Exclusive: Production, finance, and sales company Panorama Motion Pictures will make its Cannes market debut with a slate of projects from Catalyst Studios and other independent producers.
First up the company is producing ambitious project The Sea Hawk, an IP based on Raphael Sabatini’s book, which was most famously adapted into a hit feature by legendary producer Howard Koch and starring Errol Flynn for Warner Bros. in 1940.
The story follows an English gentleman through the changing tides of fortune and fate, who becomes a galley-slave and ultimately the most famous barbary pirate in the Mediterranean Sea. It will be produced by Panorama CEO Mark Pennell and Armyan Bernstein (Air Force One) of Beacon Pictures. Bernstein was most recently an EP on the Kevin Costner western Horizon, which is premiering in Cannes.
Producers are currently shopping for a director with casting targeted before the end of the year.

Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.
“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.
So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.
“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.
As far as I’ve been able to ascertain, and heck I’ve been looking, there’s been no deal...

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (“The Explorers Guild”) and produces through his Territory Pictures.

Francis Ford Coppola has been thinking about utopia his whole career. His upcoming, self-financed epic Megalopolis is about just that. But his first experiment with utopia climaxed in 1980 with the creation of Zoetrope Studios, which he imagined would be its own top-to-bottom, all-encompassing, soul-enriching creative ecosystem free of Hollywood dysfunction. Its initial project was to be the hugely ambitious musical romantic drama One From the Heart, starring Teri Garr, Frederic Forrest and Raul Julia. The 1981 film may have bombed at the box office, but the story of its creation is far brighter, revealing how Coppola’s cast and crew came to believe in his grand vision, and helped him overcome financial disaster. As a new director’s cut of the film comes to New York’s IFC Center on Jan. 19 and L.A.’s Cinemathèque on Jan. 26, the following excerpt from Sam Wasson’s new book The Path to Paradise:...

At The Gates is an entertaining and timely thriller that blends the hot button topic of illegal immigration and undocumented workers into a universal story of fear, paranoia, and the perilous state of our own humanity. That it succeeds to the degree it does is the fact that first time feature writer/director Augustus Meleo Bernstein keeps us guessing as to the intentions and the ultimate fate of its tight circle of main characters. Essentially this is a chamber piece all set in one attractive Los Angeles area suburb’s home and the class drama taking place inside that seems ripped from headlines of individual tragic stories of illegal immigrants who have to worry at any given moment when Ice is going to show up at their doorstep, or in the case of At The Gates, at the doorstep of their employers.

Augustus Meleo Bernstein’s new movie At the Gates is getting a November 3 theatrical release date in New York and Los Angeles from Picturehouse.
The Beacon Pictures and Five Towers production stars Miranda Otto, Noah Wyle, Ezekiel Pacheco, Vanessa Benavente and Sadie Anne Stanley. Bernstein wrote and directed in his feature debut.
In the movie, Ana (Benavente), a housekeeper from El Salvador, brings her teenage son Nico (Pacheco) to help her clean an affluent family’s Los Angeles home. But after being told by her employers Marianne (Otto) and Peter Barris (Wyle) that immigration officers are searching for her, she accepts the invitation to shelter in their house until the crisis blows over. As days go by and the interactions between the two families become increasingly tense, Nico begins to question their hosts’ true intentions.

Will the Hollywood studio become extinct?
One hundred years ago, Louis B. Mayer unfurled his grand idea to mobilize “all the stars in heaven” for his filmmaking adventure. His dream factory, once prolific, now seems adrift amid the economic debris of streamerville and linear TV.
The studio system still has its advocates, one of whom, Francis Coppola, attempted to re-invent the studio on three occasions. He’s still trying.
His intriguing, if bizarre adventure, is told in a gripping new book by Sam Wasson titled Path to Paradise, vividly chronicling how the director leveraged his two great movies into an assembly line of cinema.
Well, almost. Coppola’s effort to orchestrate the genius of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now into an enduring filmmaking enterprise was defeated by two realities: The eccentricity of his management style and the frailty of his infrastructure.
Zoetrope was to be owned and run by creatives...

Evidence surfaced bringing the entire story into question. This documentary series will tell shocking true story of a town caught in the grips of the Satanic Panic, with new witnesses and evidence that shed light on murders that were thought to have been solved. Fall River is produced by Blumhouse Television and Pyramid Productions. James Buddy Day serves as executive producer and director.

Epix has put into development a trio of scripted series: one that takes place in King Arthur’s time, another from the Elizabethan era and the third in 1984.
“The Winter King,” a drama series adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s trilogy of Arthurian novels “The Warlord Chronicles,” hails from Bad Wolf.
“Gibson Station,” from producer/writer/director Edward Burns, is a dramedy set in 1984 that revolves around three 20-something best friends setting out to pursue their dreams and seek out their place in Ronald Reagan’s America.
“A Column of Fire” is based on the novel by international best-selling author Ken Follett. The Elizabethan-era drama follows the romance between Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald and is written by Lizzie Mickery and produced by Snowed-In Productions and Sony Pictures Television. "Whether you’re new to the world of 'Castle' or a long time fan, there’s something for everyone...And it’s the kind of book that reaffirms Marvel’s commitment to creating new fans of comic books."
The "Castle" TV series stars Nathan Fillion as 'Richard Castle', Canadian Stana Katic as 'NYPD Detective Kate Beckett', Susan Sullivan as 'Martha Rodgers', Molly Quinn as 'Alexis Castle', Ruben Santiago-Hudson as 'NYPD Captain Roy Montgomery',...

NBC and Fox have both unleashed their Fall 2011-2012 TV schedule, now ABC has released theirs. I’m excited to see Castle, Modern Family, and The Middle back in the mix. Most of the new shows they have line-up don’t really interest me, but there are a few that have caught my eye. PanAm is another 1960’s based TV show that will go against AMC’s Mad Men and NBC’s The Playboy Club. There’s a show called Revenge that sounds really interesting, but the new series I’m most excited about is is the fantasy series Once Upon A Time, a show where fairy tales collide with the modern day.
Here is ABC’s full schedule along with a description of all of their shows. Go through them below and let us know what TV series you’re most excited about seeing.

We might not get to see Nathan Fillion suit up as Green Lantern, Hawkeye, or any of the other comic book characters we keep suggesting him for, but it looks like he'll get a different sort of crossover with the comics world in the near future.
Announced via press release today, Marvel Entertainment and ABC Studios are partnering to publish a graphic novel based on "Castle," the hit television series in which Fillion plays celebrated mystery author Richard Castle. The graphic novel will be titled "Castle: Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm," and feature the protagonist of Richard Castle's novels, Derrick Storm.
And while that might be an appealing prospect to "Castle" fans (and Nathan Fillion fans), comic fans should note the pedigree of the project's creative team, too. Veteran writer Brian Michael Bendis will co-script the book with Kelly Sue DeConnick ("Captain America And The Secret Avengers"), while...
