Director: Josh C. Waller. Writers: Robert Beaucage, Kenny Gage and Josh C. Waller. Cast: Zoë Bell, Rachel Nichols, Tracie Thoms and Bruce Thomas. The female prison movies of the '60s and '70s focused on sexploitation. In these films, semi-naked shower scenes and brawls were plentiful. But, the filmmakers of Raze have chosen to alter this genre from the sexy to the blood-filled. In Raze, several characters partake in an all women fighting tournament, which lasts until there is only one survivor. Director Josh C. Waller and the writing team of Robert Beaucage and Kenny Gage have created a thrilling action focused tale, here. Dramatic elements and characterizations are relegated to a few scenes of dialogue and flashbacks. Instead of focusing exclusively on the characters and story, Raze deals with one woman's struggle out of bloodsport and her battle with psychopathic tournament directors. Raze's violent visual spectacle is...

Said reviewer Gabe Toro from The Playlist in his review out of Tribeca: The women-in-prison genre gets a contemporary reworking in the grisly slugfest... Bechdel Test enthusiasts especially should take note of how insignificant men are in these womens’ lives. But perhaps it’s how we find titillation in the modern world – the cast takes turns getting brutalized by each other while under the rule of sadistic prison.

As far back as Enter the Dragon – in other words, for as long as American movie studios have been making martial-arts films – the concept of the tournament has been an important one. It has become even more important in the last decade, as tournament-style fighting games (which were themselves inspired by Enter the Dragon) gained popularity and in some cases inspired movie adaptations of their own. The new film Raze, which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, has the same structure as many of those films and games, but it can’t quite decide if it is their kindred spirit or not.
The concept is simple: fifty women are kidnapped from their normal lives and held in some unknown location, forced every day to fight each other to the death until only one remains. If they refuse to fight,...

Raze is a subversion of the Wip (women in prison) flicthat is one of this years most vicious and ass kicking releases. Sure this has what one would expect in a Wip film beautiful women being held captive by evil wardens and guards but it eliminates some of the more out right exploitative elements of the subgenre like nudity lesbians and sex. But it does feature the violence and it does so at full force. Make no bones about it this actionhorror movie is a force to be reckoned with.Under lesser hands Raze would simply have been a mindless exercise in ultraviolence but director Robert Beaucage appears to be the man to do this movie right.

In all honesty, I've never heard of this one, but it's good to see Bell working with Thoms again after the Grindhouse's Death Proof segment bac in 2007. I recall speaking to both of them at the Atlanta Motor Speedway about that one, time flies. Moving on... Waller helms the film, and also wrote the story alongside Kenny Gage and Robert Beaucage, who in turn wrote the script. I'm not sure if it is good or bad that mainstream film festivals segregate horror films to special "Midnight" sections. On the one hand, these special sections are rarely in competition, but on the other hand, it gets them in front of an audience that may not otherwise be exposed to it.
But I digress. The Tribeca Film Festival announced today its Midnight Movies selections, marking a rebranding of the film block from Cinemania. Check out the lineup below:

Last Friday, June 22nd, this writer hit the set of Josh C. Waller’s then-shooting action/horror feature Raze and while there chatted with the flick’s writer and co-producer Robert Beaucage as well as two of the film’s stars, Zoe Bell and Tracie Thoms.
Our second visit to Raze (we spent some time on set last year when it was envisioned as a web series and was shooting in South L.A.; watch our interview with Zoe Bell, Rachel Nichols and Josh C. Waller here) took place at Illusion Industries in Burbank, California. This time we found the project has grown into a feature length film, following the pre-sales it garnered at Cannes, and the addition of Quincy Studios, which has paired with Cosmic Toast Studios on the production.

This is no ordinary catfight. Long gone has the scratching and hair-pulling and inevitable mud-wrestle (sorry off tangent) as the Josh C. Waller helmed girl on girl kick-ass flick 'Raze' reveals a new still. The project which stars Rachel Nichols -below ('P2', 'Conan the Barbarian') and Zoe Bell ('Death Proof') has been described as 'Fight Club' meets 'Hostel' which seems like a good enough merging of ideas to me. Toss in a couple of hot chicks fighting to the death and by God you've got a movie! Bell will also serve as co-producer along with Robert Beaucage who has already promised hordes of spin-off potential for the project which may include 'web content, graphic novels and sequels'. Feast upon these gamely chicks much like your Thanksgiving turkeys below in the new still and teaser trailer. ...

Another new image has appeared online for the new flick Raze, which we've been giving lots of love to around here. How could we not?!? Zoe Bell and Rachel Nichols fighting to the death? Magnifique! *kisses fingers*
Bell (Kill Bill, Game of Death, Grindhouse, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) and Nichols (Star Trek, P2, The Amityville Horror) co-star in Josh C. Waller's Raze.
Whereas originally it looked like Raze would be a web series, producer Robert Beaucage tells us, "With all the buzz about Raze, and interested distributors contacting us from all over the world, Raze is now being made as a feature film for theatrical release. Ancillaries, such as web content, graphic novels, sequels, etc., will also be forthcoming, but for now we're concentrating on the full-length feature."

Certain Thursday mornings deviate from the norm, and such was the case last week when we hit the set of action/horror flick Raze to interview blood-spattered and dirt-smudged stars Zoe Bell and Rachel Nichols and director Josh C. Waller following a morning of scripted mayhem. Click through to watch an extensive video clip with the trio and for more info from the director of the film currently shooting in Los Angeles.
Scripted by executive producer Louis Iacoviello and producer Kenny Gage (with additional producer credits going to Robert Beaucage, Andrew Pagana, Bill Ceresia, Zoë Bell and director Waller), the feature was in its sixth day of shooting when we caught up with the director and his cast, who, while taking a break from filming a particularly brutal hand-to-hand combat scene (Bell and Nichols were truly going for it), gave us the lowdown on the flick.

Writer/Director: Robert Beaucage
Cast: Sarah Livingston Evans, Jared Edwards, Anna-Marie Wayne, Nancy P. Corbo, Edward Gusts
Chaos Productions
"Spike" starts, as horror films often do, with a car crash along a rural road at night. But this particular car crash is no accident. Two couples traveling to an unnamed destination are halted by what looks like a steam punk accessory. No one is seriously injured in the accident, but after the lone dude goes to check out the tire damage, an unseen assailant attacks him. The gothic spikes he found in the tire are now sticking out of his throat and he's bleeding out fast. The three remaining girls go into panic mode and try to figure out how to save their friend and just what the hell is going on.
The situation escalates quickly. Naturally, there is no cell phone reception and the Evil Dead cam is stalking them.
