Essayist, novelist, playwright, poet, and art critic. He attended art school, taught drawing in university, painted, and exhibited his work in British galleries. He was invited to give a series of talks on art for the BBC World Service. He showed the scripts for some of his broadcasts to the literary editor of the New Statesman, and began a 10-year stint as a controversial and influential art critic.
