayonas and found herself armed with sides from "Casablanca," along with 300 other people. Bayonas wouldn't even see her. "She sent me away. She said, 'You are too young. Come back next year,' " Cruz recalls. "I came back three days later, and she said it again. I said, 'I am not too young.

Sexy actresses Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek are poised to team up in a new movie - as a pair of bank robbers. Spanish-born Cruz and Mexico native Hayek have been offered roles in French producer Luc Besson's upcoming comedy Western, which is set in Mexico. Katrina Bayonas, whose Kuranda International Management represents Cruz, says, "Penelope and Salma have been close friends for several years. They've always wanted to work together, and they are delighted that Luc has come up with a production that could well give them that opportunity." The project is currently untitled and a director has yet to be recruited.
